Hello and welcome to today's journey. Today, after years of waiting, we will finally explore what it's like to ride on the newly upgraded railway between Subotica in Serbia and Szeged in Hungary. The track has been upgraded for speeds up to 120 km/h, but unfortunately, we won't be able to experience that speed because the Hungarian operator uses old Russian trains that can only reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h. It's interesting to note that both the Hungarian and Serbian national railway operators use trains from the same Russian company, Metrovagonmash, but these trains were produced in different eras. The Serbian trains are considerably newer and more modern than the Hungarian ones, but we will ride them on another occasion.

Danke..
Any thoughts on how the rail link will increase trade between the two cities?
It certainly contributes, the entire freight traffic between Serbia and Hungary goes on this railway until the reconstruction of the Belgrade-Budapest high-speed railway is completed (this also includes transit trains through these countries), and there is certainly an impression that the two countries have good neighborly relations, since the presidents of the two countries often visit each other...
Nice video.
But isn't 1h 25min. too much time for only 40km of rails, considering they are renovated?
I hope they will clean and renovate the train station in Szeged, Hungary too.
Yes, it is too much time for such a short distance between two cities, and the railway was built for speeds of up to 120 km/h.
Projected speed of railway is 160 km/h, but the operating speed for passenger trains is 120 km/h. Currently, a temporary station is being used in Subotica where there is no electricity due to the works on the high-speed railway, when the reconstruction of the high-speed railway is finished, electric trains will be used on this line and it will be a little faster.

it's quicker by car. like twice as fast...is it cheap the train?
The train ticket costs ~5 EUR for a one way trip, and the train runs 5 times/day. A couple of months ago they decreased the prices for the student and monthly tickets. The student ticket is now 40 EUR (50 EUR before) and the monthly card is now 64 EUR (80 EUR before). I'd say it's worth it if you want to visit Szeged/Budapest in the summer, as border delays in July or August can reach up to 8-9 hours, depending on how lucky you are. But other than that, if you are constantly commuting to work or anything else, it is pretty expensive.
Wow; it's all still under construction! I was there five months ago and it's still not finished. 😢 Edit: Probably due to bad winter weather. 🤷♀️
The winter was mostly dry and mild, I don't know about the plans of the Hungarian side, but the plans for the railway on the territory of Serbia are to be completed by the end of this year, I mean the railway from Belgrade to the border with Hungary, it should be completed, including the station Subotica, from which this trip starts..
