“What do you Want, Paul?” song is a play on the traditional, ‘I Want Song’ where the protagonist sings about their goals, but Paul doesn’t have any. Just another thing making him an unlikely protagonist.
Yes, I was gonna comment about that too. It’s one of my favorite things about this musical!
There are so many musical theatre references and I love it!
Well he does, he just doesn’t admit it yet.
Jeff Blim is half Jim Carey, half Jack Nicholson, and he is terrifying 😅
TTO was peak both of these for Jeff
That’s the best description for him I’ve ever heard, I mean in this as Sam he tells Charlotte “I’m hurting real bad, I need a doctor”, that’s from the shining and I love it!!
Who else saw StarKid at the London Palladium on Sunday? They were fab!
Yes! Saw the Matinee, it was unbelievable
I did! They were incredible!
Oh no! XD I talk about it 'happening soon' in this video! XD Hope you had a great time!!
I did too, flew to the UK for it! Seeing the queues coming out of the tube entrance was a sight to behold
YESSS I DID i was at the evening show it was amazing!!!! well worth the money and travel and 14 years of waiting and being sick for at least 2 days after (/gen)🤎🤎
Jim‘s last show with Starkid was Twisted (then also did the Homecoming concert).
Dylan was on a break from Starkid after Twisted. He returned in Black Friday (you‘ll be able to hear the excited screams from the audience, welcoming him back)
I love this musical. I hope you include the very, very end.
Thanks for the heads up! I'll be sure to watch to the bitter end! XD
Have you seen Twisted?
Yes! :) You can find it in my Team Starkid playlist! :)
Woo! More Starkid!
My God, he didn’t think about the implications of stopping the video before that joke could payoff. Lol, great reaction veggie!
"The Man Who's Scared of Musicals" is pretty apt too tbf 😂
New Cast members: Jon Matteson as Paul and Mariah Rose Faith Casillas as greenpeace Girl etc.
SO EXCITED FOR THIS
Veggie: "I think the humor might be....cleaner?"
Me, an intellectual: *humming What Do You Want, Paul*
Seriously, watching this was such a blast! A few little notes, and answers to some questions:
- Jon Matteson is the name of the guy playing Paul, and this was his first show with Starkid, although he will become a regular in future Hatchetfield productions!
- Mariah Rose Faith is the name of the woman playing Zoey/Melissa/Greenpeace Girl, and this was her first show with Starkid as well! You'll see her again in some future productions too, especially if you decide to watch Nightmare Time!
- After they finished the Potter Trilogy, they started doing their shows in small theaters, because they're cheaper to rent out. Especially for a show like this one, which was funded on kickstarter, they wanted to do a longer run in a smaller theater, so naturally the audience is smaller. In the last few years they've started using bigger theaters again, though.
There are currently six entries in the Hatchetfield series, of which this is the first. The two other musicals are Black Friday and Nerdy Prudes Must Die, then there's two seasons of a show called Nightmare Time, which is a series of Hatchetfield anthology stories produced over the course of the pandemic, and then there's a recently released shortfilm called Workin' Boys, which is a silly little spinoff. I personally would love to see you react to all of this eventually, but the order is (of course) up to you!
This was such a fun video, and I can't wait to see your thoughts on the rest of the show. Keep up the great work! :D
He definitely just signed himself up for one massive Courage the Cowardly Dog/South Park esc rabbit hole journey of a total mindf&$# if he continues to watch the Hatchetfield series.
*Mariah Rose Faith Casillas now 😉
There's also the other Nightmare Time story separate from seasons 1 and 2..
Yeah, they might’ve actually gotten worse since time went on, NPMD is a very dirty show
Someone may have already mentioned it, but just an FYI, between Black Friday and Nerdy Prudes Must Die there is Nightmare Time and Nightmare Time 2. They were web series done over like Zoom that told more Hatchetfield stories. You don't NEED to watch them before watching Nerdy Prudes, but they do introduce some characters and give background lore that sppears in NPMD. Seeing those will help appreciate and catch some things in Nerdy Prudes. Just a suggestion.
Yes u dont need to but it makes the PAYOFF of the last musical so much more worth it
Also Workin Boys
22:22 Not VG writing down Alexa with the other character names! Amazing! 😂
Please watch through the cast bows at the end when you get to it... so many reactors skip that, and it's arguably one of the best parts!
What I love is that when Joey mimicks Borat and says "my wife" when talking about Lauren's character, Joey and Lauren are actually married in real life so its basically a real life reference inside a pop culture reference.
except Ted doesn't think Emma's the latte hottie haha. he thinks Emma's the crabby one
@@georges1991 NTM that they were only Engaged at this point IIRC
You talked about seeing spies are forever in this vid (the spy one that’s in association with starkid) and I just have to say YES DO THAT!! And also, there are a lot of projects by companies such as shipwrecked and the tin can bros that would have a lot of familiar faces if you decided to check out (they are reeeeally good, spanning from stage plays and musicals to web miniseries)
if by "christmas electricity" you mean the ghost of christmas present, that was james tolbert. corey dorris (playing bill here) you may remember the most as yaxley in a very potter sequel. corey also played scrooge's nephew fred in vhs christmas carol
Don't think too much about the way the three musicals are linked, they can all be enjoyed separately. Watching them in order ony allows you to catch fun private jokes and easter eggs.
8:12 that guy is Robert Manion. A now ex member of starkid after admitting to sexually harassing a member of their band in 2021. All his roles have since been recast.
You'll remember him from TWISTED. Gaston, the guard who died and his twin brother, etc.
33:36 this bit always makes me so sad, it’s the real mr Davidson realising that he’s dying and saying goodbye to wife for the last time “maybe someday I’ll remember” brings tears to my eyes
Huh, never thought about it like that
Once again asking everyone in the comments to NOT SPOIL what other shows cast members will appear in!! Veggie has said multiple times he likes to be surprised by who shows up!
It wasn't until I saw a video ranking some of fastest Quick Changes (Quick off-stage costume changes) in StarKid that I noticed how fast some these changes were, like after Lah Deh Dah Dah Day. There's even a moment in the song where you can barely spot Corey and Jaime leave so they can get ready!
You haven't seen Paul/Jon Matteson or Melissa/Zoey aka Mariah Rose Faith before, so that's another 2 faces to add to your non-existent cheat sheet. Some of these characters do carry over into the other Hatchetfield stuff.
I LOVE spies are forever, I'm so glad you'll be watching it! Very glad to see you're doing a starkid binge :)
Just adding my voice in favor of the Nightmare Time reactions in between Black Friday and Nerdy Prudes Must Die. Nightmare Time really is amazing and gives so much more lore to this saga!
YESSSS I LOVE THE GUY WHO DIDNT LIKE MUSICALS
if you're still wondering about the musical you're thinking about reacting to 'Spies Are Forever', its by the brother/sister company Tin Can Bros. ( founded and run by Joey Richter, Brian Rosenthal ( most recognized from the HP musicals and played Professor Quirrell in the first one ), and Corey Lubowich ( has worked with Starkid behind the scenes ). their musical 'Spies Are Forever' will definitely have Starkid members you'll recognize in it, as well as some new faces.
Welcome to Hatchetfield! What a journey this will be! Im sure others have mentioned it but i would recommend watching the nightmare time short stories before diving into nerdy prudes must die (you get soooo much extra lore and will pick up on a ton of easter eggs and references in nerdy prudes). They are also just very funny and well written, sometimes even heart wrenching stories. enjoy the rest of the starkid musicals! can't wait to see it all.
That is Corey in this show but Corey doesn’t sing Christmas Electricity. James who choreographed a few of their shows is in VHS and Black Friday.
Corey does actually sing part of Christmas Electricity, I believe... When they're at Fred's party... I think part of a verse and somewhat of a chorus maybe... And then there's a bit of a reprise near the end... But yeah, he's not the primary singer in that song.
OH MY GOD I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE LETS GOOOOOOOO
It changes all the time depending on my mood but this is my current fav in the Hatchetfield trilogy ^_^
I look forward to you watching the Nightmare Time episodes one day too. Its no rush ofc I can wait lol.
Robert Manion is the guard/Gaston from Twisted! He is not with Starkid now, but you've seen him before.
I think I said before, but something to bear in mind with the Hatchetfield shows is that between Black Friday and Nerdy Prudes Must Die, that was when the pandemic hit... During that time they did a series, called Nightmare Time, which I think was recorded over Zoom... It may be beneficial to watch them before Nerdy Prudes must Die, because there will be references to Nightmare Time and some of the lore added in that, but it's not totally essential, as everything still technically stands on its own...
... But if you do decide to watch Nightmare Time as well, that's another few shows worth (some episodes are one story, others are two and they vary in length, but it might be the equivalent of 2 to 4 shows altogether, depending on which shows you compare to lol), so you may want to do two Hatchetfield shows, then one older one, to spread things out a bit better... Or you could watch/listen to them on your own time or whatever you like... There are visuals, but they aren't full on shows, so you don't miss as much by not watching the whole time (on that note, while I appreciate you wanting to note down all the names and that might be useful because a fair few of them come back, as full characters or references, I might recommend not getting too caught up on it so that you miss the show lol, I think you almost missed a few really cool visual things)... These are just suggestions though, nothing to worry about too seriously.
what a lovely surprise i can't wait for more!!! the hatchetfield saga is so well crafted and clearly made with love, and tgwdlm is such a wonderful first entry into the series. this is going to be fun.
WELCOME TO HATCHETFIELD BABY
Any other tagline for this film adaptations?
There’s another fantastic musical, The Noteworthy Life of Howard Barnes, which also centres on a man who doesn’t like musicals but finds himself in one. That’s about where the similarities end, but they both have songs called “Let It Out” 😂
YIPPEE IM SO EXCITED!!! glad youre watching this
You didn’t think about the implications!
OMG!! This is going to be a WILD RIDE!!!
Professor Hidgens (white haired man) is Rob who was in the ensemble of Twisted
Heya! You might not be aware, but, between Black Friday and NPMD there were two seasons of a little anthology series called “nightmare time” also set in hatchetfield, and a bit after that there was this shorter film called “Workin’ boys” that was recently made public (tho, I’d recommend watching working boys after NPMD because there are characters from NPMD in it)
I’m glad you are continuing the Starkid musical reactions! Hope you get to watch Starship
your reaction to jeff blim's facial expressions are pure GOLD
So looking forward to Spies are Forever and Starship!
Hey Veggie just so you know right After Black Friday is Nightmare Time. It's essential viewing since it will introduce characters you'll meet in Nerdy Prudes Must Die. Sure you can watch it after Nerdy Prudes but honestly Nightmare Time needs to be seen first
"So i think, by the end he will"
No he will not
This musical is a Starkid classic, nice to see you reacting to it. Twisted is definitely a fan favorite, think of somewhat older stuff. Nerdy Prudes Must Die has some stellar songs in it!
This is the first time I've ever seen one of gour videos, but I already love your content!
I'm so excited to see your future reactions to Starkid content :))
Yayyyy I love the Hatchetfield era
You just signed yourself up for one massive Courage the Cowardly Dog/South Park esc rabbit hole journey of a total mindf&$# if you continue to watch the Hatchetfield series.
I SCREAMED OMG I CANT WAIT FOR YOUR REACTION TO THIS
if you still want to react to "it's starkid innit" (the show they did in london on sunday) sometime there are multiple recordings of it being uploaded online, in short clips and also i think someone uploaded pretty much the entire matinee show. but just to forewarn you, it's not so much a musical as it is a concert. it's not really a story or a play. it's a collection of songs from various shows with some fun talking bits in between. but i went to see it (the evening show) and had a BLAST so i think reactions would be fun to see
the people who were part of "it's starkid innit" are as follows in case you're interested
lauren lopez (draco)
joey richter (ron)
corey dorris (yaxley)
brian holden (lupin)
jeff blim (aladdin, sweet tooth)
meredith stepien (senior year hermione, sherrezade)
jaime lyn beatty (ginny)
and clark baxtresser (usually just in the band, he can often be seen in the background on the keyboard in a lot of shows, i don't think you've seen him do anything more prominent than that but he's incredible)
I have a recommendation for you to watch at some point! It's a musical called Spies Are Forever. It's made by the Tin Can Bros on UA-cam. They're kinda related to Starkid and have a few of the same people doing the acting and writing.
he mentioned that at the beginning of this reaction :-) 1:21
I'll give the unpopular opinion here that, while nightmare time is still very good writing and quite relevant to the overall lore... They're really hard to get into, just because of the format of being done over zoom... that's not meant to discourage you from watching them. Just a warning that if you're anything like me, it might seem like a chore, or a homework assignment, rather than an enjoyable experience.
Not their fault. It was the times. It is what it is.
genuinely and fully believed you were heimler (from heimler’s history) for a moment. so glad you’re reacting to this!!
Paul is jon matteson. This is the first starkid production he was in
I was looking forward to your reaction to this show! It's one of my favourites from starkid
Watch whatever you want, my dude. Don’t sweat it
Mama Mia is an acquired taste hehehe. My taste.
Have you listened to or even heard of a musical called Epic officially released to the concept album for the first act so far. But you absolutely could reactions to the songs and any other musical fans in your audience will love it.
Omg yay! So excited for this
the offscreen name denial is so funny lol
for some reason, when I first watched the guy who didn't like musicals, it felt like it wasn't really for me? like, I enjoyed it, but I just didn't have as good a time as the audience clearly did. And then I watched it again and again and it's now one of my favorites lol I dont really get what happened, but I think it's one of starkid's bests. this is gonna be a fun ride
Ahhhh! I love this musical so much!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣💚💚💚💚💚
1:25
So Spies Are Forever was created by Tin Can Bros (Joey Richter, Brian Rosenthal, and Corey Lubowich) and while all their writers have worked with Starkid they are a separate group, though many actors they cast are also a part of Starkid (Lauren Lopez, John Walker, etc).
Nightmare Time was boring. Skip it
I don't know if I'm correct in this (maybe some of you can help me out), but I feel like you would really enjoy Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog on UA-cam!
Omg yes
You're finally watching this I'm so excited :D
I've never seen all of Reservoir Dogs, so I wouldn't have made the Steve Buscemi connection, but I can totally see the similarity when you point it out.
YESSS MY FAVOURITE ONE
I only just caught up to the musicals. How far apart are the videos normally?
Hi SomeDude! Thanks for watching!! Historically, there has been delays before videos, but I hope now to post no longer than 2 weeks between them! I know that may still sound like a long time, but I have a bunch of other things I am trying to juggle around on the channel, so I hope it isn't too long!
@@VeggieGamer ok
666th Like >:)
Yesssssss I can’t watch this for another hour but I can’t freaking wait! TGWDLM is one of Starkid’s finest works. Took them to a whole new level, especially NPMD.
After you watch this and Black Friday, I highly recommend that you watch Nightmare Time 1 & 2 before NPMD. It's probably best to skip Episode 1 of NMT and come back to it later, because they were still getting used to the zoom call format and it lags quite a bit.
Specifically I'd say to watch Time Bastard, Watcher World, Yellow Jacket and Honey Queen, as those are the ones that majorly expand the lore of Hatchetfield rather than just being 'what-if' alternate timeline stories. The other stories are fun but not necessary to enjoy NPMD apart from getting a couple of in-jokes - I didn't see Nightmare Time 2 before watching NPMD and I still enjoyed NT characters like Ziggy and Gerald without knowing their NT stories at all.
I'd actually leave Abstinence Camp for after NPMD, seeing as it has the same group of characters in an alternate timeline with somewhat different personalities from their 'canon' versions. Watching it first would be kind of like watching Jane's A Car before Black Friday... it messes with your perception of the characters.
The Witch in the Web and Perky's Buds also reveal a lot of lore (although Perky's Buds is not lore-centric, it does introduce the Metzger family).
HYPE
This is a smaller theatre definitely but if you see the audience for Black Friday and Nerdy Prudes they were huge!!
Just clicked on the video, I am suuupperr excited for this!!!!
will you watch nightmare time aswell?
I can’t remember what it is right now, but I think it has been largely recommended to me, so yes! 😁
@@VeggieGamer Awesome! 😁
My fiance loves star kid, Twisted is her favourie
Awesome! Yeah Twisted was great!!
I would suggest before watching nerdy prudes must die watch the entirety of nightmare time if you don't you're not going to know many of the references in the show
YESSS! I clicked this so fast!! You have done my first and second favorite Starkid shows back to back!!
OH FUCK YES LETS GOOOO
Just saw them live! looking forward to this reaction, tgwdlm is a classic
Their Star Wars musical is the only Starkid show I haven’t watched multiple times, so…I’m kind of glad it wasn’t voted on much. 😬
YAAAAASSSSS
Hamiltons next
Oh, yes! I have to day, I've waited for this!!!
YES! TGWDLM REACTION!
Im so excited for you to watch these !
woooooo :O so looking forward to this!
woooo been waiting for this one!
Now you gotta watch the rest of the hatchetfeild trilogy
finally, another starkid musical! This isn't my favorite musical since it doesn't have my favorite songs, I like it made moana and Hamilton references though
Siiiiigh, guess we're stuck here for a while
It is addressed at 0:13 . :)
Who spit in her bean curd?
