A: I was born and raised to Toronto, Ontario, Canada but moved to Essex in England when I was 14 years old. Hence my mixed up accent.

Here in America, it's been the norm for awhile with new home builds to put laundry rooms upstairs for the exact reasons you said, you could even build the room with waterproofing floors in mind as well, as repairs would be costly if a flood/leak did happen, it'd be worth the up front investment.

Night time clean works amazing because you wake up to a clean house and you can carry on with your work for the rest of day without the worry to clean..plus you save yourself the energy and time too !

A laundry room upstairs is genius! As mom of 4 I’m 100% it would be amazing! I know they do have them upstairs a lot in the states too!
100% yes to the 2nd floor laundry room! I'm in Canada (Ontario :)) and just moved houses and my laundry went from the basement to 2nd floor and it's life changing! It was one of my must haves in a new home and has become the standard here nowadays!
Things to consider: place it close to your bedroom and further from the kids rooms. And also if possible have the sub-floor reinforced to minimize shaking when the machines run.
Regarding the upstairs utility room: you need to consider what time of day you’ll be using the washer and dryer because noise might be an issue if the boys are likely to be in bed.

Hi Emily. I think it's a brilliant idea to have the laundry room upstairs, not only will it be covinent for you but it'll make life so much easier as laundry itself is a task & a never ending job.
& I also sometimes spend my evenings just tidying up the house as it's such a nice feeling in the morning to wake up to a nice clean house & especially when the kids are at home.
& Fraser is such a clever boy if he can do the cubix as I've struggled to complete many years ago. Lol.

Definitely do your laundry room upstairs, I dont have a whole utility room but moved the plumbing for washing machine upstairs and has made such a difference! So much easier then bringing everything down sorting then carrying back up! Would really recommend especially if your doing work to the house. Great video, helped me get my own downstairs tidy now!

The other day I matched all my socks that didn't have holes in them or were in good quality and then FINALLY threw out all the old and holey socks in my dresser. I had your encouraging voice in my heart at that moment :D
I have my utility room upstairs and my life has changed forever it saves so much time and running up and down the stairs. Only con is making sure you really sound proof the walls so that any noises won’t disturb while sleeping. But I love it

Laundry on the same floor as the bedrooms is life changing. I always used to have piles and piles of laundry to do and now that we have laundry upstairs we are always caught up because it's so easy to just start a load first thing in the morning after getting ready and before heading downstairs.
Laundry room upstairs 🙌🙌🙌 That's quite common here in Canada, I like doing laundry on the same level as bedrooms for proximity purposes, good luck with your home renos! I'll be tuning in to them all for sure ❤

Hi! Love all your videos and greetings from California!! We have a lot of homes here in the U. S. that have a laundry room at home. When I get ready to build my own home I will have a laundry room upstairs but also a utility/mud room downstairs. The down stairs utility/mud room would have the 2nd set of washer and tumble dryer, a drop zone area for shoes and coats, and a dog wash area. Sometimes little boys come home from school muddy or your kitchen towels, throw cushions or blankets get messy and it convenient to have laundry on the main level of the house as well. My wrapping items will be stored in the utility room with a good counter for wrapping presents on. Good luck with the renovation! Can’t wait to see your results!

We had a home with laundry upstairs and I was so excited about it but we didn’t like it at all! I found I am always downstairs and it was an extra trip to go upstairs to do laundry. We don’t spend much time upstairs except for sleeping. If you spend a lot of time upstairs it could work. I much preferred a laundry on the main level.

Our house is all on one level and love that the laundry and everything is on one level. I grow up with the laundry on the 2 floor and we had a laundry shoot for the 4 level and hated to tote it up the stairs.

Hi Emily. We had a laundry room upstairs when we lived in the Netherlands. It was quite handy to be so close to where the clothes need to be put away. Having said that I prefer it downstairs. Then it’s easier to dry things outside. Plus you don’t have to keep running up and down the stairs during the day.

I think the laundry room upstairs is a good idea and saves a lot of work and time.
Our washer and dryer are upstairs and it amazing! It’s so nice! It’s right next to our bedroom so I can fold on the bed and watch a tv show without lugging laundry around. We use a leak detector and it’s been great. Our laundry room is large enough that we keep our hand-me-downs in there and don’t have to cart them to the basement either! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
A laundry room upstairs makes so much sense. In our old house we had the tumble dryer upstairs and I preferred it as i could fold and put away. Where as at the moment i fold it and do leave it in the basket 🙈 great video x

It wouldn't in Australia because I try to use the outside line more - but my dream home would have a laundry chute. Yes to laundry upstairs! The bathroom at my old house had the plumbing for washing machine upstairs and a clothes rail on pulley over the bath. Washing was kept to one place, it was easy to maintain a laundry routine because it was in an every day useable space so obviously didn't want to let it pile up. And it wasn't even too noisy, we would just shut the door at night whilst the washer was on. BIG game changer!!
As someone whose father does renovations, he has done quite a few upstairs laundry rooms. You can make them flood proof by adding a small lip at the door that wraps around the room to keep the water inside in the event of flooding. Think of it like an oversized shower. And obviously code here where I live requires a drain pipe in the laundry area so you should put one in the floor upstairs. It is a big time saver and great to just have easy access to.
Nothing better than coming down to a clean house! I love cooking with my gas hob but aren’t they a pain to clean! Great idea on laundry room upstairs as washing baskets, bedrooms are upstairs my only issue would be hearing the washing finish while downstairs and the noise if I put it on while kids are asleep xx

Yes. Laundry upstairs is great. Pretty common in the US. Set your washer in a discreet leak pan made for protecting the floor. Best!
When we lived in Germany, our quarter had a laundry room upstairs - best thing ever, especially with a 1yr old!! The room had a big window so that made it great for venting out heat when drying. We also kept our airer up there for hanging when we couldn’t hang in garden. Not sure if it was a safety requirement but there had to be a fire door from laundry. Makes sense for dryer I think.
Other than an upstairs laundry, you could always look at installing a dumb waiter (check on Pinterest). So you can easily send the washing up or down!! They’re apparently very discreet and pretty easy to instal in a small area.

Hi there from Canada!!! We have our laundry room upstairs and it is so practical. Major advantage is that we don't have to go up and down the stairs with our loads of laundry. We keep everything laundry related there. Detergent, fabric softener, hamper, iron board, hanging rack and extra laundry sink...so it's quite easy access
Thanks for sharing your cleaning videos. it gives us a lot of boost when we really don't want to clean. having a laundry room upstairs is such a fab idea and I wanted it last year but my husband did not agree , just in case if it leaks and floods. Iam not sure about the noise either as it will be upstairs, but it will be a luxury to have a laundry room upstairs.
your meal videos are also amazing. I have tried tuna fish cakes and haloumi wraps and my children loved it. today instead of haloumi i tried paneer and it was as good as the other ones.
In Australia, we tend to have the washing machine close to the back door, to hang on the line.
I often think how much easier it would be to have the laundry or washing machine integrated into the kitchen like I’ve seen in so many English vlogs as we spend so much time in the kitchen.
I’d suggest a laundry chute from upstairs to downstairs to make the transport of clothes easier.
If you have the washer upstairs, you’ll be running upstairs every time it finishes to put it in the dryer then put a new load on. Plus you may not hear it finish a cycle.
If it;s downstairs, you’ll be more likely to see/hear it and stay on top of it.
As the boys get older, they will be taking their own laundry upstairs hopefully, not leaving you carrying everything. 😂

My laundry is upstairs but the only thing is that during the spin cycle, it does shake/vibrate the floor area near the laundry room. It can also get loud so you’ll have to get newer & quieter machines so you can still do laundry when the kids are asleep. It is definitely nice to have it upstairs if your space allows it!

Here in Malta it’s normal to have a ‘washroom’ we call it, on the roof / on the top floor, because we hung clothes to dry on the roof. But I’m renovating a new house now and am putting the washroom near the bedrooms as it saves me going up and down the stairs with laundry bins! I mostly use a dryer or hung clothes indoors so for me it’s going to be more practical snd makes more sense to have all clothes on same floor.
Love that idea ours is down stairs but it makes more sense to put it upstairs I’ve seen some people have the washing machine in the bathroom I think that’s a great idea too xxx
Definitely go for a laundry room upstairs we had one in dubai and we would wash dry and iron all the laundry upstairs makes such a difference. Keeps all the mess upstairs too x

I totally gave the laundry/utility room upstairs some thought when we built our house. Because we have a dog we need a utility/boot room downstairs. Instead we have a laundry shoot that goes straight into a basket in our utility room 😁 I’m sure the boys would love that!
Absolutely go for the laundry room upstairs! Once we get our extension done over the garage I’m planning on having something similar if the plans allow for it, I know it’s massively done in the US. It just makes so much sense xx

Laundry room upstairs is the way to go lol first place we lived in we had to lug laundry downstairs and it was a pain! Than we moved and had the laundry upstairs and I had such an easier time keeping up with the laundry, including washing, drying, and folding/hanging on the same day 😃
Definitely do the laundry room upstairs if you have a space. I’m not from UK and when I first moved there (15 years ago) I was always stunned why laundry is downstairs and in the kitchen with food. Now I got used to it and if I’d have the space I’d definitely do it. In Europe people always have washing machines in the bathrooms - I think you can do it there too. It’s where you take your clothes off - put them in and hop to the shower.

Great video as always , after we moved house I put my tumble dryer upstairs as I didnt have space downstairs, it's the best thing I've done wish I could put my washer up here too so much easier the dryer being close to all the wardrobes, and the noise isnt a problem either I've got a 7 year old and an almost 2 year old and they have never been bothered by the tumble dryer making any noise at night xxx

Lovely Video. I'm from Canada too and live in the uk. Really no cons for the laundry area to be upstairs...easy to do laundry. Maybe have room to store bedding and towels upstairs too and loo rolls...much easier...much love to you all...merry Christmas.

I don’t have separate laundry room, but washing machine is under the counter in 2nd floor bathroom. I really like it that way, because I can just throw clothes in laundry basket or washing machine right before I take shower. Also I dry clothes on balcony in summer and inside on winter. In summer I usually dry bedding outside.
Hi Emily, normally not one to comment on UA-cam videos but here it goes 😄 I started watching your videos in 2018 when I was pregnant with my little boy and you helped me out so much during pregnancy and also after Emil was born! Such a precious time but also a little isolating if you haven’t got anyone else around who’s pregnant along side with you! So you where my to go to mum! Just wanted to say Thanks for that ❤️! Also concerning the upstairs laundry.. I’ve got a laundry in the basement and it is such a pain to carry the laundry with my little one in tow... just consider what you like to do while folding... if you like to watch a bit of Netflix or anything of that sort ( as is with me) you’ll just find yourself carrying it down for folding and carrying it back up to put it away! at least My thoughts on that! I believe in Germany it's pretty common to combine a bathroom with a washing machine, we did this in our old house as we had a huge bathroom/small kitchen and it was brilliant. Felt much more hygienic too.
I just love it when you show the full-on "before" look; it gives me hope as I look around at the "carnage" of my day and it inspires me to give a little more and clean up so I don't have to face it in the morning.

Can't do anything with my hair down 😅 whatever it is: parenting, cleaning, cooking, studying, working on my company .... I need my hair up! I really feel the same tho ; hair down looks so much better 🥺❤️
