MSR Trailshot water filter review - ultralight backpacking filter
The MSR Trailshot microfilter is a great backpacking water filter enabling you to always have clean water when you are outdoors. It's water treatment removes 99.99% of bacteria, protozoa and particulates. It's filtration goes down to 0.2 microns and is perfect as a survival filter or for camping situations. In my opinion it's easier to use than It's competitor, the Sawyer Mini water filter but performs equally well on the trail.
Which do you prefer? The Sawyer filter or the MSR Trailshot?
Please note that it is not a water purifier and won't remove pesticides or chemicals.
Had this after watching your review 5 years ago. Been using on day / overnight treks since then, just used on 3 scorching days on the east highland Trail.
Brilliant bit of kit.
Used to use the Sawyer Squeeze but switched to the Trailshot last year. Only use the MSR now. One item I switched was to a longer tube. Makes accessing water sources a little easier. Great review!
-James
Great point James. I've done the same . I carry a bit of 3 feet tube for the harder places to reach. Best wishes
The squeeze sawyer is useless. the msr is much better. However, sawyer has a 3.75L 2 bag system that is far cheaper and a better rated filter for fraction of the price. IT is cumbersome but can still fold away easy.
Fantastic review Paul....have bought one on your recommendations.
Was looking for a hiking water filter as I'm getting myself ready for nice long days and nights on the trail after LockDown.
Many thanks..... stay safe 😎👍🌴🌴
How did the filter perform?
Thanks for this. Looking to buy one these in a minute but I wanted to see a review first.
Ok... Katadyn Hiker Pro it is... 😹🙈 Can't bring myself to pumping that way this long... Thanks for sharing! Like these informative videos.
Thanks for the video, i just returned from hiking the GR5 and HRP in France. I managed to get quite ill from dirty water so i bought the Trailshot and knew immediately that someone would have a UA-cam video showing how to use it. I knew nothing of the integrity test, this will be hard to remember in the field. I will bookmark the video for future reference.
Great review Paul, think you might have persuaded me to buy one!
Cheers Anthony.
Thanks again Anthony. I have the MSR and the Sawyer mini. Both do a great job but the MSR just pips it for me for it's ease of use and the fact you can test the integrity.
Than you fr the review, I have been using the Sawyer Squeeze, but have been looking for a secondary filter system. this looks good and MSR make great stuff but a litre per min looks a little opimistic
wow! What a great and detailed review. You should have way more views, thank you for this video. I just decided to get one of these, because of your review, even there are some people who simply can't make it work and write bad reviews. Following the instructions is IMHO necessary, not only for this water filter. Hoping that I can get a few years of use out of it. Hi from Vancouver Island/Canada
Excellent review Paul, very detailed. I have used the sawyer mini for a few years now but do like to pump feature of the Trailshot. Nice bit of kit. ATB Ben
That's the main reason I swapped Ben....Oh and the integrity test. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching
I wrap a coffee filter around the Trailshot's pre-filter & secure it with a rubber band. The coffee filter stops some stuff B4 it can get to the pre-filter.
I wish you'd shown how this water filter can be used to directly fill a bladder inside a backpack by simply removing the flexible part of a bite valve on the end of a drink tube.
Great video, Thanks Paul! I've been binge watching your videos.
was going to buy a sayer mini, but after seeing this review im going for this. cheers.
Nice review. I just bought one and was looking for videos on how to use it. Yours was perfect!
Great review again paul I have ordered one thanks for your recommendation.
Great review of a very good product. Must admit, I have been going to get one of these for ages, thanks for the reminder. Cheers Alan
Thanks for watching Alan. They are a handy bit of kit. Did you get one in the end? How do you find it?
Thanks Paul - great review. May get this.
brilliant detailed review Paul and it seemed to work very well indeed. My pink filter will be coming out more over the next few months to try and save some precious weight. Cheers for sharing and hopefully see you on the next one . Take care Steve
Looking forward to the next one already mate
Must admit I have fancied one of these for a while. Looks great.
Cheers Joss. it's a hand bit of kit and weighs nothing.
Thanks for the review! Very informative and detailed review.
Just bought one great easy video to under stand thank you can't wait to use mine this weekend ...Happy trails my friend
Looks very Gucci that does mate. Cracking bit of kit. I'm still using the Sawyer mini until I have yo replace it. Cheers.
It's not quite gucci haha. The Sawyer does the same at the end of the day. I just find the MSr a bit easier for me. See you soon Pete.
Great review Paul. This thing is a lifesaver
Hi Paul, great review thanks. Are you still using yours successfully two years on? Other reviews not so positive, but I do wonder if they’ve read the instructions properly!! Great to see your wife with you in your recent video, still working on mine! All the best, Mike.
Was waiting on clarification on this as written reviews are not so great.
A very comprehensive review. I'm sold!!!!! ATB
Thank you for a very informative video!
Thanks, mate! Appreciate your effort and good work here.
Very good review and demo, as usual.
Great review Paul..As i was saying on FB it's a great piece of kit & iv'e had mine around 14 month or so & used a lot in the peak district. As u'll know it wont take out the colour of the peat rich water up there due to the molecular bonding of the peat & water molecules but iv'e drunk gallons of the stuff & not had any issues, the peaty taste is actually quite sweet lol..tfs mate..Andy.
Sorry it's late Andrew. The tint of the water can be offputting for some but it's perfectly fine and tastes great. I do try and find the running stuff though :). When are you next out that way?
Hi Paul no worries mate..ayy i dont mind the colour & i tend to filter from a running source too but at times i have filtered from a still body of water with no probs.not too sure when ill be up nxt,im doing the peak pilgramige over the wknd & as i work shifts 4 on 6 off it gives me good opportunaties to get up the peak district mid week when its a lot quieter.
The peat in the water is actually quite beneficial health wise. Nothing wrong with brown tinted water. I'm glad you've said it's ok after 14months. Going to get one in replacement for my sawyer but some of the written reviews are poor. I suspect people are not cleaning/using them properly.
Actually i believe the M.S.R. Hyper-Flow combined with the 20,000L Jerry-cans make the best water filtration combination
Which you can actually replace your water filtration system at home with because of the fast flow rates
1) M.S.R. Hyper-Flow 3L Minutue (Micro-Filtration) .2 microns
2) 20,000L Life-Saver Jerry-Can
4L minute (Utra-Filtration) 15-20 nano-meters
Also next week Icon Life-Saver will be announcing their parnership with Graphene makers in the U.K. if you dont know what Graphene is look it up on UA-cam it has the potential to reveluotionize the water filtration market
Lets all pray that with Graphene Icon Life-Saver can engineer it with pores as small as 1 nano meter that can reject all contaminants except the water molecule itself including salt water
With Graphene Icon Life-Saver might finally solve the age old promblem of clean drinking water where you can literally
Go to any water source dont matter if its Sea-Water or full of Chemicals & Heavy-Metals and be able to get a fresh drink of water
Excellent video; informative and detailed .. Cheers.
Thank you. Glad you found it useful
Keep them coming.
Awesome review, thanks :)
How does this not have any competitors though?!?! I saw it mentioned in a list, (ended up here doing more research) and looked around for cheaper alternatives to compare. The only similar filter I found was the Sawyer squeeze, which requires you to fill those stupid bags first (why is that useful at all?).
Maybe it's a patented design. I'm sure impitations will follow at some point
One benefit of the squeez systems is that you can bring that dirty water with you as extra for later, i think that can come in handy ;)
Hi Paul - how are you finding this after two years of use? I read many negative reviews on how long the filters last before the rate slows dramatically. However with reviews more people are prompted to write one to complain than to praise, so what's your honest experienced view now?
Good clear instructions and review. Thanks.
Nice review.
How is it compared to a Sawyer?
I like the built in pump on the MSR.
The safety check system on it is awesome.
I've used the Sawyer mini and they suck - the MSR is a much better system.
I have both and the MSR is so much easier to use. The integrity test also gives you peace of mind. The Sawyer doesn't have that. Best wishes Paul
Many thanks for the replies.
The MSR looks like simplicity itself.
Thanks for the great vids and for explaining everything in aneasy to understand way.
Great video pal been looking at this for about 2 weeks and this is the best review video I've seen im going to replace the Sawyer filter for this thanks for taking the. Time to make this video a.t.b Andrew
Thank you for watching Andrew. I still have my Sawyer but prefer the ease of the MSR. best wishes mate
How did msr perform?
Top review, perfect explanation
Excellent review! Thank you!
Thanks! Going to buy one now
Just what I'm looking for great stuff.
Hi Paul.
Have you ever had on-trail problems/fails of your TrailShot filter during the years of use?
I've got one of these some time ago, used once and put aside for maybe a year, then recently googled user manual for it to refresh some usage details before my upcoming trip and discovered a bunch of failure reports all over the internet, including the MSR site review section for this product. Not that I have a lot of options now, I still will be taking this one with me, but maybe I have to make some changes for my route and don't rely on this filter alone)
And anyway it would be helpful to get an update from the true user after such a long amount of time passed since the review filming.
Thank you in advance, and stay safe on the trail!
The only issue I've had is that it takes a long time to pump and fill a bottle. I've since switched to the befree as it filters quicker
I'm curious about the engineering / science behind that integrity test
Hi Mez.. Another great example of good kit and how to use it.. thanks for Sharing with us.. atb Lee
Thanks Muz. It's a very handy bit of kit. It weighs so little so it's a no brainer not to have one in my pack. ATB Paul
Hi Paul, thanks for your great videos. Besides enjoying the fantastic British landscapes, I als learn a lot about the equipment that I should bring with me when hiking.
Can you please tell me what kind of water bottle (wide opening type) you are using in this video?
It's a 1l Nalgene bottle.
@@PaulMessner thanks Paul. It looks very convenient to me.
Great review and very informative. Thanks
Great review.. Thank you
Hey, Paul, 2 years on, are you still using it? If so, is it the same one or a new one?
I'm amazed that something like this even exists. 😃
I still have this but don't use often now.
Paul Messner any reason for the lack of use Paul? :)
Hey Paul !
I'd like to know too.
Loved the review
Great review Thanks :D
Great vid, I appreciate the info cheers. Do you think this would work as a syphon? Fill a 5 litre container, place it higher than the pan you're pumping into, start the syphon by squeezing, then place your thumb over the outlet to create vacuum. Repeat several times ensuring the outlet is higher than the intake pipe, it should flow naturally through syphon. Please try it and let us know! Many thanks
Not tried it as a syphon. I don't think the diaphragm would allow it to continue to flow but you never know.
@@PaulMessner I'm with you, it's a tiny outlet. Thanks for the reply
Nice bit of kit review 👍
Cheers Sam. Gald you liked it.
Hi Paul, Could you tell me where this is made?
So which filter to use in freezing conditions?
I wanted one of these since I saw Mikes at gunnerside last year. Mainly because of how much quicker and easier it is to filter with, as the sawyer is so slow and awkward.
Are you going to gnbc this year?
Thanks for sharing, Atb mark
I really like it Mark. Been using it over the Sawyer for the past year. So much easier to use. I'll be at Edale. See you there mate. ATB
I bought an MSR Trailshot. Just back from a 4 day hike. Verdict: it's a piece of junk!
It stopped working after 2 days. I've tried cleaning it (at home in the sink), did the integrity test (fine) - it's a gimmick. Don't buy it. The bulb only fills to a quarter, so you just get a trickle. I have subsequently found a lot of critical reviews that describe the same problem. I'm going back to my trusty Sawyer that I've used for years and hundreds of litres.
Hi Paul. Mine doesn’t want to reverse pump when I squeeze it once it says indented. Does it mean it’s damaged?
Thankyou for the very thorough review.
No worries. Thanks for watching
years later is it still working? i hear many people saying it only last a couple of outtings? i had a Sawyer mini fail on me (integrity test failed) so i am looking for a better quality filter.
Great Video Mate
Thank you Mark. Glad you enjoyed it.
Great stuff
Walter carrying uv water cleaner?
When you take of the cap is it normal the filters up a little bit
Dose yours have a slight chlorine taste.
A nice bit of kit there Paul Atb Carlos
Cheers Carlos. it's very handy and lightweight. Hope you're keeping well. Paul
I'm all good thanx Paul, hope to see you at Edale. Atb Carlos
Are you getting paid by MSR for this?
It is good!
That’s an awesome piece but isn’t a simple old Sawyer many people filtering 100,000 L
I feel you all pains on the rippers I’ve had good luck with getting dumps from Alexascard on telegram, he’s one of the few that didn’t block me after I sent him btc
Informative
These are awesome I have one...😁
Agree totally Kevin
Survivor filter Pro and Pro X(electric) are much better
Better off with the Sawyer Squeeze. 0.1 micron filter and lasts for 1 million gallons. Yep, 1 million *gallons*, and they guarantee that.
Even the Sawyer mini is good for 100,000 gallons
MSR are the Apple of products. Nothing really exceptional, and boy do you pay for it.
Nah. Katadyne BeFree for me.....
Just like milking the cow ont farm
💦😛👍
Watched 30 seconds of this and switched off. Your editing - every 4-5 seconds is unbearable
Makes a great breast pump too. Extra protein on the trail
If you are interested in dumps and pin message me on WhatsApp +1 (567) 284‑7978
Paul liked every comment other than this one lol
Do we really need such close-ups of your face?
