Looks like the story premise was going to be radically different too. For the 2001 version, it looks as if the aliens returned with a new strategy to turn the Earth Defense Forces against itself and Duke and also making use of a mind-control infestation turning people into zombies. Meanwhile, it's the same old brute force invasion in the 2011 version.
As I've gathered, Doctor Proton was meant to be in the base game, plus some footage I've watched has shown that there was some sort of "Babe Resistance" in the game who had or was trying to acquire a time machine. Whatever the game's plot was, it looks positively nuts and fun, and I love it!

You can see alien tendrils coming out of their necks. It happens to regular civilians, too. Plus, the aliens are already fully functional, or at least the basic assault troopers.

1:13 The sky box looks so good in the 2001 version in comparison to the post processed blurry mess with dull lighting. The 2001 version used pretty low poly models for the background elements. Looks sweet.

Fan are doing just that (albeit very slowly) for the leaked alpha of Core Design’s Tomb Raider 1 10th Anniversary remake (no relation to the Cursed Jason Botta remake from 2007), I’m sure devoted Duke Nukem fans will do the same for the PC King like Tomb Raider fans are the PC Queen. In Duke’s case, it’s a lot easier as not only does it use Unreal Engine 1 instead of TRAE’s more obscure Free Running engine (from Core Design & Rebellion’s parkour game of the same name), but DNF 2001 also both leaked the source code and the level editor.

No I guess its because in unreal engine 1 you have to make the room ( box usually) and put cloudsheets and and lightning in it manually and then define how it rotates if not all - late unreal engines plaeyd a movie instead as skybox and the lightning in 1 gen unrealengines were much easier to work with and did greater - In later because of issues the turned up levellight and then turned down the lights and added sucky distance fog restult it looks bland but meshes looks ok and smooth which i my opinion is what epic wanted - sell a gameengine but sucks with lights
Jari It’s also the menu toggleable post processing effects that makes the view blurry and low res in the video. But even with them off the casinos in the distance look flat and lack shadows and highlights.
The internet archive has a download on it, there’s so much stuff in this 2001 build. We technically have two of them, an august and October, with minimal difference so far, although I’ve only played October. Theres even a blockout to what would become dnf‘s dlc in Area 51 maps and a very early moon map.

They should have shipped two games, not one. Why not release something you have instead of scrapping it? Duke3D was outdated on the technical side too, but no one cared - it was fun and had a nice design. DNF2001 needed maybe 1-2 years to finish it - with a big enough team. I mean they made Duke3D in 2 years. Even Unreal1 took only 4 years to develop.

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I like both versions. The shooting and the fast-paced gameplay is better in the 2001 version, of course and I prefer the more old school gameplay. However I still enjoyed DNF 2011 very much. I hope the modders can use the assets from the 2011 version and finish the 2001 version so we can all enjoy both.
As much as everyone loves to crap all over Duke Nukem Forever, I think at the very least it deserves credit for preserving so many of 2001's locales and environmental interactions.

I actually liked the dnf released game. It was behind the time no doubt, and limiting carried weapons and having recharging health were major missteps, but I had some fun with it. I do wish we got to fight infected edf though.
its interesting to see that a lot of what we got in the final game, was idea wise already present in the 2001 version.. thats why i wonder what the problem was. as far as i know, the 1997 build, was trashed, du to the engine change. they took to look and used the quake 2 engine, which was outdated, that why they made this version and trailered it in 2001.. but after that came year of silence. they then state, that they wanted to make the best shooter ever and that so many good games realsed with neat ideas, that they wanted to implement alot of them, which took time, but what i see here, is that almost everything from the final game, was already there. sure, the terminator salvation christian bale rant wasnt a thing in 2001 and couldnt be there, but this screams to be, that 3drealms had problems. it feels like, they tried to build a mammoth project with only 30 people, that would have taken 200 to be completed in time and every time, 3d realsm reached 50% with the build afters years, the product they had was already outdated because it took so long and thus, had to be redone almost from scratch, but this time, we have 10 new ideas due to games like hl2, halo und cod that we need to implement, which will take even more time.. and so on an so on. like an single person, trying to build a house and realizes midway, that leaving the inside open for 4 years, causes so much damage, that they had to start over
This!! It really is interesting how much common the 2001 and 2011 versions have. When you look at the 2007 teaser there is no hostile EDF soldiers anymore and the classic Duke 3D aliens are back. Also you can see that many of the 3d models that we see there (2007) are the exact same models that is in the final game. So i think that by 2007 the game was pretty much in the shape we got it in 2011. At least by story, level and enemy desing wise.
Duke Nukem Forever 2011 wasn't even a bad game. It was just like popcorn B movie. Rough around the edges,slipping the brain into neutral to coast. It was fun but pretty mindless. Not amazing but not bad either. I fire it up every now and again and still enjoy it. The DLC was actually a lot better than the main game. Comparing the 2001 version, I feel some relief knowing in a sense the 2011 version was pretty faithful to it. I hope one day we get another Duke. Something on the level of Duke Nukem 3D.
I know it's hard pill to swallow, but it's safe to say if they had release this version of the game at 2011 people reaction would have been exactly what it was towards the final version and majority of people would have just downwright hated it. Some people are just too narrow-minded and impossible to be pleased and that's just reality of it.
2001 was the peak of its hype build footage. Duke community & fans were so interest to getting those but then got constantly delayed over & over. By 2006, I assumed the hype train was probably died out. Game build footage had gotten worse & boring compared to the several years before. Expecting it to be delayed and be bad when gearbox took over the build iteration. Then boom! Launched in 2011, totally disaster and turn to be the most disappointing game ever came out in its time for sure.
I can also the the superior lightning in the fist unreal engine used and the inferior or maybe impossible to make any good lightning in later unreal engines -
I don't know who has the rights to duke nukem, but they should take the 2001 version and finish it, and after finishing it make a new version 2023 2024

Cyberpunk turned out decent with some patches, and nobody ever gave a shit about valve's card game to begin with. What Gearbox did to Duke is devastating.
I dunno what the early version would have been but I'm sure they wouldn't take out out of the experience. My main issue with the final game is how unnecessary all the scenes are and shows that there were too many cooks in the kitchen. Such as why would Duke faint multiple times and wake up hours later, the constant dick male and female sucking towards Duke even though there are not a single badass moment in the entire game, Why did they have to have an emotional moment with Duke when they take his twins, see's them die but then moments later he's happy slapping around space titties, the dated and unfunny references like Gears, Halo, Leroy Jenkins, Valve puzzles, Donkey Kong, Modern Warfare. It's like taking the Borderlands dialog and forgetting to make it funny.
I remember that I pirated DNF, and the part with the boobs hanging on a wall of that alien cave made me laugh. I stopped playing when I reached like a fast food level. It was one of those strange cases that I regret spending time playing a "game".

I think you fight the EDF because in this prototype they hadn't programmed the enemy aliens yet
