I like how this guys is so excited all the time - if he could he would eat this thing, he loves it so much. In other news, I'm out, going to Guitar Center :) I'm sold
This series of videos have convinced me !! So much timbral modifications in a such tiny and low priced synth ! And we're not even talking about the filter ! And the sequencer is the icing on the cake !
You explained fatness so well: modulating a filter in a way that causes it to saturate... ♥ Thanks x1000 for your Microbrute tutorials: had mine laying around for quite a while; it's been working overtime for the last week or so!
wow, Marc - this is some HQ info! Beware magazines!! ;) I like the (slow) speed and duration of attention to a specific section as well the logical progress of the whole chapter. Well done - thanks!
I just got the microbrute a few days ago from a friend who allegedly wanted to move onto bigger and better things -- his loss my gain -- I think I'm in love. Others have said it, but the level of customization at this price is crazy. It also just sounds great and is gonna add so much sonic depth to my music. Your videos are some of the most informative and entertaining for this BEAST of a synth.
"what world do I exist in where just using the mod wheel and its frequency modulation can I generate...bizarre timbres?"! fantastic display.
10 років тому
thanks. MicroB is my first analog, and I'm learning the basics with your videos. Its incredible how you explain and show all that wave's theory. Please, I want more!!
This synth is a beast. For this money i reckon other manufacturers better pay attention. It's not just the sound ,the quality is respectable too. I would urge all manufacturers to employ the same kind of value for money & in fact don't be afraid to make it cost a little more because people will pay that bit extra for good build quality. I applaud Arturia for this & its big brother the 'Mini' & my only request would be to axe the software which comes with it & instead give us some more switches....I'll pay extra for it !
I think that's an interesting idea... multiple versions of the same synthesizer at different price points... I would love, for example, a three-octave MiniBrute with wood panels. :D
Thanks very much. I know nothing about synths but bought a MicroFreak two weeks ago. Arturia seems like a great company. I may buy one of these as well.
I was a bit sad that there's no noise generator on the MicroBrute, but some of the modulation effects you had going there were so distorted that they almost sounded like low freq. noise! Amazing.
YES!! The enfant terrible of demonstracion. Please don't stop your wonderful obsession with analog synthesizers , your observations and explanations are always cogent and applicable and your handsome visage always welcome. please do more patch examples! (ps) I just made walnut ends for my MS-20 Stunning!
I feel like I'm 4 years late to the party but man, so excited to get my hands on this one. Thanks for the great video, will also look into the other ones in this series.
Arturia should hire you to demo thier gear lol !! another amazingly straightforward, entertaining, and highly educational demo 10/10 .............................. Iam now officially going nuts waiting for mine to arrive ............................. I had some reservations about buying it, as there are other analog synths I was loooking at ............................ not any more !! ;)
Thanks heaps for your vids, they're really helpful man! Love your enthusiasm with everything, and i've just ordered my microbrute. I'm sort of a beginner with modulars and well, synthesis in general and I think the best way to learn is to just do hands on stuff, so... hopefully it turns out okay! Cheers mate :-)
Thanks for posting these vids. I tried one of these 2 weeks ago and was impressed, but didn't part with the cash. I then watched this vid and went straight back to buy one on the strength of the "Audible LFO meets Overtone madness". Thanks for showing so many possibilities. Any chance of "Sequencer/CV and Gate out" vid??
Everywhere I go, people are talking down about this synth. I cannot see how people can justify hating on this fantastic synth. Anyone who says this is a "toy," find me a sub-$400 truly analog synth that has more variability than this.
Initially I was going to buy a bass station 2 but ended up buying a sub phatty. I had no intent of using the CV inputs on the synth but, would a micro brute interact properly with the sub phatty?(barring 1/8" to 1/4" conversion) the brute has 1 volt per Oct CV correct?? After using virtual analogs for nearly 15 years I have to say... Analog is king baby ; )
Actually, no. I specifically mean "audio-range." The term "frequency modulation" does not address speed. The slowest LFO possible is still "frequency modulation." "Audio-range" means that the modulation source has a frequency that is fast enough to exceed 20 Hz, which is the point at which its oscillation ceases to be "low frequency," and enters into being an audio oscillator... no longer LFO. In the term "FM Synthesis," the "FM" stands for "frequency modulation," and it does employ audio-range oscillators... but FM synthesis is different from simply frequency modulation, and "frequency modulation" is, like I said, not limited to frequencies that exceed 20 Hz.
Love your tutorial video's Mark, my question is which do you think is best...the Microbrute or the Monologue? ....I'm looking at buying one of them. Thanks, Tim Hope (Cambridge UK)
Btw, my past experience with mini key's have been disappointing. In the '80's it was cool to run around with a 1 and a half octave Casio, cool for the time. You can not run around with any "real" synth. Also, I am a larger man and have trouble with the small key's. That's all I meant about the key size. I love playing with the Arturia isem on the air! Peace, and am listening!
Wow that mod matrix can create such unique timbres. Your passion for this synth oozes through the video. I hope Arturia is considering a Polybrute in the near future. Thoughts?
I think I would only truly be happy with a polyphonic synth where you had waveform, octave, etc. control over every single oscillator. Of course, it would probably be too expensive. In general, I like multitracking monosynths better than recording polysynths. But I'm weird.
That's a great point. I am probably thinking more from a performance perspective because I am a keyboard player although the multi-tracking point is very intriguing. I do that with ableton's Operator synth I believe.
In all honesty, I think they have hit GOLD with this synth. I'll be honest.. I hate synth's that do too much, like the TI Virus. But this? I haven't heard anything quite like this. In fact, the only similarity is an obscure score by Malcolm Clarke for a 1974 DW called The Sea Devils! (Video on my channel - "The Sea Devil & Rock Bottom with EQ") but that was created by a mammoth synth by EMS - The Synthi 100! Which had er.. how many Oscillators? It couldn't be any more opposite to "micro"! lol! In a nut shell, this thing is a steal.
I just realized that if you octave down till the red -2 octave is lit up and then press the octave down again then the -2 and -1 octave lights will be lit and it is another lower octave, this thing amazes me everyday
it's a good thing this is so cheap, otherwise I would be sending you a bill for another piece of kit you are forcing me to buy...instead of buying say ...FOOD!
Is this a size doesn't matter video? Sure started out with that tone. Ah its the rate that makes all the difference. You said fatness..... Hope you are well. I'm recovering from a very non vegetarian experience. I wanted to see where bacon, maple syrup and orange juice could go. And I found out. Currently writing in a small enclosed space with a powerful fan.
I have one negative thing to say. When I compare the Minibrute and the Microbrute review videos, one thing is worse about the latter: no Marc Doty to see anywhere. I know it is all about the synths, but I kinda miss the visual proof of real enthusiasm. Not a big negative, but even if this is tech, I miss the human factor a little.
Well, that's a pretty positive negative. I have been trying to think of a creative way to integrate me into the videos. I always feel a bit buffoonish doing it, but a number of people seem to miss it when it doesn't happen! I'll work on it, and thanks!
I like how this guys is so excited all the time - if he could he would eat this thing, he loves it so much. In other news, I'm out, going to Guitar Center :) I'm sold
A trick: watch movies on flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.
@Kenzo Misael yup, I have been watching on Flixzone} for years myself :)
@Kenzo Misael Definitely, I have been watching on Flixzone} for years myself :D
@Kenzo Misael definitely, been using flixzone} for months myself =)
@Kenzo Misael yup, have been using Flixzone} for since november myself :)
My new favorite line (at 6:28) taken out of context: "The triangle and its terrifying metalizer."
:D
Just bought a used one for $100. It's amazing especially seeing these videos unpacking it all.
WOW!
This video is certified very good. Thanks.
Best Microbrute tutorial series I've seen anywhere by a long shot. Thank you!!
This series of videos have convinced me !! So much timbral modifications in a such tiny and low priced synth ! And we're not even talking about the filter ! And the sequencer is the icing on the cake !
12:52 Switching to the lower octave gave me goosebumps.
You explained fatness so well: modulating a filter in a way that causes it to saturate... ♥ Thanks x1000 for your Microbrute tutorials: had mine laying around for quite a while; it's been working overtime for the last week or so!
Dyde thank you so much. For a beginner sybth, the manual assumes a lot of prior knowledge.
wow, Marc - this is some HQ info! Beware magazines!! ;)

Haha, cool. Those wooden panels would make it sound better ! ;-)
***** AGREE!
The maxibrute!
Marc. Superb video.....C'mon folks, this is some awesome demo material we have access too right !!
Thanks for the best tutorial videos ever!! Nice synth, just got mine!!
Giovanni Ortiz Thank you, I'm glad I could help!
thank you so much for this tutorial-series!
also just got my microbrute and i would be totally lost without these vids
The metalizer really lets you do some great scifi type sound effects. Much love!
I already have the Microbrute, but this series of videos have really opened my eyes to the breadth of sounds that you can wring out of it. Great job!
Thanks very much. I know nothing about synths but bought a MicroFreak two weeks ago. Arturia seems like a great company. I may buy one of these as well.
Thank you for this. I was having no luck with the mod matrix until now.
Thanks for demonstration of the LFO section. This really led me to buying decision.
I was a bit sad that there's no noise generator on the MicroBrute, but some of the modulation effects you had going there were so distorted that they almost sounded like low freq. noise! Amazing.
Right on I'm smiling here actually when I watch this....you have opened us to the mod matrix!!!
YES!! The enfant terrible of demonstracion. a beautiful sounding little synth with crap loads of connectivity, what more does a man want?
Bought a Microbrute last week in 2021. This got me
Great series Marc
Thank you!
5:16 This is madness! .... THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAAA!!!
this video was on point! thank you!! amazing sounds from the micrbrute and with you explaining makes this perfect thanks!
Found these videos so helpful. I'm getting this synth in a few days :)
I'm glad they helped!
Everyone keep asking until it generates a critical mass and they have to, release a polybrute
hehe 6 years later ;)
Hey, this is so helpful. Thanks for taking the time to explain it so clearly.
Excellent videos Marc! The patch panel on this little beast! I'm so stuck between this or the Monologue:( Cheers!
The best video about the microbrute
Thanks heaps for your vids, they're really helpful man!
Love your enthusiasm with everything, and i've just ordered my microbrute.

love jamming along with my microbrute to your intro :) amazing tutorials
My first analog synth... I learned subtractive synthesis on it. I sort of miss it but I don't think I could live without 2 oscs.
Oh and got the S2 because of your vids Marc so thanks!!
Curses Gainsay, You've caused me to buy another synth I can't afford right now!
I'm sorry!
He’s not!
Another excellent video !! Wish I was ready to part with the cash, well,I am ready, it's the bloody cash that's not :-(
Everywhere I go, people are talking down about this synth. I cannot see how people can justify hating on this fantastic synth.
Anyone who says this is a "toy," find me a sub-$400 truly analog synth that has more variability than this.
I love the microbrute especially with distortion and delay foot pedals connected. Its a monster.
Getting mine soon!!! I ordered today
Make me laugh so much with your enthusiasm, brilliant as always.
In what world do I live where a triangle sounds like this
Lmfao get in Marc hahahaaa
Initially I was going to buy a bass station 2 but ended up buying a sub phatty. love your sense of humour.
I hope you make the brown note soon... could use some help here. Happy Thanksgiving!
The words you're looking for when you say "Audible modulation" is "Frequency Modulation". :P
Actually, no. I specifically mean "audio-range." The term "frequency modulation" does not address speed. The slowest LFO possible is still "frequency modulation." That is a very hard choice! Im not sure I'd want to make it!
Thank you for the knowledge and passion shared hahaha Love it!
Just got this today, thanx!
I like it. But my Stylophone S2 seems to me to have a better basic tone. And If I have to choose between function and tone, tone wins!
I'm glad to hear some S2 love!

Yep. All of that. My Microbrute devours my day. It's a giant rabbit-hole lol
Nice vid!

This gets to sounds thats borderline circuit bending. I wonder if this will be used by a lot of harsh noise artists and circuit benders
amazing!

12:53 Best Patch
I'm 50% convinced this is actually Ryan Reynolds
13:01 definitely owen wilson
Mind: BLOWN
Ears: bleeding 🤣 (in a good way)
For somebody who hates FM, you sure love audio-range LFO modulation of pitch :p
I also can not stand fm sounds but audoi range LFO modulation is cool when used in certain ways.
you didnt use the env cv out :(
The patch you've got going around 17:10 nearly made me pee my pants. If only you were playing it an octave lower!!!
Imagine that with the lfo output split to other stuff too, like the filter or pulse width
I also like the fact that if this synth was featured in a Japanese anime, they'd say in a guttural voice MEEEEEEEETARRRAIZAA
Clip?
Dude your graphic still looks ‘modern’ (9 years later)
Thank you!
can you play more than 2 keys at once? Because i haven't seen you do that.
No, the synthesizer is monophonic.
You can if you pair it with a MiniBrute.
"Moog" ryhmes with "vogue"
Voog! 8D
I just realized that if you octave down till the red -2 octave is lit up and then press the octave down again then the -2 and -1 octave lights will be lit and it is another lower octave, this thing amazes me everyday
Now, despite my best intestines.....
it's a good thing this is so cheap, otherwise I would be sending you a bill for another piece of kit you are forcing me to buy...instead of buying say ...FOOD!
I am a terrible person!
Some people like too weird sound.
Me too. :-D
The sound was so intense I started hearing your speaking voice as if was modulating! :/
Arturia are known to respond to user input so keep asking for a polybrute
What the hell is going on at 12:55 😍
