Context on this game's voice acting: The dub on Chaos Wars is the result of a CEO hiring his family members to do the dubbing job. It has attracted the game lots of attention and is always good for a laugh. The voice acting makes everyone sound like they're stoned. Note that the CEO knew his company couldn't afford a decent localization, but Sony mandated an English translation. The game was obscure enough he knew he could get away with it too (most people who wanted this game would switch to Japanese immediately, anyway).

You know, the only thing I know about this game besides "voice acting bad" is that one of the characters has an ult called "Seed the Puppy" [or maybe low video quality made it look like that] and my jaw still drops every time I say that.
I guess I'm one of those rare few people who was actually looking forward to "Chaos Wars" back when it was releasing. I remember finding a single 1-page ad of it in the GameInformer magazine and managed to preorder a copy. Heck, I even took that page out and put it up as a poster of sorts on a wooden pin board I had in my room. Had that thing up for a good number of years before the board got too run down and had to get thrown out. And you know what, I did enjoy the game. I actually knew about a good number of the franchises in it. And for those I didn't, I quickly did since either I'd later find their games to play, usually on PSP, or just learned general information about them through related media. Its kind of funny listening to your gameplay complaints because...well, a lot of those were just standard SRPG fare at the time. If anything, "Chaos Wars" is on the tamer end. It's main problem just being the very long and constant loading times on PS2 due to how butchered the English porting was. Like, the original JP version apparently didn't perform that great either but the localization did more than just introduce bad voice acting, it outright added new bugs and performance issues. Like one I kept running into was this menu bug that caused everything to turn transparent and basically impossible to read. As for why this game exists? Who knows? Almost nobody asks for them but there are tons of crossover games like this featuring a complete grab bag of niche and popular IPs that exist seemingly just because. You want "Fate", "Nanoha", "Haruhi", "Black Rock Shooter", "Touhou", "Dog Days", and more in a single game? "Nendoroid Generation". You want "Blazblue", "Guilty Gear", "King of Fighters", "Soul Calibur", "Tekken", and more? "Queen's Gate: Spiral Chaos". You want "Blood+", "Darker than Black", "Sgt. Frog", "Orphen", "s-CRY-ed", "Read or Die", "Slayers", and more? "Heroes Phantasia". You want "Familiar of Zero", "Higurashi", "Symphogear", "Twin Angel", "Infinite Stratos", "Di Gi Charat", "Super Sonico", and more? "Super Heroine Chronicle" I could just go on and on, haven't even touched some of the more obvious ones like "Namco x Capcom" or "Super Robot Taisen". The only difference between them and "Chaos Wars" is that "Chaos Wars" somehow got localized. Localized poorly obviously but still localized.
I appreciate that you commented this because when he said how Rin just is randomly either spawned or not in the base when you sometimes require her to progress, i immediately felt like that HAD to have been an issue with the port. Like I genuinely can't think of a japanese game I've played with that level of faulty flagging. Sometimes there's glitches or bugs that can break flags for a singular instance sure, but a whole necessital & recurring event type not flagging the required NPC spawn?
I definitely doubt that translator on reddit's legitimacy because of this. although "tengaio" (天凱凰)is some chuuni nonsense, it doesn't sound like katakana at all, and anyone would guess the "ten" was 天 in relation to the heavens. Then again, its not like claiming to be the chaos wars localizer holds any prestige, so maybe that was just an easier explanation.

Which means most of the time when someone dies you're stuck with em anyway.
Growlanser is my absolute favorite series, and it's wild that it was featured in a crossover game. I really love 2, 3 (Bundled on the PS2 Called Generations) and 4-Wayfarer of time. There is a PSP Remake for 1, but that is only been partially fan-translated, and I cannot wait to get for it to be completed. There's also a 5 & 6. I haven't played much of it since they went with 3D-Models over sprite work.
Just a few things since I’m too obsessed with this game. Hiro does not use a sword, she is one of the two characters that uses scythes, and yeah there are way too many swords. The element for a character does actually contribute to damage as well, not just resistances. More often than not, Hyoma will do more damage with fire attacks than water more often than not. The characters in the base you have to talk to advance the story are always there when they need to. It’s still easy to get locked here if you don’t know about that though. Also that one hit fiasco, notice the letters saying “death.” It’s just a death status. Not everything in this game is a glitch… just most of it Rin doesn’t have a special realize form like the other three main characters, so you didn’t miss anything with her. And just general advi- oh who am I kidding, nobody cares. I’m going to say it anyways. The general crew size I like is around 6-8, giving you some variety as well as being able to utilize skills that give you stat boosts when characters are in the party but not on the field.
Yuri-- oh I'm sorrry, _Uru's_ dub voice sounds like a more deadpan flavor of the late 00s/early 10s gay best friend. like, you could put his voice clips over some vaguely twinkish guy filing his nails and the energy would fit.
@1:03:00 - If you'd ever played the Disgaea series and spinoffs, you'd probably be better acquainted with the randomized strengths and weakness of various opponents. Can't tell you how often I instinctively thought an enemy that's emitting flame would be weak to ice and strong to fire only to find out that it's entirely random, so burning a fiery enemy is entirely possible!
Okay to be fair though. Golden Boy's voiceacting was peak comedy and it was all on purpose. The voiceactor for Kentaro was mostly ad-libbing. It is similar to the Ghost Story ENG VA.
After this video, the only thing I understand is that the game itself is worth playing only to giggle from the bad voice acting, since you really can't find anything quite like it.
Oh, Chaos Wars...I really enjoyed Shadow Hearts and Growlanser so initially thrilled to hear the cast in a crossover was being localised. Then, well, the result. It feels like a fever dream to me but no it's very real and it's out there. I totally believe that reddit thread that's "this was translated with zero context given for anything, including character names" and that no doubt that carried over to the voice 'direction'. I'm surprised the voice actors didn't totally butcher Hayatemaru though, they keep giving that name a good try (Yoichi as 'Yoshi' though...).
I was SOOOOO excited for this Game when it was being released, as I am a Gungrave and SH Fan. I can usually deal with Bad VA, but for the first time ever I had to change to Sub. Thanks for covering this :).
As someone who lives and breathes obscure weird JRPGs I got this day one! It's definitely a bizarre mix of stuff which I was half familiar/half confused by. The random skill learning reminded me of a less refined version of the SaGa titles, which I adore and seeing as how we were in the midst of a drought of the series was kind of happy to see. But yeah like most Idea Factory titles it's a mishmash of great concept and severely unbalanced execution. Far from the worst game I've played but all the issues definitely put it below average for sure. If some stuff was ironed out could see it being a very solid 8/10, instead it's closer to something like 4.5/10.
I still love this video game. I’m well aware it’s trash, but I still have great memories of this game and I revisit it a lot. As such I probably know more about this game than I ever should.
Oh my god!! I thought it was just bad dream when I was 16!? But chaos wars is real!? I spent full price on it hhaha, also switching it Japanese voice acting did not help at all… some how they phoned it in too
Surprisingly, Compile Heart and Idea Factory International have acknowledged several monsters featured in this game. They also have voices that aren't grating, so that's a plus.
Pretty sure SRW games at least tell you who's mandatory for the next map so you can throw parts on them(and money) to try and make them survive the next stage.
"why is the music jamming" it's because the ost was composed by Sound Horizon (or rather Linked Horizon), the same band worked on the soundtrack of Bravely default and made the opening songs of Attack on Titan
You won't like it if you play this game because the music is very overused. Like, I'm pretty sure they only have like 3 musics in the whole game, and one of them is the song you'll hear 99% of the portion of the game
I'm only 3 minutes in and I'm like 'yeah you can do emulations random guy I'm not subscribed to! .....how did I get here again?' but seriously I'm in for the ride
bro did not know i would ever hear anyone in the world who watched golden boy too lol i had a vhs as a kid and loved that motorcycle woman episode lol i watched the series a few years ago, VERY EDUCATIONAL !!
I disagree with the assessment of Shadow hearts, Alice is not "A quiet type anime girl" That's like a surface shallow understanding of her character. Kindhearted, open-minded, snarky, sweet, sneaky, self sacrificing, brave as well and boiling all that down to "Yuri's horny and Alice is a quiet type" Will make people who never played them think: "Wow, these sound like bad games. I'm not gonna play them." And its why instead of giving cliff-notes on the characters and games- you can link to videos explaining it or just stick to talking about the crossover itself.
4:33 The remake of Trials of Mana has the weirdest mix of voice acting I may have ever heard before. Some of the voice actors are really good like Duran, Hawkeye and Charlotte(Yes the character is annoying, but I think that was the point and the voice actor does a great job with that). But then some of the others are really, really bad, like Riesz and about half or even most of the elementals. Then you've got some in the middle like Kevin and some of the side characters.
This is literally the "we are going to do a super robot wars WITH BLACKJACK AND HOOKERS" or at least it feels like it. It was a nice concept but Idk nowadays how good it would flow in the market. Maybe if they invented neptunia and threw it there at the time who knows.

When I got the game as a kid, I dead ass thought they recorded the voice acting in the back room of the gamestop I bought it from. XD
Yuri-- oh I'm sorrry, _Uru's_ dub voice sounds like a more deadpan flavor of the late 00s/early 10s gay best friend. like, you could put his voice clips over some vaguely twinkish guy filing his nails and the energy would fit.
OMG YOUR SO RIGHT
@1:03:00 - If you'd ever played the Disgaea series and spinoffs, you'd probably be better acquainted with the randomized strengths and weakness of various opponents. Can't tell you how often I instinctively thought an enemy that's emitting flame would be weak to ice and strong to fire only to find out that it's entirely random, so burning a fiery enemy is entirely possible!
As a fan of Shadow Hearts, it really hurts to hear Yuri (Uru’s name in the shadow hearts came from) talk like that.
Wow. I really can't move my body
You act like the English voice acting in this game doesn't add like 3 points worth of quality.
Okay to be fair though.
Golden Boy's voiceacting was peak comedy and it was all on purpose. The voiceactor for Kentaro was mostly ad-libbing.
It is similar to the Ghost Story ENG VA.
Zard is giving bargian-bin Danny Devito
After this video, the only thing I understand is that the game itself is worth playing only to giggle from the bad voice acting, since you really can't find anything quite like it.
bad voice acting... my first thought is Megaman "WHAT AM I FIGHTIGN FOOOOAAAOOOOAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!" and "Dr. Wawe?"
I'm fine with kids doing character's voices..if it's for a bloody kid. But that's a grown man bro. No adult sounds like that 😂
Oh, Chaos Wars...I really enjoyed Shadow Hearts and Growlanser so initially thrilled to hear the cast in a crossover was being localised.
Hayatemaru is basically an average 4channer user. "Come on guys, recruit Hitler. It will be funny." lol
5:29 I'm sorry, but that delivery was perfect. Good to learn more about this game.
I still love this video game. I’m well aware it’s trash, but I still have great memories of this game and I revisit it a lot. As such I probably know more about this game than I ever should.
Yuri Hyuga in a game with bad voice acting: Aw, sh*t, here we go again.
Whoever voice directed this had to be indefinitely half asleep or a phantom
Oh my god!! I thought it was just bad dream when I was 16!? But chaos wars is real!? I spent full price on it hhaha, also switching it Japanese voice acting did not help at all… some how they phoned it in too
This video was [𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆]
That Grisaia meme (this video in general tbh) brought back suuuuch memories.
They do indeed
To be honest i liked this game when i was a kid. I played it with my sisters although we never beat it but it was good memory
Ramzaes, is that you?
The GG Smell of the game fits so well considering GG1 was an kusoge too
This gonna do numbers fr.
It looks a lot like they tried to copy Disgaea games.
"Anything can happen in this world"
anything can happen in a roll hack
If this game had many cross overs and some from Atlus, I'm surprised it didn't feature Dante from the Devil May Cry series. 😂🤣
ALRIGHT WHY DOES URU SOUND LIKE GAY PINOCCHIO 😭
my thoughts exactluy
@CheesyRam , is that you? Nah, probably no- [Gungrave theme intensifies]
Good to see you again, Raz.
I'm only 3 minutes in and I'm like 'yeah you can do emulations random guy I'm not subscribed to! .....how did I get here again?'
but seriously I'm in for the ride
I’ll have you know that I did subscribe and like before you got to that part of the video.
"God Damn the stupid clock!!!" Got me. XD
bro did not know i would ever hear anyone in the world who watched golden boy too lol
i had a vhs as a kid and loved that motorcycle woman episode lol
i watched the series a few years ago, VERY EDUCATIONAL !!
You forgot the masterpiece of "Dinner, Dinner"
Yay! Another person who fall into the rabbit hole that is Chaos Wars brainrot
Can we agree that the opening is still a banger tho
uru: its us coming out :3
I played this game with a friend when I was kid. We loved it.
The only thing worse than the voice acting is the usage of Spongebob clips.
I'm going to check this game out. I loved the Neptune games. They're so funny & this one seems right up my alley
Thanksgiving must be a ball with this family between bites.
Woah, its Ram Zaes! Missed you buddy! I just wonder why do you keep changing your name and brand and deleting old videos?
Arc rise fantasia mentioned!! That games voice acting is bad, but it had heart, and the actors at least tried kinda.
TLDR. Nepotism.
42:19 😂
Couldn’t stop laughing at this bit
1:05:35 Yo, that's some weird-looking bird.
Ok but i love this artstyle
I actually enjoyed this game back then i still remember spending lots of hours stats up every characters hahaha,at the time when my favorite game is games with big cast of characters like suikodens this game just feels fun (probably also help that i was just a teenagers so im not too bothered with the VA)
The only other game on par with Chaos Wars is arguably House of the Dead 1 & 2
Goldman’s VA was pretty blursed
I love the voice acted cutscenes and character designs from this game ngl, I think I'll try the Growlanser games.
they're really good. especially 1
Growlanser is seriously one of the most fun series ever
50:29 bro isn't even trying
Ram Revie has a second channel?
It's bad voice acting, but the low energy feeling is quite nice. Quiet night in. Nobody screaming. Would be good if the game wasn't crap.
I don't know if you take suggestions but a game I think might be cool to talk about is The World Ends with You.
I remember me and my brother getting this game. had a good time laughing at just every single thing about it
8:53 POCKET DOGS MENTIONED 🙌🙌🙌🙌
The voice acting is bad but it’s not actually a bad game, it’s pretty fun just really grindy. E tomahawk for the win!
Since when did ramzaes have a second channel?
RAMZEAS?
I remember buying this game when i was like 9 years old in 2009 for my little sister, she never played it but god if i did
Tho I didn't speak a word of english so i never knew what was going on or the mechanics
Kinda wish i could replay ot but i really don't feel like using emulators
Holy shit I didn't know Randy Feltface was a JRPG buff!
A Dub full of energy
this is only infamous because the localizers were nepotistic and they did not care about the game they were tasked with translating...
kinda like all Localizers in this god damn industry
Trouble Witches back on the 360. The Eng dub was pretty bad. Feels about the same as this honestly.
