    I've said it before and I'll say it again. There is something about those 80s shredders that is definitely something special. Today's generation can try to match the speed and the licks but there's something about that original batch of guys that came out in the 80s that sets them apart. These are two of the best. Great find! Thank you for posting

    • @staszewaM
      @staszewaM 8 років тому +21

      +ExternalTooth Both are great guitarists period...but tbh, even though Jason was always the "racer" one, I find his playing exceptionally emotional, for example on "Jewel", "Altitudes" and for the songs he created after being paralyzed, putting his soul in it...

      I think Marty understands the importance of phrasing and space in blues while Jason is really trying to force to many notes in... Still love Jason though when he is in his Element. On a side note this is just a jam between friends who are young and full of the lust of all things in life. It all fun and games and without a doubt Justin is fully capable of composing spacious music if that's what he's out for even to this day.

    They are both are amazing Jason actually had a big break in David Lee Roth before Marty had his big break in megadeath . There was friendly competition between the two , and of course in that video jam it was widdley but that was because they were showing their technical command of the instrument and its that what set them apart as unique compared to the average player . if you asked them both to slow down and stop showing off they would of played sublimely and with incredible feel , they were both just showing that they had technical authority over their instruments . And in the eighties that's what set you apart from the average Joe . both Jason and Marty are supremely gifted people who were at the time showing you in that video their technical prowess , if Jason played today he'd play differently and slow it down and play the vest blues jazz fusion you ever will hear , they were young and showing their stuff . just brilliant .

    Great vid! Here's another theory on shredders: in 2014 you can just google a song or a lick and you'll get numerous tutorials and instructional vids on how to play it forwards, backwards and sideways. When you heard something cool "before" you had to get the cd, lp or even cassette and try to figure out what was going on. Or go to a concert. Or sit down with fellow guitarists. In my opinion that stimulates creativity and also open new doors when you don't get that lick "right". I think a good comparison would be TV vs. book reading.

      Marty's tone is way warmer/more bassy and mid driven (giving the warm humm) which is a super bitch to capture unless you have a quality mic and not just a camera. Just saying that Mic might have lost a lot of the clarity and put it all to bass.

    • @xOWNAGEx1

      It just sounds cleaner because Jason picks like 99.9% of the notes while Marty uses a lot more legato giving him a sound that sound less clean. But of course only a non guitar player like yourself can't acknowledge that and acknowledge what I said.

    The 80's guitar players knew how to make six strings sing! Say whatever you want of today's players and demean the one's that came before, no one can deny that most of them cannot keep up with even the least of what the 80's brought. And if you still want to say anything about it...make a video of you doing better...YOU CAN'T and never will unless you swallow your pride and learn from the REAL musicians of yesteryear.

      Joseph Holden Yep, the bar was raised in the 80's/early 90's. I still enjoy listening to "Hair Metal', and it seemed that every band had a signature Ballard. There are a few tech/fast players around today, but I would rather watch grass grown than listen to them. There is always an upside. I'm discovering some players I dismissed the first time round. Richie Sambora was actually an amazing player, as was Steve Stevens.

      Various Things
      I can understand where you are coming from. I was a huge Queen fan as well, but when I started playing guitar, for some reason I ignored them after that. I think it was because I focused more on guitar based bands. Looking back, Brian was brilliant as you say, I agree. Another surprise for me recently has been Mark Knopfler. He just wasn't fast enough to get my attention back when I was younger. Now that I'm older, I've come to appreciate his style after transcribing a few songs for a friend. Maybe I'm just an old fart now....but I still love a bit of shred.

      Shred isn't a trick, its your brain becoming faster at processing information at breakneck speed...and controlling it which is skill. Creating a shred sound that brings emotion is talent. I suspect many bands didn't practice the art of shredding because it took too long to master and they mainly wanted to get famous than articulated. But that's me, lol!

      Joseph Holden Yes but closing your mind off of today's artists is pretty bad. These guys inspired generations of new guitarists that have great feel and technique. It's pretty ignorant to knock on new artists when you assume based on a small amount that you've heard. But you know. That's none of my business lol

    Jason Becker was always better.... Not taking anything away from Marty, but Jason was the King... and would have become possibly the most well known and legendary guitar player in history.

    I love all types of music, lean towards the guitar stuff. Bought Perpetual Burn at Discount Records back in the 80s. No doubt Jason Becker is a top notch musician and composer. His classical guitar training is obvious, like Yngwie, or Macalpine's piano background.
