Shelby should have never asked Ken to slow down and wait for the other GT40's to catch up ....in another documentary carroll said he always regretted that decision...Ken deserved to win the triple crown that year.
The #1 Ford (Miles/Hulme) only caught up to the #2 Ford (McLaren/Amon) after all the Ford entries were ordered to slow down, and Miles ignored the order and kept pushing. This was before the order went out for the Fords to finish together. If the cars were left to race, the #2 Ford would have won comfortably.

1966 and 1968 Ford GT 40, Ferrari 330 P4 and the Porsche 906 Carrrera are to me the most incredible cars ever built... So beautiful and those sounds. ?Nonetheless, thos guys were fools running like that without security. Wonderful pictures though. They belong to legend. Thanks for this sharing ! :-) cheers from France
MrCharlou92 I prefer the LMP1s today, look brilliant and, whilst they don't sound as great their downshifts sound amazing. Coupled that with their physics defying speed and its a car I can't dismiss as one of my favorites.
Don't forget 1969 with the incredible finish between Ickx (Ford GT40) and Hermann (Porsche 908). A nice movie could be done with this other story at Le Mans. Jacky Ickx winner after starting last to fasten seat belt (because of Willy Mairesse accident in 1968 followed by his suicide) 1966 : McLaren-Amon / 1967 : Gurney-AJ Foyt / 1968 : Rodriguez - Bianchi / 1969 : Ickx - Oliver.
Fools? Fools? Surely there is a better description. Fool denotes the uninformed. These guys were hyper-informed, calculated, and took risk with some experience to give them the confidence to push harder. Yes, in hindsight, we are all fools for doing things now which were not long ago widely accepted as healthy. Such is hindsight. But these guy were not fools. Were the Apollo Astronauts fools? Surely more so than these guys. At least if these guys got something wrong they didn’t hurdle through the upper atmosphere towards the earth with their craft on fire and every odd against their survival after flopping into the ocean. So hit the water at 300mph or a wall at 170.
Dave Fesse-Bouc Yes, Ickx walked to his car in protest, buckled up his seat belt properly and was last to start his car and he still won the race quite amazing. They abandoned the traditional running start the year after that.
Very interesting and nice film. Thank you for that. It's a pity they don't tell a word about Ken Miles and Denny Hulme who should have win le Mans 66 if no Ford team requests. After the race, poor Ken Miles said they have stolen his victory ...and he died 2 months later testing the Ford "J" !
At this moment ford just want to do the first eguality on the history of 24h, they didn't want to steal the victory of ken miles. It's the jugmenent of the organisator
@@lakartecim2176 No, it's not exact. Before the end of the race, the ACO (organisator) said to Ford there could not be 2 cars winners but only one, and in case of strict dead heat, the car who made the longest distance will be the winner. So Ford knew that BEFORE THE END OF THE RACE and decided to let the victory to Mclaren-Amon. So Ford is the only responsible.

Rest In Peace to the true winners , Ken Miles and Denny Hulme
