Thanks for your timely video. I use Davinci Resolve to edit my travel videos. Last week my laptop dedicated to image & video editing died. Fortunately, I only run software on that laptop with my videos clips & still images stored on external drives. My videos clips & still images are also backed up on two other external drives. I was sooo glad I had no clips & images on my laptop. Originally the reason for using external HDD was the tiny size of internal SSD memory (compared to the total size of all my video clips) on modern laptops.
Man, the argument that your data is safe isn't very strong... Just like a MacBook can fail, so can an external drive. And trust me, if it fails, recovering that data will be very, very difficult. Especially on SSD drive!
I appreciate you calling this out! I suppose my wording could have been more clear. It’s not necessarily about the data itself being safe. It’s about me and my work and my business being safe to continue. Yes of course, any drive has the possibility of issues, and some have a better track record than others. But the one IN the computer is also connected to many other components that can fail render the drive temporarily useless until they get fixed. So the safety isn’t necessarily the drive itself but the fact that it is detachable and portable if that makes sense… it makes ME feel safe that I can quickly continue working. And of course, as I mentioned at the start, everything gets backed up and even if someone isn’t into the idea of having an external SSD, they should still be backing everything up elsewhere and that will help with this issue too! Again, great point to bring up, thanks for allowing me to clarify!
@@spilak.productions i agree as a bloke in the music community lost years of production data when an ssd failed, hence why I also back up to a nas and an hdd
the possibility of an external drive to fail is slim, it's not like the old HDD who would literally break and make you lose your entire data (which has happened to me because of a simple microsoft update) so i tried a different aspect to always keep my files on a separate drive and use only what i need on my computer, i know that the external drives are also not bulletproof but it gets the job done and it will keep your files fine for years to come if you know how to use them safely.
Great video. So when you are editing a video do you add all of the files from your editing project along with the footage and edit all of it on the SSD? Thanks.
Hey Dunna, many thanks for your video, i totally agree that the prices for internal ssd's in macbooks are just nuts. I got one question for you: how do you backup the data on your external ssd you're working from? Do you just copy it manually to another ssd? Thank you in advance & greetings from Germany! Love your videos!
Good video. Off topic, I just brought some phantom luts for my Sony camera and I wanted to ask how would approach using it for grading? I’ve tried watching other videos but don’t seem to understand. I find your videos more easier to understand
I really appreciate the kind words! For the phantom luts, they come ready to be used on log footage. So you can make sure you choose the right type and out it straight on your footage. Then if they are looking too dark/bright or if you need to adjust the white balance, I would do that somewhere BEFORE the lut in the chain. That’s the short answer haha, there’s a lot of nuance that could go into that if you were to dive into it.
I have been looking for some new SSDs, I always liked my older LEXAR ones, so these look like they might be a good next option! Do you find the laptop sticker solution good long term?
Absolutely! I just replaced my previous one with this new one but the old one lasted forever and I only removed it because my older big drives stretched it out. Here’s the link for the new one I’m using → geni.us/JJos
Hi Dunna I‘m totally on your side. I have a question for a lens for my sony a7cii (an Allrounder, Budget 1300€). Do you have any favs? What would you recommend? Greetings from Switzerland❤❤
Love you Dumna,,but Mac's and SSd internal costs suck and internal SSDs are an issue. Black magic say a lot of their support calls for Black Magic resolve relate to issues that end up being issues because of using an SSD. Mac prices prices for internal SSD suck so much that this becomes the default user experience for Mac's unless you have really deep pockets.
@@dunnadidit It's a well known flaw about SSD's. Simple google search will do it. Your MacBook only shows apps draining energy, not SSD's. I just remembered that your video was sponsored. My apologies. I still use SSD's lol.
LOL @ the sponsored comment. But definitely not the cause of my last response. I’m actually quite interested in this. I tried to find something on Google but the only thing I could find was some error of an ssd that wouldn’t let the computer properly sleep so the battery died. But that’s just a setting issue, not an ssd problem. What you say makes logical sense to me though since anything you plug into a computer will generally require some power. How much, and whether it’s significant enough to make a difference is really the deeper question. I’ve never noticed but it’s hard to know because usually when I have an ssd plugged in I’m also editing videos or photos so that ends up draining the battery a bunch anyway. I’m gonna have to do some testing I think!
Lot's of people asking about the adhesive SSD holder that I'm using so heres a link → geni.us/JJos

Great stuff, cheers for sharing the ideas. Stay safe, have fun, enjoy life! 👍👌🍻

i like how much these kinda drives have came down in price, this time last year that would be easy700$. so its nice to see.
Absolutely! SSD’s have come way down!
First! Great video! They are so tiny! Love it!
Thanks dude! Right!? That was a huge factor in me even considering trying them out!

@@dunnadidit Honestly, if the data is important, you should have a backup on an external and a cloud service.
Absolutely that is correct! I use the external ssd as my main working version, then I backup to a raid device and to the cloud.

Having 4TB is so nice! Heres the link for the pouch → geni.us/JJos
I really appreciate your explanation of how this works, when you find it the best way to use (especially with others) Ummm what back pack is that???
I just got a 1 Tb LaCie external hdd but nice video 👌
Cool! Still rocking the HDDs! If it works then thats great!
@@dunnadidit yeessss, external HDD’s are a mus for me!
I only need something to back up the information on my phone and computer?
I usually use Samsung SSD's but I may give one of these a try...ironically I do need one currently.
I'm the same. I only work off Samsung SSDs for large video projects. For TT/IG videos, I may use my internal Mac SSD.

Any problems with heat? When the drives in the pouch
Not with the lexar! It gets a little warm but nothing I would worry about and definitely not like some other drives I’ve used in previous years.
What’s the difference between Lexar’s SL 500 and ARMOR 700 SSD. I’ve been looking online but can’t find it.
