OP thanks for making this documentary it was incredibly informative. TIL Iran and Iraq did have aerial refueling after all, for a long time thought only NATO and Russia did it. Iran Iraq war is impressing me as very much a shoe-string war after a certain time! Not even nations flush with OPEC cash can keep a war going on all burners for long. This war was a long series of start-stop actions and rare offensives, combined with long periods of inactivity. Considering Saddam's extremely limited objectives (he wanted the Shatt Al Arab waterway from Iran) the amount of firepower and lives expended over 8 years, is completely out of proportion to anything Saddam might have realistically hoped to achieve. “Iraq was responsible for about two-thirds of attacks on ships during the war.” Yet the US presented this as though Iran was the threat to Gulf shipping. The Iraqi army was the fourth army in the world, a striking force on land, sea and air. Its leaders and officers of the former army were veterans and trained, but assassinations and prisons destroyed the former army.
Ha! Thanks for the history, Showtime! Around November 2006, I was in the Gulf of Oman waiting to get discharged after my 6 year Navy enlistment. Got out in Subic Bay, early 1987 on the way back home. Missile damages ship in 1981. Narrator "This was the first successful use of the Exocet missile, but it remained unknown to the public for the next 15 years." You mean the incident remained unknown? Or the missile remained unknown? Because by May of 1982, everyone on the planet (with the possible exception of a tribe of 23 primitives in the middle of a jungle in New Guinea) had heard enough about the Exocet to last a lifetime.
Of course I mean the incident remained unknown. I never thought someone might understand that I was suggesting Exocet missile remained unknown to the public until mid 1990s.

@@showtime112 there are several examples. I give one. Indian air force provided reckage of GE engine and AM air to air missile, also, provided radar images of F16 to prove that f16 was shot down. On the otherhand, pakistan first said that two pilots have been captured. Later he denied and changed its statement and said that only one pilot was captured and that was indian and no f16 was shot down. It was against US reputation that a Russian fighter shot a US fighter, so he also gave statement that number all f16s given to pakistan were the same, none short.
@@RajeevSingh-kq8flYou know, there's a whole bunch of Indians and Pakistanis who think I'm biased to the other side. I stopped worrying about that. The conflict is not truly over and everybody must agree with them 100 percent, whoever doesn't - he is the enemy. I can relate to that kind of thinking because I've experienced it a long time ago.
What is being biased? After an incident, both sides give official statements. Also, many times there are reliable evidences to support the statements. Now biased means, if the fact and evidence are there. Sometimes, news is propagated based on facts and evidences ignoring official statements. @@showtime112 oh ok will check those videos i do not have much info related to iran iraq war and it's dynamics should be interesting to watch more about this conflict. i never expected iraqi airforce so active in this conflict, all i know was irani F14 tomcats were much superior than iraqi airforce fighters and there was no match but this video shed new lights how they were handling the situation, i guess they were the real threat to irani's on sea

Iraq before the end of the iran-iraq war, had a mig 29, mig 27, and mig 25, in addition to the mirage, mig 23, mig 21, su 22, and su 25! They ware effective and decisive against the iranians before the war stopped!
Thanks
Thank you for watching!
you should do a video on the Albania-Yugoslav aircraft incident (1967) or Air battle over Merklín
I'll write it down for a list of possible topics, thanks!

Great video. I remember the hit of the USA frigate Stark by Exocet launched from an iraqi F-1 in 1987. Iraq claimed it was accident.
Thanks! I believe it was an incident.

Thanks, I appreciate your positive feedback!
Informative but stop with the horrible music. It's not necessary.
As I replied to another similar comment, It's not what I listen to at home but I think it works more than fine here.

Precisamos de vídeos em português! Sucesso!
Thank you for the feedback! I actually studied Brazilian Portuguese for a while but I don't have enough knowledge to do a proper translation. But if someone volunteers to create subtitles, I will be happy to include them.
Was wondering if they would extend me under a war powers thing because the US attacked Iran. USS Stark got hit in 1987 doing a similar role as my ship, USS Leahy, I felt for the crew.
Thank you for sharing your experience.

In this mission, they were passing the airspace of United Arab Emirates and also Oman.

Great video . . . . buuuuut . . . The music is awful!!!!
It's not what I usually listen to but classic rock really wouldn't work here 😁
2x400kg dumb bombs?
Not exactly shock 'n' awe.
This explains why Houthis keep shooting missiles at ships and why Iran doubled down on anti-ship missiles. They really learned from this war and copied some of Iraq's own tactics.

what else : you are right about the low Altitude all the way to the target but never entered the airspace of Saudi Arabia or the Emirates ,The mission of the MIG 25 plane is to be bait for F-14 planes Which monitors the Gulf @@showtime112
Missile damages ship in 1981.
Narrator "This was the first successful use of the Exocet missile, but it remained unknown to the public for the next 15 years."
You mean the incident remained unknown? Or the missile remained unknown?
Because by May of 1982, everyone on the planet (with the possible exception of a tribe of 23 primitives in the middle of a jungle in New Guinea) had heard enough about the Exocet to last a lifetime.
Of course I mean the incident remained unknown. I never thought someone might understand that I was suggesting Exocet missile remained unknown to the public until mid 1990s.
the interesting part is that those F-1's belong to Iranian air force.
Iran didn't have the F-1 and they fly Iraqi flags. I don't understand that comment.
During Desert Storm, a bunch of these Mirages were flown to Iran where they were kept and operated by the IRIAF.

That is derided by all true aviation professionals as being pure bullshit propaganda by Iran, and something that nobody else on the planet other than Iranians would be gullible enough to believe.

I have watched many episodes of yours. Initially I thought you were right.
But you r like BBC, selective.
Really? So, who am I selecting here?
