    Installing stucco for homeowners.
Simple stucco instruction for DIY stucco 101
Howdy Folks, all the basic tools we use and recommend on Amazon's website.

Live long and plaster hats, shirts, and other cool stuff. www.livelongandplaster.com/
    Kirk Giordano Plastering Inc.
This video shows the beginning of learning how to apply stucco quickly, correctly, and skillfully.
When the brown coat (second coat) started to dry, I applied a textured finish to match the existing taping mud finish on the rest of these interior walls.
FYI, What is stucco? It’s usually Portland cement mixed with sand. Whats Concrete? It’s usually Portland cement mixed with rocks. What’s Cement? Cement is the binder, or you can call it an “adhesive or additive” that binds the materials.
As with almost all cement stucco, both coats can be applied on the same day.
This step-by-step stucco application shows all beginners how to do it quickly.
BTW, The stucco loses its “packs" if over-mixed.
Or over-troweled, so put in on with as few strokes as possible. In other words, please don’t play with it or over-trowel the newly applied stucco.
What the heck does that mean? Excellent question; Glad you asked.
The strength of the stucco can be compromised If it is over-mixed or over-troweled.

Good morning Inke Maris, this is perfectly normal. FYI, when anyone starts to apply cement plaster at first, there are muscles in your forearm, wrist, deltoid, and shoulders that you more than likely didn’t know existed.
These muscles are rarely used in everyday living.
Thus they will feel like they are on fire or swell up when you start to apply plaster, no worries, this is an excellent sign of unused and still weak muscles, not damaged muscles.
Your wrist, forearms or shoulders will burn, but that's o.k., simply do something else constructive on your project, mix mud, clean up, anything that will give these used muscled a short break.
Then when the soreness begins to go away, begin again slowly.
For the average person, it takes a week or two to get those unused muscles strong enough to move mud where you want it.
BTW, if you fall off a bike and hurt your leg, that's a bad pain or soreness, to strengthen muscles you didn’t know you had, this effort creates a beautiful soreness, this is my personal opinion. The complete plastering encyclopedia on video, by the plastering messengers of UA-cam.

I just found Kirk's site a week ago and I'm just amazed by all the knowledge and skill he's showing here. I have a hundred year old house that is stucco over clay tile and in need of repair. I'm pretty clueless as to how to handle it, but now I feel like giving it a shot just for the fun of it. Really great site!

Good Evening Adrian dude, the white long sleeve shirt is a habit from when I used to work behind a Tommy gun, or what's known as a plaster pump.
Any area not completely covered ended up covered in stucco.
The lye in stucco burns the skin like acid. Old habits die hard.
I also had a bandana coving the head and a hat with thick glass and knee-high boots taped to our pants.
At break time we'd remove the glasses, we all looked like raccoons.🤔

Morning Jordan Hanson, thank you, positive attitude, huh?
maybe is because i'm one of the geeky dudes that feels applying plaster is really cool plus plastering brings on a real sense of pride and pleasure during and after the task. I reason it's caused by the deeper breathing with the applications of any physical work which forces extra oxygen thereby creating more endorphins and serotonin which brings on a sense of pleasure and relief from any mental or physical pain from life's normal and necessary realities. Cheers! Kirk Giordano

I've paid countless times to have stucco work done, which I've watch take place, but it wasn't until I started watching your videos that I decided to give it a try myself and surprisingly enough, the work I've done has come out better than expected. Ive been getting more into plaster work lately. I learned a few lessons from a friend that does plaster, watching you has helped a lot with understanding. I still have a lot of questions but I suppose we learn what we lear as we go. Im a painting contractor that also does drywall and skimcoats for 30 years. Two years ago I started learning more about plaster and i just want to say not many people are good teachers and in the plaster community in Connecticut, they dont share their trade secrets. So thank you for being a great teacher and for making so many videos!

I never did stucco, but I did drywall for 17 years before I had to retire due to back issues. It is satisfying to see a pro do good work. My boss learned the trade working for Meiswinkel in the bay area and moved to Amador county in the early 90's. I retired in 2012 and in some ways I miss it.

Here in Florida we have to do it different because of the high humidity. Here you have to let your scratch coat dry over night. Reason is it hardens but the water will move into your finish coat causing it to sag regardless how thin it is. We also held back about an inch from the very top and feathered it down on the scartch coat. Two reasons, one it reduces clean up, and reduces chances of the grey coat showing thru color coat. We never used a slicker, or as you call it a cheater. You want work less harder you put it on strait and trowel mark free. I no longer do this work because it didnt pay enough for the destruction of my body, cloths, and vehicles.

I can't stand seeing guys on site with dirty baked on tools. You get an idea of what their attitude towards their work is all about.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  3 роки тому +1

Howdy Sloane my fellow plasterer, the fact is stucco and or concrete both have lye in them, lye is mean to our skin or anything else it gets in contact with.🤔 When I first got into this trade, I tried to be cool and not wear gloves. It took less than a week for my fingers on both hands at all the joints to start bleeding and hurt like hell. It got so bad I couldn’t open my hands, let alone use them.😏
I had to apply vaseline to them at night and put them in sandwich bags with rubber bands so that the vaseline wouldn’t get on the beddings. After about 4 days, the pealing of the flesh stopped. I’ve been wearing gloves ever since.👍
This is also the reason why I wear long sleeve shirts. A couple of weeks ago, I went to work in some decent tennis shoes, at the end of the day, I lost both soles as they lye ate the glue or adhesive.
About a week ago, I wore my favorites hiking boots.
Timberland brown boots as I thought I was just going to lath, I ended up deciding to apply the stucco too as we had the time, not wanting to beat up the comfortable hiking boots, I used red tape so they would get stucco on them.
As I was using a water bucket, the dammed water with stucco got in between the red tape on my boots somehow. I lost the sole on one, and I know better.
On average, some of the best work boots last about 4 months with me before that get eaten up from the lye.😉
When I was hod caring back 35 for more years ago, I remember the older hod carries used to pour transmission fluid all over their arms in the mornings to protect them from the lye. I remember once asking one of the hoodies, dude, you ever hear of transdermal?
He laughed and called me a pussy or wuss, so I just watched a few guys do this stuff. Today, a couple of these guys twitch like they are being shocked, and a few have lost their fingernails. 🤷
The moral to this history, It’s nothing personal. Lye is not friendly to get onto your flesh, let alone inhale it as your mixing, so don’t do that.

Good afternoon Band Silver, my fellow UK plastering brother.
You and I know no one can master the tools within a few weeks, plus mastering materials does take 10 to 15 years.
Unfortunately, folks have to start somewhere, and if there's little to no opportunity, they can't wait for thier ship to come it, they like myself must swim half way to meet it.
Especially, if they like me when I was 20 had kids and a wife and no way to put food on the table.
Getting caught stealing is no way to place food on a table or to show your wife and kids you love them, plus it's depressing sitting in a cell thinking, what if.....
Thus, I'm no one's judge with whatever training one gets and how they choose to use it.

My responsibility was to create a texture that looked like taping mud. Taping mud has no sand, so I went with Santa Barbara, which is the finest sand sold or 30/30 grit.

I remember back in the 70s at my dad‘s plastering company in Los Angeles, I was very young my dad had the hod carrier set up a mortar board and stand then had the bored filled up with mud gave me a hawk and trowel.
Then my dad said Watch demonstrated about four times on how to properly take your mud off your hawk .note there is a skill to this it helps you to judge how much material you put on your trowel and how the material lays on the edge of your trowel this is extremely helpful for finish work.
Then my dad said you’re not coming off that board until you learn to take mud off your hawk with your trowel properly. I’ve always used 11 inch trials Curry Marshalltown with 11 inch hawk I outspread most guys that have a 13 inch hawk with a 13 inch trail and over the years you learn not to waste strokes every stroke you make with your trial is intentional and never random. Learning to take the mud off my hawk properly and I was in the union and they really stressed on that but it completely helped me dial in the amount of stucco I needed for texture and doing an interior thin wall and hard wall.
Keep up the good work brother you’re an amazing worker

I am a plasterer with 10 years experience and most of my family are plasterers. When you are floating a wall you are suppose to start off from the same side you write with not opposite. You will drop less doing plastering this way. The only time you plaster to the opposite side you write with is when your skimming. And i also find it funny how he is using a rounded trowel (for floor screeding) this guy isn't a proper plasterer not only this your scratch coat isn't suppose to be straight lines they are supposed to be a wave...... POOR VIDIO DON'T PLASTER LIKE THIS IF YOU DO YOUR PLASTER WILL FALL OFF!!!!!!

@@FSAUDIOGUY Yes when you are floating a wall a scratch coat is applied followed by second floating coat. On your scratch coat you scratch wavey lines for a undercut and overcut this will provide key for the second floating coat. You may agree or disagree with me but I can say yes I do have 10 years experience and I am level 4 qualified which is the highest qualification in plastering. Whilst my dad and uncles are plasterers too together we have (OVER) 30 years of experience and all city and guild qualified,we where all taught the same way of plastering and at the age of 28yrs I am running my own plastering business.

      Morning elitommy747, good eye brother.
My knees after 35 years of not wearing pads are a bit beat up, but sometimes I wear my Scars pants or ZKARZ as they are spelled, they have built in knee pads.
They fit and look like regular blue jeans except for the built in pads, they help big time.
One of the benefits of providing instructional videos is folks send me stuff to try out and if they are good products I show them in our videos. f you type in “ZKARZ kneepad pants” I show these cool pants with the built in knee pads.
They are an intelligent alternative to cutting off my blood circulation with tightening pads so they won't keep slipping down my leg hour after hour.
