Land of the Lustrous is a deeply original and emotional masterpiece. It is a glistening gem of a manga and a shining example of how to address the complexities of the human psyche in an intriguing way So I also recommend it to y'all. Please try it out 💎🙏
I've read Land of the Lustrous twice in one year (first was by myself and the second was a read along with friends) and can say without a doubt that Phos is in my top 3 protagonists of all time. Their development is amazing

I actually just picked up the manga this past weekend after watching the anime a while back and it was one of the best, most captivating stories I've read. You're right in saying that it is weird because holy shit, those last ten to twenty chapters were out there, but it is one of those stories that you will remember and look back on fondly.
It's one of the manga I want to read the most, but I'm squirming in my seat waiting for a Season 2 that may never come, so I'll give it one more year for an announcement, then read it. And, yes, Antarcticite is my favourite character thus far, as you could probably tell. Also, for the ad revenue, just make a three-minute outro that's you screaming the lyrics to 'Tell Me Why' into a karaoke mic, on loop if need be.
Don't wait for a season 2, it will probably never come or it will be some years at least because Studio Orange is finishing the Beastards adaptation first. The manga is incredible, it goes above and beyond what happens in the anime and while being in hiatus at the moment it is totally worth it.
The anime was really good and was what got me into the series but let's be honest it was clearly a manga bait. Like one of those series that act as an advertisement for its manga and nothing beyond that.
Land of the Lustrous and Demon Slayer are the only two mangas I refuse to read because of how of an incredible experience the anime is. But the difference between them is that I think Demon Slayer's story sucks ass while Land of the Lustrous is really damn good. Actually now that I think about it, Land of the Lustrous is probably my favorite incomplete anime ever. It depends on if you count The Great Pretender as incomplete or not lol
Glad to see some praise for hnk, I don't know how to describe this story as anything but beautiful from the art, depth in the cast, story and overall feel of the world hnk is something totally unique to fiction and executes it's unique story beautifully
This series is incredible in every aspect and it is one of the best mangas I've ever read, it's unique in a way that really there isn't anything else like it. I'm glad you decided give it another chance and "finish" it (it's not actually over but still...). If you haven't already I suggest you watch the anime too, it's one of the best adaptation of a manga I've ever seen: it captures the spirit of the manga while being unique in its on rights being made entirely in 3D CG (with some 2D here and there) and the way it is implemented is superb because it takes advantage of the possibilities and solutions an all CG series can offer. I really think it sets a standard for every 3D anime for how good it is. The anime is also a fantastic starting point for those who want to check how's the series prior reading the manga.
Been having this on my to read list for a long time already, basically making it my highest priority still ongoing manga after I read the finished ones that I planned to, and now with hearing there's actually a colored version of it now's the best time to start I guess (If I find the motivation what with all the hiatuses and stuff). The anime adaptation for it in complete CG was also fricking amazing and if you didn't enjoy the fights in the manga I'd suggest at least checking those out in the anime (Diamond's fight with Shiro, the moon dog thing, is still one of my top anime fights, probably ever, the directing was just so well done). I'd say the only one that I can think of that has a similar aesthatic, at least similar to the anime, is Shinsekai Yori buuuut you don't wanna read the manga for that and just stick with either the anime or novel here ^^

She then is able to speak to the Admirals (jelly fish creatures or something) which is probably her starting to open up to outside possibilities for finding a job she can get for Cinnabar being her motivation. Though she was able to see more of the world, she loses a part of herself, her legs which are then replaced by Ventrico(sus)’s brothers shell made of agate, being what held her back from going to many places. She then loses her arms which are replaced by the gold and platinum alloy making her a whole lot stronger but also being too heavy for her representing the immense guilt of her once incompetence to save antarc which she then strives to be like with hair short in a similar fashion and using antarc’s sword. A while later, curiosity gets the best of her and she starts to suspect her sensei which knows lunarians all too much. Trying to know more about lunarians, her head is lost which is the little suspicion being replaced by Lapis Lazuli’s head giving phos bigger insight into lunarians which represents phos trying to take a look at lunarians from a different eye. Literally and figuratively. This is also the last form we see her in where she is remotely sane. She joins the lunarians taking advantage of being able to hold herself together to talk to them with the lunarian eye she receives being that symbol of her change of sides. She then starts manipulating other gems to join her which some do and some don’t. The gems that come for the ride are ones with grudges or just want to do something different. Then she goes back another time only to be distrusted going near sensei so every gem left on the island with sensei completely breaks phos into pieces and each gem hiding her pieces. This is her breaking point. About 100 years or something later she is put back together by the very person she distrusts so when she awakens she tries to get her sensei again. The for she is in now is unrecognizable from and of her older or even last one. She has broke and gone insane with an obsession with making sensei pray. She is then able to get back to the moon and start planning an attack on the island. It happens and it instigates the civil war. By the end her form resembles a human, a creature with the soul that is the lunarians, the bone that is the gems, and the flesh that is the admirals. As well as wanting vengeance against sensei. It happened and after all that, she looks back and sees her old self, selfish, carefree, free, lazy, and adorable. She doesn’t recognize her old self but all she could say was something she used to always say over 200 years ago, “How cute”. She is now human. Because she broke herself.
@@NewPGMpro they use masculine pronouns most likely because of adamant. And they dont canonically use either because its in japanese where they use mostly masculine pronouns but that isnt the same thing as he. They are officially not any gender so using any pronoun in english shouldn't be a problem

This series is as beautiful in visuals in both manga and anime, and it has done something that very few media properties have managed to do: It frightened me. I won't say much else, but the later stages of Phos' journey are legitimately terrifying to think about. "Nightmarish" doesn't quite describe it.
I'm so glad Land of the Lustrous is getting more attention from the community. I finished the manga back and December and it's one of my all time favorites. I hope Orange comes back for S2!
I adore writing essays about land of the lustrous, the fandom has just enough video essays to point me in the right direction of what to analyse and focus on but not so much that there's no work on my part, for every video essay i watched on this anime i have created one that no one has made before through my own connections and want for more content I trusted Ichikawa (the author) to have ever detail be important and i am rewarded every time with some analysis work i am very very proud of, like a theory that cinnabar foresaw the rest of the series from chapter 10 onwards, how the story is a Shonen turned classic tragedy through it's Buddhist ideology , cinnabar's completely unappreciated character arc. And i haven't even tried looking into Dia and Bortz character growth yet
Im so glad you made a video about Hoseki no Kuni. I've been waiting for at least a content of it on youtube for 2022 and I dont find any of them. Like this manga is a hidden gem, the ending and the hiatus literally destroyed me. 🗿
This series is so special to me. It's the only series I've ever gone out of my way to buy the physical copies cause I want to support it that badly. I've never seen a series be so cruel to it's cast yet so beautiful to see. Every character changes in ways unexpected. While phos changes should make you feel alienated from them and not like them, the way all the other characters react to phos helps keep you on their side even when you can tell what they're trying to do isn't going to end well.
I've been a HUGE fan of this series for about 2 or 3 years now, started with the anime and I'm fully caught up on the manga and have discovered a lot about not only the background, but the creator Haruko Ichikawa. One of the most interesting parts for me is how she's been developing the story since she was in highschool (she's around 30 years old currently) and it's filled with deep Buddhist symbolism. I mean, like, DEEP. so much that I cannot get into it, so I really suggest looking into it if you're interested. I really really hope that we get a season 2 for the anime, there's just so many things I want to see come to life in animation and characters that I'd love to see. I cannot reccomend this series enough, however there is currently a hiatus that's lasted over a year now so all of the fans are waiting to see what happens next after being left with the intense cliffhanger. This manga will most likely break you, I've had friends who've had actual breakdowns over the characters and the author herself said that sometimes she needs to take breaks from writing... yeah. it's rough for us hnk fans out here. it's amazing nonetheless, and it is my favorite manga of all time.
I am on a personal mission to get a bunch of my friends into this manga + catch up to it just so I can have someone to discuss about it with. It's just such a unique way of telling a story filled with VERY human emotions....through characters who are very much not human (they're rocks). Anyway thanks for spreading the good word og HnK further
ah yes... finally someone is open up to talk and appreciate hnk... I'm in tears rn because of how beautiful the manga was... Especially the main character.... Thank you for being open about this topic, I will forever be in your dept...
The reason why the gems are almost indistinguishable is i think very "artistic" FIRST of all, the gems are all the same. They are very symmetrical, they dress the same, they do the same things, they all love sensei, and most importantly they all think similarly. Their ideas are very much just "this is how I and everyone thinks and there is no reason to think otherwise". BUT the gems become very "different" when they are showing who they are. When they show their individuality the author purposefully draws them in such a way that you can say "ah this gem is definitely amethyst", or "ah this gem is ghost". BUT when the gems are just there standing as part of a scene or the background, when their dialogue is not necessarily important and any one of the gems could've said it, its really hard to tell who it is, because it could've been any gem and the scene wouldve been the same. When their ideas are so different from the rest, and when their individuality is so bright, like Bort who is probably the only battle maniac in the group, the author gives them a trait that makes them stand out, you cannot mistake Bort for anyone else in any scene. Phos starts off as a character thats quite hard to distinguish from the rest, but she starts thinking differently, and you notice her standing a little off to the side, starting to have changes in her appearance, and until finally she is just so different from everyone else that she just looks off...
Dude Now Finally I mean This manga got really famous in 2017 when the anime competed against Made in abyss for Best anime of the year. This has true artistic value, one of those Seinen that challenge what traditional manga is.
Aechmea is one of my favorite antagonist and characters probably ever. I dropped it multiple times but as soon as he came into play the story picked up fantastically
ive been a fan of this series since 2019.. and Its emotionally tramatized me ngl.. 💀💀 Its one of my favourites! I just hope when it eventually adds, its not all bitter..
When I first read Hnk I thought it so darn weird, like the weirdest ever and I feel so strongly about it despite not fully understanding it. After some time pondering and re reading and reading analysations, I finally put my mindset in the story and look a bit through the lens of Phos and it wasn't about the weirdness anymore. It was a horribly lonely, empty world. Like the only path you have is the one everyone's pointing at and desperately crawling at. And Phos just went to break through everything for the chance of an actual choice.
TLDR: Give Land of the lustrous' anime a go! You'll defo like the manga if you like the anime💪 I ended up getting really rambly...sorry;;;; it is a manga I genuinely love so so much I'm new to your channel and super ecstatic that you covered HNK! ♡ This is my favourite series ever, but even I will admit it isn't everyone's cup of tea 😔 Honestly, even though the manga is banging, I would actually recommend starting with the anime Just from episode one, you will know if it's for you Done by Studio Orange (they also animated Beastars), I truly believe the anime is a perfect if not superior adaptation of the series 💪 On TOHO animation's YT channel they have fantastic 10-20 sec animation spotlights and trailers which you can check out! The problem with identifying with characters is nonexistent in the anime and the fight scenes are a lot more structured and dynamic, the show just bleeds passion and hard work hehe The series gets quite dark and twisted as you mentioned so best to go in with caution! I'll stop myself here but Padparadscha is the bestest character, thank you for coming to my TedTalk 🙇
Same dude, the anime adaptation was such a banger ngl,and the opening theme is just sooo vibe while the ending was a mood, the CG animation is very pretty and the voice actors are just very good,it is just too unfortunate that it didn't hit the success button
Land of the Lustrous is really awesome, this manga made me cry which few stories. It's a hard lesson that change isn't always a good thing and that "the road to hell is paved with good intentions"
Small Manga spoilers? Kind of? Phos might be the only and first character I honestly and whole heartedly wish to die. Not because I hate them, but because death seems like a better option than whatever they're going through at the moment. Like I have no idea how they're gonna fix any of the shit. I have no idea how Phos could ever get happy again. They're that much of a tragic character.
Exactly, and another spoiler she literally gets left all alone on Earth to exist as a "human" forever. No other gems, not even the moon people or the jellyfish. Just her, alone.
Just a heads-up, if some of you still can’t understand, all the gem characters are all genderless. Ichikawa (author of Land of the Lustrous) confirms this. There are articles somewhere that states and go into further detail of why. You can also find Ichikawa’s interviews (that are translated).
Yup to add on scanlations may use male pronouns but official translation actually sticks to the genderless route as per request by Ichikawa herself. In multiple languages even
@@anonymoususer9197 this--really irked that people still use she/her or he/him pronouns on them when Ichikawa has stated that they are genderless and use gender neutral/agender pronouns.
@@go5653 yeah i have the German translation and they use a relatively new pronoun since we don't really have gender neutral pronouns. It's not that hard to get used to it since that add bonus pages where they explain the pronoun and which form is used in which context. It's honestly really cool i got to learn something new by just buying that manga lol.
@@go5653 i know that it depends on the language. From what I've seen the English translation almost dodges pronouns entirely and goes with very neutral language like "that gem/that kid/this one" etc. But the English language has the advantage that they have they as a pronoun for a very long time so in dire times they use they. German, however is a very gendered language where even objects have gendered pronouns. There is a neutral pronoun but the rules are very weird. Gem in German has male articles and pronouns so they were not able to translate it like they did in the English version so they stuck to neo-pronouns. The official Japanese version uses male pronouns juxtaposed with the very feminine designs deliberately because japanese, from what I've understood, also doesn't really have neutral language. So Ichikawa specifically requested for other translations to not use male pronouns. Many people confuse it because fan translations obviously stuck very close to the original language. So people either use the Japanese pronouns or base the gender off of the designs.
Thanks for not using any pronouns when talking about the ‘femboy gems’ lmao. I love it when people respect that the creator made the characters genderless in both writing and design. New fans are usually the ones who assume they’re girls even though in the manga, they all use masculine pronouns and descriptions via relationships.
I watched the anime adaptation back in 2018. Last year I picked up the manga after rewatching it. I went from Chapter 33 to 95 and stayed up until 5am. This title is amazing.
I watched the anime adaptation way back in 2018 when Super Eyepatch Wolf discussed it in his favorite things of 2017. I liked it, and thought it went to interesting places with Phos in particular, but not enough to follow the story afterwards. With these words of encouragement, I just might pick up the manga and dive back in and see what's up
Land of the lustrous was my first manga. I read it in black and white, probably not the best choice, but the emotional impact it left me with can't be compared. I went outside that day after I finished it and just blankly stared at the sky for a bit because I couldn't process that I was back in reality HAHA
As someone that's been reading this since I was still in high school in 2016-- PLEASE GIVE THIS MANGA A CHANCE!!! From the story to the absolutely gorgeous art, you'll find something in it to love. Take my like, funny youtube man! Also, if any fellow Houseki no Kuni enjoyers are reading this-- if you liked the art style a lot, then try out Majo no Shinzou! It's a manga about a little girl called Mika that was cursed with immortality and is known as a witch that wanders the earth to fulfill her goal, like a living fairytale. And she travels the world on an unending journey with her sentient lamp, Lumiel! It's a very very pretty manga that has *some* artistic similarities. It's a bittersweet manga and has some gore and difficult topics, but don't worry it isn't a completely sad story, I'd say.
I just read it and came to see if there were reviews of it. That manga honestly had me in my feels. Phos is one of the greatest protagonists in manga. I heard praise of him on twitter but I never would've predicted what happened with his character. I need a new chapter.
I hope the author one day gets the inspo to finish the story simply so that the anime adaption can continue. The manga is absolutely gorgeous to me but I know it can be hard to follow. Although we all know the real reason why she’s on hiatus… we should have known it was over after reading the authors note about snagging a PS5 🤧
Now this is a manga I won't forget for at least 10,000 years.

@@oscxrv8621 Watch Aria and Natsume's Book of Friends when you finish if you want more night time material when you finish
This series is as beautiful in visuals in both manga and anime, and it has done something that very few media properties have managed to do:
It frightened me.
I won't say much else, but the later stages of Phos' journey are legitimately terrifying to think about. "Nightmarish" doesn't quite describe it.
Finally. My favourite manga. Literally had tears in my eyes reading some of those chapters
I CANNOT BELIEVE SOMEONE IS TALKING ABOUT THIS ITS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MANGA I LOVE YOU
I really hope we eventually get a 2nd season to the anime. I've had the manga on my list for a while but I just never got to it.
I'm so glad Land of the Lustrous is getting more attention from the community. I finished the manga back and December and it's one of my all time favorites. I hope Orange comes back for S2!
I've been waiting for this video. The most underrated manga.
Definitely not underrated lol
more overlooked due to the designs
I recommending y'all to also watch the anime, the only 3D anime that's completely worth to watch and not disappointing at all (they mix with 2D too).
Hi
A few days ago I finished the Manga! I fell in love with it... Proud to have all the volumes in my bookshelf now🌻
I adore writing essays about land of the lustrous, the fandom has just enough video essays to point me in the right direction of what to analyse and focus on but not so much that there's no work on my part, for every video essay i watched on this anime i have created one that no one has made before through my own connections and want for more content
I trusted Ichikawa (the author) to have ever detail be important and i am rewarded every time with some analysis work i am very very proud of, like a theory that cinnabar foresaw the rest of the series from chapter 10 onwards, how the story is a Shonen turned classic tragedy through it's Buddhist ideology , cinnabar's completely unappreciated character arc. And i haven't even tried looking into Dia and Bortz character growth yet
I’ve seen the anime and told myself that if the manga finishes before S2 comes out I’ll binge it
N 📸📸📸🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
You should read it then cuz the story is pretty much over. Its on a hiatus but its also a perfect place for the story to end imo.
I thought it was finished cuz of how the recent chapter ended
See you in 10000 years
Lesss goooo. The Insta GC made you read HNK 🐐
🤬🤬🤬📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸📸
Just finished it a few days ago...all I can say is the final arc was the best, season 2 when, and 🔥🔥🔥.
Your weird recommendations haven't stopped me yet and I've watched it and that expirence was top tier
Houseki No Kuni is one of my favourite mangas I have ever read!
Finally me favorite gem of a series gets some more appreciation 😃
"It's about moon people..." OK I'm sold!
The hiatus is killing me, manga is so good though
ah yes... finally someone is open up to talk and appreciate hnk... I'm in tears rn because of how beautiful the manga was... Especially the main character.... Thank you for being open about this topic, I will forever be in your dept...
Land of the Lustrous is really underrated
its nice to see it get some recognition
rock femboys is way too accurate of a description
YOU GAVE IT A SECOND CHANCE YESSSSS THANK YOU
Glad to see people finally putting some respect on this manga.
The reason why the gems are almost indistinguishable is i think very "artistic"
FIRST of all, the gems are all the same.
I'm so glad you're talking about this manga, i feel like not many people know it and it's so good
Dude
Now
Finally
I mean
This manga got really famous in 2017 when the anime competed against Made in abyss for Best anime of the year.
This has true artistic value, one of those Seinen that challenge what traditional manga is.
Nice, always glad to see some appreciation for this series! Thanks for the video and keep up the good work!
Aechmea is one of my favorite antagonist and characters probably ever. I dropped it multiple times but as soon as he came into play the story picked up fantastically
Phosphophyllite is my favorite character
same! definitely the best written character i’ve ever seen in literature
ufotable should pick this manga up and animate it tbh
ive been a fan of this series since 2019.. and Its emotionally tramatized me ngl.. 💀💀 Its one of my favourites! I just hope when it eventually adds, its not all bitter..
Feeling sad that Cairngorm didn't got a mention, 2nd best character imo
First discovered the anime and loved it. Glad to see a video on it.
FINALLY some recognition for my favourite manga of all time
I really liked this short to the point style man
0:57 you're right that's the first I've ever heard a plot like that
Read this last month and it instantly became one of my favorites
TLDR: Give Land of the lustrous' anime a go! You'll defo like the manga if you like the anime💪
I ended up getting really rambly...sorry;;;; it is a manga I genuinely love so so much
I'm new to your channel and super ecstatic that you covered HNK! ♡ This is my favourite series ever, but even I will admit it isn't everyone's cup of tea 😔
Honestly, even though the manga is banging, I would actually recommend starting with the anime
Just from episode one, you will know if it's for you
Done by Studio Orange (they also animated Beastars), I truly believe the anime is a perfect if not superior adaptation of the series 💪
On TOHO animation's YT channel they have fantastic 10-20 sec animation spotlights and trailers which you can check out!
The problem with identifying with characters is nonexistent in the anime and the fight scenes are a lot more structured and dynamic, the show just bleeds passion and hard work hehe
The series gets quite dark and twisted as you mentioned so best to go in with caution!
Glad to see you giving it another chance. Originality is paramount in my opinion and this series exudes it in excess.
Land of the Lustrous is really awesome, this manga made me cry which few stories. It's a hard lesson that change isn't always a good thing and that "the road to hell is paved with good intentions"
PHOSSSS!!!!!!.....*proceeds to cry*....
Finally!!!! Masked has read Land of the Lustrous!
When it appeared on your "Dropped List", I was disappointed.
Finally an actual GEM of anime
@@anonymoususer9197 wait seriously?? damn i wish my language had our own translation of the manga now ;-;
@@go5653 i know that it depends on the language.
I remember watching the anime and it made me cry and I still need to get caught up with the manga
Thank you for getting to the point! Subscribed!!
land of the lustrous is my favourite manga of all time so i am really happy to see you recommand this
Weird? WEIRD? IT'S A MASTERPIECE, YOU FOOL!!
HnK appreciation is always welcome. My top 10 manga.
I already planned to get into this series for a long time, the moment I finish D.Gray Man, I will read Houseki next.
Bout time I’ve been fiending for a review
Finally he gave HnK another shot lets go, one of my absolute favorite manga
Please review the manga mentioned below :-
1) Sakamoto Days
2) The Way of the House husband
3) Moriarty the Patriot
4) Biomega
5) No Gun's Life
I watched the anime adaptation back in 2018.
With these words of encouragement, I just might pick up the manga and dive back in and see what's up
one of the goat manga ever !! very very nice very nice
i just finished the latest chapter and holy shit this manga is so freaking good
Land of the lustrous was my first manga. I read it in black and white, probably not the best choice, but the emotional impact it left me with can't be compared. I went outside that day after I finished it and just blankly stared at the sky for a bit because I couldn't process that I was back in reality HAHA
Houseki No Kuni unironically did and went where AOT couldn't finish and deliver and its SO satisfying
I’ve been waiting for this video since you posted on ig about starting hnk
I read this arledy. Thank You for talking about it. This manga have special place in my heart
greatest animanga ever
I have only watch the anime, the CGI is amazing and i want a season 2.
In 10,000 year
awesome series and awesome manga. glad to see masked put it in his list :)
i absolutely love this manga and anime!!
one of my top five manga of all time, phos in my top five MCs! so damn good! so underrated a true masterpiece
FINALLY I HAVE WAITED FOR THIS
As someone that's been reading this since I was still in high school in 2016-- PLEASE GIVE THIS MANGA A CHANCE!!!
I really hope we get a season 2. Even though it's an emotional rollercoaster
I just read it and came to see if there were reviews of it. That manga honestly had me in my feels. Phos is one of the greatest protagonists in manga. I heard praise of him on twitter but I never would've predicted what happened with his character. I need a new chapter.
incredible manga, phos really is peak protagonist, few protag are as good as her
Peak suffering
I hope the author one day gets the inspo to finish the story simply so that the anime adaption can continue. The manga is absolutely gorgeous to me but I know it can be hard to follow.
Although we all know the real reason why she’s on hiatus… we should have known it was over after reading the authors note about snagging a PS5 🤧
