    Phenomenal cinematography and editing in this one! Making damascus steel has been boring to watch for quite awhile, but this one is like a movie. I really appreciate that the songs used in this one sound like they came from the new Dune and the level of detail in editing to the chosen soundtrack. Kudos, Jamie!

    I did not realize how much I missed these videos until now. I love seeing you embark on knife or sword making projects Alec! I would love to see more content like this. Maybe it would be an idea to make more knives and swords inspired from movies and series? I’m thinking almost a “Binging with Babish” style of series. You have gone the route of historical blades, maybe fiction inspired blades next?

    Ok ok ok ok ok .....I am a machinist and at 7:32 when you discovered how to control the twist rate using air I lost my mind in the best way possible! Alec this is good stuff! • @Yossus
      @Yossus 8 місяців тому

      Can you offer an explanation of how it works? My intuition would be that the air would cool the piece down, and so it would twist less where blown, not more. Obviously it’s the opposite. But why?

    Can’t wait to see which way you stretch it! At first I was thinking you have to stretch the twists the entire length of the blade for the cool factor. But then I got to thinking about how much more awesome it would look to see the twists stretched the other way to create almost a mosaic blade. So after thinking of both I vote for mosaic, stretching the twists on the twisted axis and make a mosaic blade Alec, the spice demands it!

  • @DjDolHaus86

    A little tip for getting the alignment correct on your twisting jig would be to do the welding on the morse taper end in situ. Put the square tube in the chuck, put the taper in the stock, nudge the taper onto the end of the tube and then weld, remove tube from chuck and cut to length = perfect alignment and less distortion when twisting the hot stock

It would take a lot of material, but might be cool to work with patterned steel on a larger scale than a sword/knife. Plus you'd probably be the only person able to say you have a Damascus truck.

    Using the lathe to twist the bars was a really good idea. It's a machine to work with and as long as you don't actually damage it then why not get another use out of it. You just need to devise a device that twist the other end at the same speed as the chuck end rather than just holding it. Shouldn't be that hard if you use a belt from the chuck to power it. It's just getting the belt from the chuck to a wheel attached to something clamping the metal at the other end so you need to translate rotation one forward to rotation at the side so maybe a transfer box of some kind to move the rotation 90 degrees. Shouldn't again be hard for someone like you and maybe a plate or shield over the ways and anything else that it might make sense to protect.

    This content is what I subscribed for years ago! Hopefully Alec has rediscovered his MOJO, and long may it continue.

    I've been watching wristwatch revival. I would love to see Alex trying to make a pocket watch case. I think it would suit his skills.

    Hey Alec, I wonder if you could discuss in one of your videos how you work with or engage with mistakes or failures during the creative process? As a fan and aspiring creative I'm always curious to learn how the more experienced manage their expectations and hopes when making.

    I would love to see you do the different designs from both movies. Where the new movies version is closer to how they are described in the original books. The version from the David Lynch movie is truly beautiful.

    Despite the tiny cracks, the way you forge welded that billet was bloody impressive!

    I thought my phone was spying on me when I saw this recommended as I was literally listening to Jessica receive the Maker in the Dune audiobook at the time. Then I realised I’m subscribed to you and practically always listening to Dune so it was all but guaranteed.
