I can't keep responding to comments saying the same thing so I'm putting it here for the final time before I lose my bloody sanity 😂😂😂🤦🏼♀️ I didn't miscount "wee"s. If I watched while editing and knew I meant to say it I didn't count it, the whole point of it was to see how many times I unintentionally said "wee" without actively thinking about it. I could have put "unintentional wee counter" on the screen but it wasn't going to fit and also I'd look like a bit of a knob.

oiMarkusv that’s hardly surprising it’s due to the Scots Irish / Ulster Scots and their influence of the culture in Northern Ireland Scots dialect and slang is in use btw Scots dialect isn’t used all over Scotland mainly in use Edinburgh and parts of the highlands but once you get to Aberdeen and the northeast it changes to Doric a different dialect entirely ! I’ve got a few Ulster Scots ancestors in my family .

I’m from Texas (family came over from Scotland like 3 generations ago) and I grew up with the phrase blather. Though it’s more of a negative. You might hear someone say “Quit your blatherin’ ” or “She’s just blatherin’ “. Like talking nonsense or complaining. So not exactly the same but I bet it came from y’all’s ‘blether’.

I'm fae Paisley and i've learnt since being in the USA that a lot of what i say isn't understood. rank, numpty, jobby, bevvy, haud yer weesht, trolley, lorry, all of these get blank looks from the americans. i also use scran and wee a lot. the only thing they seem to understand is bawbag! and i have actually met a woman whose name is 'fanny' omg! i really need to come home!!

Surprisingly, that's not an unusual name in a few places. Just seems strange to us because of how we'd use the word haha!

eneurian erwin I would totally know all of these as I have a lot of Scottish pals of both genders as well from Inverness , Aberdeen and the capital as well and just various spots around the country I’ve even used some myself called my niece a numpty a time or two when she’s being silly because as I understood it means you’re being an idiot but the lovable kind , kind of similiar to what my Irish cousins would use the slang term muppet for same thing or in Australian terms a galah is what we use here !!

New to your channel. I really loved this video! So in high school, I became friends with an exchange student from Scotland. He use to call me a bawbag or wee bawbag. Everyone one loved the word and meaning so much that 20 years later, all my high school friends call me Bawbag. Wonderful!

In Australia we have speak of the devil as well. Don't know if other places have added the extra saying to it if the person shows up or calls. "speak of the devil" "and he shall appear". Which is usually followed by to the person being talked about "your ears must be burning".

Speaking of, "blather" is used in America to describe pointless, chattering talk.

"Is yer cats deed?", and the connection with short trousers is a humerus reference to a flag being flown at half mast when someone important dies. Sometimes cat can be exchanged with another animal, for example "Is yer budgie deed?" is more common in North Lanarkshire. I'm not sure if it's true, but it's as good an explanation as any I've heard :)

I’d say Peely Wally is mostly used to describe me in the summer time. Particularly by a good buddy of mine.
There’s two ways I categorize people with pale skin.
You either have ghost (pale) or tomato (sunburn red) skin.
Kirstie, I grew up from 1980-1995 in the Mt Florida/Battlefield/Langside areas and just wondering if you still use the word "Midden" (bins/trash)
So I have been in Ayrshire since 1995 and I still sometimes use the word midden.
Wee is one I use all the time, I think mostly everyone does in Scotland.
Also still some of the phrases I use and some admittedly do come from Ayrshire and are not used anywhere else in Scotland.
"Yer cats are deed" or "Did yer cat die, aye?" You pretty much explained that one
"trapdoor" (when someone's troosers are open)
"Gien it laldy" which you already explained
"That will be chocolate" (I'm not doing that, or that is just not happening)
"Gone ben that in the kitchen" (get that in the kitchen)
"dink" (the sound made when someone clunks (hits) you over the head with a glass beer bottle)
"ken" (know) I use that all the time
"Ony/Onyway/Onywhere" (any/anyway/anywhere)
"Bolt ya rocket" (get away from me you idiot)
"Dinnae fash" (Don't worry/Don't Fuss)
"eegit" (idiot)
"gadz a F***" ( yuck with a swear word, sometimes just say gadz)

My dad was born in Clackmannanshire and he used peely wally a LOT when I was growing up. (along with a million other things o' course) :)

Kirstie, I just found you on youtube and I enjoyed this 10 used Scottish slang words. I already have Beauty Creep and Wee Scottish Lass as friends, but I added you, too. I have one phrase that a friend of mine used to say a lot when she lived in the US, but she's been living back in her home town outside of Stirling for about 20 years now. That phrase is "och an aye". What does that mean? I am a dumb American with a Scottish heritage, but I've only found out in the last couple of years. So I'm trying my best to learn some phrases that might make me survive in case I ever come to visit. She used to tell her husband to go and buy a "wee buri'oo" which I learned she was hungry for burritos. I miss her saying that. Well, that's it for now. Just watched your video and I have to say it was hilarious hahaha I used to live in bonnie Scotland 5 years ago during my Erasmus period at Uni. I've always heard it as 'yer budgie's deid' meaning your trousers are too short. As far as I know it comes from flag's being flown at half mast when someone dies, i.e. your trousers are halfway up your legs
I knew the reference to flags flying at half mast I just never understood why a cat was involved or if it was random haha!

It works out well. In Scotland the people, not the monarchy or the government. are legally sovereign.
The commonly accepted definition of just who are, "The people of Scotland", is - anyone, of any colour, creed or country of origin who is mainly resident in Scotland, is registered to vote in Scottish Elections and who pays their tax in Scotland.
That was the definition used to say who was allowed to vote in the Scottish Independence Referendum of 2014 and I'm sure it will be the definition used when our First Minister calls the next promised referendum after this Westminster idiotic, so called, Brexit.
I say so called because Westminster does not rule Britain it only rules the United Kingdom parts of Britain. There are four other non-UK legislatures in Britain - The Republic of Ireland is one. The three Crown, (not Westminster), Dependencies of the Bailiwicks of Jersey & Guernsey and the Isle of Man are not governed by Westminster but are all parts of Her Majesty's personal United Kingdom.

Not necessarily “slang” in the strictest terms but I visited Scotland this summer (American) and learned from some Glaswegians that the word “cunt” can actually be used as a term of endearment in the right social context, and that really blew my mind. Only the Scots ha 🏴

Hi "Ya cats are deed" here in New Zealand we say "you pants are at half mast" I believe is from the tradition of putting the flag at half mast when someone has died. assuming that "deed" means dead. I can't find out what "cats" means. any one have an idea. in my family we use blathering as talking to much.and if something was damaged or broken it was "away". my lot came over here in 1885 and the slang is now part of the language .

Never said it was mate 😂 it's origins are from "speak ae The Beal" which is Scottish. Kinda like how other countries serve pizza but it's still Italian yunno 👀🍕

Quite a few of these I'd class as insults (As funny as the Avon one may be) and I tend not to insult people of things very often so of course they're not going to be among my most used words 😂 Messages I use a little but not as much as others, and batter, I just think of batter as in cooking haha!
Yer da sells Avon basically means he’s gay,, fanny means gay or like a pussy(so like a scardie cat that also is Scottish and it means ur scared) a piece is a sandwich so like a piece nd ham,, mongo means stupid as does gobi,, cow means slut and batter means beat up or fight( another word for batter is smash) hope that helps u

Hey! Andrew, there are more people of Scottish descent in the USA than there are in Scotland. In case you do not know it - the Scottish Declaration of Arbroath is the basis of the USA Declaration of Independence. Most of the signatories to that USA declaration were Scottish born
