  • Living Off Grid and dealing with the Extreme Heat in Portugal can be hard at times especially when a lot of outdoor jobs have to be put on hold or only tackled very early in the morning but it is also a happy time when we think it is the best time for free food

Oh yay! 🎉🎉🎉 so glad to hear that you're going to start renovation on the ruin. Who knows why the outdoor kitchen didn't work out now, perhaps you're meant to build an epic outdoor entertainment area at the ruin, when it becomes your home. Imagine a stunning pool to go with it. I just love Molly ❤ she's such an amazing little soul 💖 Please give her a huge hug from me, Sarah and tell her how beautiful I think she is 😊❤ 🤗

So glad to see the veg's coming from the garden for you and the animals. Wish my tomatoes ripened on the vine. So dry here the skin is splitting. Removed them and am ripening them in filtered light. Less insects too. So many challenges with the garden because of heat, still worth the rewards for items that produce. Okra has been our best producer this year. Love that stuff. Molly is so precious listening to her howling for you is special. The piggies are growing faster that the water level staying for them.

I understand that some of the problem of using trees grown in Portugal for building is that they grow fast because of the climate. When trees grow fast they usually have larger growth rings, subsequently making the wood softer and more susceptible to rot/insect damage. 😔

Awe.....that's sad about the tree! But, there is a reason and a purpose for everything!! Hey Luke....guess who bought Nick a new toy!! I told them they better not tell you because you need your road fixed!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 He was giggling like a toddler!!😂 Timmy is just full of love and Molly is the Daddy's baby!! Sarah, what is that stuff you spoon feed the pigs? When Y'all start working on the ruin, they'll be no time for spoonfeedings. Hey, do Y'all have a materials list for the ruin yet? I'm still helping my Mom and I'm not going to make it to Terceira this September for the Praia da Vitoria Fiestas. That's ok. I need time to finish healing. With all the walking and adventurous stuff i would over do it. I'll tell ya, it's a lot different to live there in your late 20s!!!! But i appreciate it more now! Y'all have a BLESSED and Safe Week! ✝️🙏❤🇺🇸🇵🇹👣🎶🎶🍍☘🌻🤗😎

So glad you took time off to recover from the disappointment of the wood rot. Not sure why Heaven so tests you, but with great suffering comes great relief.
What a great friend Ian is. Very happy you have a new stock of logs! His property looks interesting... think he'd let you film around his place a bit? His retaining walls look nice, and the corner of the house? looks like its geometry is unusual.
Loving you and the aninals enjoying the bounties of the season ❤. So many wonderful fruits and veg.
The food grade diatamaceous earth can cut/scratch eye tissue, too, so please protect your eyes as well as mask around that stuff.
Haha, the kuneboarlets are getting more and more synchronized. The game of tug of war with the corncobs looks fun 😄. Their fur looks really nice, like its softer than kune kune or boar hair. Is it soft?
Ah! Timmy is their workout trainer! He leads them around their habitat to get their steps in, bless Timmy!
Luke is so industrious and smarty. I love him giving that potential mother beam the attention it needs if it's to serve purpose. Go on with your log surgery, Dr. Luke! Ah, sorry the patient is unsuitable. BUT clever pivot to tarp the existing columns & posts to still bring forth your: Compostible Outdoor Kitchen❣ It's sure to serve your needs well for the next few years that you need it. Looking forward to your finishing it and to your tidy of that particular build area. Way to reciver, guys❣🤗 So proud of you and ever appreciated of all the work done so far, nothing is for nothing. It's for something, and it's just a matter of recognizing it as you have. 💖

you could try framing the center column by drilling some holes in the wood sticking a bunch of rebars steel and pouring cement in to incase the column in cement and make it stronger - then put lime and stone on it from the outside to look nice

Here is an idea, but check out its feasibility. Replace the center column tree with three trees that are bound together with metal bands. Rope is made stronger when three strands are wound together. Thus, maybe three tree trunks that are smaller in circumference could become just as strong when bound together. It’s an idea but check with a person who knows about wood working.

This is the reason why life gets easier in handling unexpected things that make us get depressed.
It always seems to be that blessings are given in abundance. It was a blessing that the bad wood was discovered before someone could of ended up under it all
Look a blessing of a tree that fell.
    God knows all things best!!
These events in sequence is there to remind us "don't worry and trust in the lord " it's all a test of our confidence in him and to grow stringer in that. ❤❤❤🎉❤❤🎉🎉🎉❤

Hi luke,, a crazy sugestion,, what if you took the main beam down, split it in to two on the long side. cut a 15cm "V" in the middle of both of them from top to bottom. Treat the inside with some nasty stuff,, motor oil,,,etc. Now you can put up the two half's,, and you have a 15x15cm empty spaces inside, where you can poor a concrete beam,, with rebar and all. It's a lot of work 😕

It’s sad that your timber frame is all invested with insects and rotten. I am going back to the 1960’s in Rhodesia farming days (now Zimbabwe) all our fence poles were wooden and we painted them with creosote to protect them and they are still standing today after 60 years. Today you have other chemicals one could use. I would then purchase a 5 ton truck of stone (the Portuguese use this stone for making roads) I would build a square stone columns around all your uprights. By adding strength, I would rap bird mesh galvanised wire around the upright poles, so when you use cement that will help to strengthen the stonework. Plan B take down the whole structure and use that wood for your “Rhodesian boiler- or a Rocket Stove System “ (hot water for your home). Then look for a company in Portugal that make telephone poles made out of re-enforced concrete poles (they always have damaged poles which they cannot get rid of them). Just some ideas

      @@lukeandsarahsoffgridlife
      Its all about safety
Working with a weapon like a Chainsaw you should allways wear Helmet, Glasses, Gloves and Safety Pants, that's the minimum
Then i could go to the way you aproached the cutting of that hanging pine, you should never had touched it, hanging on a power line that's a job for a professional, the owner should have called the firedepartment or the 112
I'm not trying to be mean
I advocate that Strimmers and Chainsaws should not be sold to anyone that wouldn't have a license to use it, when i say license its not a online course or a basic one like they "sell" in some instruction companys.
These machines are weapons and they should be treated and handled as such.
Agricultural accidents are a big thing in Portugal but the numbers are hidden to the public
