    Update: As of May 10th, 2022, the iPod touch has been officially discontinued, marking the official death of the iPod line. I've done a video on it, just a quick retrospective: ua-cam.com/video/JWGuvImahts/v-deo.html

    This incredible art piece you have created documenting such a huge monumental 20 yrs for Apple has brought me so many feelings. I was born in 97, so I grew up right in the middle of the Steve Jobs Era for Apple. As a young tech enthusiast during that time, Apple captivated me and I fell in love immediately. I still remember the day I got my first Apple product and that was the iPod Nano 4th gen. Then exactly 1 yr later I upgrade to the 5th gen with the camera. I couldn’t get enough. There is just something about Apple that continues to captivate me still to this day, and I believe that is the fact that Steve Jobs still lives on throughout every product that is released. Steve was an incredible man, stubborn at times, but incredible. He’s an inspiration to me everyday. I am a huge Apple Fanboy now and an even bigger tech enthusiast and that’s is thanks to Steve. He changed my life. I know I’m rambling again this point, busy I just want to say thank you. You’ve made my heart so happy with this video. Thank you thank you thank you!!

    LOVE the 3rd gen iPod. I got it 18 years ago today for Christmas. I was 17, it was a 10gb model, and cost my mom 299 before tax so needless to say it was the only gift I got. I love that button arrangement. I don't hate any other design but the 3rd gen will always be my favorite. I had the inline remote as well and it was very useful. It had a clip so you could attach it to your shirt or jacket.

      No it’s a failing market with everything you have available in an iPhone there’s really no reason to go back to an iPod With all the innards of an iPhone you have more memory than ever and the quality of the music is just as good if not better now All ipod is now is a niche market for nostalgia unless you’re an audiophile but then you wouldn’t be listening to an iPod you would have a really nice expensive MP3 player with a nice dac system so if they wanted to make an iPod relevant they would need to make a very expensive version with a really nice dac system which again would be a niche market because it would be expensive for just an audio system so it would only be sold to audiophiles

    Since Apple is doing the lossless music thing, iPod definitely could have a big return as the only device that doesn’t require any additional amp or dac to play lossless audio. Add a 1/4”and a 2.5mm jack, better built-in dac and bigger battery, USBC, an iPod Pro is definitely possibly (I’m not an audiophile nor have a pro music player, so I’m likely getting something wrong here).

    • @new1412
      @new1412 2 роки тому +4

      The long time problem here is that the audiophile community is very small and unique.
      Apple already has lossless audio codecs to play on iPod for years (ALAC and AIFF) which both available within the iTunes while you rip the song from the CDs so the problem isn't about the availability of the lossless codec.
      The declining of iPod is due to the fact that mainstream consumers don't want to carry an additional device just for listening to music (which Jobs also predicted correctly back when phones started to have the flash memory and be able to play the music, around 2005 before iPhone). And with present day availability of lossless streaming plus the connectivity speed, the significance of a dedicated music player is on triple down declining.
      I'm not against your idea of iPod Pro but even as an audiophile I won't buy it unless it could be more cost-effective than others in the market or at least not using proprietary program like iTunes.

      @@new1412 I mean, Sony still makes a colossally expensive premium Walkman model these days, and Astell&Kern built their whole product range in that market. (Incidentally they're what used to be iRiver, if that's still a familiar name from way back when). So clearly there's *some* market for this sort of thing, enough to sustain several competing companies in the high price segment. I could totally see Apple getting into this, with perhaps the extra bonus of capitalising on nostalgia for the iPod Classic.

    • @Enigmatism415

      2.5mm jacks are rather niche-a 3.5mm jack would make more sense.

    • @new1412
      @new1412 2 роки тому

      @@jdatlas4668 I mean, yes, there are some market for this sort but, again, the main question here is will Apple be okay for selling, like, 10k annually (if they're lucky)?
      Also A&K and Sony doesn't (afaik) required a proprietary software (like iTunes) or port (Sony used to have but they (kinda) realized so just went along with 3.5mm), on the other hand the iPod culture is dying down due to the limitations from both of them (iTunes, Firewire & 30pin).
      The nostalgia is long gone. The Walkman is still alive due to the demand in Japan is still high (and they're promoting it as a Hi-Res player which sounds so cool when actually it's just a capability to play a 24 bits audio file) and that's all.

    What I have come to realize with tech youtubers is that there are 2 kinds, one from whom you learn a lot, regardless of the subject, and others that ramble a lot but at the end you learn little or nothing... I could feel it but I couldn't tell what was different between them. Recently I understood, the ones from whom you learn a lot are those that know a lot about the history of technology. And you are one of them Josh.... Other youtubers review old tech, some even more often than you, but they don't know half of the stuff you do about history. As someone who is also passionate about the history of tech I can tell you that you videos are very enjoyable....and that's even more amazing coming from someone who has less than half my age....

    The iPod Classic was actually discontinued because some of the parts either didn’t make sense or became logically unobtainable in terms of costs. I think the hard drives, ironically the part key part for their initial existence, for the classic were to be discontinued in production.
    This meant that either the price would rise for Apple to keep buying them from toshiba, or they needed to start production themselfs which both were ridiculous options financially for a market losing product which was well on its way out at this point.

    Really appreciated the time and effort put into this video, very well thought out and very interesting to see the iPods story. Even though the Apple Watch is a fairly new product especially compared to the iPod that you did in this video, I would love to see a long in-depth explainer about the Apple Watch I understand it will definitely take some time to produce. If you see this Josh, thank you for taking the time to read my comment and to consider my consideration for a future video! Keep up the great work as always Josh!

    this is a really awesome video. so thorough. I have so much respect as I know how much editing is involved in making a 2 hour video... so much love & hard work went into this. I'm an iPod lover since 2005 and my 5th Gen Classic is still working to this day. thanks for the heads up about Elite Obsolete!!

    Damn Good. Excellent production. As an iPod fan I really learned quite a bit. I also have hope that they will re-intoduce a new generation of the iPod Classic. Maybe in 2025 when form & function catches up with nostalgia... I appreciate the sacrifice in time and effort it took to make this film. Well Done!

    Thank you so much for making this video. Growing up and going to middle school and highschool when the ipod and iphone was so huge, and then learning everything this video had to offer, has changed my views on Apple tremendously. I have so much more respect for Steve Jobs. He was a pioneer, he changed the trajectory of life as we know it. Amazing. Thank you 91Tech. Thank you so fucking much.

    I'm still using my iPod 5.5G as my portable music player, because it's great. I modded it with 128GB flash storage and a larger battery. Another reason, why i use this old iPod is my choice of headphones. I use 250 Ohms over ears and most newer portable players and phones have less power on their headphone jack, but the old iPod is able to handle it perfectly.

    I received an blue aluminum iPod Nano for Christmas in high school. The one you were holding in the box. Seeing that box was extremely exciting. I remember thinking the colored iMacs were cool and we used them at my elementary school but we never had a Mac at home. I think my mom was convinced they were more of an education company for a certain amount of time. I think it was the name and the fact that you mostly saw Macs in schools at the time. I went from the Nano then to a larger Classic. After awhile, I got sick of dealing with Windows and picked up my first MacBook, ditched Samsung for iPhone, all when I got to college and earned my own income. I am firmly entrenched in the ecosystem now and haven’t looked back.

    One thing that NO ONE that makes videos like this mention that back in the day, 1000 songs was about less than 5GB. But that was because they based that off of how many megabytes each song was back in those days on iTunes. Songs used to 2-3 megabytes. Now days, when you purchase songs, each song is around 10-12 megabytes each song. So that 5GB today wouldn’t hold a total of 1000 songs anymore unfortunately. And of course it isn’t 5Gb, it’s actually less than that just because they didn’t add the amount the firmware software to compensate for that but I am absolutely sure they can’t even do that today. But yeah, songs are much larger today because of the higher bitrate and quality of them when purchasing from iTunes Store. I now have mostly replaced all my old music with digital purchases from iTunes and they are much larger. This doesn’t matter anymore as everyone is moving towards renting music instead of owning it which sucks ass cheeks but I am so happy that parts for most of these iPods exist especially the 5th-7th generation and you can expand that storage with a micro SD adaptor. One last thing that also changed is that all songs used to be $.99 but now individual songs are $1.29 literally all full albums kept their $9.99 price if you purchase the entire album. I am a long time iTunes and iPod user and Apple Music on my new MacBook Air 💻 is really infuriating to use and really hate that they removed the ease of features that iTunes had for iPods. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro but I refuse to use both for just that although I may have to. I’ll see how it goes. YES!! iPod was the glory days!!! 😞

    I looked around the used market and got myself a First Gen iPod Shuffle (512MB) for $10 from private owner and when I used it, I just forgot how nice it was to listen to just music without the streaming service, having real buttons to skip through songs and use volumes. While smartphones and tablets are the norm, there is still something about pressing real buttons and being cut off from the internet. (yeah even better then offline mode imo)

    I think the legacy of the iPod Touch is still around in the form of the iPhone SE. It at least proved to Apple that there was a market for budget-oriented iOS devices and it’s really nice that we can look back on all of it and see where we are now. Great video Josh!

    The iPod was my gateway into the apple ecosystem without me getting an iPod mini I would have never gotten into Macs and without getting into macs I would’ve never gotten into an iPhone. iPod was such an important product.
