MN is an acquired taste. You either have to accept its silly light logic, cheap exposed circuit board, and bedspring shocks, or else be prepared to rip it all out and replace it. If you accept it, you have to stay within its limitations. The exposed circuit board looks to be the same as that in the RTR MN-86. That board will NOT accept a 3S battery (I speak from experience!). And I suspect that you burned one of your chips out running it against some of those rocks even with a 2S battery. I agree with you about RGT, except that those particular models, with the 390 motor, all have plastic transmission gears, which is the weak link there.
It looks to me the failure is the battery, receiver/esc combo, and weight distribution. I have those tires on a couple of trucks and they work pretty good for me. The body is a little off, but it looks good enough. Cramped conditions for a 1/12 driver is par for course with 1/10 hard bodies, getting him in without amputating is a plus. The short wheelbase is probably better suited for an fj40. I think with better electronics and battery and a slightly higher price point would have been a better idea.
Can't believe they supply that paltry Li-ion battery with it. And an open board is ok on a £50 truck but not on one costing this much. On the plus side plenty of scope for improvement! 👍👍
Thanks for another great review. I was shocked to see an exposed circuit board. I thought those disappeared. You have reviewed so many reasonably priced crawlers I thought this one might be even better for the price. I don't think there was a lot of testing before it was released. I know the body is not perfect, but may be it will fit on another car. Your review is very valuable to anyone who was considering it.
Well for a RTR injora scaler not bad. All injora stuff, d90 body and 275 chassis buy them separately and you’ll spend more than that. Put a decent set of tires and weight in those beadlocks plus understand thats not a crawler but trail scaler and you’ll be fine.
It’s just generally crap overall. It says ‘Rock Crawler’ on the box.. but even a trail truck should be able to do some mild crawling… and not break after less than a battery pack 😅
Say what you want but I love the fact that it holds a figure without modding, that's an extremely rare thing and at least for me absolutely everything.
The body looks to be the same as the Injora Defender body, I've got a 313mm "110" and its decent quality if not a bit wonky on the scale. The chassis/axles look like they could be Injora too with crap springs and electronics stuck on it. If it had decent shocks and electronics it should be half decent for the money...
Having built two trucks with parts from Injora and other brands form aliexpress, I can confirm that the whole chassis assembly is a cheap kit that is known for having stiff shocks, and tires wearing pretty fast if you crawl a lot on rocks. The body isn't bad in quality because I own a XJ Cherokee from them and it's pretty nice, the problem is that on this defender they messed up the proportions real bad, the windshield is too small, there should be less real estate under the "glass". In addition to that, the doors are way too small and make the side look weird. But the thing I dislike the most is the fact that they rushed in trying to recycle their standard 2-in-1 esc and reciever platform making one powerful enough to fit the 540 motor. They could have rebranded alrady existing gear kinda like other brands do. Overall this shows poor design choices, most of the parts can be bought right now separately from the internet, and the proprietary ones aren't in line with the quality of the MN99/99s for example. They were probably going to make one from the ground up, and that's probably what they're doing right now, but in the meantime, in order to attract people to the brand again they decided to release this hoping to get attention, they succeeded but not in a positive matter.

Looks like it got caught between toy grade and hobby grade. The speed controller is embarrassing for something at that price point and it looked like they built it with spare part lying around. I did think the body was going in the right direction but even that is a little questionable.
out from the box... i'm waterproof it and give it heatsink, also try it with 3s liion... still working until today... yeah mn999 had bad esc and slow servo ....
I think a cheap esc and receiver setup in it wouldn't be to bad but I've noticed that with alot of the mn brand they either need to have wpl electronics in them when sold or you upgrade yourself
Throw an isdt esc70 and a Dumbo rc receiver in, at it would probably be a lot better, and not cost a lot of money. Still probably cheaper than buying the chassis and body from injora.
Took the words right out of my mouth Phil , was thinking the whole time "I'd rather have an ftx outback and some change" . What a wet fart of a truck (couldn't bring myself to call it a crawler 😂😂)
Paul (?) you can't drive this thing properly man! The rear door opening constantly is a feature! My sons MN 99s did the same exact thing twice! Even after replacing with a new stock motor and board, it quit again. All he was trying to do both times was get over a rock like you were. Got a bad taste in my mouth for MN Now.
I've got an MN86 and it appears to be more capable than that. I'd say that the MN86 is actually about 1:16 scale based on what figures fit, so the MN999 is probably closer to 1:12 than 1:10. It's a shame, I was hoping that this would be a good step up from the MN86, especially given it's twice the price!
Great and honest review, Tomley! Thanks! 😃 But yeah... It doesn't look too bad, but... Yeah, better to stay away. 😕 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Should they release Kit version for this one, all they sell just a hardbody shell, a plasticy chassis, and crappy electronics just like its mini scale RTR.
No your not wrong that body is so odly proportioned and at that price point they proper cheaped out. Still think other than the proper High end RC Defenders the Double E E101 is the benchmark for scale maybe not quality as replaced most of mines driveline and electronics!
That double E 101 is kinda the grail for scale d110. I've honestly thought about just hanging in there and bitting the bullet an paying the 550 for it off Banggood.
out the box ECX Doomsday Barrage was a much better deal at 100-110 bucks "RTR", its properly geared 390 motor is plenty, decent ESC and steering servo too. this one by MN is being crippled by its electrics and its "side tippy and back flippy" just like the 1/12 original MN D90. at that price I'd want normal RC quality electrics, smaller pinion on a neutral timed 550 can motor (brushed 5 pole?), and some wheel weight! it should have 2200-3000 mah LiPo in the box too, or at least double the size of the lithium ion by running two packs like that one in parallel so it can deliver a little current without choking.
That's super disappointing. Looks like an injora body and chassis with subpar electronics. If they put that jeep Cherokee model out I hope it's based on the mn86 chassis.
Oh, dear. At least the MN 45 and MN 40 are quite cheap and easy to transform into really good, fun RCs, but this thing...best left on the warehouse shelf.
I bet there is worse but you’re look has changed as before you were so enthusiastic about this kind tier and looked into upgrading and spending money on it. . It ain’t great and the 99 is beter but it has spirit (inspiration).

Like any of their other offerings, it looks like they wanted a hardbody out there sitting on a chassis that can be heavily modified. Almost zero crawlers stay the same out of the box within a few weeks. It's no different with MN. They did miss the mark on the proportions of this hardbody. Just have a look at any RC4WD D90 and you'll see that they got it all wrong. It's like they asked redcat to build a lesser quality Gen7 so they could enter the 1/10 market on a budget. I already have a Gelande II D90 decked out to the nines. So there's NO WAY I'd ever cross this bridge. Only if I had money to burn and a build in mind.

Must admit my sons Ftx jimny/paso is a 1st timers cracking truck and it does really well. Obviously like you say this new mc is same price but not as good
Yeah, you did your review, it was a fair review and I will hold that information in good stead from now on, or at least till the next bargain bin clone lands on the porch. So, got any more fast WPL buggies? Maybe a Tomley first. Maybe build a portable trebuchet for the models like this one and launch them out the shop door of Tomley secret world headquarters. Or maybe a Matilda like vehicle that grabs them and throws sub standard R/C hoopties into a flaming pit of yak dung. FOD test a turbine?
Lil' board blown.. The mosfets I saw on it were the same as on those tiny 1/18 scale esc's.. whole board looked like it was ripped from a 1/18 scale truck. a 'normal' servo can kill those. With a 540.. well.. it'll lose most power to heating up. Nice to keep a cupper hot.. And 'top heavy' hardly covers it. Here I was, thinking my Axial SCXIII Bronco was 'top heavy' sheesh..
@@TomleyRC they are so underrated, and seemingly unknown is my top tip for a first crawler ,friend got one and loves it,good build quality, spares, and can actually climb well. V2 even has contra rotating drive shafts etc.. Edit to add it also has a decent steering angle, something the cheaper stuff seems to be really poor at.
Hey Phil I pray that all is well. Great reviews,as always. Austin Powers is 1/9 scale. He’s from Neca. That’s why he won’t fit. I know that I sound like a nerd, but I’m actually a geek. I collect a lot of action figures and rc cars lol
@@TomleyRC and RC truck a 12.8 wheelbase would look with Austin Powers driving it,for sure. I love that you still have him around. I always look for him whenever I watch your videos lol
They also do not create the interiors to fit a proper sized figure either; the interior, seats and steering wheel is just to up the "gee whiz" factor and not to fit a figure in, like a Barbie car. It's just an afterthought and as we can see from the totally incorrect body and off-kilter proportions, who expects the interior to be precise or accurate?
If they lowered the price to around $150 I would say it’s worth it. You would be able to put in a new esc and receiver, bigger battery, and stronger servo while being under $250 total for everything. I think with those upgrades it would be a cool truck.
It looks like that dog that was born without a spine, or neck, or something. It just looks off, and I can't figure out why. I think with smaller tires and slightly shorter shocks it would look more scale.
Who else hates that some of the best bodies are on the cheapest stuff. The only hard bodies I’ve ever had are on some of my tamiya rigs. I’m eyeing that sexy injora rover body for my scx10
When I saw this first, i thought this will good for me, but then that open cheap esc and electronic 3 speed made me not to and saved up a bit more and bought RGT ex 86010 JK pretty good and way better than this lame thing for sure.
If you want to move it on let me know, there's a fair few parts on there that'd get my boys Injora going again! Overall as a RTR, it's definitely crap! I love the 313mm Injoras but the SWB isn't great...
I bought a CMJ crawler in hospital from ebay, ex demo for £4.99... turned out to be fully proportional, plus body change mode. Incredible, toy grade, but has a brake for crawling. P
@@TomleyRC Best I ever got from Banggood is 2 weeks, the issue is Canada Post. They get it to Vancouver in 2 weeks then CP takes 2 weeks to get it the rest of the way.

It ain’t great and the 99 is beter but it has spirit (inspiration).
It is a badass looking shell
No complaining yet.
Thank you for this review. I have watched a few running videos of this rig...And they made it look so capable...lol... But after seeing this video well we now know what to expect ..Thanks' for saving me my hard earned cash...I will not be getting this one ..lol..Big Thumbs' up Phil.
best honest riview for this truck, good job sir.
Thank you
Like any of their other offerings, it looks like they wanted a hardbody out there sitting on a chassis that can be heavily modified.
The body proportions of the MN99s are quite spot on I think. It looks very scale to my eyes at least.
Ironic for an rc Reviewer to say he doesn't like to be swayed by other people's opinion. That being Said thanks for the vid great as always
Haha yeah… although I’ve always been like that. Even with people… I like to judge for myself
Even looking at the strange scale has disappointed me ... 😅
I was thinking of getting a mn99s are they worth it I don't mind if I gotta buy shocks and some extras but just want something to trail walk and maybe climb a few rocks
I’ve heard they may have changed the production of them and they are not as good as they used to be. I might purchase one and find out
@@TomleyRC oh really that's a shame would be awesome if u got one would be nice to know if its worth it or not I did look at the wpl stuff but I really like this land rover body
@@Hjerte_Verke thank you buddy for the awesome advise and I 100% get its not gonna be scx10 or something I more wanna go walking with it on the small trails we got around me and sounds right up my street I love to tinker and modify all my rigs so I'm sure this will be nothing different to the rest haha I honestly need to use facebook more I never go on there always forget its a really good place for rc stuff I also just brought a 3d printer so sure there will be plenty things to print for it to
"It's worse than that, it's dead Jim, dead Jim DEAD".!!
Must admit my sons Ftx jimny/paso is a 1st timers cracking truck and it does really well. Obviously like you say this new mc is same price but not as good
hello.
what crawler do you recomend scale 1/10 , with body LR D90 that don't burn a wallet , with mid range money?
thanks
The Latin music made the test footage even more funny 😂
Thanks for the review. I dodged the bullet on this one. It was next on my list.
you should do a review on the Redcat E10 its a budget crawler and I think you will like it.
looks like the injoria chassis pretty sure it is the added a cheap esc body and lights
Still loving the hand 😻
How about upgrading the electronics, it may have potential to maybe be better afterward 🤔
Hi, nice unboxing and car 😀
Thanks dude
Please review the FS racing rock crawler! Budget friendly and literally no1 had done it yet!
I’ll take a look
@@TomleyRC they are so underrated, and seemingly unknown is my top tip for a first crawler ,friend got one and loves it,good build quality, spares, and can actually climb well. V2 even has contra rotating drive shafts etc.. Edit to add it also has a decent steering angle, something the cheaper stuff seems to be really poor at.
Looks like they went through a Fasttrax bin and picked up the cheapest hideous parts they could find
Some of the Fastrax is actually okay… but I get what you mean
Open electronics on a crawler? Madness!
I almost pissed my self with the gopher clip...lol Alan Alan Alan haha 🤪😉
No brakes? Wow
Hey Phil I pray that all is well. Great reviews,as always. Austin Powers is 1/9 scale. He’s from Neca. That’s why he won’t fit. I know that I sound like a nerd, but I’m actually a geek. I collect a lot of action figures and rc cars lol
Even if he was a little smaller he’d have not fit. But if he’s 1/9 then that would explain why I’ve not found a truck for him to drive yet 😅
@@Hjerte_Verke it’s so frustrating
Wheelspining means a loss of traction, can't say it has plenty of traction while it's sat there spinning it's tyres on the side of a rock
it's had a roof chop! looking at the front screen
Haha
If they lowered the price to around $150 I would say it’s worth it. You would be able to put in a new esc and receiver, bigger battery, and stronger servo while being under $250 total for everything. I think with those upgrades it would be a cool truck.
Yes, $150 is not to bad. Although I’m not sure I’d be able to get past the looks
RGT JK is very good
If you want to move it on let me know, there's a fair few parts on there that'd get my boys Injora going again!
Overall as a RTR, it's definitely crap! I love the 313mm Injoras but the SWB isn't great...
You can buy this chassis on eBay for like 100$ with only a motor and servo it an injora scx10 knock off
Get an Absima Sherpa cr3.4 awesome rig for the money 👌
Im glad i only paid $32 for my mn90, def worth
I bought a CMJ crawler in hospital from ebay, ex demo for £4.99... turned out to be fully proportional, plus body change mode. Incredible, toy grade, but has a brake for crawling. P
Scammer.
what seemed like a million years....I just got something I ordered from Banggood, took 4 weeks to the day.
4 weeks is pretty good 👍
@@TomleyRC Best I ever got from Banggood is 2 weeks, the issue is Canada Post. They get it to Vancouver in 2 weeks then CP takes 2 weeks to get it the rest of the way.
Can you modify it for us with a decent motor and esc to see if it’s any good then?…..that’s what most of us would do if we bought it ourselves 👍🏻
With the wheelbase being wrong, terrible bump steer, caster angle way off and a body that looks wrong… it would be better, it would still be disappointing I think
