"...a timbral spice, the monosodium glutamate of the synth..." The guy's not just a scholar of synth and brilliant teacher, he's also a poet. Fantastically helpful. *And if that weren't enough*...entertaining!
I cannot tell you how happy it makes me when I get a new (to me) synth and you have done tutorial series!!!! thanks dude so much! the volca ones and this are just gold Marc!
Something I've noticed about You Tube reviews of the MicroBrute and MicroFreak: Those Arturia products excite people who have been working with synths for decades. I own a MF and love it. May be buying a MB soon. Thanks for your reviews.
There's one other point worth noting here . As i understand it the 'saw' ,'square' & 'triangle' oscillator knobs are standard or as you would expect them to behave up to the 12 0'clock position & then after that they change from 'amount' into 'overdrive'. That's where the extra juice comes from then with this oscillator. Nice you got hold of a unit, Cool vid.
Very nice way to demonstrate a Synth. No Reverb, Chorus, Delay etc. Thanks for that. I think you miss a feature on the oscillators. ;) If you open any waveform pot to more than around 70% they start to overdrive!
This thing is full of black magic. I ordered one. Its now $199.99 from Pro Audio Star. Sick!!! I'm gonna shove everything I own through this thing BWAHAHAHAHA Can't believe that this was published back in 2013. Nobody has topped this synth yet. Thanks for the walk through!
Fantastic demonstration and enthusiasm for analogue synthesis. Also the depth of knowledge and understanding of synthesizers really adds to the clarity of explanations.
Great demo as usual Marc. I got my 1st Analogue Synth a few months ago (Sub Phatty) & your demo of it really helped me make the right choice. Loooove the Sub Phatty. I'm looking forward to demo part 2
Great demo my man................. I,m waiting for my Microbrute to arrive, so I,ll be watching all your videos on it to get a head start......................... well done !
This is probably the best Synth overview in the world. I hear you when you say it is an amazing synth and not a toy and the pace of your description and clarity is among the best on youtube. However whenever I hear the more expensive Moog type "entry level Moog" synths, I feel like I am hearing a richer sound, where the components, output stage/amp of the device are of a higher quality. I can hear on this sequence of videos that you are creating some amazing sounds but it feels rougher, possibly due to the cheaper components in the audio path. However I am sold and will be buying one! :)
Looks like Microbrute is the best synthesitor if you want to begin your journey into sound synthesis, for everyone else I would suggest a Bass Station II
FYI, the reason they're sounding so punchy is because you're turning the wave form levels over 50%. 50% is 100%. Beyond the handy 50% mark, you're actually driving the filter, which is where those hard edges come from.
You know I thought I was going to laugh at this minute synth, cause I have the big brother MiniBrute. After viewing this video, you've got me thinking the microbrute would be a great addition to put into the external input of the MiniBrute. Midi them together and you have a dual oscillator mega-brute!
On the Minibrute at least, the triangle wave has a discontinuity or 'nick' at it's apex that makes it similar in shape and tone to the "triangle-saw" waveform on the Minimoog.
Hey Marc, love your videos. I also did a couple videos on the micro brute and mini brute. I just posted one that is based around having them combined. You might like it. Also the sub osc fifth I believe is audio rate pwm amount being brought in a fifth above. The k's for your videos
I hope to be singing "I have a golden ticket" at some point in the near future. Also I'd like to finish watching this whole video without my a.d.d. taking over. And I'd like a pony.
Re the sub osc it's definitely got something to do with adding in pulse width as I just oscoped it, you can clearly see the pulse width come in deciding the waveform. here is the video Arturia Microbrute and Minibrute combined! Analog synths
Fantastic stuff - looking forward to watching the others. Arturia should have these on their website. Just curious, what inspired you to make these ...
The guy who designed that synth and the minibrute for Arturia is a french synth aficionado (and genius) who calls himself Yusynth. You can easily find his website on google.
Just bought one, second hand. Just had second thoughts, if this would be the optimum choice to begin analog with. Now I'm curious to get in touch with it. Great video, by the way.
BTW, this is a short description on how to create a perfect fifth oscillator by some simple divide by 3 logic circuits. The modification is for an old analog synth called Paia Fatman. Keep up the good stuff! home1.gte.net/res0658s/fatman/Perfect5thGenerator.html
These videos inspired me and I finally got a blue Microbrute SE. Love it. Though, I'm totally new to analog stuff; I ran it through a chromatic tuner and there seems to be some, almost random slight sharps and flats; like if c4 is fine, g4 will be a bit sharp but A4 is fine. And the whole bottom octave is a little flat (according to a tuner. My ear isn't too well trained admittedly) but I assume this is part of the "spirit" of analog stuff and not a sign of a bad unit? I hear arturia's customer service is just abysmal so I hope it's that, I'd prefer not to deal with them.
I've had my microbrute for a while now, and now it sounds gritty as hell. I don't know what happened, but even a basic triangle isn't smooth. I haven't used the brute much in a while, but it seems like it changed. also, each note seems to have a varying pitch. thank you for any response :p
Hello Marc, I know you are a busy guy but I'm struggling with deciding if I should get the Minibrute SE or the Microbrute SE. The Guitar Center in my area has the Minibrute SE on clearance for $299... the freaking same price as the Micro but I don't know which one I like better. They basically have the same Oscillator and Filter but they sound slightly different. Considering all the things left out on the Microbrute and the small differences (sound wise), which would you get if you could only choose one??????
I've spent the day recycling orga sonic boards that I've had in a box for years. Wire cutter and drill for those pesky rivets. I'm saving the faceplates for instant pseudo modular vibe. Then I found out I have a slow only Leslie. That should go well with my fast only Leslie. What happens when you attempt to clean your garage? Now I'm poolside at the Y. Was just asking myself what ol' Marc was up to. After this I should go see what Herman of Sherman fame is up to. I'm determined to make him my pen pal. Btw... Nice vid.
Do you recommend Volca Keys or Microbrute for a complete beginner? I'm not into dirty dubstep-ish sounds, I like experimenting and I'm more into warm and bright sounds, and decent basslines(nothing like dubstep)-- ambient too.
The "ubersaw" effect is produced by taking a copy of the original sawtooth wave and reintroducing it to the mix, plus letting a separate LFO modulate the signal at chosen speed for that fatness effect. I assume you set the "chorus" speed with the patch bay on the Microbrute? It's on the slider on the mini at least.
I'm guessing the fifth works by having the wave shape consisting of one cycle of 3 waves, giving a pitch of an oct + a fifth, put that on a sub gives just a fifth, maybe?
I am looking around for an old Korg Mono/Poly because of its sequencer and analog combination is good for making retro club music, but this Microbrute seems to be a better option since its brand new and much cheaper.. a new Microbrute? or an old Mono/Poly?
If you pick up the new Arturia Beatstep, a pad controller with a 16-step sequencer and CV Gate and Midi/IO for $99, you can then add any analogue synth, perhaps the Korg MS-20 Mini, Waldorf Rocket or Bass Station II. To my ears, the MS-20 sounds the best, has two oscillators and a legendary filter.
Well, I suppose it's a matter of what you consider to be a "toy." While this synthesizer is quite small, and it does have the smaller keys (although they are not "mini-keys," and are quite playable by people who have experience playing full-sized keys), its functionality exceeds a lot of analog monosynths, and its tone is unique and rich. I would like a MaxiBrute, too... but I don't know if Arturia is making one. In the meantime, you can always buy a MiniBrute, a MicroBrute and an inexpensive MIDI controller and have yourself a synthesizer that blows away some synthesizers that cost far more than the sum of those three.
You know you can actually add another extra oscillator with the audio in and control it with the cv or midi inputs. I'm gonna do it with a nanozwerg I've got and try with a microgranny
So, you open up with the statement that the osc on the micro is more powerful than the mini, but towards the end you mention the overtone on the sub being the main reason why...still not sure I understand why this the makes the osc on the micro more powerful. After all, the mini has more waveform options with the sub.
Neosashi Well, the Mini has the Sub too, and you can mix the sub and the overtone... which makes for a lot more timbral variety, as well as the "second note."
I love how much I've learned from this, but holy eff, the disparity between the speaking volume to the synth volume is giving me the bends. It's like the difference between watching a show on cable, and then the commercials. I'm sticking it through to learn, but my poor eardrums are toast
Guuuuys, this synth is ugly and it sounds ugly too... Or the way it's presented is... well... not a musical one, but how can be an instrument presented in any other way??? It's like demonstrating a flute by putting it to the end of a hoover. :D
If Marc's other videos are any indicator, the music at the beginning and end of this video were done using the Microbrute. That's a good example of the musicality of this synth. Also this is only part 1. Much more to come.
I disagree. But maybe you're just not quite up to speed in regard to my methods. I hope you're not judging the entirety of the synth on how the oscillators sound alone. You should only be judging the sound of the oscillators alone on how the oscillators sound alone. :) I don't demonstrate synthesizers to make you think they sound great when I play cover tunes on them. I demonstrate what each section sounds like, and each function sounds like so that you can make informed decisions about whether the synth on the whole will suit your synthesis needs. But if you want pretty music, there are plenty of other demonstrations!
RadicalAns It's true... all of the synth sounds you hear in this theme are the MicroBrute. The rhythm is an Apple Loop. A lot of my earlier videos' themes weren't the synth being demonstrated, but I've made an effort for the past several years to run off a quick theme when I'm done shooting.
I finally bought a MicroBrute after 7 years of listening and watching them. I will be using it for making my own drums for a sampler. I realize Im kinda off topic but does anybody know of a good site to stream new tv shows online ?
@Heath Remington flixportal :D
@Elias Bobby thank you, signed up and it seems like a nice service :) I appreciate it!!
@Heath Remington Happy to help =)
I cannot tell you how happy it makes me when I get a new (to me) synth and you have done tutorial series!!!! thanks dude so much! the volca ones and this are just gold Marc!
Thanks for your message, and I’m glad I could help!
Something I've noticed about You Tube reviews of the MicroBrute and MicroFreak: Those Arturia products excite people who have been working with synths for decades. I own a MF and love it. May be buying a MB soon.
Thanks for your reviews.
Everyone who buys a microbrute to get into synths for the first time needs to watch this series. So informative and detailed without being boring

Nice you got hold of a unit, Cool vid.
I have one, and that's true. When you do that, you get even more harmonic content, too.
Very nice way to demonstrate a Synth. No Reverb, Chorus, Delay etc. Thanks for that. I think you miss a feature on the oscillators. ;) If you open any waveform pot to more than around 70% they start to overdrive!

I think I know what Santa will leave in the Easter basket under my pillow for Hanukkah this year! ;)
false.
Just got mine yesterday. This was so helpful, can't wait for the rest.
Thank you for making this super straightforward! I just got a microbrute and have never messed with a synth before, and this is super helpful!
I am getting my microbrute today!!!!
Love your series on the Micro brute. Just got mine yesterday. It sounds incredible
Nice one. I just bought one of these second hand yesterday. Great guide, thanks.
Hi, you're Marc Doty. Thanks for everything that you do!
Great demo as usual Marc. I got my 1st Analogue Synth a few months ago (Sub Phatty) & your demo of it really helped me make the right choice. Loooove the Sub Phatty. I'm looking forward to demo part 2
Thank you! I'm glad to help!
Great demo my man................. I,m waiting for my Microbrute to arrive, so I,ll be watching all your videos on it to get a head start......................... well done !
Excellent videos (1-7) on the Arturia Micro-Brute. Thanks!
Man... your reviews are solid gold! Thank you for doing this!

Rottenlead Wargames A big part of it is the Steiner-Parker filter also. It's known for being a bit rowdy.
Thanks for this video mate ! Very clear and easy to follow.
I love your videos, they're really in-depth and informative.
Your voice just suits it perfectly too, please keep on :)
Thank you very much!
Just got one of these, looking forward to the other parts in the series. Thanks!
Nice, I was waiting for you to get yours up! class as always.
You have made this a lot of fun!
Best intro music you've ever done :)
Looks like Microbrute is the best synthesitor if you want to begin your journey into sound synthesis, for everyone else I would suggest a Bass Station II
Exactly my situation
"Keeps the syrup off my sausage" - Marc Doty should be on the box. Great review as usual, looking forward to the other parts.
What a great video, many thanks indeed
great demo and tutorial. thank you.
"Timbral spice" - I love this fuckin' guy!

From what I seen on youtube it's been done and it is real nice
Great detail intro for Microbrute. Why this didnt show up on my search result before. Weird.
On the Minibrute at least, the triangle wave has a discontinuity or 'nick' at it's apex that makes it similar in shape and tone to the "triangle-saw" waveform on the Minimoog.
Well, that explains it!
First rule of mod matrix. Don't talk about mod matrix.
ha ha ha ha
Yes
No sh*t!
JJAJAJAJA

In regard to how they achieved that fifth it's probably by means of a divide down module like you'd get for modular or something akin to an MS-50
I'm waiting to find out...
Re the sub osc it's definitely got something to do with adding in pulse width as I just oscoped it, you can clearly see the pulse width come in deciding the waveform. here is the video Arturia Microbrute and Minibrute combined! Analog synths

Bought a used one today, as well. Rewatching this series now.
Every time Marc starts a new synth series my heart skips a few beats.
Cos I know there will some weeks of good and thorough reviewing ahead.
Awww, you're sweet!

Smoother and more interesting than the minibrute, which basically is a bit of a distorted mess.
I've had my microbrute for a while now, and now it sounds gritty as hell. I don't know what happened, but even a basic triangle isn't smooth. I haven't used the brute much in a while, but it seems like it changed. also, each note seems to have a varying pitch. thank you for any response :p
I bought one of these.. so very entertaining.. problem is,I don't think mine came with software that was supposed to come with it.
Hello Marc, I know you are a busy guy but I'm struggling with deciding if I should get the Minibrute SE or the Microbrute SE. Ha ha, thanks for stopping by, Nick!
"its the msg of synthesizers"...i just died lul
Do you recommend Volca Keys or Microbrute for a complete beginner? I'm not into dirty dubstep-ish sounds, I like experimenting and I'm more into warm and bright sounds, and decent basslines(nothing like dubstep)-- ambient too.
Hadi My first was a Volca Bass. It's a great little starter synth. Monophonic, but with 3 voices. Have a look at that too.
YES. However, you can also apply the envelope to it via the patch section... something you can't do on the MiniBrute.
Wish list - miniBrute style 4 voice poly module from Arturia. With Unison, mono voice cycle mode, arpeggiator.
Polybrute!
I'm guessing the fifth works by having the wave shape consisting of one cycle of 3 waves, giving a pitch of an oct + a fifth, put that on a sub gives just a fifth, maybe?

To my ears, the MS-20 sounds the best, has two oscillators and a legendary filter.
Markus Arike thanks! looks good
Great toy...for kids with tiny fingers.
But when is the Maxibrute coming out ?
Not to mention I am a relative synth Newb with meaty butcher's hands and I can play the Microbrute just fine!
Damn it Marc, I wasn't going to buy a synth before Christmas! What do you have to say for yourself?!
It's not my fault! BLAME ARTURIA! :D
***** It's always a strange feeling having to write a strongly worded letter to someone who has made a great product, but someone has to do it.
You're right, the metalizer sounds super FM-y
Yep! The MiniBrute can actually do a really awesome DXxy slap bass using it. But richer, IMO.
FM can sound a little thin, this is true, but it doesn't make it sound any less awesome =D I have a perma-boner for FM.
Me too! I love FM. I was on two compilations: FM Funk Terrror and FM Funk Maddness :D
The Ubiktune ones?! Holy crap that's awesome! What's your artist name?
Alex Wimmer On those I'm Louis G, but I go by Extent of the Jam now
8:58 false. MFB nanozwerg is a single oscillator monosynth and the suboscillator has a "power chord" shape setting on that.
Hi Marc, does the Microbrute come with patch overlays like the Minibrute? Thanks for all your videos.
I believe it does. I've seen a few PDF's w/ people's patch overlays on the Arturia site.
It does! Thank you for watching!
You know you can actually add another extra oscillator with the audio in and control it with the cv or midi inputs. I'm gonna do it with a nanozwerg I've got and try with a microgranny
How to design this great piano sound I heard one day?? Someone could explain???
I know this synth is very much monophonic, but I'm curious if the keyboard sends polyphonic MIDI out?
Great vide, cheers!
Markus Kaczmarek nope. It only has Midi in.
@@HotStrange the sequencer does not transmit midi...when NOT in sequencer mode it's a normal controller. I.e. it's MIDI signal poly.
I always put syrup on my sausage.
The minibrute SE will come with overtone?
ok thats it, Im getting one tomorrow!!! thanks!
Gus how did it go?
dont know if you knew, but if you hit down octave one more time you get even lower!
the oscillators start driving after 12 o'clock
what was the opening music? it was cool
i think mark does em all himself
Dillon Hall the opening music is always made completely with whatever synth he's reviewing (besides the drums.)
I love how much I've learned from this, but holy eff, the disparity between the speaking volume to the synth volume is giving me the bends. It's like the difference between watching a show on cable, and then the commercials.
I'm sticking it through to learn, but my poor eardrums are toast
Does this have any polyphony?
Dr. Sci-Fi no its a monosynth, so one note at a time
That intro vingette is so weird in the left corner
0:35 gone ASMR style
pure analog...
"divide by and sum"???? for the fifth.... guessing.
The thing is loud lol
Guuuuys, this synth is ugly and it sounds ugly too...
Or the way it's presented is... well... not a musical one, but how can be an instrument presented in any other way???
It's like demonstrating a flute by putting it to the end of a hoover. :D
You're ugly and you sound ugly too ;)
If Marc's other videos are any indicator, the music at the beginning and end of this video were done using the Microbrute.
I don't demonstrate synthesizers to make you think they sound great when I play cover tunes on them. I demonstrate what each section sounds like, and each function sounds like so that you can make informed decisions about whether the synth on the whole will suit your synthesis needs.

Thousands of sounds but they all sound terrible
I finally bought a MicroBrute after 7 years of listening and watching them. I will be using it for making my own drums for a sampler. I will also be sampling sound designs from the MicroBrute to the sampler to play as mono and poly instruments. This will be my first analog synth since the Juno I bought in the 80s :)
How did the percussion go?
Because I can't make anything from mine!
