I read Miep's book years ago. She never wanted to tell her story because she didn't want to take away their story to what happened to those that hid the attic. Otto Frank encouraged Miep to tell her story because she was an ordinary person that did an extraordinary thing.
I read Miep’s story last year. It is riveting. She was so incredibly brave. She did everything she could to save Anne and her companions in the annex. She was heartbroken that only Otto survived the Holocaust.
Miep was definitely a hero! My grandad was forced to work in a labour camp and nobody wanted to help hide him. He escaped death a few times and somehow made his way back to the Netherlands
I just finished the show and 1) I'm sobbing 2) this is the best writing and directing I've ever seen in a serie. I hope it gets recognition for how GOOD it is
I just now found this and I will watch the series. I am 63 yrs old. The 1st nonfiction book I ever read was The Diary Of Anne Frank. I have read nothing but nonfiction since and kept up with Miep's life and everything holocaust related. One thing that sticks in my mind, besides every MINUTE of it sticking in my mind, was Miep saying she had saved bits of food, every scrap she could save, every extra bit she could buy, to throw to Anne over the fence. Anne waited 2 weeks to meet Miep at the fence again but when Miep threw the package, another women grabbed it and took off running. She said Anne collapsed, in total defeat. It's about more than I can even think about. My 91 yr old Dad's family are one generation out of Germany. I have no interest in searching our German geneology.
@@peggygibbons479 I think you mix between 2 different people. Miep Gies, the hero of this new series was the woman who helped hiding Anne's family and others in that secret Annex. She is not to be confused with Hanna Goslar who was Anne's friend (about her age). Hanna Goslar did not know when Anne and her family suddenly disappeared when they went hiding. She did not see her for about 2 years until she met her in Bergen-Belzen concentration camp. Because Hanna Goslar was Jewish (like Anne and unlike Miep) she and her family were sent to Bergen-Belzen concentration camp. But unlike the Frank family, Hanna Goslar was moved to a privileged section of the camp because her family had Palestinian passports with them. There she met her friend Anne who was across the fence that separated between the sections of the camp (she could not see her, only hear her voice). Hanna tried to help Anne by throwing food over the fence. There is a different Netflix movie called "My Best Friend Anne Frank" about Hanna Goslar story (from 2021).
This has been one of the best series I have seen..brilliant acting and well written.. it felt so real watching it..yes Anna Frank left behind history in her dairy but miep was a true hero and was able to tell the whole true story ..An incredible women
@@martha7731 should be there. Under the national geographic section or look up A Small Light. I do hope you find it. It's really good. I never understood what the office people were doing until now.
This series is EXCELLENT!!! What a difficult job Miep undertook in helping to hide the Franks and friends. What a terrifying time in history!!! I’m so glad to learn more about Miep herself. And also about Jan. She and Otto really kept Anne alive even after her death. Things that are happening today are frightfully similar. Thank God for Miep’s small light!!❤
We all grew up knowing Miep did so much for this family. But when we grew up and became adults and parents we realized what she actually did and the importance of what she did. She was truly an Amazing selfless person who did her best.
My mum read Miep's book to me and my brother when we were very young (I was maybe 7 or 8), long before I read Anne's diary. It was my first experience hearing about Anne Frank and the Holocaust and the war. The book always stayed with me, and I always remembered Miep's amazing story. I'm looking forward to watching this TV show with my mum.
Thank you for giving Miep Gies and her husband Jan a face in history. The resistence was a small group of ordinary people doing extra ordinary hings.Often they were afraid and brave at the same time. They put their lives on the line,to save the lives of people they mostly even didn t know.My grandfather always said. The people of God are in danger and you than can not sit on your hands(it is a expression in dutch) and do nothing.I am so proud he did and so proud he survived. All these small lights made a difference and brought light in a pitch black world.
What a great series I just finished it tonight. I hope they come out with a season two. Miep was the definition of the saying “not all heroes wear capes”. This woman did not get enough recognition of what she did. Her bravery was out of this world & she was so unbelievably committed to the Franks, the Vanpels & Mr Pfeffer. We all need a Miep Gies in our lives!! God bless her soul.
Sadly, Miep was not "an every woman". And many people did not say "of course, I have to help my friends." If more people had helped their friends and neighbors, maybe the Nazis would not have accomplished everything they were able to. Miep's extraordinary courage enabled us all to bear witness, and continue to do so for decades to come. Maybe she will also encourage more people, who think they are not able to stand up and speak out, to be strong. So it can, and will, never happen again.
I remember going through that book in school. We did "journal entries" from different perspectives and I even did a cheeky one for Peter's cat. It wasn't hard to come up with material since I had read the diary at least twice before that particular school year. I've never read Miep's, I'll have to make a note of that!
Absolutely AMAZING! This is one of the best tv series I’ve seen in years. It’s had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Even though we know the dark ending of what would happen to Otto Frank his girls along with the the rest of the people hidden away in the annex. It still had me glued to the screen! Immediately fell in love with all of the characters all over again the story telling is magnificent and the actors really brought these characters into a new light 💡 Or should I say a small light ❤️ Bravo 👏 5/5
I watched the series and it was amazing! I'm so glad they could capture this story for future generations. We have to remember the bad times so they don't get repeated
Miep was the greatest hero in Dutch history. The Anne Frank house is the most honored monument in my country and it's because of her. It's the best story in the world to show us that we shouldn't take freedom lightly and we should cherish it. We need to help Ukraine anyway we can too in these dark days for them. Let's give them a small light in a dark room.
I watched this series and it was so good and so well written. They brought the characters to life. I love how the story is about everyone else and touches on the Frank family as well.
Miep is interesting character, and I have read an extract of her biography/ autobiography, obviously she did change some aspects in her story ( names) to reflect the names Anne Frank had used in her diary. Which Anne had done, to protect possible the true identity of people.
Absolutely AMAZING! This is one of the best tv series I’ve seen in years. It’s so real...the persons are very good.. Even though we know the dark ending of what would happen to Otto Frank his daughters along with the the rest of the people hidden away in the house. It still had me glued to the screen! Immediately fell in love with all of the characters all over again the story telling is magnificent and the actors really brought these characters into a new light 💡and I hope there will be more in he future I have seen it 4 times now
This series is exceptional. I give it 10 out of 10 I couldn’t imagine none of things that everyone went through. My grandma wasn’t so lucky to find a hiding spot but her family fled and I’m so glad.
She and her late husband Henk also honored The Eight. On the day that WW II ended they lead a very quiet day no visits, calls or friends. Then on August 4th they sit in silence until they hear the Clock striking five. Miep also was presented at The Oscars as the woman who helped hide Anne Frank and the audience gave her a standing ovation.
Incredible story, I've visited the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam and it's very moving. I hope people see that at the end of the day, we all have more in common than we do differences and how important it is to focus on what brings us together rather than apart. Blessings to Miep and the Franks.

The story has to be told over and over and over again so just maybe WHEN history tries to repeat itself, we will all have the courage to do more than being a bystander.
as a Dutch person it makes me soooo uncomfortable to see the story Anglicized and dramatized for modern audiences, but I respect that they did their best and according to these comments made a good show so and I generally like the idea of modernizing stories while keeping similar messaging so I'll live with it ;)
As a hobby historian who's been near obsessed with this since I was a kid, what bothered me even more is the fiction of most of this show. She hid only those 8 people, you'd think that'd be high stakes drama enough, but no, they had to add a million subplots that have no evidence of happening. If she did hide more people, she would have mentioned it in any of her writings. I get creative license but this is absolutely overkill into 'ridiculous' territory.
This reminds me of Dr.Rashid Buttar an immunologist who spoke against the VACCINE TYRANNY during COVID and was sadly poisoned for it. Heroes are rare indeed!! RIP!!
My grandparents from both my parents, lost their entire families to the cruel beasts, murderers the nazi's. May they get their deserved punishments in hell forever! And, Miep and people like her, may they fill up the whole world and bring goodness, kindness to every human being regardless of who they are. Thank you to all the hero's who choose to live with the right choices. Thank you G-d for creating these shining stars in a world that is not always shiny.
She was a "Hero" but she didn't want to create attention to herself. What is so ironic is that the Man who arrested the eight on August 4h 1944 was from Vienna, Austria and that was where Ilsa Schrader returned to in The Sound Of Music. Don't forget The Ten Boom Family and Corrie & her Sister Betsie were sent to Ravensbrouck, and Corrie was the only one who survived.
