  • With the 1966 release of In My Life by Judy Collins, containing Leonard Cohens Suzanne and Dress Rehearsal Rag, Cohen became a folk rock icon of the singer songwriter movement. Already an acclaimed poet and novelist in his native Canada, Cohen moved to New York in 1967 and released his classic album Songs of Leonard Cohen on Columbia Records. Its music launched Leonard Cohen into the highest and most influential echelon of songwriters. Cohens elegiac work is widely used in film and covered by artists from Jeff Buckley to Bono to Bob Dylan to R.E.M. As Kurt Cobain said, Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld so I can sigh eternally.

And at the same time he destroyed the lives of those closest to him. Much love for the vastness beyond good and evil, that was and is Leonard Cohen. Much love from a special place that is Montreal.

I will never forget the first time I heard Leonard Cohen, it was at a punk show (Retox) in Downtown Houston & in between the bands set, right before Retox got on, I hear over the speakers Spanish guitar chords & a man saying “& Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water...” & then another song played “He was just some Joseph looking for a manger...”
Those lyrics stuck in my head for the rest of the night. I told my friends “do you hear this?” They didn’t answer me because they were hypnotized, mesmerized by his calm voice & prophetic lyrics. I thought it was Bob Dylan at first, it wasn’t until I looked up his lyrics when I realized that it was Leonard Cohen.
I can’t remember the first time I heard Bob Dylan, but I will always remember the night my life changed forever, the night I heard Leonard Cohen. Since then I learned how to play all the songs from Cohens first 3 albums. I owe a lot of my guitar playing to Leonard Cohen, he taught me how to play the right way. Rest in Heaven, Mr. Cohen & thank you for the beautiful music & poems you gave to this world.

This man tamed a wild audience on the Isle of Wight back in the day. The crowd was getting ugly and he charmed them all. Many of the crowd weren't there to see The Who, they were there for Leonard. He was a gentleman and a poet of great repute. RIP to the greatest songwriter of all time.

I only saw him live once, but it was the greatest show I've seen, bar none... and I've seen a lot of shows. Leonard Cohen was a graceful performer... full of grace, full of charm... even the way that he moved onstage was so expressive. It was the kind of performance that left you feeling like you'd just eaten the most wonderful dessert, totally delicious, totally fat free, lingering on the tongue for days. Like something impossible.

I have been listening to his magnificent songs since 1969 & I wonder why people in Europe had more admiration & respect for him than in North America particularly in the USA. Many of his albums hit top 10 in a number of countries in Europe but never here.
I think he will reach his immortality now that he is gone. After all we the human race always respect people when they are gone from us. RIP Leonard & thank you for all those lovely songs. I will cherish them forever.

We had the privilege and very good fortune to see and hear Leonard Cohen twice during his last few years touring, both times at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He was absolutely amazing, performing at that time in his mid 70s, for some 3 1/2 hours with barely a 15 minute intermission. In that 18,000 seat venue, on both occasions, you could hear a pin drop throughout his performance, that is how completely he drew in and totally captivated his audiences. It was, on both occasions for us, a very moving experience. Thank you, Leonard, a life very well lived.

E fino all'ultimo ha continuato a ESSERE. A vivere, scrivere, amare, cantare. Io questo lo trovo bellissimo, mi sembra un dono ma anche un esempio da seguire, per quanto possibile.

wow he read the PERFECT line from his work. Half perfect because it's so much less known but the lyrics in that song are his top 5 greatest. Plus it's one of his few songs/along with Partisan that isn't about the same thing (the dirtiness of the human condition) over and over and over and over - never offering any solution or hope or as he put it "SOMETHING TO FIGHT FOR, NOT THE RIGHT TO DISAGREE (which is a poetic way of saying 'uncertainty/doubt'.... his works biggest flaw - just very excellent poetry about doubt and corruption
