I'm a huge John Wayne Fan. I own all of his movies. So, I pre-ordered this as soon as it was announced. One of Wayne's best films. Great teaming with James Stewart, who was also in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance!
Hyped to see this western. I appreciate the companies taking time to restore these classic westerns because otherwise I probably would never see them. Thanks for the review and your enthusiasm for physical media. Bravo.
Didn't grew up with Wayne's films but got a chance to watch them all a while ago, and he was good playing the Western genre. Clint Eastwood is another great performer of this genre.
John Wayne should have won an Oscar for this film!!💯💯💯 in fact... he should have gotten 3 Oscar's, he got one for true grit, the other 2 should have been for the Searchers and The last Shootist. Loved this film!!!! Very much. It means much more when real life plays in exactly what his character is going through... has more weight. And when John Wayne Tells Lauren Bacall he has Cancer.... you see her reaction?? Guarantee that was real, like a flood of memories hit her.... because Her Husband Humphrey Bogart had Cancer as well. So her reaction was definitely Genuine💯💯
Fun fact, James Stewart came out of retirement to do this movie with John Wayne. another fun fact you can still go see the house from this movie in Carson City. It is privately owned so you can only look at that outside but it’s still pretty cool.
Unfortunately his cancer was likely due to his acting role in The Conqueror. They filmed on radiated land and a number of cast and crew got cancer afterwards.
Yes, that’s a strong possibility. They also say his heavy, smoking and drinking. Didn’t help though. If I’m not mistaken, he had both lung and stomach cancer. Could be from both instances. R.I.P. Duke
I watched this and venagar 5 card stud great combo, this was my wife's favorite movie also she always liked the ceiling fan clicking in the saloon at the end
In the booklet page 28 it the original 35mm camera negative was scanned in 4K resolution negatives by paramount and was Remastered by bad princess productions, London
James Stewart continued making movies and TVM (and a miniseries) after ‘The Shootist.’ This movie was, by no means, the wrapping up of his career. Heck, he made two or three in 1978 alone. His last film (in which he did a voiceover) was in 1991.
I just ordered this from Deep Discount with other titles since it was cheaper there and they have a 10% off promo code for 3+ titles. Promo is LOONY. I get to upgrade my DVD of this movie. John Wayne is the actor I have the most films of in my collection with over 90 titles.
Wow , Did You comment on the picture quality transfer - not really and the sound I guess You maybe mentioned it was 2.0 mono. Also I believe Ron Howard had a major role in this film - I didn't hear You mention him. And I believe it was Ron Howards last movie as an actor ??
I love "The Shootist", after "True Grit" and "Rio Bravo" I'd say it's my favourite John Wayne movie. Curiously I didn't like "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" at all, I tried watching it (for the first time) a few nights ago but found it to be very, very poor indeed...after an hour I couldn't bear it anymore and had to turn it off ! I'm clearly in the minority though because that movie has an 8.1 on IMDB which is higher than "True Grit", "Rio Bravo" and "The Shootist" ! (incredible and baffling to me !) so there really is no accounting for taste. One thing I would say Ken, it didn't bother me because as I say I don't like "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" but for anyone that might be interested in watching it I couldn't believe how casually you just blew the ending for them ! 😲😞
The Shootist was a reunion of actors who had appeared with John Wayne previously: Stewart- The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Bacall -Blood Alley, Richard Boone - Big Jake, Carradine- Stagecoach, Harry Morgan - How the West Was Won, Palmer - 5 previous movies. Was John Wayne racist? Other than the content of an interview given to Playboy magazine, I don't think you can find another instance. Oh, he had 3 wives, all Hispanics.
Ken, Ron Howard made some '70s movies besides the famous Happy Days TV series. I saw them all. Eat My Dust is one of them! Check it out. We need THE ALAMO on 4K from 1970! Huge cast including John Wayne, of course.

How many Western films did he starred in? Are they available on BD? Would like to collect them. Thanks for sharing 😁

Rio Bravo. =)

I have already watched it and I'm a huge John Wayne fan

Thx for working so hard Ken! PM I actually think is better than ever ❤
Thanks for watching!
I love the Shootist. John Wayne is just so positive and secure in his killer talent ‼️😯😮
Unfortunately his cancer was likely due to his acting role in The Conqueror. They filmed on radiated land and a number of cast and crew got cancer afterwards.
The gorgeous susan hayward also got cancer during that movie IIRC

Very sad.
It’s coming from Amazon on Wednesday. Very excited about this long overdue Duke classic!
You’re gonna love it!
watched this with my Dad back in the day. That and Jaws were the reasons I got into the film biz.
Ron Howard talks about working with the Duke on this (on UA-cam)
Awesome! I know it was a dream of his to work with him.
Don Siegel, not John Siegel.
Awsome. I hadn't seen this either but the trailer looked great, so I ordered it. Love Rio Bravo, True Grit and liberty valance.
I think you’ll really enjoy it!

I still need to watch 5 card this week!

Sorry. Says on the back new 2K restoration and in the press notes. Guess it was scanned in 4K and restored in 2K.
@@midlevelmedia I know
Why wouldn't they retore it in 4K and release it that way? Money? @@midlevelmedia

Digging the buzz cut! Works for you!
Good Film. Will upgrade from my DVD. Quigley Down Under is also very good. I'll be picking that up as well.
I can’t wait to get my copy. Pre order. My impossible dream is to own every John Wayne. Currently own 10 of his movies.
Hopefully they all get decent releases.
Thanks for the awesome review! You convinced me to order it!
Great! You won’t regret it!
Probably my 4th favorite Duke film behind BIG JAKE, EL DORADO and RIO BRAVO. Nice to see plenty of special features with this release.
The features here are truly great. You’ll enjoy them.
I pre ordered this title it's in my top five Western titles

@@midlevelmedia I hope so I had this movie #17 on my top 25 of the 1970s.
Have you checked out The Searchers ? Wayne should of got an Oscar for his acting in that
That’s a big western I have not seen. Hoping to when it gets the inevitable 4K.
Was Ron Howard already making happy days with Henry winkler

Great film … glad you enjoyed it ….. loving the new haircut aswell about time you bit the bullet and shaved it 😂 (we’ve all been there)
I shave it this way every cut, I just wait too long in between cuts. lol…. Thanks for watching!
A terrific film. I pre-ordered from Arrow, but they cancelled and told me to re-order. Why? Haven't explained. And it's DON Segal, not JOHN.

Hi Ken DO you own any LASERDISC ?
Just a couple.
yet another release that should've been a 4K. Personally I refuse to buy anything other than 4K format, so I wont be getting this unfortunately.
You’re going to be missing out on a lot of great films and releases then. Js
I'm leaning that way, but, some will never be released on the 4K format due to getting the money back on it. Just my opinion.
@@midlevelmediayou're right, but Im OK with that. I dont want and truthfully have no space in the house for inferior format.
@@LeeTheVetNo, you're right about that. I'm OK with not having those movies. If they arent on 4K then thats money that be used elsewhere.
does anybody know if its region locked.
No UK release from arrow 🤬🎥
Definitely stinks.
