Knowjng what we know about jobs, the fact he held Ives to such high regard is something else. Johnny was literally the second in command because of how much jobs respected him
It's crazy to think where Apple would be right now if Steve was still alive. In 15 years Jony and Steve went from creating the colorful iMac, to the iPod, iPhone & iPad.... It's 13 years since his death, and I can't help but wonder where Apple would be right now had he not passed. Rest in peace, Steve, you're missed.
I’m not so sure. Apple grew more under Tim than under Jobs. Steve was not an easy person to work with. And Apple was always about design, when Steve was there. Tim knew and knows that. It’s part of Apple DNA and they made sure it will never be different no matter who is in command.
Tim Cook destroyed that. So many have of that time have left under Tim Cook. And he has brought in new people who are only interested in making as much money as possible before moving on to another company.
Tim Cook actually fixed Apple in a good way.. I think people make quick opinions about Tim Cook without actually knowing what a big contribution to apple’s rise Tim Cook was.. I think Tim Cook is as important to Apple as Steve jobs was..
@@zeniktorres4320if you had known better of Tim Cook.. he was very reluctant to join Apple despite repeated requests.. Tim Cook was the talk of the town as he was the leading force of IBM before he joined Apple on the request of Steve jobs.. IBM at that time had a larger market and profit cut than Apple.. I guess you can now sense what I’m trying to say?
@@zeniktorres4320 I think Tim did an incredible job considering the shoes he filled and how he has kept apple afloat with the immense competition. Even though apple has lost its creativity, they have had ground breaking products in the watch and earpods also, but the clock is ticking. It takes one revolutionary product to tip the table like they did in 2007.
I do not agree with the assessment of Tim Cook. Apple was cool when jobs came back and they needed to innovate to survive. The “cult of Apple” mentality was right for that time. But Tim Cook was always working behind the scenes to get Apple ready for the next chapter. They may not be as “hip” as they once were, but Apple became the largest company in the world because Tim Cook is an excellent operator. Running a business is not always glamorous even though we got to experience the great products. Sure, some executives come and go and they chase the next payday. But what about the shareholders? I bought Apple stock many years ago because the products were cool. Like it or not, our retirements, including union pensions, are comprised of publicly traded companies. Thanks to Steve, Tim, and Jonny…. Many of us have a secure retirement.
I am Indian and in my mountain village, I never heard about Apple computers 25 years back. When I first moved to the west. I came across this transparent Blue computer called iMac and it was love at first sight. It took me many years to buy one for myself on ebay. Your video brought some happy memories. Very well presented. Thank you so much. Respect
I know how idiotic you were. I know about that Mac in 98 itself, floppy disks and also about Pentium chips. Any person reading news papers, not just browsing pictures, would know about these.
If he had stayed the Apple wheel parody would have become the Macbook Air at some point. His efforts on minimisation, started impacting on the practicality of Apples products and the butterfly keyboard he insisted on to save a few millimetres cost apple a fortune in warranty repairs and compensation to customers. From a practicality point of view, the MacBooks were noticeably getting worse on his watch. I think the problem was that Steve Jobs wasn't around to temper his more extreme ideas.
With Jony not truly parting with Apple until 2022, I've got to believe that he is responsible for the sleek design of the years-long project we now know as Apple Vision Pro. It's so "Ivy-like".
Except the AirPod Max… damn things are way too heavy… brutal. I have used them for years now and I’m still reminded after every use of how heavy they are. Jony would have removed the weight and refined the product. Cook, cooked it.
@@GET2222I think retaining the metal design instead of plastic just to make them nicer - in spite of the obvious downside - is the most Jony Ive part of the AirPods Max.
Creative genius was not what set Apple apart. Good ideas come up all the time. The difference was the willingness to follow through on it. The willingness to do things that were different and take risks... to actually let it out into the wild.
This is the true essence of design. If you don’t bet on it backed by confidence into your vision and follow through it, you will never come close to greatness. All other companies still fall short when it comes to apple‘s focus on details. Because they only speak about good design they do, but only want to take shortcuts with no passion and conviction. Honestly, take a look at the hardware inside every Apple device, even a motherboard has even more aesthetics compared to the appeal of competitive products on the outside.
They took a risk and it paid off But there was also a chance they could have failed. Hence why most companies follow the safe route because it's predictable.
Most companies focus on hard numbers and metrics. Doing X will move revenue by Y. Apple takes a more human-centric approach. Try X and see if we love it, and in turn the users will love it. The money just follows. "Think different"
True. Both of Jony's Apple flops had nice cake that use shit for icing. Steve Jobs had the special power to make sure art+engineering truly come together.
I have always had a passion for design. When I'm out and about I look at something and think why is it designed in a specific way. I love minimalism, beauty and simplicity, but hate clutter. Jony Ive, who used to work for Apple, designed so many iconic products. He is one of the few people in this world I look up to.
Apple is so minimalist and pure that it simply deleted apple chinese factories worker's lives , livelihoods , but also their ability to commit suicide ....So why not delete European history also to fit the exceptionalist narrative ? Seems only right !
Because the only place where an artist can make any impact, is visually, with pens, pencils, brushes, canvas, cardboard, paper, clay and in art. Put four artists in the role of "Ninjas", in real life. Let's see how well they fair.
One special thing about iphones is - they always make your eyes pause even for a second . The phone may be old(eg : a 6s) but they don't look thrasy. Now I know why & how they designed it so well. Thanks for the information.
No they don't. They look old and crappy like another electronic device from the 2000's era. At the time they released they looks fresh and amazing but they look like a crappy old phone.
Remember that you are not a legend if you are considered irreplaceable. You are considered a legend when your name lasts forever, and is honoured by the people that are allowed to replace you. Jony is the best designer for Apple, his vision is still echoing through Apple Park.
While he is a creative genius, he also had a fanatic, unpractical side to him, which seemed to get out of control without steve who was very very practical. Like ditching the magsafe, only usb-c, even just one usb-c for some models, for years on the macbooks, was certainly a very sound optical-design decision, but not at all a practical one. Noticed, how this came back around the time they started part ways with Ive? Imho, Ive and Steve, together, got each other under control. But on his own Ive didn't do much good. imho. Also, his style is copyable, it will go on.
Pretty good at stealing designs, iPhone 4 look that filters through, came from the industrial designer "Shin Nishibori". It's in the >> Samsung Trial Brief.
Jony Ive took Apple to the next level in many ways, but I think he lost the thread in later years, especially on the MacBooks with this obsession for thinness that wound up generating a few years of really frustrating machines with awful keyboards and bodies stripped of functionality/ports. Genius, yes, but everybody has their achilles heel.
Still have old MacIntosh with 9" black 'n' white screen, together with keyboard , 3.5" floppies, and ImageWriter printer, I have purchased in 1988. Occasionally, I turn it on. Still works. Industrial Art it is.
I liked Johnny, but as soon as he left we finally got function over form. I'm loving my Macbook Pro M2 Max 16" that is chunky and with lots of ports. Previously, my Macbooks looked the same for like 10 years and never had enough functional ports and the design stayed...theeee same..... It's like he did 10 minutes of work on each product once every 2 years, shrinking bevels incrementally and taking away something we need. He's gone and I like Apple more now.
@@michaelwoodbodley8099 I'm always a fan of more ports and memory for sure. I feel really happy with my 16" M2 Max though, feels like a really nice amount of power and I/O. But my last M1 Air was really lacking in I/O.
@@SmartByTravel My 2010 MacBook Pro has a 2 TB Samsung SSD that runs circles around your M2 Max, which is probably restricted to a slower 512 GB SSD. It also has a matte screen that doesn't delaminate like the Retina screens. How is that process?
Even though I’ve been a diehard Apple and Macintosh enthusiast and owner because of Steve Jobs’ commitment to excellence and Jonny Ives’ commitment to design-function follows form is just as important as form follows function, I’ve become disenchanted with Tim Cook at the helm, whom I believe has made sales paramount over people and the vision of Jobs and Ives. I believe service has become second to sales. Products become unsupported with too little lapse of time. It has become apparent to me that Apple’s incremental and insignificant changes to products and IOS has blindsided the Apple culture and its followers to believe these are still hurrah moments. I still have my G4. It still works, even though the IOS is very outdated. To me, the design still has that wow effect on me. Hopefully, Apple does not become another Tesla-hype over commitment to excellence, sales over the needs of it’s fan base.
Yep that what happens when you take away creative people. You have money goal focused people in charge of Apple, they could care less about art or anything with deeper meaning
The magic is since long gone. Although the products are still beautiful the level of excitement has drastically gone down. It’s tiny nuances like the handle on a desktop that Made Apple so unique and therefore so exciting. Now it became a race with competition while I believe it used to be a race to excellence, no later what the competition thinks excellence is.
I’m happy with Apple. It’s easy to lose sight of each incremental update but what it is today is way better than years back. Watch iOS history, so much better now. Although I do still run OSX 12 😂
Jobs only vision was to be "inspired" by other people's visions. Well, it worked. And even the other Steve, who was responsible for making Apple great, has forgiven him. And he knew that Jobs screwed him over all the time.
Ive is/was amazing. And I think he went too far. He kept striving for thinner and thinner designs. This forced electronics designers to compromise the quality of their offerings. Once Ive left, Apple returned to making great computers. They've strayed from Ive's ideals slightly (look at the new MacBook Air - no longer the iconic "wedge" design.) There is a point at which form overcomes function. I'm looking forward to what Ives does in the future - and I'm very interested to see who emerges as his proteges.
As an Apple user for a long time i must say i dont think Apple will innovate without Jonny Ive. I think even without Steve Jobs. those two just worked seemlessly together and are a gods gifted team. I honestly hope Steve is proud of what he acheived. and i hope Tim will finally start innovating again becouse we had the same iPhone for 4 years now. i miss Steve and Jonny
I am so surprised that hearing about Jobs death still makes me upset😢. I did not like the guy but he’s passion was remarkable. A real loss. Now we are left with god complex people like Musk and Gates. Not so much care for Ives - he hit the jackpot where he was simply able to do what he liked. Something most decent designers would be able to do given such freedom. Most of them are sadly limited by spreadsheets,, corporate culture, price and other wannabe “designers” including clients - hence most of the design always sucks. Just a perspective from another designer.
@10secondsrule dude, you make some terrible blanket statements in your 'nice' comment. Musk and Gates are utterly contrasting characters at complete odds with each other on how they see humanity and the world. Jony Ives is a brilliant designer that wasn't successful because of mere luck, he clearly had talent and passion from the start and was destined for great things, be at with Apple or another company. Don't be a victim of circumstance.
Wow you just sound resentful and are clearly a very frustrated 'another designer' lol. Maybe what you say about the profession is true but that doesn't detract from any of the extraordinary work done by legends like Jony Ive. I don't care how limited you feel you are, he had the freedom to do what he did because of his gift for design and impressions he made on people. You don't get in that position by pure luck, perhaps thinking like that is why people are 'sadly limited'
"the handle isn't there to carry it". Designers can be so demented and lost in their own heads. I know, I am one. Every person that saw that design said, "nice it has a handle to carry it."
@@sterkriger2572 I get that, but since it's not really designed for the function it implies it's more of a trick than a valid design element, and that bothers me as a designer and consumer. If it LOOKS like a good handle, it should also WORK like one, not just SEEM like one. To me it's a design failure.
@@itsROMPERS... I think people are misinterpreting. The handle works, and it’s pretty strong. It’s just that the idea for a handle didn’t come from a vision of people lugging their desktops around, it came about so that people are compelled to touch it. It working as a handle is secondary, but it does work
This video just made me somewhat emotional. I've always looked up to Steve Jobs since I was a teenager. His views on innovation and quality always astounded me. Now, knowing more about Jony and how he played a vital role on where Apple is today, makes me appreciate the company's beginnings a lot more. Not a complete apple fan, but the story and history from which it first began is what draws me to it. PS. I was a typical teenager who couldnt afford apple products back then, but now as an earning adult, I always pick up apple devices when I opt for quality and simplicity.
That's the guy who removes ports and wanted us to us the butterfly keyboard. He definitely reached the end of practical design. Current Macbook Pro's maybe don't look so beautiful, slim as the older ones but they are practical.
@@kimbapslayer1995 I it went to when it started to influence a lot of other designs... I remember after that translucent, everything started to become translucent... computer stuff like USB docks, scanners, printers, but also househould items. It was a real hype. Fortunately it passed again...
I was a proud owner of one of Ive's first major design contributions to Apple, the original A model iMac in bondi blue. Such a beautiful, elegant computer for the time!
I won't lie... Watching this video was painful for me. Having worked in the Apple ecosystem for 15yrs I was deeply saddened at Steve Jobs passing. I left the Apple ecosystem after Cook clearly changed Apple. I'm filled with nostalgia and a sort of pain in my heart seeing all these images of computers I used in awe and wonder. Sure I've got the latest Samsung flagship, my wife the iPhone flagship .. but they don't bring the same joy as I used to get with my iPhone 3gs in that beautiful cream white. I chose the cream white on my Samsung s23 ultra in memory of Apple & Steve Jobs and the better days of the past. I miss Ive's creativity! I miss Steve Jobs & what he brought to the company. Now Apple is a giant monstrosity that couldn't care less for customers. How times have changed...
Lol you think becoming a giant is easy 😂😂 even Steve jobs said to Tim Cook to run Apple the way he (Tim) wanted and not the way Steve would have wanted 😂😂 atleast learn some history
A lot of companies in the 90s and 2000s came up with a lot of really cool ideas and pushed them to consumers, but many of them just didn't really think things through, or didn't really have the budget to make what could've been a very cool product available.
Jony Ivy is exactly what Apple needed in that period of time. Exactly what Cook was after that period of time. It may come a time again, where Apple needs again someone like Ivy. Thats the cycle of businesses. Its never always the same. For me, Apple did a tremendous job in both periods. I loved the designs from Jobs and Ivy but they became a burden at some point. Cook does a tremendous job driving the company forward. Whats coming next? We will see with the AR/VR stuff.
Apple did a tremendous Job under Jobs …under cook it was lackluster…the VR is what saved his legacy but so much time was wasted on recycling designs and colorful products similar to what apple was when Jobs left the first time.
Tim Cook is a logistics man in Apple originally. He is one of the reasons why more iPhones can be made per year and faster. Obviously his thinking is different from the Steve Jobs era
I think Apple will do fine, but yes there's been an obvious change under Cook, they're far more focused on delivering powerful impressive technology than they were under Jobs and how effective that will be remains to be seen, but Cook has silenced a lot of Apple's biggest critics with the M1 and the M2, Apple can no longer be described as just an underpowered overpriced status symbol
Steve’s first big mistake was bringing Scully in, who almost destroyed Apple. His second was handing the reins over to Tim Cook. Product innovation slowed noticeably and has now all but ceased since Ive left.
I'm still convinced that John is hiding something spectacular. There is no way John is just going to go to oblivion. I disagree and detest that thought. Something is residing in that genius head and it will shock the world. I'm 90 but I'm waiting. John. Tik tok, toik tok
Meh. Ive did immense good, not only for Apple, but for the tech industry generally, raising the standard of quality for consumer electronics, drawing attention to details like materials, simplicity, and organic form. However, he somewhat overstayed his welcome, and his perverse obsession with thinness and minimalism resulted in a significant decline in the quality of Apple products in the late 2010s. It was only after his departure that Apple products began to improve again, retaining the attention to quality and design that Ive brought to the table, but discarding his weird fetish for thinness and total disregard for ergonomics.
When Jobs got ousted from Apple, he got Pixar and NeXT. This shows how you can't keep a genius down. I'm still waiting for Jony to make his move... I'm now more likely to believe that Jony was just a "manager" type, and he might've taken credit for other people's ideas/work.
An extremely interesting video that told me a lot that I did not know. As an ex pat Brit who has lived in New Zealand for the last 20 years, I still feel proud that Johny is a Brit and has achieved so much. I still prefer Windows over Mac computers, but do have an iPhone and Apple Watch both of which I love, so thank you Johny for giving us such cool tech.
Except for gaming, which windows is still on top! There isn’t really a reason why someone who wants to work with a computer in programs, or just wants to watch movies, hear music and surf on the internet wants to use Windows over the Mac imho! 🤷🏽 Mac is in every other aspect than gaming way ahead of windows pc‘s 🤔
@@ApfelSgt strangely enough, since I made my comment six months ago, I bought a MacBook Pro M2 for travelling. It was much lighter, and had much better battery life than a comparable Windows laptop. I can't say that the Mac has not frustrated me at times, but I am getting the hang of it.
@@TrevorDennis100 ofc there are some problems with a mac too! But the build quality and battery life are just amazing! And not only that, for working these „M“ chips are SO POWERFUL! I think there isn’t a option of a windows laptop that is even nearly as thin, light, powerful and has that much battery life! They are miles ahead for just doing normal things or for working with in comparison to windows laptops! 🤷🏽 I was a windows user my whole life, but because i don’t game on the computer anymore but on consoles, i bought the new Mac Book Air 15 inch with the M3, because i need it to work with too, because i am a music producer. That’s when i realised that a Mac is miles ahead in comparison to windows! Not only the performance which blows me away, but also the OS in general and the compatibility that mac os has in comparison! You got a new Usb hardware, regardless if it’s a mouse, a usb interface, a midi keyboard or anything else? You put the Usb in and it simply works INSTANTLY! With windows you have to install drivers for nearly every single device! 💀 Why you have to do that on windows if it‘s not needed on a Mac?! 🤣 And yeah, my god… the Battery life is INCREDIBLE! I never thought that it is possible to got so many hours of working without the need of charging! If you work on a windows laptop with good performance, you get around 1,5-2 hours, when you have a laptop with extremely good battery life you eventually get 2,5 hours, but that’s really the highest that is possible. With my MacBook Air, it has so much performance that i didn’t had one single stutter in my music producing sessions and i could produce easily 7-8 hours without the need of charging! Eventually even longer, that’s nothing but amazing! There are so many things why a mac is better… just for gaming windows is better but that’s it! 🤷🏽 But yeah, i feel you! Since i grew up with windows and never used a mac, i was often frustrated because i simply didn’t knew the OS! But i am getting used to it more and more. And i would say thats not the Fault of apple but my own. I think that’s the same with your frustration? 🤔🤷🏽
Thank you for this video. It was very informative and interesting but also calming and beautiful. They sound like wonderful people, which gives me hope. I study at Newcastle University, I walk through Northumbria every day - I had no idea Jony Ive studied there!
At 03:30 Note the Asahi Pentax Spotmatic SLR camera on the desk. This may well be the nicest SLR camera ever. A nice functional design that feels great in your hands.
I rarely watch videos this long unless it's something instructional, like showing me how to convert My Royal Enfield to belt drive :-) But I've always watched all of yours from day one. You've got me hooked. It's technology we all use and I enjoyed seeing where we came from. I'm excited to see we go. Maybe 10TB smaller phones/devices in our pockets with no screens Bluetoothing to our Neuralinking brains. I wonder what Newsthink will be like then? One thing I do know is that I will be downloading you into my brain 🤣
Hearing about how the i mac was designed to be approachable made me laugh because I distinctly remember being afraid of the i mac when i was a child, something about the mechanical sounds it made and how it had a lady inside of it speaking to me freaked me out
It’s my understanding that he over emphasized thinness on all the products to the point where they were difficult to hold. It also created problems with cooling, the keyboard design of which failed, etc. art over function never works. It may look terrific, but if it’s difficult and very slippery to hole or key elements of it just don’t workwhat’s the point?
Design wins for Apple for me include things like the macsafe power adaptor, which they briefly dropped in 2018 and thankfully brought back with the M1 macbooks; they also put their foot in mouths with a new keys design on the keyboard which they also dropped with the M1 models bring back the original "reliable" mechanisms. I'm glad too that they are starting to move back a bit from the idea that everything needs to be thinner, dare I mention the iPad bendiegate scandal.
great Vid! I remember a lot of the 90s Apple tech. I totally believe Apple will continue to forge the future. Jonny is not the only design genius available to us...
I won't be surprised if Apple goes bankrupt under Tim Cook. His vision for future is very poor. Johnny is absolutely correct Tim Cook focus only on software, service and money. He is not at all interested in innovation. Steve Jobs and Johnny had the passion and that passion made Apple the force to reckon. This is where Tim fails coming with useless products and saying the clich this is best product eva.
Tim Cook is a penny pinching jerk. An accountant. At least for the last three years Apple devices have been boring. They are after the last dollar and that’s it. No more drive for innovation.
Apparently Apple grew very rapidly after Tim Cook became the CEO and not when Jobs was handling Apple.. Dont think that the CEO handles everything.. Apple is controlled by many people.. it’s not a one man’s fancy
@@aceyage Bro money wise Apple is bigger but look at the innovation side. Innovation makes the company stronger in the long run when compared to competitors. Money is a by product. Apple was bigger company in the 80's but in 90's they were bankrupted because then CEO John Sculley was a useless guy who had no vision to innovate he only focused marketing. Tim Cook is same as John. In 1997 Apple became bankrupt and Bill Gates came to rescue pouring millions and Jobs used that millions to innovate latest ground breaking technology what that u see today, back then we had Jobs and Gates. Today if Apple falls no one will be their to save it will have same fate as Nokia. Johnny Ive is a smart man. When he was working for Apple his efforts made Apple into a powerhouse and Apple competitor's wanted a designer like him . Today he stated his own firm and the first client itself is Apple and the advantage part he can even design products for Apple competitors which is slap for Apple. Today his efforts make him grow not Apple. Also if don't believe me just look at where they generate revenue it is mostly from iPhone and services like ex icloud, Apple tv. They got a slap on their face when India, EU, Brazil and US forced them to change Apple lightning charger to USB C which is a big blow because it was one of Apples key money making sector which they can no longer mint. So innovation is the key.
Not knowing this then, apple finally released their newest product after you releasing this video here in Dub Dub and I respect what jony Ive has done with apple in his time and am greatful for his influence with world pivoting products and making them still look good. Some things may not be forever but some are.
Great video! BTW I never knew the "i" stood for Internet until just now (crazy!). I thought it basically just stood for "I" meaning me - the person ... and their connection with the product.
Funny enough, I think Apple is maintaining and doing a great job with their industrial design. Their current hardware is phenomenal from both engineering and design perspective. I'm far happier now with their hardware than they have been in over 10 years. I think Ive created a philosophy for the design team is carried them until today, and should carry them in the foreseeable future. However, there's quality of software and interface design has been steadily declining since Job's passing. There's no longer anyone at Apple to point out when something is sh*t, and make them go back and do it over and over again until it's perfect.
I don't like the new iMacs. They look so ugly from the front. And the new MacBook Pros look fine... until you put one next to a Jony Ive era one. Then it suddenly looks ugly as sin :(
11:18 I get what you are going for with the translucent/transparent products of the 90s, but the Gameboy Color/Pocket was transparent 3 years before the iMac was revealed. 🤫
@@martinspedding4210 wrong, wrong and wrong. Looks like you are still living in 2018 MacBook has a premium unibody aluminum design with rock solid quality without any cheap plastic parts. It’s not a mechanical one and has an even feel all around and sh*ts all over anything windows trackpads.
Now we know who determined that all iphone screens would crack upon contacting anything at the edge. And why the first thing you have to do with an iphone is put it in an enormous rubber case. Well done mate!
I met Steve Jobs when I purchased a large mirror from his across the street neighbor. He pulled up in a beautiful little sports car (Alfa I think?) and stopped in the street to talk to us. I was on my 3rd iMac (Orange) and I felt like this is what he would be like, calm, approachable, friendly and he even offered us fresh lemonade his wife had just made.
Personally, I'm really happy he's gone. The functionality of his designs are in question. The new Macbook Pro's with PORTS, thicker beefier design and enough power to actually comete and BEAT Windows machines would not have been possible with Johnny in charge. Large camera bumps for professional quality video and photos? He never would have allowed the bump but we love this functionality. He puts form over function and his lack of compromise nerfed Apple products for years.
However the new iphones don’t feel as good in the hands with the boxier edges and the paint is susceptible to chipping. Some software is better but not the overall design and experience imo.
I really like Jony Ive. His contributions to Apple were a HUGE part of their success....but NO ONE is irreplaceable. Even Steve Jobs was not. Tim Cook has demonstrated that.
@Kurt M. OK .... let's give Tim Cook another 10 years as CEO as a test.....he only quintupled Apple's market value in those first 10 years..... 2.5 Trillion dollars is just not enough success.
Wrong, they are irreplaceable and Tim Cook has shown that. Cook is just like any other Corporate CEO, Steve was way beyond Cook and Cook has admitted that himself. Tim took the soul out of the company, regardless of the profits. The foundations of what the company was built on has disappeared under Cook. The customer is no longer valued, just profits. Under Steve and Ive it was the customer first. Trust me, the world wouldn’t have mourned the loss of any other Corporate CEO like they did with Steve, he was one of a kind.
Was thinking it had been a while since the last Newsthink video... always a welcome sight in my inbox. Great video. I think in a nutshell an Engineering led company makes great Swiss-Army knives. A Design led company makes the better Butter Knives. Neither is necessarily better but most people don't need a knife that turns into a torque-wrench at the dinner table.
There's a saying, "You don't die until the last person who remembers you dies." This is how I feel about the symbiotic relationship between Jony Ive and Steve Jobs. I should include Wozniak too in this mix but he wasn't around for Jobs middle and late career. Jony Ive was there near the beginning. They had a different kind of tug-of-war of wills and ideas. "Greatness" is an overused word. Jony Ive and Apple had a hundreds of thousands of workers who brought their ideas into fruition, some, like the workers at Foxconn, committed suicide. It doesn't make these workers less important to the story. We unnecessarily valorize Steve Jobs and Jony Ive instead of learn from them. I want to know what's inside Jony Ive's mind. What makes him tick? How does he see the world? How does Jony peel back the layers that is Steve Jobs that we don't know?
No resolution at the end of the voice over script (which hints at either a lack of communication with the VO talent about how to end the script, or a possible edit of the script after the VO had been recorded. Either way it doesn’t land with a finality that is very much desired. Additionally, and maybe this is more evidence that I’m just dealing with inexperience, the last image doesn’t fade to black or do anything to act as a button or bookend. It’s again as though the visual ending was arbitrarily decided and the video just ends with whatever random imagery was being shown at the time of the conclusion of the VO. And just to drive this all home, the music does not end with a conclusion. Anyone who edits, knows that music doesn’t always fit your timeline and even though every song has a conclusion, sometimes you’re unable to get that to line up with your particular edit. This is why you’re supposed to make a musical transition more than 10 seconds before the end of your video, so that the end of the video matches up with the conclusion of the music. This is basic editing 101, and I’m disappointed that such intriguing content (the story of a phenomenal designer) is presented by someone who seems to despise good design. Please work harder next time.
This answers why Apple has lost its way. In the last 5 years, their product has been more static. For the first year since the Smartphone hit the market, I have not upgraded. With Apple, the leaps forward have become tip-toes.
If you ask Google, it will tell you that the iPhone was designed by Jony Ive. A court filing by Samsung, revealed that in 2006 Apple industrial designer "Shin Nishibori", was directed to design an iPhone prototype, inspired by Sony's aesthetics, after Tony Fadell internally circulated an interview with a designer from the company. An assortment of renders reveal his design, complete with a Sony logo - save for one where the logo has been modified to read "Jony," in which Apple's Jony Ive, took credit for someone else design.

Steve would have enjoyed competing with Elon Musk...
I’m not so sure. Apple grew more under Tim than under Jobs. Steve was not an easy person to work with.
And Apple was always about design, when Steve was there. Tim knew and knows that. It’s part of Apple DNA and they made sure it will never be different no matter who is in command.
For sure…Tim Apple had been horrible in comparison
Tim should hire this man back and become more innovative! Case closed.!
Wrong Steve.
The absence of vision and creativity that Steve and Jony only comes once in a lifetime and Apple was blessed. The culture is no more.
It's crazy. His dad taught him "form follows function", but all he remembered was the "form" part.
Well said, Ive got carried away over the years and lost touch with reality.
With Jony not truly parting with Apple until 2022, I've got to believe that he is responsible for the sleek design of the years-long project we now know as Apple Vision Pro. It's so "Ivy-like".
having used one for a little bit now, you're right. Even Steve had early input since patents for some of the AVP date back to 2007
Except the AirPod Max… damn things are way too heavy… brutal. I have used them for years now and I’m still reminded after every use of how heavy they are. Jony would have removed the weight and refined the product.
Cook, cooked it.
Industrial designer "Shin Nishibori", is responsible for that, "Ivy-like" design, that you mention.
The willingness to do things that were different and take risks... to actually let it out into the wild.
true as hell. the company was willing to make profits second to their ingenuity. increasingly rare.
They took a risk and it paid off
But there was also a chance they could have failed.
He is one of the few people in this world I look up to.
hate minimalism. especially in architecture. modern architecture is junk compared to art deco and medieval buildings.

It's amazing that four Italian Renaissance artists were also named after the Ninja Mutant turtles. What a coincidence.

Designers can be so demented and lost in their own heads. I know, I am one.

I thought it was about how the parts in an iphone are irreplaceable.
I have a friend who was once in line behind Steve jobs in the apple cafeteria.
I'm surprised that he would stand in line.
The original iMac was always something I wanted... but my first one was the G4.
Apple under Tim Cook is about 2.5 times bigger and makes 4 times as much per year compared to the last year under Jobs. I think Apple will be fine.
Tim Cook is only interested in his personal fortune, and in the accolades he gets from Wall St and Hollywood.
Rafaello, Leonardo and Donatello were the master minds of Renaissance Art! The Ninja Turtles just borrowed their names. Please correct this 😅
Not knowing this then, apple finally released their newest product after you releasing this video here in Dub Dub and I respect what jony Ive has done with apple in his time and am greatful for his influence with world pivoting products and making them still look good. Some things may not be forever but some are.
Well that last phrase doesn’t apply to Apple lmao instead “some things may not be forever but some these last 5 years”
Great video! BTW I never knew the "i" stood for Internet until just now (crazy!). I thought it basically just stood for "I" meaning me - the person ... and their connection with the product.
Remains relatively unknown?? Everyone knows the iconic Sir Jony Ive 😂
I'm just getting to know about him
I read the book Creative Selection. Great read and big ups to Jony.
i teached roller blading in benicassim during 90s to spanish guy that worked closely with steve..
Then it suddenly looks ugly as sin :(
Apple’s battery sucks
11:18 I get what you are going for with the translucent/transparent products of the 90s, but the Gameboy Color/Pocket was transparent 3 years before the iMac was revealed. 🤫
The wheel from the ipod came from Braun, and their designs
It's like I'm reading a book. Thank you for this documentary.
The bendy iPhone 6, butterfly keyword, and the touch bar are all his work. And I think the MacBook series is better after he's gone
We only remember the bad stuff. It's like this behaviour is embedded in the human DNA.
These are surely his flawed designs. At the end of the day, he is only human
That's the beauty of human beings. otherwise we would all be God and Godesses.
The macbooks are still dreadful design with an appalling keyboard that is badly positioned and an oversized track pad.
@@martinspedding4210 wrong, wrong and wrong. Looks like you are still living in 2018
MacBook has a premium unibody aluminum design with rock solid quality without any cheap plastic parts. There is no parallels
They have also removed the butterfly keyboard and the current one is pretty good and among the top 5 laptop keyboards right now
The trackpad on MacBook has always been and still is the best in class with no one even remotely close. It’s not a mechanical one and has an even feel all around and sh*ts all over anything windows trackpads.
Now we know who determined that all iphone screens would crack upon contacting anything at the edge. And why the first thing you have to do with an iphone is put it in an enormous rubber case. Well done mate!
ok brokie. you're just too poor to own an iphone at that point lmao
@@doloreshaze5111 at what point??? not wanting it to break??
@@technus147 just don’t be clumsy bruv
jony ive helped design the iphone 11 pro and apple have been too anxious to change the design ever since 😂💀
I met Steve Jobs when I purchased a large mirror from his across the street neighbor. He pulled up in a beautiful little sports car (Alfa I think?) and stopped in the street to talk to us. I was on my 3rd iMac (Orange) and I felt like this is what he would be like, calm, approachable, friendly and he even offered us fresh lemonade his wife had just made.
"The Man Who Ate Lunch with Steve Jobs Every Day" the lunch: an apple
Welcome the VisionPro.
I wonder how different it would have been if Johnny was at the helm of that.
@Kurt M. I know…..just look at the future of Windows on x86.
Not true. When Scully fired Apple the company lost $876million with market share halving each year. Jobs handpicked Cook.
Tim Cook is a jerk. He’s leading Apple into oblivion, eventually.
@Kurt M. OK .... let's give Tim Cook another 10 years as CEO as a test.....he only quintupled Apple's market value in those first 10 years.....
The original iPod was a copy of Dieter Rams’ T3 transistor radio from 1958
Was thinking it had been a while since the last Newsthink video... always a welcome sight in my inbox.
Great video. I think in a nutshell an Engineering led company makes great Swiss-Army knives. A Design led company makes the better Butter Knives. Neither is necessarily better but most people don't need a knife that turns into a torque-wrench at the dinner table.
15:18 😢 Literally on tears.. (till the end of the video)
He needs to go back to apple so bad, apple has been so stagnant these past couple of years
There's a saying, "You don't die until the last person who remembers you dies." This is how I feel about the symbiotic relationship between Jony Ive and Steve Jobs.
(17:12) no, without ivy, apple will not produce the beautiful designs we all want to see :)
Thank you for this video. really enjoyed the journey of apple, john and steve.
Concepts that will excite people. Love this
Thank you for the video
