    I have been watching Tony and Chelsea for several years now and looking back, I didn't realize that they never accepted promotional sponsorships, but they have always said what I needed to hear when selecting gear and after buying them, I felt like what they said was right. Just didn't realize this until he pointed it out in this video at the beginning. Thank you, Tony and Chelsea.

      That's not quite right. They take sponsorships all the time. They just don't take sponsorships from camera makers. That's Canon, Sony and the like. They do take sponsorships for camera adjacent fields, like website and used camera stores.

    I had a first generation Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS laying around. I recently paired it to a used $350 Canon T6 and started taking photos of hummingbirds in front of my kitchen window. The results absolutely blew me away. Lesson: it's the lens that counts - although I wish I had faster autofocus 😊.

      You shall buy a newer canon body and their adapter and keep your old lens at first and get better autofocus performance. Or you can pop over to sony land, tamron 70-180 vxd + a7iii/a7IV will do you great.

    Glad you mentioned the D500 with the 200-500. That combo is just south of the Z 9 at a fraction $. The crop eliminates the somewhat soft edges. I moved back to the D500 after frustration with the Z6&7ii’s for birds.

    Best time ever spent, I learned more from this couple then I did with 4 years for my BFA in Photography and Digital Imaging from Ringling School of Art and Design, graduated May 2007. I appreciated everything I did learn beyond photography at this school, it completely reshaped how I see, observe, and imagine a image in context and it’s development, but for actual photography knowledge this couple is the best. I greatly appreciate their efforts and support of every photographer and artist. They should be recommended for an award and recognition for their contributions to Art and Photography.

      I got an RP a couple months ago and absolutely love it, the one and only flaw I have with the camera is the burst speed. 4fps is a challenge for some sports but it hasn’t stopped me from getting some great photos out of it.

      @StatusQuo209 Рік тому +5

      RP is slept on. It's such a great camera that forces you to get good. But when you use it right, the pictures it gives you make it worth it and it's very rewarding.
      I upgraded to a A7IV, but the RP is a great backup.

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx Рік тому +1

      I had the RP for about 2 years, my first and for a while my last full frame camera.
      Yeah, it was great and i enjoyed it for all things i did, especially with RF 50mm 1.8 prime and a 50 and 100mm 2.8 Macro lens, but as soon i was interested more in wildlife and video, i realized HOW BAD the RP can be. The thing which lead me to keeping it for so long... weight and size! Rarely i hated the small and short lasting battery, but mostly i loved how small and light the RP was!
      Im now a happy R7 owner and as much i miss the full frame glory now, more often than not i can take advantage of the crop anyways and also for example the EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM lens is GREAT and super light, even smaller and lighter than a full frame 24-70 F4L, just little bit worse IQ and more disortion in the corners but absolutely worth it (and better in low light than the RP + F4 lens was)
      I dont regret using FF for a while, aswell that im back to APS-C again, in fact some things like astrophotography, super low light, ISO 50.000 video etc im now much more limited with the R7 than i was with the RP but it gives so much more back: sharper images, fast speed, great autofocus for wildlife, 120 fps video, nice 4k60 crop video, very high quality downsampled 4k from 7k, good IBIS even with adapted lenses (as long they are canon, 3rd party with IBIS make sometimes HUGE troubles)

    Very refreshing to hear someone advocate learning how to max out the cell phone before even thinking about a camera. In my travels I have seen too many examples of people purchasing more than they really needed, facing buyer’s remorse. If you start with your cell, you’ll quickly determine what you ‘feel’ you’re missing - and what you should consider if you move forward with a camera decision. I don’t know how many times I have told someone that a good point and shoot is all they need….and to forget shelling out thousands just to post pix on social media. Good job Tony, and thanks for your honesty.

I'm surprised as if I was going to recommend a used camera to anyone to help them get into photography then I'd definitely recommend the Olympus EM-5 mkII as it's weather sealed and takes beautiful pictures. Some of the best portraits I've seen and also taken myself have been taken with Olympus 45mm f1.8. travel lens the 14-150mm. This gear you can pick up for a few hundred pounds / dollars. For wildlife, for $4400 I'd much rather have the Canon R7 + 100-500 L lens. You get more reach, better subject detection, higher framerate, better IBIS than the A7IV, a lighter, smaller lens with great MFD/max magnification if you're also into shooting insects. Only disadvantage would be high ISO performance, but noise is so easy to deal with in post nowdays that it's not a major issue.

I own many apsc and full frame camera with many lenses but that G5X (with its full frame equivalent 24mm f1.8 to 104mm f2.8) is the best compact for me; The camera I can easily bring everywhere and still get good quality photos. Too many comments to see if anybody has already mentioned it, but if on a very tight budget, but willing to learn photography, a used Nikon D90 is a dirt cheap but quite able camera. Paired with second hand, third party, F1,8-f2,8 lenses you will get the results your smartphone just can't give you. Have a much, much better camera nowadays, but still keep it charged and pick it up every once in a while for a random family photo. One of the most underestimated cameras of all time imho.

For general purpose stills/video (not 4K because it has a large crop), such a great value that Canon and Sony still don’t match at this price now. Sensor is still great and IBIS works great, and I find the autofocus sufficient for anything other than maybe professional sports/wildlife. On the subject of learning, I believe you gave short shrift to the Fuji system. They’ve got great lens and a great camera line. For the most part, I don’t see much difference between the image quality. It’s not a that I don’t doubt there are differences, it’s that realistically, I don’t spend that much time obsessing over image quality differences. That may come with time, but even though I said that, I would point out that there are a number of professional photographers use in Fuji equipment. You want to blow a equipment, be my quest. You want to learn the basics of all the variables in realm of photography, Fuji certainly gets one started and provides a depth of exploration that just not possible on other camera systems. Not saying its the only choice.

    Disappointing that you did not mention any of the Nikon mirrorless. While the Canon R5 is better for focusing with wildlife and and better for video (I think), the Nikon Z 7II is excellent for landscapes and general shooting and a lot cheaper with a better selection of telephotos than Canon. Similar situation with the R6 II and Z 6II. Nikon is being written off because because their focus system is not quite up to Canon and Sony. And no, I still use a Canon 6D with EF lenses. The camera has a dumbed-down focus system but I have gotten excellent results. There is no doubt that I would get satisfying images with either Sony, Canon, or Nikon, but I do think you are not giving Nikon a fair shake.

As a backup I use the Panasonic Lumix G9. It is very well laid out, well balanced in the hand and the weight difference between that and full frame is amazing. It is a joy to shoot with and it is my go to camera when walking about and especially hiking. as an amateur photographer who isn't a full time professional but still takes the hobby seriously and does paid photography work, i would sincerely suggest to anyone watching this video to go learn more about lenses. the lens that you use on your camera matters significantly more to what the final image looks like than your camera body does. sadly, cannon is pulling third party lens support from their new RF lens mount. there are still a ton of lower budget lens options that can be adapted onto their mirrorless cameras, but those lenses are older, and worse in nearly every way. by contrast, there is a plethora of sony e-mount and nikon z-mount lenses from third party lensmakers which produce better images for less money, fill niche lens needs, and overall spark competition and provide modern lens options for these systems. this is something cannon cameras are no longer going to have moving forward, and anyone who buys an RF mount camera will be stuck using the lenses and paying the prices that cannon wants them too. which is often hard to stomach given the price to performance ratio of their in-house lenses. :(

    Why no R7 in the sports section? You did some videos touting that one. Considering that raw burst pre-shooting can only use the electronic shutter, and the severe rolling shutter when using the electronic shutter, that pre-shooting feature is only useful in a few cases... once you pan it's all over. But you'll get a little more out of your buffer, at least, it seems? I wish the Sony a1 and a7 line had pre-shooting. (And the R3, R5, R6...) I'm new and lack experience though, still deciding what I want to get. Found you guys a couple weeks ago - great source of information, thank you.

      @kurasoe Рік тому

      @@nafyah_media the R10 does most of the same. Slower electronic shutter but, with the rolling shutter craziness, it may not matter enough for an extra 30% speed. Otherwise they seem pretty similar. I do think there's a decent bit of difference with the R7's buffer. Nothing gigantic but certainly noticeable. I believe there's a slight mp difference too which may help with crop. I need better low light with indoor volleyball but I don't know that I can afford it. Also with the R6, Mk II is coming really soon I believe so might want to wait if you're thinking that and get something a little better or snag used once market adjusts. Even with the R6 upgrade it's still not fantastic. No 2 grand plus camera should be cheaping out on non cfexpress card slots honestly. Smh

    Tony, it all depends, what you'd like todo, nowadays. You can even make landscape photography perfectly with (just) 10 or 12 MP gear, its only that you won't print that big, -huge hereby. But even for an A3 print size, it's perfectly fine, it's all about viewing distance. One usually doesn't rub the nose onto a gallery print on the wall. 🙂 And then, there's still that Adobe ACR "super resolution" feature to upscale the MP, in case it's being needed. Old gear isn't obsolete - but the industry wants to tell you that, because otherwise they don't sell anything new.

I do like The Sony, shot canon for years but Sony was leaps ahead in mirrorless ( still are really ) and canon switched to the Rf lens when they released the R and RP so mirrorless meant replacing the glass either way.
