I Drove Through The WORST Parts Of New Hampshire. This Is What I Saw.

- The worst areas of New Hampshire are really bad. Wow!
For this episode of dashboard tours, I took i93 south from Concord, the capital of New Hampshire and headed to the city of Manchester. My goal would be to drive through one of the very few bad areas in the whole state of New Hampshire. The area I picked is in a rundown part of town just outside of downtown Manchester. But as you’ll see, bad for New Hampshire would be good for a lot of the rest of the country.
It was a late winter day, but the sun shone bright. The day was Sunday, March 21, 2021 at about 1 pm.
We’re going to begin downtown to lend some perspective. As you can see lots of people were out and about and downtown is very vibrant. Then, we’ll turn into a neighborhood that’s widely considered to be the most rundown and crime ridden in Manchester. There’s a reason people in New Hampshire call this place ManchVegas.
Here’s the route you’ll take. Again, once we get into the bad part of town you can make your own assumptions. To me, it wasn’t that bad at all, but I had just been to Philadelphia a couple days ago, so my perspective is skewed at this point. This also puts into perspective just how good a state New Hampshire is. I mean if this is one of the worst areas in the state, then they are quite lucky, I’d say.
Here is the rest of Manchester New Hampshire’s worst areas, and some of the worst areas in this entire state.

I'm from Manchester its nothing. I just watched some YT videos of Kensington Ave or whatever on Philly. Man oh man. Shooting up in front of cops no repercussions. Checkout some videos. Wild
That is an understatement!! I love visiting NH , especially North Conway. The people, scenery and laid back atmosphere, sure make the life easy
@@shakazulu5819 there's plenty of black people in Latinos here. Definitely more white people but plenty of every race
You drove right past my house! This area is clearly not the best part of Manchester but it's as affordable as it gets. Our unit is a 2 story 3-bedroom townhouse and has a private driveway and private fenced back yard with a deck. We would never be able to afford this in downtown Boston. I know because I've lived in downtown Boston. Manchester is a very livable city - not too small, not too big. We don't have the immense gridlock of the bigger cities but we're big enough to have lots of options for shopping, recreation and cultural events. And we're about an hour away from the mountains, the ocean, and Boston if you crave a big city experience.
I know my hubs family had a place in Boston back in the day(50-80’s I think) if they sold it today’s market they’d get over a million dollars for it

How much $$$
Looks like the only thing missing in Manchester is a few major sports teams like an NFL team, NBA team, NHL team, and a MLB team. That would really bring in new residents to the city. Manchester have been growing over the years.
👏
NH rocks. Just stinks that good-paying jobs can be tough to find in many areas. A ton of folks commute long distances to Mass for work, which is reasonable until winter kicks in.
With the pandemic and all, are they able to work from home
As a NH resident I will agree with you in the normal sense but due to Covid19 there's many different jobs aplenty at this time.
I think you are right.
Gets fun on old 125 in the winter 🥶
Lived in Dover,Rochester,Somersworth, and Portsmouth and some areas they showed in Manchester are quiet during the day but after 6:00 p.m. there's areas you shouldn't be in. Lived on and off in N.H. for 38 years.

@@mariooliveira6780 Akron is rough. I know a guy from UA-cam that lives in a house valued at $30k when the average house is valued at $80k there.
Can confirm. I have lived in several areas of NH off and on since 2000, but lived near Dayton from2005-2008. To quote myself when we moved back to NH, "I'd rather be homeless in NH than own a home in OH.
I was just thinking, I live in Denver CO, and as nice as it is for a big city, it's not Manchester NH ghetto nice.

This doesn't even show the worst parts of Manchester. It also looks like a ghost town, hardly anyone is out and about. This doesn't show anything even remotely "bad". This makes Manchester seem a lot nicer than it actually is.

Yeah, manchester is worse than some of the biggest "most" dangerous cities in the country now really. It's the rude, incompetent attitude of most people and the city doing nothing except making things worse. This video is the worst depiction of manch I've ever seen
Yeah…cross the river over to the west side between McGregor St & the Piscataquog River and it’s a different story. This side has rough parts, but it’s mostly chill during the daytime (save for a few places west of Chestnut St and to Elm St).
Over on the west side across the Merrimack River? Yeah, being out in the day is sketchy and while at night the city can be rough, it’s dangerous as all hell over there.
One more comment: can’t wait until you do the “bad” parts of Vermont, which are even less “bad” than this!
Vermont has some pretty bad Ghettos and is much more lenient on Drug crimes. VERMONT caters to the poor who sell the drugs and the wealthy Drug consumers and is driving the middle class who pay most of the taxes out at alarming rates. I had to leave because unless you are completely in poverty and someone else's burden or you are already wealthy you can't make it in Vermont entirely to expensive.
Vermont has some quite bad areas, but they're not in cities, they're in smaller towns... we barely have what you could consider "cities" to begin with.

@@653j521that explains a lot. Here in Miami FL, someone can rob you in broad daylight in front of a crowd of people and no one will do anything. When cops come to investigate, no one will come forward as a witness. This happened to my aunt.
Manchester native and West Side resident for most of my life. About 40 years ago the Federal Government decided that Manchester would be a refugee relocation center. During those 40 years Manchester has had thousands of refugees dumped in our city. Most have been great citizens who have prospered and are a great part of the community. Going in the less favorable sections of the city and you will find the refugees and others who have not thrived. Overall though Manchester is thriving with high tech start ups and a young and growing population. You are near my house at the start of the video. Let me know of you come back again, I'd love to get together.
As a new Hampshire resident, I would not clasify that worst area of New Hampshire. I see well kept homes and tenement houses very well kept. I see no graffiti. I know this area , because I worked one time in this area as a freelance electrician. People paid their bills. Hence there are no worst areas of New Hampshire. In comparison to other states, i.ll take this area over any other area. The only problem I see with the state as a whole is high property taxes, high electric rates, and the severe lack of rail public transportation.
I have lived in NH my entire life and before covid worked at the homeless shelter on Manchester st in Manchester. While it's by no means Lawrence, MA or NY city as far as crime goes, the amount of shootings, police stand offs and violent crime in general in Manchester, Nashua, and even Concord, NH has risen significantly along with the homeless rates (families and working people, not just addicts like everyone assumes). People can't afford to live here. It's crazy.
Laconia is bad too, born and lived my entire life in this state and I'm afraid I'll have to leave my home one day bc I can't afford to stay and there's not enough housing anywhere.
Its 97% addicts, 2% mentally ill, and 1% that actually work but are having a hard time getting housing. And dont tell me any different, i deal with them daily. Btw, if you cant afford to live some where, you move to a place that you can afford
If people can't afford their rent, why can't they receive assistance and Section 8? I have family in Manchester on Section 8 and as long as they're working, qualifying has never been an issue.
That’s because people from Massachusetts keep going to NH.
Manchester is easily becoming almost bad as Lawrence as much of shame as it is all the fentanyl comes from Lawrence and the 2 cities and very connected
Nice video, it's interesting to see another channels perspective!
Didn't know there were "worst" parts of this state, lol.

There definitely are. Berlin, West Manchester, Somersworth, and Rochester for example are some other pretty bad places.

You’ve clearly never been to Berlin
I grew up in NY and lived in Arizona for 6 years. During the pandemic, I moved to Manchester, NH. This isn't the bad spots, there are homeless and heroine addicts about a block from downtown. Thats pretty much it though. NH is a wonderful place minus the cost of housing and having to commute for jobs. Also, there is a massive housing shortage. Don't move there unless you have an apartment lined up... You'll be homeless. I really loved it there and was pleasantly surprised. Great people, great place, and surprisingly, great food!
I agree Kevin
civil structure has crashed. vast mid class lost
You forgot, "Great skiing".
The housing crisis is real here! Cost of living is very high as well. But a beautiful place to live. Have been here all my life.
I have lived here all my life and believe me there are some pretty bad areas. Homelessness is bad and not confined to a block. They have extended to other areas. They hit the downtown area on elm st shooting up drugs right in plane sight. Urinated and fecal matter on a daily basses around most businesses. One homeless person did it right in front of children caught on security camera! Mayor does nothing!
You didn’t visit the “tree streets” in Nashua. As bad as they are it’s still 10x better than a bad part of Boston. I love living in NH
Yep. I wouldn't walk in the tree streets at night and I'm from Nashua.

I was a New York City cop and moved to NH from 2000 to 2006 after retiring from the job. I lived in Bedford which is a suburb of Manchester, and my new job had me traveling throughout the entire state. There are some poor small towns but I never felt scared or threatened in any part of this state, and I know what I am looking at. NH is a great place to live and raise a family. It has beaches, mountains, lakes, and is close to Boston. Its just the cold winters that are a bit of a bummer. But if you like snow then you cant beat it. Its one of the best kept secrets in the US. Live free of die!!!
Live free (or) die!!!...opps
My best friend lived in Bedford until about ten years ago when he moved to San Diego. Bedford is a nice town. He is thinking about moving back to NH.
Take this ride on a friday in june. Would give you a much better perspective on the bad areas. It's not the buildings and neighborhoods that make it that way. But the people that live within
Your summary at the beginning is spot on. I’ve lived in 11 states and NH was the nicest overall. Sure, it suffers from the same social issues as everywhere else - only less so. It’s a state where the worst parts are basically any of the low end apartments that have a Section 8 component. Not one area is dangerous to walk through, unlike what you see in most other states. It’s a really nice state, though the climate may be too cold for some.
Your description is a Manchester in the 90s. Not like that now. Homeless and crime goes up every year.
Try going to the white mtn. area, Rye beach, the seacoast, Winnipausauke or any of the lakes. This state is God's country!!😃
Manchester is def getting worse. With all the democrats coming it will be Chicago before you know it.
@@ericgilman6170 crime has been going down for years
@@tze1204I didn't look up actual stats. We don't live in a bad neighborhood but in the the last 3 years Its changed. Within the last 3 months I've had ask 2 different homeless people not to sleep in our apartment buildings stairwell. The tenant below us threatened a neighbor with a gun Had a standoff with the swat team for 8 hours,Had my bike stolen out of our garage, and had our car broken into last week . Most of these things don't show up on crime reports.
I was just there Nick about 2 weeks ago. I'm looking to retire in that area. I found some pretty rough sections that were off of your route a bit but still close to it. There's a section where it's mostly apartments and multi family houses. There's also alot of BAD graffiti in some places. We stayed downtown at that Tru Hotel. The neighborhood at night is pretty quiet and they have a great taco spot. Sketchy people are out creeping as well! Thanks for this because it helps me alot. It's inspiring! Take care!

Good to see NH, great video Nick. 👍👍👍👍
Ok DrL
Very good video. The on-street parking really narrows down the road. Must be a mess after a big snow storm.
We have blinking lights at the street lights for NO PARKING BANS before, during, and immediately after a major snow storm.
It's a heads up before being towed.
They also adopted an Odd/Even parking( park on the side of street on the day that is odd or even number by midnight) streets from November to April...or something like that, to make the streets easier to drive through. 🚗
No parking on the street after 11 p.m. From December 1st through April 1st
yup
Yeah we've got the blinking lights to signal parking bans but people ignore them and leave their cars on the road anyway. There isn't enough parking to get them off the road, so what are they supposed to do? I live on a tiny side street and our neighbors constantly leave their cars out cause they have no off street parking. The plow can barely get around them and it makes the streets a mess.
Enjoyed this interesting episode dash board tours of this beautiful small city. Thanks for sharing Nick n Sage ! 👍🇺🇲

I live in a "not very good" neighborhood in a mid-sized college town in New Hampshire. Looks similar to what you've depicted in this video. I freely go walking in the neighborhood and I've never been harassed or felt unsafe. Neighbors are friendly, although some of them may have a substance abuse problem that I hope they're able to recover from. I live in this "less than" neighborhood because the rent is more affordable. For many of us, it comes down to living where the cost of housing is affordable.
Nashua?
Keene?
I was about to say Plymouth. Prob keen
@@waynv1835 no way it’s Durham def Keene or Nashua or Plymouth
I grew up in Keene and the problem with the cost of rent there is specifically due to having the college downtown. There are a lot of less than lovely neighborhoods around the college where the landlords get a fortune for a ghetto quality apartment because they don't rent them to just one person. Three or four students will all go in together on a large apartment that goes for say $2000/month, I'm just using a round number here for an example. If there are four kids living there that comes to $500/mo each which is cheap for them and they don't really care what the total monthly rent is. But then landlords that have apartments away from the college look at what these crappy apartments are going for downtown and say to themselves if they are getting this for that then I should be able to get lots more for my place that is in a much better neighborhood and in way better condition. This ends up making it really difficult for families or single people to be able to afford to live in Keene because the rent in nice areas is through the roof.
I work all over Manchester. You really didn't drive through the bad parts.

This driving tour reminds me of two places that I've been before. The historic district of Louisville, Ky; called "Old Louisville"; and the neighborhoods around the beachtown of South Haven, Michigan. Both neighborhoods have a mix of houses that range from plain apartment buildings to 100 year old ornate mansions, almost zero houses less than the national average home price. The roads could use some maintenance, but other than that it looks like some of the nicest places I've personally ever lived.
West side is the worst. This is the east. Five blocks north you'll find million plus dollar homes. Although, even west Manchester is better than a lot of places.
I used to Travel Through Manchester on I 93 A LOT. ON FRIDAY NIGHTS MANCHESTER USED TO BE REALLY HAPPENING. This was over 20 years ago. Do they still party hard in the city?
The roads looked good, the homes looked new or well kept, and the cars all seemed decent. It didn’t look too bad from what I was expecting. Even the bad areas still have good sized homes compared to the UK. I don’t think you’d want to live in a home in the U.K., you’d think it would be too small.

Funniest thing to me is that you literally drove by my house in this video. I have lived in this neighborhood since 2004 as a kid grew up in the same place now I'm 24. It didn't used to be like it was today I remember I used be outside all the time with other kids hanging out playing at that park. Over the years there was an influx of crime that sprawled out of no where my parents car was broken into over night which is crazy because it was a well lit area with tons of people around. Every time I locked up one of my bikes up they would come and tear open the lock and steal the bike. Moving to NC soon but Manchester is not as bad as some other places I have visited in recent years.
So why choose NC? Would you say it's safer overall than NH? Considering moving to NH in the future but now i'm not so sure.
@@1supermiguel I primarily choose North Carolina due to the Rent being a lot more affordable. unfortunately that's another issue with NH is the proximity of Boston and it being New England, increases rent and housing costs and availability. I plan on moving back to NH it has so much to offer for it's size like the white mountains, trails, a shore line with a well known beach "Hampton". I personally would not recommend living in the Manchester area! I would recommend the outskirts like Hooksett, Bedford, Goffstown and many more. If you like more isolation then you can consider the northern part of the state especially if your more in tune with nature and the outdoors it's gorgeous in the spring and summer with plenty of things to do.
@@AcTua98I’ve been looking into NC too. I’m in NH as I type this. Here’s the thing though, rents are rising up in NC because EVERYONE wants to move there. And it’s dangerous because of the laws or lack thereof. It seems like you’re fcked no matter what you do or where you go in the USA.
Ok, but you went during the winter when it's cold! Was there yesterday and there was definately a drug deal happening right on the main road and people obviously on some serious drugs walking the streets and yelling at cars to try and get money! It does get worse than this in Manchester. Everyone hibernates in the winter in New England! It may be sunny, but it's likely still in the 30s or 40s!
30s and 40s are warm for a winter day in New England.
My thoughts exactly. It's a different drive on a June night. But I still think it's probably better then most other urban areas in the world.
I’m in Manchester as I type this. None of that happens. You’re over exaggerating. Idk why people like you obsess over trying to make a place seem bad. Do you think you’ll be viewed as tough if the place you’re from is tough? If so, that’s pathetic. 😂😂😂
bro... when the video starts and you taking my exit... lol
This proves that the United States of America can become a World Leader in Insect Farming!
Thank you for sharing helpful and informative videos!
I've lived in Manchester my whole life. You drove past some of me and my families old homes. The places you showed are by no means the worst part of the city.
WOW! So thats the "bad" part of town? Could have fooled me! The majority of places are clean, and not a single place was boarded up with plywood. Would be interesting to see what a Friday or Saturday night looks like after the sun went down.
He should have gone north and south instead of east and west . My wife grew up in a city in the Philippines, and parts of Manchester that he didn’t cover scare the hell out of her . Mainly Union St between Bridge and Valley streets.
@@HVACMD2002 plus it's basically winter now had he driven through here in the summer the streets would be filled with people I don't drive through Manchester without my gun especially in the summer
@@justinvachon3839 me too. A trip to Cremeland on a Friday night and I am definitely packing.
A lot of the abandoned places burn down; these are mostly old "triple decker" wood-framed tenements built well over 50 years ago, so that's why Manch doesn't seem as blighted as other cities.
@@HVACMD2002 I went through the roughest of Manch, day and night. It's got it's problems. But compare it to places like little East St Louis MO, or Highland Park MI, Gary Indiana, East Cleveland Ohio, etc. Manchester looks like luxury. Actually I can name many cities that are far more scarier than Manchester
Was hoping for more of an edited video w more narration as I like to LISTEN to these while working on side projects.
It looks pretty nice there... clean and no trash strewn around.
I want to visit New Hampshire soon. Londonderry or Derry areas
You will love it
If Los Angeles looked liked this, I would be a Happy Camper.. We have 4 foot high trash where I am at.
Cold winters scare a lot of people away. Paradise is attractive to a lot of people and therefore creates hell.
Wow!! 😲 4 feet of trash?! That sounds horrible!! There isn't enough room to dispose of all the trash we make. I'm sorry to hear that it is like that.
One pet peeve of mine about Northern cities that I cannot stand is everyone has to park on the street because people either don't have a driveway or it's not big enough to accommodate it's residents, much less any visitors vehicles.
Where is the camera located? It picks up wind so the windows are down or is it mounted on the outside windshield?
Haha😂I waited for the bad parts and was disappointed lol!!! As a born and raised Oregonian I would take there “bad” parts over Oregon’s “bad” any day. Honestly other then the pavement not being in great shape, the area doesn’t seem bad! We plan to be moving to New Hampshire in summer or 2024 so excited 🎉
Exactly!!
Please do not move here. We have a massive housing shortage.
Seems like it's not bad but it's cuz the cold keeps people away it's a different story when it's warm ! I have autism and this area has been the worst place to live for me than even Chelsea, east Boston, trailer park next to suffix downs in mass ! I must get away from here asap !
It's really about what you are doing. If you are positive and living well you will do fine. If you're an addict you will have a hard time.
The pavement gets bad in the winter thanks to fluctuating temperatures. It gets warm, the snow melts. Then night time comes and the water freezes and splits the roads apart. It is a general New England problem.
Manchester may have some of the worst parts in NH but it's overall not bad. The worst would be either Rochester or Berlin.
Back in the early '80s, I drove to Rochester, NH to buy a '69 Corvette from a guy for $3500. After getting there, he wouldn't sell it to me because I wasn't 18 y/o.
Nashua, aka Trashua, aka Nashghanistan.
I live right outside of Rochester in Farmington. Just alot of poor people and drugs. Not much else
There are areas in the smaller towns or out in the woods that are way worse than Manchester, but they get a pass because in NH "Manchester = bad"
I think a lot of people don't grasp that different neighborhoods of a city can vary wildly. Manchester has some crappy neighborhoods, but it also has some pretty nice neighborhoods too. It's all about what part of the city you're in.
I've never been to Berlin but based on what little I know about it, it seems terribly depressing.
You drove right by my house. I can't. 🤣
Nooooo
Wave 👋 next time ❤️
You picked a pretty good area of the city to be honest, there is just bad pockets of the city is what we call them normally about 5-10 blocks at a time and a lot of people just avoid those “pockets” but the root you took is honestly pretty nice, parts of the east side over by central high can get really ruff in the wrong neighborhoods same on the west side but like I said it’s just certain neighborhoods but you are correct the majority of Manchester is a pretty nice place just alot of places you may not want to be on hot summer days lol
It looks like a couple of places needed the bushes trimmed - the horror!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
You rock, Nick. Planning to relocate to NH. It’s a beautiful place. 💜💜💜💜💜
You should!

What is the camera that you used? Pretty cool.
iPhone 12
Every place has its best and worst parts. Including the worst part of New Hampshire you show. But after all this is life. Btw thanks for sharing
Compared to the worst places in the UK it seems everyone lives in a mansion
They are multi family houses. They were mansions back when Manchester was a thriving mill city but now they’ve been split into 2-3 family units.
These are all multi-family apartments, usual size of units is 800-1,200 sq ft. And because they’re conversions, the insides can be very strange.
When does it start? Still waiting... 😆
I had to play Snoop Dogg in my head to get the right feel for it, and to cover up the sound of the birds chirping, lol!
Did you enter the bad area after you stopped recording? Cause I was waiting for you to drive through the supposedly bad area, but never saw it.
Manchester has actually gone downhill in the last few years but it's still a pretty safe place. I'd also vote Berlin and Rochester as worse.
Berlin isn't even bad. Just like many other US towns it does have a drug problem. But I like it, it just need more of a visual fix up, which they're working on right now. As for Roch, it's not bad either, on an NH point of view, it's like hell
I lived in Manchester my whole life and what I've learned is that is has crime just like any other city but on a small scale. The people who live here and complain about it being bad are people that don't and aren't going anywhere else. Catch my drift?
Go there at night around the Lake Ave. And Union st area. Thank you for the video. I lived there for many yrs. Live in Oklahoma now
Well, I guess every state needs a WORST and my man, Nick, will find 'em! The dashboard quest continues...
In New Hampshire, overgrown grass is a bad neighborhood, either that or the libertarian community there says I’m growing my grass long and no guberment going to tell me what to do.
I live in what you called manchvegas and I can tell you that you drove through the better part of Manchester you didn't even go through the bad parts at all
Most of this city has actually improved with time. The town grew to support large water powered mills along the Merrimac river and suffered as jobs went south in the Depression and overseas later on leaving a good deal of urban decay. Empty factories have been torn down or re-purposed to good effect.
It still looks nice to be fair, cool!
