    One of the tricks I do is use a cheap spray lacquer on the screw terminals. Keeps them looking like the day you installed it and if you need to service it the cheap lacquer will flake right off once you turn the screw.

    Great advice AGAIN! The one new thing I got from this is to use a fuse block with blade fuses. Gone will be many in line glass fuses. Oh boy, another project. Oh, to make pulling cable easier the next time I use a messenger line that stays in the channel. To support another tip you suggest that I have always done is DOCUMENTATION of everything maintenance, improvements , etc. Thank you for keeping us up to date with advice.

    Jeff, great content, thamks. Something to remember when doing your own DIY work on your boat, always use ABYC approved components. The problem is when when you use non standard components can result in your insurance underwriter refusing to pay a claim if they find components or repairs that do not meet ABYC standards. If your DIY work results in a fire or sinking you could face a total loss.

    Hi Jeff, as always it is top quality information. I have been following your videos last 2 years and this weekend, we got our first boat. It is a boat from '78. Previous owner (the first one) took very good care the boat but many things has been done early 80-90s. We would like to renew all electrical circuit. Including batteries, power distribution, cabling, solar panels, lightning etc. So it will be a lot of work.
    But from your experience, what do you recommend, shall we do it right away, or just wait a bit and understand the boat? Review previous owner's documentation, and boat manual and do it on winter we we take the boat to cradle on ground?
    As electronics engineer, there are many great people who share his/her experience with the community and you are one of the great examples. Thanks for doing this!

    Hey Jeff,
    I just want to thank you for all your work on these videos.
    I'm usually a little bored in winter, and last year, as well as this year I have been upgrading my electrical skills. You have given what is the equivalent of a college course to me.
    Anyway, I wanted you to know that because of you, my electrical work has gone from good enough hacky, to works of art. You really inspired me to take it to the next level. And again, I thank you.

    Jeff, What type of shore power plugs do you use? Can you do a video on shore power plugs? Modern SmartPlug vs the antiquated 1938 NEMA L5-30, since many boat fires start in the shore cord/power system I think more info should be out there on this fire hazard on boats.

    • @PacificYachtSystems
      @PacificYachtSystems  2 роки тому +1

      Good suggestion Abel. We've tried SmartPlug over the years, and don't recommend the DIY kit as too many retrofit installs don't hold up.

    I am redoing some wiring now, including 40yo welding cables that were used for the starters and grounds with the "green growth" and when I cut through them to see the depth of corrosion, I was surprised by how much good copper there was, even with uninsulated ends and routed in the bilge. I'll be upgrading anyway and looking forward to seeing your next video

    That was a great one again, Jeff. Talking about cutting holes for cables, do go back and fill in the surplus hole to prevent the possibility of water flooding? An example in my battery box the builder installed a hydrogen gas vent tube, then cut a huge hole through the side for the battery cables and left it open. Does anyone back fill holes? I’ve thought that polyurethane foam would be a quick way to do this, or for engine room holes there is a foam silicone that would fill the space around cables and pipes. Do you have any experience with this issue?

    • @PacificYachtSystems
      @PacificYachtSystems  2 роки тому

      Expanding foam is good way to completely fill a void after running wires. We use that solution frequently.

    I just found wire nuts in some of the junction boxes for my A/C wiring. What is the best method to join 3 #14 marine wires together? Can I use ring terminals and join them with 10/32 Stainless steel bolts with lock washers, and nuts? Then friction tape followed by plastic?

    • @PacificYachtSystems

    • @PacificYachtSystems

      The challenge is that many insulated crimp terminals have an opening at the tongue of the crimp terminal. Making the heat shrink terminal limited in value.
