6 farmworkers fired amid hot temps, multiple California state agencies now investigating retaliation

- Farmworkers are responsible for feeding much of the country. For many, it's a job they've adapted to even in the summer heat. But toiling in triple-digit temperatures is a dangerous job. Jorge Santana, who's been working in California fields for years, says that contractors usually send their crews home when it gets too hot. But on June 6, during a job with Ruiz Farm Labor, he says, that didn't happen.

Welcome to America. This is nothing new. It's sad but true
Lazy Americans
Slaves are not paid. They had a choice work or leave just like you do.
You're crazy they have a choice
@@jeannietimberger2556 Crazy, how quickly people are to label on social media. Migrant workers work at the jobs they do because they are generational laborers. And you should be thankful they do, as you don't sound like the sort of person that would have the stamina to pick your own. Choice? Not if you want to feed your family. Wake up princess.
I hope justice is served. Thea employees did the right thing. I’m glad they had the courage to speak up and take action. As a superintendent myself I will always do what’s right for my workers even if it will cost me my job. I hope all these other trades and professions do the same thing for there valued employees
The construction workers also work under the same conditions. While leaving Las Vegas it was 109 and they were fiercely working on the Highway the temperature was extremely hot.
True…didn’t think about that.
And yet they make more hourly than farm workers. 🤫
And it’s been 114 in California this year. We’ve been in triple digits for weeks. What matters is those highway workers won’t get fired if they start feeling heat exhaustion and need to go home early. I haven’t heard of any of them dying on the job of heat exhaustion either. Both jobs are commendable but the point of this story is that they shouldn’t have been fired for knowing their limits in this heat.
These people who are working the fields absolutely should not be out there in this extreme heat without strict safety standards
Shouldn’t be over here period I’m sure most don’t have a green card

OSHA should put these employers out of business and force them to sell they're fields for putting the lives of humble workers in jeopardy
They republicans and the Supreme Court are working together to get rid of OSHA
Heat and HOURS on the field is no joke. The employer should go out and do it themselves if they think it's easy.
The growers need these farm laborers for their profits yet when they are in serious harms way they have seen them as nothing but worthless objects. Pure greed at play here. The workers are not irresponsible or lazy they have to value and care for their very lives when in any danger of heat stress. I know it all here because my parents and our family worked in farm labor and in dangerous conditions also. Even when my parents retired because their bodies could no longer tolerate this work they suffered many illnesses before passing away. Respect and compassion for everyone who does this work should not become unreasonable. God bless the growers or companies that do care but what about cases like this one? Hope that the workers find a better employment to make a living as well. God bless you who work always. ❤

In the summers of 1946, 47 and 48 I worked the fields with Braceros in California, no finer group of men existed, they taught me how to live with the heat in a number of ways, some I still utilize. Augusta landscaping company did that to few of us 12 hour shifts in the hot sun no shade or breaks
Keep voting for Abbot, De Santis, and Trump you buffooon.
This heat is in another level
This is just wrong smh not only farm workers are being treated like but warehousimg jobs are the same
Except for in Florida where doing this is not an issue. De Santis got a bill passed that is unreal. "House Bill 433 BANS Florida cities and counties from REQUIRING employers to give their employees water breaks and other protections when temperatures soar. Migrant workers in Pierson already work long days in the heat and now people are saying if municipalities can't get involved to help them, more needs to be done." So if a worker dies in the field because of horrible conditions and no water, oh well the farm is not liable. What the heck is this??? Most of these workers are not illegals (if they are, that is on the farm owner who hires them almost always knowingly, and the farm owner should be held accountable). They are those with green cards who come to the US to work during the growing season and send some money back to their families in Mexico. They pay taxes on their wages and also SS gets taken out of their checks even though they will never get social security. They are hardworking. Some are actually citizens that have done this work through generations. It is backbreaking work under sometimes extreme weather conditions. I doubt seriously many if any white Americans would do this work. A landscaping company I worked in the office for had 2 that would come legally every growing season to put in landscaping. They were hard working and very nice men.
DeSantis only worries about the wealthy, he is disgraceful . Couldn’t care less about the workers.

I work in construction for almost 40 yearn, in the New York ,Long Island and surrounding areas. Been in the extreme heat to the bitter cold. It sucks, especially when you get older. The labor laws for farm workers are ridiculous. They’re still people. If anything they should be protected more.
I bet the owner regrets giving those last paychecks his going cuff up hundreds of thousands now what an idiot !
Justice for them
Its sad how the owner had no regard for human health in hot temperatures. With a good lawyer they could get a good compensation
Unions don't care they couldn't turn to them because the labor was contracted, California requires no explanation when it come to termination, but as a worker I'm required to give two weeks' notice

North Carolina doesn't have specific occupational health or OSHA standards for working in the heat, but employees do have rights to protect themselves from heat exposure:
Safe workplace
Employees have the right to work in an environment that doesn't endanger their health or safety due to extreme heat.
Rest breaks
Employees can request breaks and rest periods to cool down if they feel the heat is too much.
Training and information
Employers must provide employees with adequate training and information about heat-related illnesses and preventive measures.
You have still have rights. California has actual regulations, that should be followed. They are lugged to an open field for hours, in direct sunlight, and they get fired for walking off the field concerned for their safety? You can walk away to take a break. You can come to the conclusion that your health is more important, and they aren't supposed to fire you over it. What are we working people for, to die? Get real. Your company needs to be investigated too. Or you need to exercise your rights.
Wow. South carolina is a state that has a law that is employers do not have to explain why they fired you.
