I loved catching the easter eggs in Nerdy Prudes Must Die that alluded to this show. Jon and Joey swap lines. In NPMD, when Richie is telling Pete that Ruth is thirsty and he could have her, Joey as Pete says "Yeah... I don't want to tho." and Jon as Richie says "You're fuckin' useless, Pete!" In this show, it's at two separate times and not in the same scene, but Jon as Paul says "Yeah... I don't want to tho." to Melissa, and later, Joey as Ted says "You're fuckin' useless, Paul!"
apparently for the photo of carol (mr. davidson's wife) nick lang literally just googled "classy beautiful woman" which i think is SO funny. source: the cast & crew commentary for tgwdlm
To clarify what happened with the cast during the filming and run of Black Friday- most of the cast actually got the flu either right before the start or after the first couple of shows. There were a couple of days where only half or less of them were able to perform and they did a cabaret of the songs rather than the whole show. I thought I read somewhere that they also did a TGWDLM reunion of sorts since most of the people who felt good enough to go on stage were actually in that show. Nick stepped in to play Lauren’s parts because she was sick and it’s sort of a Starkid tradition that he is her understudy. He also stepped in to play Emma once while TGWDLM was running because she also got sick then as well. They’re the same size and it’s always hilarious when he shows up in her costumes. There’s a video of him doing her choreo in Cup of Roasted Coffee floating around on UA-cam somewhere. But yea, they weren’t exactly tired, they all got the flu, lol.
Fun fact, Let It Out is Jon Matteson's favourite part in this. He said in the watch party he did that it was so hard for him to not dance and vibe with the songs, but to act disgusted and scared
Paul gets called a grinch, and his actor Jon ends up playing Wiggly, who's a mix between the grinch and cthulhu. Then in black friday Tom is called a Scrooge, and his actor Dylan ended up playing Ebeneezer Scrooge
@@liluziintrovertYeah, I believe Nick Lang has said the LoB pantheon was an idea at the time, but they were using TGWDLM to gauge if they could incorporate horror elements into their comedy musicals
My favorite fun fact about the end of tgwdlm is that the Langs said Jon could play it as infected or pretending to be infected (because it could be read either way if you focus on body language). Jon said that he would go between them during the live shows, but he plays Paul as infected in the final version.
At least in my mind, having Paul be infected is the perfect ending - there's no other way he'd possibly have survived the explosion of the Starlight, and it's so much more poetic and tragic that he becomes Pokey's new avatar, in the same way that Linda does for Wiggly in Black Friday
@TBakerXD yeah! I like the choice for him to be infected for story's sake, but I like that there are certain lyrics that can imply it's an act to stay alive (primarily "what if the only choice is you have to sing to survive"). I know for the longest time, a hugely popular theory was that he was partly infected.
btw the bathsalt zombie drugs line is a reference to this actually happening years ago in Florida. A homeless man started eating another man’s face and they said it was cus he smoked bath salts
Nightmare time is so unpredictable, I love it. It also gives more backstory to the lords in black and other characters like webby (Hannah's imaginary friend from black friday)
Not sure if someone mentioned this in the chat, but the photo Mr Davidson holds up is of Kate blanchett, who plays the title character in the movie "carol"
Bill is Him, Pokotho. When Paul's boss says: "What do you want Paul?", is the same phrase sayed by him but he says: "What do want, Steph?". Pokey doesn't appear with his physic appearance, just when he is summoned by Steph and the others to stop Max Jäggerman.
Pokotho's color is blue, and "blue shit" is featured throughout in the coffee pots and Charlotte's blue guts (they're definitely red when they come out and switched to blue for "Join Us and Die", so this is deliberate!) and her husband's blue "brain"! Also the background lighting color on the set generally defaults to blue.
As a youngish millennial I feel like "iconic" is the gen Z version of "epic". Had these come out when I was in high school, I would absolutely have called them epic. And I mean, frankly I'm pretty sure I did call AVPM epic. 😊 Commenting for funsies and to help you get seen. I love watching reactions/rewatches for things I love so I'll be back for NMT if you do it. Also, I like the "Church of the Starry Children" as the name for Starkid fans, esp with the implications that we're mildly culty. But Dikrats works too.
@@TheCanderemy Apologies if you already know this but for anyone else wondering and reading the comments - reverse "Dikrats" ;) It's also been used by the cast in live shows for jokes and in The Trail To Oregon as the family name by an audience member.
I know it's basically a ret-con that Pokotho is responsible for all this, but it's fine. Just assume that he never revealed himself and they never figured it out. Which is honestly pretty likely.
The thing with Nightmare Time is that a lot of is Nick Lang coming up with the most buckwild ways to torture his characters. The ones worth checking out are "Jane's a Car/The Witch in the Web" (first one is both cursed and depressing, second one will hopefully take the edge off), "Killer Track" (Kim Whalen's solo!!) and "Yellow Jacket" (Angela Giarratana's finest turn)
I’m just saying, they absolutely should make a musical where each lord in black is the antagonist. We have Pokey for this one, and Wiggly for black Friday. We need to fill out the rest
I’m soooooo looking forward to what you think of Nightmare Time, I will always talk that series up, so much lore and crazy stories ugh, I love the whole Hatchetfield universe so much NMT has some of my absolute favorite songs too, especially in the second season
I love your reactions and analysis of the musicals, it’s honestly really interesting and teaching at points and hella relatable, idk how much you know with starkid but I highly recommend you watch ‘Spies are Forever’ by Tin Can Bros starring Joey Richter (Ted) Lauren Lopez (Emma) Curt Mega (The police officer from NPMD) and a ton of other Starkid actors, it’s a separate company but works together with starkid actors a lot as it was founded by Corey Lubowich (hatchetfield series producer and more) Joey Richter, and Brian Rosenthal (Sound Designer of TGWDLM and a writer to many other things) all OG starkids Anyway Spies are Forever is really funny but a more serious musical so damn good and a kinda jab at James Bond, it is my absolute favourite and the soundtrack is aweing
At first I was like "what a groovy musical, but while these lyrics are hilarious there is so much singer abuse here with weird intervals, octaves, and syllables that don't land in the right place and crowding too much diction into one phrase." (Like how "philosophical" becomes "PHI-lo-so-FUCK-le") and I thought it was mainly fudging due to lack of experience on Jeff Blim's part, but knowing what singing means in this show, _perhaps_ it was intentional? Music written by Lovecraftian aliens? My minor gripes: The Bill track doesn't get a song. The way the small-cast cast-doubling goes, he could have been featured as the soloist in the opening since Jeff's track sings lead for five major songs: the opening, "What Do You Want?" "Show Me Your Hands" "Untie My Heart" and "Great Again". In fact, it seems Corey _never_ gets actual solos somehow? Unless I missed the show where he does. Maybe it's his preference? Ted doesn't sing *much* but does get the homeless man "hey look a new blouse" part which is a highlight. Also I understand why Paul isn't in the opening - it maintains that he *does not sing* so it's a surprise reveal in the finale, but I'm curious how it would play if he *was* just subtly in the opening so there's *one* song with everyone - since it's technically past-tense, the audience doesn't recognize he's the lead yet (put a hat on him), and it's hand waved that Emma sings with the ensemble as different characters throughout despite her similar aversion to singing by choice even though she's perfectly capable. If you pick it apart, the opening song is past tense, and technically after everyone has been assimilated. As long as Paul didn't solo in the opening it could still remain a surprise. Maybe it's just they wanted no delay after the opening but that's workable (just sneak him out a bit early during the dance-break madness to throw off the hat and put on his blazer and be there in the chair.)
Agree on the Bill being the soloist in the opening number, it would have ended up being an excellent tie-in to Pokey being played by the same actor in NPMD
Just watched your NPMD reaction while I beat the Ender Dragon for the first time at 25 years old, definitely got me watching for this and for when you potentially do Black Friday!
Ok now have watched it, love it! I agree with what others have said there's not enough people watching Starkid and those that do i feel mainly watch stuff like their Harry Potter Parody and Stuff not in Hatchetfield (which I have to admit is the only Starkid i've seen so far). It was this show that got me in to them after watching a VOD of Ramboo and Tubbo watching it. I'm not a frequenter of either of them, it just popped up on my feed and i'm so glad it did. I came to Starkid at a point where I was experiencing the end of my first committed relationship so was honestly amazing for taking my mind off of stuff and just being able to not think about all that ... I'm very excited to see you watch Black Friday and Nightmare Time. A lot of people i think sleep on Nightmare Time and while Season 1 I think does have some early covid stuff kinks Season 2 imo is nothing short of amazing and I can't wait for you to watch them. In terms of my opinions on this show ... i'm gonna be VERY controversial and say this is my least favourite of the trilogy. (don't shoot me fellow fans xd) I just adore NPMD a lot and BF I honestly just enjoy more and idk entirely why tbh. It does introduce some of my favourite Starkids like Curt, Kim, Angela and Kendall but also doesn't have Mariah (another of my favourites) so idk xdd Anyways, looking forward to your Black Friday reaction and then onto "Look what happened Nightmare Time!" 👀
This and the other Hatchetfield shows are great only thing I'm sad about is Darrin Chris not being in it. This role seems like something he would have killed at am i alone in thinking that?

Ted is likely so bleak about Bill and Alice because he knows if the school is infected then that means his little brother is dead.
I didn't even think about that until now holy shucks.

Emma spitting blood on Paul is just ❤! Such a great subversion of a hoary musical theater cliche.
