    Regarding chatter: The big radius cutter will increase chatter because it puts more load perpendicular to the lathe axis when cutting. Especially when taking very slow cuts.

    • @DevilDog36th
      @DevilDog36th 2 місяці тому

      Big radius will hold up to the interrupted cut better, but for less chatter after you're no longer interrupted, smaller radius like you said would be best

    That chunky lathe tool probably uses more pressure to cut and causes more chatter. It’s worth a try to see if the smaller nose radius tool would cause less chatter due to less tool pressure needed.

  • @agritankiste

    Being an apprentice in turning on a machine tool, I was taught that when you machine forging or foundry blanks, the best way you do it is to use a resistance carbide insert of the WNMG or DNMG type.
    Thank you for always making us learn new stuff in an interesting way.

    • @armageddontools
      @armageddontools 2 місяці тому

      Unofortunately with inserts its not that easy ,there is dozen submarkings on them that specify geometry of said insert and its purpose. WNMG is geomety type designation
      ,same insert can be used for rough and heavy work(WNMGRP ,RM ) or finishing pass (FH).
      Going into inseret types and which one to use for what alloy is a pandoras box.
      To simplify it as much as i can since i dont want to write a novel-
      heavy roughing cut -negative rake angle ,nose radius 0.8-1.2mm,inserts with 45°- 55° angle -tilt the knife if needed in holder.
      it takes a lot of horse power to do roughing operations fast,machine needs great rigidity ,cut forces are high as well as depth of cut.
      Light cuts and long peaces(like shafts for example that you dont want to chatter -turn from chuck to the tailstock) and finish work -Positive rake angle ,0.2-0.4 nose angle
      A big nose angle is robust, but it calls for a greater amount of machine power and has a greater propensity to vibrate.
      A tiny nose angle is weaker and has a smaller cutting-edge engagement, both of which might make it more vulnerable to the effects of heat.
      Negative rake angle is more resistant to impact and overheating but it needs more force to cut ,it creates more chatter.
      Positive rake angle will make easier cut and leave better finish but its more prone to chipping when you do interrupt cut.
      To understand all this stuff better you should read some old books on using lathe ,they cover geometry of lathe knifes,some of them might be old but the tools havent changed at all ,same principles apply you just dont grind them anymore by your hand and materials are better and stronger and you can cut harder stuff but geometry remains the same.
