  • Senior Conservator Mrs Jin Xian Qiu has spent the last 43 years mastering the traditional Chinese method of mounting a hanging scroll. Watch as she prepares and hangs two works by Chinese artist Qu Leilei - a process that takes a whole year.
The works - 'Journey' and 'Lei Feng' - are both created using ink on traditional xuan paper and have been donated to the British Museum by the artist.
Qu Leilei (b. 1951) is a calligrapher, painter and author. He was one of the founding members of the Stars Group alongside his contemporaries Ma Desheng, Wang Keping, Huang Rui, Li Shuang, Zhong Acheng and Ai Weiwei.
The works will be on display in Room 91a at the British Museum from November to December 2015.
Qu Leilei will be discussing contemporary Chinese art with Shen Kuiyi and Ma Desheng at the British Museum on Friday 13 November 2015 at 18.30.

This is an actual legitimate art, the wet mounting of scrolls. I'm doing Japanese Calligraphy and have tried this once or twice. It is extremely difficult to maintain the integrity of the original artwork. A risky process.

+Andriy Predmyrskyy Agreed. I've mounted a couple of scrolls in my time and it is an art form. Most scrolls nowadays use massive shortcuts with self-adhesive silks and backing papers that reduce the whole process into some factory assembly line. You can tell the difference in quality between those that are done that way and those that are done traditionally. As Qu Leilei (whom I met once before in person) said in the video, 30% painting, 70% mounting. It cannot be skimped.

+Andriy Predmyrskyy I actually have a Japanese scroll from the 40's hanging in my room complete with decorative ceramic weights.

I kept hearing how the making of scroll paintings was an art on its own and it's only now that I realize just how true that is.

I've read about how this is done. I've always wanted to try this or watch it being done. I never thought I would.
    but
I am so thrilled to see it done!
Thank you so much for letting this be filmed and posting it where it can be found.

Fascinating the complexity behind something so apparently simple.

I wish they had used red silk mount for the soldier picture, I think it would have enhanced the aesthetic of the artwork.
