The craziest part about this video is that it came at the end of a very close battle with the other school’s Trombone section, and the rest of the band had never heard them play this song. They looked confused during the build up and that’s why they reacted so hype to the solo, because not only was it absolutely incredible, they had no idea it was coming and being rehearsed behind the scenes. Furthermore, this is only shortly after the section learned the song, since this was the official “unveiling” moment. Which means it’s probably not even these players’ best performance of the song.

That first time performing something you’ve been rehearsing for while, when the emotion is at its highest with all the anticipation and excitement of putting something new out there for everyone to hear, and before all that emotion is clouded up by trying to get all the details right…that’s when MAGIC happens. I guarantee this group chased the feeling that THIS performance brought every single time they played it. It’s awesome they got this moment recorded for them and the world to see for ever. It’s truly something special here.

The trumpet section was the most funnest section as the Trumpeters in that section are fun to hang out with, except that one emo guy. Flute was ok, They’re mostly serious and passionate, though they have a fun side as well. That energy is unreal. The first time I got to play in front of over 80,000 people in my college marching band was surreal. The cheering is so loud you can barely hear yourself playing no matter how loud it is. It's as if the trombone were fused to his soul to allow it to speak. How he's able to convey so much emotion with an instrument like that shows how deeply music is intertwined with our rawest emotions.

What I absolutely love (besides that otherworldly trombone solo):
    - they played this during a trombone battle against another school. Though no winners were declared, from this alone I think we all know who "won."
    - the reason why the rest of the band looks so surprised and hyped is that this is the first time anyone out of the trombone section heard this piece.
    - even the crowd behind them watching the game got hype for it. If you look closely, you'll see people immediately start standing up and beelining over to the band section.
    - though it doesn't show in this clip, in the original video, the roar from the crowd and the band were deafening. They all KNEW what they just witnessed and they dunked on the other band h a r d.

i remember watching this when it came out and was absolutely amazed like everyone else. I really wanted to play this solo but never had nearly the range for it. Now, looking back on this solo, I realise my range is very near what I need for this, so I'm going to start pushing my range up in order to be able to play this solo, hopefully half as good as Bilal does here. wish me luck!

      Baritone player: trombones are baritones
Me: the baritone player who posted this so if they were the same how would he not know
Answer man: They aren't the same because pushing against this extra resistance makes playing high notes easier on the baritone than on the trombone. What the two instruments do have in common, is that they play approximately the same range of notes. This is because the length of tubing is roughly the same in both
