      Agree. However, it has been mentioned in the documentary that Japan has less number of workforce, therefore, they have instead normalized the overtime of work to fill the gap. It's actually really difficult for the government which to sacrifice, so they implemented programs that could motivate birth rate without compromising workforce.

This is how stupid Japan is, they give women Fridays off to go out on dates so that it could lead to marriage and kids. Problem is most men don't have Fridays off. Well if I was a 25yr Japanese women from a family of only childs, just finished uni and now have to find a job in a country where everyone is over qualified and there’s not an abundance of good paying jobs because their all taken, and I have to look after both my parents and my grandparents and might even have to worry about looking after my spouses parents or grandparents, I wouldn’t want to have a kid. That’s 5 people I have to look after not including myself or if I plan to have more than 1 kid or accidentally have twins. Parents+grandparents+own kids+ im pregnate and can’t go to work and have to look after my kids= my spouse has to take care of 11 people with his job.

    Womenomics is all well and good on the surface, but typically women who focus on their careers put off getting married and having kids longer anyway, if at all. Actually a huge part of the reason why so many countries are experiencing low birth rates now is because my generation (millennials) are having a harder time achieving financial stability. Why would you want to start a family when you can barely sustain yourself? There has to be more incentive than the government just saying "Well we need more of our citizens to breed so our economy won't collapse." You have over qualified people settling for low skill, low wage jobs (or temporary-contract work), and they don't even make enough to afford to live by themselves. Housing is expensive, childcare is expensive...all in all I can totally understand how many people would rather bypass parenthood altogether.

    • @christiansoto9755
      @christiansoto9755 3 роки тому +6

      It's funny to see that. A huge part of developed nations is that when women are educated or have careers, the birth rate of that nation slows down. One part to offset this is immigration, but Japan is stubbornly refusing this because they want to keep their culture homogenic. They would rather see their culture die off than see it change into something else. Stupid man

Short of relaxing their laws/attitudes about immigration, Japan is looking at a real crisis.

    What I learned about Japan so far;
    1. stagnant population growth (death and births are at balance, not necessarily a threat to the country's future)
    2. People working hard for personal economic growth, competitive hardworking culture
    3. People prefer urban to rural life, major cities are highly favored.
    4. Unemployment is due to location of the job, not necessarily lack of employment opportunities.

    Generally good analysis, but at the 6 min mark they say, with regard to Japan during WW2, "Millions of people lost their lives." This is true (estimated between 2.5 and 3.1 million in total combined military and civilian) and especially costly with an estimated population of only 72 million citizens in 1940.
    Then the video goes on in the next sentence to say, "600 million industrial facilities were destroyed." What? Obviously they cannot mean that each and every Japanese citizen (man, woman, and child) on average owned or ran 8.33 industrial facilities each. That would be absurd. Somehow there was a proofreading failure during production.

    The Sunk Cost Fallacy is a powerful force. EVERYONE, prostitutes, strippers, cat-ladies...they ALL say that their lives are great, they aren’t lonely, and that they regret nothing. All their life choices were the right ones. I once talked with a homeless drunk who lived alone on a beach, and to hear him brag about how many women he’d “loved” back in the day, he seems to think he was a winner at life. It’s a defense mechanism that we use to protect ourselves from painful truths.
    People my age grew up in a digital world. Our role models weren’t real people, but fantastical fictional characters. We don’t believe God is watching us or that anything matters unless people are paying attention to us. Keeping our (perceived) physical beauty for as long as possible seems more important than investing decades of life into loving and nurturing a child. One survey of American kids had “social media influencer” ranked #1 for desired careers. No one sees the value of intimate relationships like family. We’re making poor choices.

      Yea I don’t understand why everyone is panicking so much. The problem is that unrelenting growth is unsustainable. With regard to impact on the environment, that can be mitigated with higher efficiency farming and high density housing (aka more people in less space). The real problem, is that governments and business are still pushing for continuous growth with same tech and practices they have been experiencing growth in. Instead of throwing more land or more bodies at a problem, find a way to increase efficiency with what you have. Find a way to make the same output with fewer resources and fewer workers involved and take up less space. Be creative. But many of the elite in positions of power have stayed where they are because they lack innovation and now they are scared because they want to keep the status quo without changing with the times.

    Japan will not die out. Its population will simply collapse to 40 million in 50 years. And start growing again slowly. When a population starts decline, it doesn't stop, what makes you think that in 50 years, women will suddenly realize that, we need to start having more children. The very few children born today will grow up thinking that it's ok to have a career and live for yourself instead of having children. So why would things suddenly change unless there's a catastrophic war

    This program is very one sided is that it only focus on economic growth. It doesn't talk about the benefits of having a smaller population. Japan is over Populated as a country, people cannot afford to buy an apartment because it's too expensive and the apartments are very small. What about the environmental impact with a large Population, over fishing etc. With fewer people it would be more affordable and better for the environment. Other countries with a much smaller population than Japan but has a higher standard of living. Shorter working hours etc... Let's not always focus on Economic Growth but focus on Standard of Living. Would the Japanese enjoy a better standard of Living with 130mil people or with only 60mil people? Let's look at other countries like Australia with only 25mil people but with one of the best Standard of Living. Same goes for China. If China has 500mil people only it would enjoy a much better Standard of Living for it's people. Same for Hong Kong. If HK has less people the people wouldn't have to live in cages.

It is where old people will soon outnumber the young. That is where the problem starts. There will be one person who has to take care of 4 grandparents and their parents in their old age. That is if they don't marry. After marriage, well double that number. No it is just not feasible. Lower population is fine as long as young people get replenished. That is not the case here. Trends fluctuate. Japan's birth rate reached its nadir in 2005 @ 1.25. It's currently 1.36. People wrongly assume a downward trend means a continued fall to zero. Japan's population is levelling out to suit the times, in which 50% of current jobs will have been made obsolete within the next 25 years. Japan's population is already bloated at 126 million on an archipelago the size of California which has a population of 40 million. Most of Japan is mountainous, non-arable land. Japan is surrounded by hostile neighbors so in a precarious time of conflict it could easily become isolated and not be able to feed its population. What is needed is not more people but a more sustainable economic model that doesn't require and ever increasing population to sustain it.
