@@TheMaskedMan The allegory in this manga is that the author subtly (or sometimes obviously) portrays the "aliens" as representing "illegal" immigrants and refugees, while the Earthlings represent paranoid white people who fear being "replaced" or "discriminated" by these "aliens" or people who are open to welcoming them. This is clearly anti-immigrant, xenophobic, and Islamophobic rhetoric.
The lack of subtlety literally did not work. People still confused colonizers with immigrants. It’s like calling the Haitian revolutionaries racist because they fought back against their French slave owners.
To be fair here, racist is actually the apt term if we want to be accurate. It’s human society that has mismanaged the use of the word racist, because even with different bodily traits we are all the same human race - speciesist is more so toward animals rather than say sentient species.
I disagree with 1 thing. At 3:53, you say that aliens are presented as "neutral." But from what we see in 1st chapter, we can see 2 things 1. People revere aliens and go out of their way to put them above other humans (ignoring car accident, firing of MC, "aliens Park free" sign, woman apologising instead) 2. Aliens clearly disregard people (at least the ones not close to them), not apologising, ignoring language barriers, hiting and bumping into them. Let's make 1 thing clear because it's the internet: I'm talking about THE MANGA. I'm not drawing parallels to real racism and I'm not excusing real racism (unless we're talking about gyp.. NO! BAD EUROPEAN!)
Yeah, when I first heard about it I thought there was more than just one example of a bad guy alien being the abusive boss. But I'm starting to believe it might either be an amazing satire or is just an edge fest... but I think people shouting on twitter about how it's "mein kamf part two" is way too fucken much
I remember the first time hearing about it on twt😭 fully expected it to be full on kkk n bombs but when i heard about the summary of it, honestly didn’t sound THAT bad
Wild that people will judge the merit of an entire story based solely off of the first fucking chapter. Remember what we all thought Kagurabachi was gonna be like when Chapter 1 dropped? Let the mangaka cook.
I have no clue where this "racist" tag came from. It's anti colonialism. Clear as day, too. Still, I really want to see where the story goes, especially with the braids chick character as she grows or just goes insane.
Because the aliens are portrayed more as immigrants to earth in general And that whole bit about what the deuteragonist said sounded more like copium rather than it actually being " a non-hostile takeover " So it's easy to see why anyone would think that the two characters are rascist, especially when they say that they don't view the above mentioned immigrants as " human " Really, this manga needs more chapters before anything concrete can be said
@@badpiggy4177 I think that's more of your opinion on what the deuteragonist is saying than definitely "copium." The whole idea of the aliens and how they came to earth is presented as a pseudo conspiracy or fantastical mystery element. One that can either make what they say real, go to NHK route of, or have a third thing. Also, to your other comments, the main character is/can be relatable to a down on the luck person and in that way, people can empathize on how life just kinds suck for her. I'd hardly call her an incel, and this anime! (manga) where everyone is practically a murderous cannibal. The point is she sticks out as a kind or morally gray bad person and that inherent intrigue is something to draw people in. And though people probably won't feel the exact same way she does (or at least I hope they don't) they might feel that there's some injustice in the world to relate to or empathize with her, especially because she's said to only be seventeen. In my opinion, it's not really an uphill battle for the story/characters because in one chapter they managed to hit exactly what they were going for, that being a black comedy with opening and questionable themes you're not sure on. A sweeney Todd type story. Though it's understandable to say that the story does read with anti-immigrant themes it's hard to say if that will be completely emigrated with the entire work, as again, it's only one chapter. But to that point, to completely deny the anti-colonist, possibly anti-American influence on Japan after WW2 themes is just ignorant. Maybe the author didn't hit on hard enough. Maybe because of the western or Japanese-viewpoint colored might color it a certain way. But it's clearly there! The aliens might be portrayed as immigrants to earth, but they are also portrayed as being in charge of everything, given the best jobs, being the as higher ups, as the saviors of human society and life. The traditional way of life has changed with advancing technology. The story speaks of their position being similar to British occupation in India or America's influence of Japan. Again, others might view as rightwing talking points on immigrants taking their jobs or other anti-immigrant sentiments and it could be that, but it just feels like a japanese author talking about japanese history with a twist. But we'll just have to see.
@@badpiggy4177to be perfectly honest I don’t really buy the immigration thing right now on the first chapter due to the main dudes backstory. If the legal system IS rigged for the aliens then it is definitely an anti-colonialism message, because through history a regime that favors a certain group of people and marginalize the rest at their leisure is a pretty present method through colonial history (from ancient to neo colonialism). I feel like if it was an anti immigration story it would be more on the face in terms of how it affects society; instead of having an alien boss the main girl would have alien co-workers harassing her and “taking jobs”, instead of having a court system that favors them the aliens would tear down at the cultural values of x and y and replace them with alien values, that sort of thing that anti immigration media tends to spiel. Though again, I’m talking about the 1st chapter, we really have no idea where the story will go and we gotta wait and see
In the real world, if random ass aliens came to Earth and just started living among us there would definitely be people that'd hate them and that's without question. Tobirama is a way bigger racist than she is but that dude is a lot of people's favourite character in Naruto.

The "culture war" is in places such as gaming and movies this however comes from a complaint with a bunch of people that think that the story is one thing when we have no idea what the story is in general because only one chapter came out.
I heard about this a month ago, I just saw it as a really interesting take on the usual "Earth after being taken over by aliens" setting. Nothing more, nothing less.
Good vid. I generally think it's pretty dumb for people to either go out of their way to defend or rage against the manga right now. There is just not enough information to know how they're going to handle the themes. It could be horrendous, or it could be fine, and anyone acting hollier-than-thou calling people out for "hating the manga" or "enjoying the manga" are equally braindead.
People say they want realistic characters, but they actually don't. Every real person has flaws, eveybody is biased and holds some sort of prejudice (some more justified than others), so you can't make a realistic character without flaws. And you dont have to hate a character because they are flawed either.
The author has the opportunity to make the characters do a face heel turn, or make them villain protagonists like Light Yagami. Either way, I'd imagine there is a chapter where we get to understand what the aliens are saying and whether or not they truly saved the planet is an interesting plot point
Feel like its trying to be satire without understand WHY people hold the view its attempting to mock. Might be wrong but either way its yet another non-trovercy.

People need to stop saying its racist. The aliens aren't the same species as humans, literally. So it would be speciesist, not racist.
To be fair here, racist is actually the apt term if we want to be accurate. It’s human society that has mismanaged the use of the word racist, because even with different bodily traits we are all the same human race - speciesist is more so toward animals rather than say sentient species.

I disagree with 1 thing. At 3:53, you say that aliens are presented as "neutral." But from what we see in 1st chapter, we can see 2 things
1. People revere aliens and go out of their way to put them above other humans (ignoring car accident, firing of MC, "aliens Park free" sign, woman apologising instead)

I have no clue where this "racist" tag came from. It's anti colonialism. Clear as day, too.
Still, I really want to see where the story goes, especially with the braids chick character as she grows or just goes insane.
Because the aliens are portrayed more as immigrants to earth in general
And that whole bit about what the deuteragonist said sounded more like copium rather than it actually being " a non-hostile takeover "
So it's easy to see why anyone would think that the two characters are rascist, especially when they say that they don't view the above mentioned immigrants as " human "
Really, this manga needs more chapters before anything concrete can be said
@@badpiggy4177 I think that's more of your opinion on what the deuteragonist is saying than definitely "copium." The whole idea of the aliens and how they came to earth is presented as a pseudo conspiracy or fantastical mystery element.
