Boat Comes in WAY Too Fast!!

  • As we continued our cruise northward towards our next destination, we had a bit of a scary situation while moving up in the flight locks at Healey Falls (goo.gl/maps/FD.... Apparently the guy driving the boat approaching the lock on the upper side came in way too fast, sending his sizable wake crashing over the lock gates!!
Not only was that potentially dangerous for any other boats already at the top side - as well as us, if were parked any closer to the lock gates - wake like this can do serious damage to the lock gates and can knock them out of alignment! If the gates became inoperable, repairs would require completely shutting down the upper reach (approach to the lock), possibly draining it and removing the gate(s) with a very large crane. I've seen that having to be done at the Fenelon Falls lock a few years prior, after a vessel had collided with the lock gates in that situation.
Bottom line is that EVERYONE must remember to approach ALL locks VERY slowly. No matter what, your wake will follow you, making it (at the least) uncomfortable for yourself and fellow boaters, or potentially resulting in damage to boats and/or infrastructure.
Location is on Ontario, Canada's lovely 240 mile/386 km Trent Severn Waterway.

I was so happy when I found your channel because you actually took us cruising. I could enjoy the sounds along with the scenery.
Now I’m seeing fast forwarding and music covering up the wonderful sounds of nature, the water, and even the engines - I love it all.
I know that you can’t please all of the people all of the time but I wanted to let you know that I’m one that enjoys being as close to the real thing as possible.
Thanks for all of the work you put into these videos, they are amazing.

Sometimes the music is is used to cover up background wind noise (which nobody likes) or even conversations between us that I'd prefer remain private.

Wow that guy must've come in very fast to create that wave. Funny how he had no clue he was blocking the channel. Good thing the lock wasn't full of boats. As always a great video Paul.

Fast approach, with a sudden stop in the middle of the channel. I can't see that pilot being experienced at all!

Stoked to get my Doral 270 out of storage in May sometime. Weather hasn’t been the best in New Brunswick(Saint John river/Fredericton area) we will prolly see some degree of flooding from the snow melt up north. Still happy the season is almost here for all of us! Great videos and thank you!

Nice!! Fingers crossed, we'll be launching beginning of May - if Mother Nature cooperates 😉 I was on the boat for a couple of hours today, charging the batteries and fooling around, but the cold sent me back home. Sunny, but chilly, with lots of ice still in the marina.
Oh well, here's to another great season!!

Another good video guys, love the music. Disappointed about Campbellford, had a small cottage on Lake Seymour and love doing the cruise downtown for ice cream up until 2013. Hopefully they will wake up! Lady Daldom 👍🏾

I hope so too. For me, that's not a destination we'll be returning to any time soon. Better options staying at the locks...

As a resident of Campbellford, I'm disappointed at Old Mill Park Staff.. Campbellford is a stop for almost everyone coming up the system. Lots of money flows into our local business from the passing traffic. Our town prides itself on it's tourism, someone needs to do better.

Agreed! Issues like this always come from the top down and clearly 'management' has absolutely no clue as to what's going on there. Sad and frustrating to see what used to be a great facility deteriorate like this has become. As I mentioned in the video, the 'staff' had absolutely zero care or training whatsoever. From my initial phone call to book our slip, right up to questioning why all the garbage cans were overflowing, I felt like this was a typical 'hate my job, hate my life' type of robot placed there to merely occupy space.
That, as well as the sketchy characters hanging around really took away from the pleasant and relaxed feeling of of our prior visits.
Overall it was not a happy or relaxed visit at all and I won't be returning.

It takes all kinds. Kind of like shopping at Walmart. Anymore I just look and shake my head. One time I counted almost getting hit 3 times just walking to the store from the parking lot. Lots of them out there. Aside from that I loved your video.

Underscores the need for boat operators to take personal responsibility for hands on learning of how to responsibly handle a boat before they go boating. Sadly two lives were lost this Saturday while boating on Lake Eloise in Winter Haven, FL. They rented a 16' Tahoe bow rider and there were 3 adults and two kids - 8 and 10 years old on the boat. They were required to take a "class" in order to rent the boat but all of them had zero boating experience. The winds picked up to 20 mph and the water became rough and choppy (small lake that's only 1.3 x 1.9 miles). The wife jumped in the water to swim out to deploy the anchor - they didn't know they could drop the anchor from inside the boat. She started struggling to get back to the boat as the wind blew the boat away from her. Two men jumped in the water to rescue her but they were unable to get to her and drowned while trying to rescue her. She survived but the 2 kids had to watch their dad and his friend drown while trying to save her. The 10 year old call 911 which is the only reason the mom survived. No PFDs on anyone. We saw a similar but less tragic accident play out at our marina 2 weeks ago with family who had recently joined Freedom boat club and was out on the water with little or no training. The grandmother decided she didn't want to wait to exit the boat from the swim platform and instead tried to climb up over the bow rider's forward seating and simply step down onto the dock. She didn't expect the boat to tip and push away from the dock and she hit the dock with her upper body and fell in the water. Thankfully EMS was able to stabilize her and she was OK. I was talking to a coworker a few weeks ago and he's been boating for a couple of years now with his wife and 2 sons in an 18' bow rider. He had no idea that GPS is not 100% reliable and that errors occur due to solar activity and atmospheric conditions. He didn't know why people were putting stern anchors out when "they're just anchoring off the beach". When I explained how the wind could shift and swing his boat around and out to sea I saw his face turn pale when he realized how unsafe it was to not have a 2nd anchor out. There simply no excuse for not taking this stuff seriously and acquiring as much knowledge as possible from other boaters around you. That's how most of us learned. Sorry for monologuing on this subject but it's very upsetting to see these things occur. I'm glad I took the time to coach my friend and coworker - well worth the time to potentially save a life.

Sadly there are too many similar stories each boating season up this way as well. From lack of experience or poor judgement, many suffer the consequences of tragic on water situations like these.
I could recount too many sad events I've witnessed going back nearly 50 years of my boating life and we still see bonehead moves like this every summer...

@@BoatingWithBoogaboo Sorry for being a downer but I had just read the news story before I saw your video. It was disturbing to see the guy in the flybridge being so careless and clueless. He put you guys and the lock staff at risk- all because he's either too foolish or proud to get some hands on training and coaching. There are tons of boating classes and resources out there so there's really no excuse.

As Bill Rouleau replied, it swamped the lock that we were in. Had we been right up to the front of the lock chamber, we would have got all that water onto our boat!

Yes! A number of years ago we saw this same thing happen while we were waiting at the bottom side of a lock. The approaching boats brought in so much wake that when it all smashed against the lock gates, they actually shuttered! That was a scary experience standing a few feet away from potential disaster!!
