    Humor is a great coping strategy when faced with such enormous sadness, especially about the world around you, and things you can't directly control. But it's also not enough. Getting organised, directly DOING something (joining a union; solving the case & discovering the phasmid) can help SO much. It's good to know how to deal with something you can't influence, but it's also good to remind yourself of the power you have - the power of action, the power for change. It's overwhelming, and the deck is stacked against you, but you CAN do something, and however small, it has an effect. Offer small kindnesses and relief to someone you know, for example.
    It helps to go from standing still to a slow walk - that's the literal first step you take, before being able to run.

      Perfectly said, whether it’s possible on not… and as Volition said to Harry “Subdue the regret, stay the course, endure, you’ll get it in the next life, where you don’t make mistakes, do what you can with this one”

    This video is great, and unfortunately I can relate. The only way I was able to get out of bed this morning was by telling myself, “you must become a psycho-locomotor” I knew what I was doing was completely absurd but it worked. We may never escape sadness but we may learn to befriend it.

    You can't ever be certain, that you are right. But if your world suddenly crashes, you know for certain, that it hurts.
    There is no truth but pain, there is no meaning but desperation, and realizing that doesn't even help.
    Thank you for your essay.

    • @theideologyobservatory
      @theideologyobservatory  Місяць тому +1

      I agree with you on a broader scale: pain is, indeed, a fundamental truth. In a Lacanian sense, it aligns with the concept of lack-a void shaped by our desires and the impossibility of ever fully satisfying them. Yet, an interesting paradox arises: when pain becomes constant, it ceases to function as pain, much like happiness or any other emotion. Pain, happiness, sadness, and even boredom lose their emotional intensity when they persist without end-they become a baseline, a state rather than a feeling.
      I’m not here to argue which perspective is correct. Some claim life is defined by the inevitable suffering of existence-the randomness, the lack of inherent meaning. Others suggest that constant pain can transform into growth. But speaking from my own experience, having come from a totalitarian and dictatorial country, pain never turned into growth for me. Perhaps that’s a reflection of my personal suffering rather than a universal truth.
      What I do know, and firmly believe, is that pain is undeniably real. Meaning, on the other hand, is a construct-a fragile narrative we impose to make sense of it.
      Thanks a lot for your view, I can’t believe how deeply connected we are to Disco Elysium

    Amor fati is the choice to love the repeating. I dont think harry loves his repeating in the Nietzschian sense. Maybe in the Schopenhauerian sense

    • @theideologyobservatory
      @theideologyobservatory  Місяць тому +2

      @benzur3503
      Man your comment is soo brilliant!!!
      First of all, you're absolutely right, and second of all
      I'm so excited and I'd like to share my thoughts with on this, you can ignore this comment if you think it's too long but know it's coming from a place of "Fuck Yeah!!"
      The idea for me was that Harry’s repetition being both internal (shaped by what’s left in his mind) and external (shaped by Revachol’s own cyclical nature). Harry isn’t just trapped in his misery; he’s working within it, it's a job that he clearly loves! I tried capturing that in the phrase “for Harry, it’s Tuesday”. It’s not a celebration of fate (amor fati), nor resignation to suffering-it’s just routine, the amor fati was a sarcastic comment made to make even Nitezsche's misery look absurd to Harry hahaha.
      Acohol as a tool for forgetting while Revachol refuses to forget. Harry’s personal cycles and the city’s unchanging state create a contrast that makes every morning a new negotiation of identity-a "New Harry Du Bois Every Morning." This daily renewal carries a strange divinity, and here’s where G.K Chesterton’s radical Christian insight fits beautifully:
      "It is possible that God says every morning, 'Do it again' to the sun; and every evening, 'Do it again' to the moon."
      Chesterton’s view reframes repetition as something sacred, not burdensome. For Harry, repetition isn’t merely his fate or his suffering-it’s his participation in something larger, something beyond despair. Every "Tuesday" becomes a moment where the universe says to Harry, “Do it again.” It’s not just Harry’s repetition of misery-it’s Revachol’s, the world’s, even God’s. And in that constant “doing it again,” Harry’s identity isn’t fixed; it evolves.
      Like I said you're not wronge!! You completed the essay!! And I think adding Chesterton elevated it to something transcendent, which fits Harry’s struggle perfectly.

    • @benzur3503
      @benzur3503 Місяць тому

      @ revachol’s history doesnt quite repeat itself, but it certainly rhymes. The lack of repeating is what leads Harry to try and numb himself until he forgets his drives, until there arent even the peaches to remind him of how he lost everything he had with Dora. To reach his tequilla sunset. Before the game all harry has is misery. After? He has misery and something more. It repeats but it is new in its repeating. It is never without what made it no matter how hard one might try. The only way out is through
