How to Build an Off Grid Shower - Our Portuguese Homestead - Ep9 - Those Weirdos

- Hello! In today's episode (EP9) we build our first structure on our off grid homestead in Castelo Branco Portugal. We build a simple rustic 'Tarzan' shower to use in the short term while we get more infrastructure on the land. This off grid shower uses water heated in the sunshine and runs off a USB shower pump. At a later date we'll build a more robust compost toilet and shower block with heated hot water solar powered shower. But we LOVE our new Tarzan shower and the views while showering are lovely too!
We are now the proud owners of a stunning off grid property in Portugal, Lobateira, which we've renamed 'The Wild Lands'. We've been searching for our own slice off grid heaven to start a homestead. We decided to base our search around the Castelo Branco region of Portugal, as the land here is not only beautiful, but far cheaper than the Algarve. Equally, there are many off grid families in the region, and we wanted to be close to a community of like-minded people.
We were 'stuck' in the UK (again) since returning to see loved ones over Christmas while we waited for our D7 Visa for Portugal. After nearly 6 months of waiting, we got to leave! This was a mammoth task as we had to transit through France to Spain in 24 hours or less! (see previous videos) Now we've finally bought our own at land in Portugal. Follow us on our adventure in the sun! (and sometimes biblical Portuguese rain!!!) As we start turning The Wild Lands' into our own off grid heaven.

We are Those Weirdos, A FAMILY OF 7: 3 people, 2 cats and 2 dogs living and traveling full time living the Vanlife in our self converted Sprinter van.

Nice build guys. Can now enjoy a refreshing shower after a hard days work on the land. Even shower under the stars on the warm summer evenings.
It's a game changer, think at some point we'll get an off grid water heater to, not showered under the stars yet! Building up the courage to 😅

This variety of bamboo is invasive and fast growing. Looks good.
I used to grow bamboos and theyre not the worst but thankfully they're surrounded by granite so will keep them in check 👌♥️

Be careful that the bamboo doesn't throw up a shoot that punctures the plastic liner!

No worries, try knocking into the ground some roof tiles between the base of the shower and bamboo? It won't hurt but may still not prevent that issue? 🤞✌️😀👍

Great job, i used to live in Honduras, we had a Tenko shower as water only 2 times a week, looking at the stars at night was just amazing, love to see people do their own thing, not have to follow everyone else, i wont ever return to live in UK, i want clean air of nature, now i am in the mountains in St Moritz waiting the snow, great channel.

@@TheWildlandersOffGrid in December we have 8 feet or more constantly, artic lorries collect the snow to keep it down, life is to short to live in smog, we do it for our kids, love your lifestyle, not for everyone, only for those whom understand

What a great job you have done...you wouldn't get as good in a top hotel. Bet you can't wait to try. A commissioning party with a glass along with water warmed by the sun....See in Turkey they have dozens of metal water barrels one each house mounted holding water just high enough to gravity feed shower etc....Doesn't need to be very big to warm enough by sun for 3x showers daily??.Looks so good..Jim'n'Sue

Loving the shower, great views, think you need a chair in there, so you can sit in the shower and enjoy the views! Next has to be a log fired hot tub :-)

Great cubicle,if you put cross bracing at the top of structure you could hang a solar shower,should work 8 to 9 months of the year. It is a very heavy duty black plastic container filled with water heated by sun with shower attachments to screw in,we use them a lot in Aus for camping and off grid living.
Good idea might look at that 💡👌❤️🚿 currently using a USB pump and it's working well 😊🚿
You might want to get some outside pavers to make a little path up the side 😊

Lovely shower nothing like nature as your view, we get to use these outdoor showers, when we go on a Game farm trip, they standard on most of the bomas and Tent set ups, very rustic but unique bamboo is awesome 😉

Have you thought about getting a caravan, wooden summer house or portable cabin instead of building a brick house? Love the shower, and the plants will get watered at the same time, nothing wasted. Well done guys 👍🏼💦🚿
Hi, we had intended building a, wooden tiny house, however wood is extortionately expensive at the moment, so leaning towards a, yurt at the mo 😍♥️💯

I would always use black plastic for anything that is remaining outdoors.
It's only for channeling the water, so not a major concern as only a few litres of water per shower

Living on rough terrain is a red flag because of wildfires. In 2017/8 in Portugal many people died in fires. In Portugal it is not allowed to live on agricultural land, do wild camping, or build without permits. The fine can reach 100,000 euros. A housing permit issued by the City Council is required.
Pretty much the entire of Portugal is a fire risk, we have all the apps, have no eucalyptus plantations close etc and our slowly but surely clearing parts of the land to where possible reduce the fire risk. We have applied for a habitation licence as well as an urban article on our ruin. We've seen the local mayor and have an atesdation from him saying we live on the land. Wild camping is no longer illegal in Portugal, staying on your land is not wild camping, hence also the habitation licence.

Showering in the rain is actually very nice, or on colder days we can simply shower in our van 👌
Bougainvillea are beautiful, loads of color, but they can have thorns, so it might not be the best plant near bare skin-?

Showering outside is wonderful we warm the water in the sun ☀️🌞 when it's colder (soon) we'll just use the shower in our van 🚿

Hi, you shouldn't put Bamboo, it is too invasive and not endemic from Portugal !
Came from the local Portuguese nursery and they had hundreds, additionally most bamboo is clump forming and not invasive, 99% of the fruit trees grown here are not endemic!
