I love that this is a synthesizer that isn’t worried about being able to emulate woodwind, brass, or string instruments. It sounds like an electric beast, and it’s proud of it.
Nothing sucks more than to be watching a tutorial about your new synth only to be interrupted by an ad for guitar lessons! 😂 Great video once again. Thanks for doing this mate.
Just got my first hardware synth and this series has made me decide on the Microbrute as my first synth. Absolutely amazing explanation and can’t wait to learn more about this beast 🙌🏼
Couldn't help but notice the edit right before you were about to hit a key with the filter in high pass mode and the resonance all the way up haha. That thing screams in high pass!
Thanks again for these wonderful instructional videos. I'm pretty familiar with the microbrute, but you've got me thinking of new ways to play it (the negative envelope stuff in particular, I have got to try). I like how you walk through every single feature -- very cool.
Thanks for the reviews. I really wish the microbrute had the arp. I guess i could do as you suggested and add it to my minibrute for a maxi experience, but i love the size of the micro. And i really dig the sound of the s/p filter.
I hope you got this for free cause your amazing videos will sell tones of these. I'm sold. Can you clarify what the keyboard tracking does? That part confused me a bit.
Feel free to share your enthusiasm about my videos with Arturia! Keyboard tracking is when the voltages put out by individual keys change the setting of the filter cutoff. Usually, the higher the key, the higher the voltage, the more "open" the filter cutoff is. It allows low notes to be dark and high notes to be bright, as is what often happens in acoustic instruments. As I recall, it was first suggested as a function by Wendy Carlos.
I already own the Minibrute and love it to death, but now I'm gonna start saving my pennies for this. I could make some pretty sweet sounds if I used this in conjunction with my mini.. Anyway, thanks for the videos, the level of detail you go into is almost unparalleled on youtube
Great job Marc! You've been working hard lately, two demo series at once! I would love to get one of the brutes to put in the mix out/filter in section of my voyager. I'm holding out for a mega brute though (or a really cheap second hand micro)
This is very tempting to me. It breaks my heart that I live in Brazil and for this price the importing fees I'd have to pay for this baby would be off the charts :((((
all those things i pretend i get you explain perfectly. Keyboard tracking! finally ha ha thanks Marc look forward to seeing you on sonic talk soon hopefully.
5:14 How did you know in 2013 how BB8 from Starwars would sounds like?? I´ve got my microbrut 2 days ago and its fantastic...thanks for the tutorial...
@@EannaButler you have to move it really carefully from lowpass to about half way betwen low and bandpass - unless I just got lucky with a dodgy switch
It's a bit of a struggle to get the filter to track precisely (when all the other waveforms are turned off). I've learned that increasing the Brute Factor helps stabilizing the scaling of the tracking ;)
I think the most amazing part is how great it sounds without any effects. Many of my synths would require a lot of post-processing in terms of distortion in order to get sounds akin to this.
Is there a difference between A) turning up the Env Amt on the filter and switching the envelope to gate, and B) sending Env to Filter in the mod matrix? Because it just sounds like two different ways of modulating the filter via the envelope. Does one method have its benefits?
Quick question about the Micro/MiniBrute. Would it be bad to route the line out or the headphone out back into the line in? I believe that's what the brute factor does pre-filter, correct? Have you tried that? I don't want to do it and have everything explode. Haha.
I haven't had a negative experience with the MiniBrute in regard to keys. The MicroBrute keys are not, I suspect, for playability... at least not in regard to physical nuance. They are somewhat like buttons that activate notes. But again, keys are often the most expensive part of a keyboard... and this is a very (especially for the sound and amount of function) inexpensive synth.
***** if i ever have this little beast i just would connect a decent midi keyboard to it and as u say.. use the minikeys as a kind of switches...maybe a idea for Arturia??? release the micro as a module, without keys..
My guess is a lot of guys are going to buying these solely for it's semi modular function, and not for it's keys. I'm a crappy keyboardist, i jut want some analog flavor.
It sounds like there is some aliasing when using the cutoff with a lot of resonance, am I crazy? Is it just from the resonance distorting the output and "squishing" the frequencies?
I'm so far below this level of understanding...I'm kinda following... but basically I'll just watch till I hear cool noises and then I'll turn my knobs accordingly to achieve that sound lol
and then you can help me make sense of this serial joystick midi cable i found at a goodwill thrift shop. male serial, female serial and two 5 pin dins all in one. basically.. a special on how to plug different synths in and connect across formats. I've been Doty'd.
So, if you have a Mini Brute, do you really need a Micro Brute? Seriously, I like full keys, and don't play toy's.... Except the Honer Meladaca.... Peace!
For me, the best thing about the MicroBrute is integration with the MiniBrute. Connect these via MIDI, audio, and CV, and you have the "MaxiBrute" everyone has wished for. It is really a powerful combination.

Have to love all these affordable and characterful monosynths that are popping up.
This video pushed me over the edge, I bought one today.
+Crolodon No doubt. I don't even play keyboard and I want it bad!
+Sock Monkey I've never been properly trained to play keyboard either, but I do my damnedest!
Thanks again for these wonderful instructional videos. I'm pretty familiar with the microbrute, but you've got me thinking of new ways to play it (the negative envelope stuff in particular, I have got to try). I like how you walk through every single feature -- very cool.
Indeed a great filter. It has a character of its own all right. I think this could be the best affordable synth this year...Maybe.
Thanks for the reviews.

Just found the white SE version. Got a black one the next day as i want to patch a 2nd oscillator into the other. Great demo btw Marc.
You've turned me into a believer!

IKR I'm getting one for Christmas. These synths are very cool.

Great series of vids, very cool. Thanks.
Excellent demonstration! Kærar þakkir sonur!

Thank you, AJ! Well, if you bought a MIni AND a Micro, it adds up to a Macro. :)
Very true, but it would be better (for me) to have an all in one package
Great videos! Can you do one on things you can do with the audio in?
This is very tempting to me. It breaks my heart that I live in Brazil and for this price the importing fees I'd have to pay for this baby would be off the charts :((((
Here´s with some more resonance "turn down volume fast"
:D
Thank you for those Videos, they´re great!
all those things i pretend i get you explain perfectly. Keyboard tracking! finally ha ha thanks Marc look forward to seeing you on sonic talk soon hopefully.
Thank you, I'm so glad! I'd love to be on Sonic Talk again... it's just that the English evening is during my normal workday!
5:14 How did you know in 2013 how BB8 from Starwars would sounds like?? I´ve got my microbrut 2 days ago and its fantastic...thanks for the tutorial...
I think I might have to add one of these to my arsenal at some point.
You should!
***** I'm sure my Minibrute would love to have it's little brother to play with.
Thank you! Arturia, hire this man. :)
there is a secret setting: if you put the filter switch between low and band pass you get both at once :-)
I can't seem to get that working!
@@EannaButler you have to move it really carefully from lowpass to about half way betwen low and bandpass - unless I just got lucky with a dodgy switch
the brute's take on the steiner-parker filter is definitely a love or hate ordeal.
personally, i LOVE the sound of this filter. It's just fantastic.

Great video man!
Thanks!
You're like the Oprah of resonance.
"You get resonance! You get resonance! Everybody gets resonance!"
very nice demo! :)
Thank you!
13:06 sounds so perfect for a couple of seconds
This sounds SOOO good through some delay and other FX (using a Zoom G3 here)
I believe it!

good demo! :)
Hmmm... if I put the microbrute into the MiniBrute's external input I could have a 24db filter with double brute factor.
Is it only me, or do the sound you get around 10:50 remind you of John Lord (Deep Purple)? Anyway it's a great sound from such a small synth. :-)
You missed a filter mode. Putting the "mode" button between the LP and BP settings is definitely a different sound.
this is the 6th analog synth ive owned. by far closest to the perfect synth imho.
Happy to hear that. I own a MicroFreak and I'm thinking about buying a MicroBrute.
What happens when it self oscillates and you turn up the brute factor?
One of my main criticisms of the MiniBrute was the quality of keys. Loose and inconsistent. Did you notice this and have the improved this?
I haven't had a negative experience with the MiniBrute in regard to keys. The MicroBrute keys are not, I suspect, for playability... at least not in regard to physical nuance. With the resonance high, you can hear individual harmonics as you cycle through the filter cutoff... it sounds like aliasing, though...

Gotcha, that's okay. I'm frankly just nitpicking here. Thanks for the reply!
It would be nice to have a tiny package with the arp is what i'm sayin.
holy shit @11:50. !

Taking a break from Dr. Who to get my Doty on.
Well, I'll look into some sort of integration... so that you can get both simutaneously... :D

Wow, already it's A LOT of synth for not a lot of money.
So, if you have a Mini Brute, do you really need a Micro Brute? Seriously, I like full keys, and don't play toy's.... Except the Honer Meladaca.... Peace!
And that old Casio hand held deal from the early 80's, still have it/never play it haha
