      @@stgodless I would love to see a comparison on that too. I've been using Darktable for a few years, and I get good results from it. Fewer bells and whistles than Lightroom, but I would consider it a reliable basic app for the purpose. And for the price (free) you'd be hard-pressed to find better.

    Great point made about RAW being future-proof, but as for me personally, I realized that life is too short to edit every single image I take including photos from the past, I better use the time to take more photos or live more moments worth photographing. You definitely should be nominated for and finally win an OSCAR in edutainment films for a bunch of aspects: Extremely informative, easy to understand even for beginners, explanations supported by depictions and notations that burn unforgetably into the brain, spiced with a lot of subtle humour, and much more...
    Thank you Wolf for all your efforts that make the world of photography in many aspects a better one!
    Finally every single picture is a window to the soul of its creator: The motif, composition, choice of parameters and editing makes the photographer's points of interests and moods visible. And with your help you're enabling the beginners as well as the advanced to make these windows as precise as possible.
    And by the way (as an advanced beginner) I'm highly interested in learning about the comparison Lightroom vs. Capture One, as I'm owning a Lightroom subscription and due to some references of other professional photographers towards Capture One I'm thinking about subscribing this programm as well IF it's adding important features to somebody like me who is eager to improve editing skills.

    Good video, made it very easy to understand. I am not a pro photographer, just a newbie amateur. I found myself too many times spending a lot of time editing in lightroom, only trying to make the edited raw to look like the jpeg my camera had already downloaded to my phone. So, to me it was just a lot of time wasted to get to what I already had. That is why I stopped shooting RAW. Maybe if some day I have a lot of time in my hands when I retire I will get back to shooting RAW, but for now I just shoot JPEG. If you are a professional photographer then absolutely, you should shoot in RAW.

    • @wolfamri
      @wolfamri  11 місяців тому

      Thank you so much for your feedback, Luis! I have to agree. If time is limited, then jpg often is the better option. However, did you know that Lightroom and others have an auto function? That might help you too. But in the longrun with AI conquering cameras, things will change in that regard too 🤷‍♂️

    Great coverage of RAW vs JPEG! My first digital camera was a Kodak 1mp in 1996. Not the greatest pictures, but it sure was fun! Nobody had seen a digital camera, so it was quite a novelty. $1,500 for a one megapixel camera! The one thing in this video that concerned me was when you showed the external hard drive. I put all of my photos on a RAID drive setup. Hard drives are DEFINITELY gonna go bad. With a RAID setup, I won't lose my files if that happens. I just ran across some old photos today in an email I sent several years ago. I would really be heartbroken if I ever lost those originals. File organization is also a very important part of storage. I'm babbling off-track. You know your stuff! I hope you converted some RAW shooters, for those who need more than JPEG offers. I always shoot both. Thanks!

    • @wolfamri
      @wolfamri  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks, Miley. Wow, 1mpix 😮. You are really an early adopter.
      Regarding backups. I don’t have a raid because I have so much data. Plus: I want backups from my backups. If My house burned down or the computer and everything got stolen, a raid wouldn’t help me much. And having raids for every of my roughly 20 hard drives would cost me a fortune. That’s why I buy cheap but double. The second version is stored with a relative and updated “regularly”.

      May I ask what you pay? For me the cloud wouldn’t really work because I have so much data, and I always like to pay a one time fee (like for harddrives). There are just so many subscription costs these days.

    I have been taking photos for 40 years but only just moving to RAW. This is a brilliant explanation of the differences both technical and practical. By far the best I have found on UA-cam it even answered my question on should I keep the original RAW files. One question remains though. Thoughts on quality level when saving JPEG versions? I download to a laptop and then to a large screen iPad Pro which I use as a “photo” album.
    Again, thanks for the amazing tutorial.

    • @wolfamri
      @wolfamri  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your great feedback, Ken. That's a little difficult to answer. I hope I'm not being too complicated:
      Saving a jpg will compress the image, so try to find areas that are similar in color and brightness and combine them to one big area. That saves space. The lower quality you save, the more that happens. The only reason why we do that, is not about quality, but more about saving filesize. So if you have enough storage space, save the biggest quality.
      Particularly when you reopen and resave the file (maybe after editing), it will again look for areas that it can combine and these big areas will become even bigger. After a while you start seeing these areas very easily - and that's what is called jpg artifacts. You usually want to avoid these.
      Rereading that, I hope it is not confusing you more than it helps 🤣

    Detailed, thanks! I mostly use Jpeg because post processing is a pain. I am not a Pro, I don't need perfection. However, recently I have been using jpg+raw in case a photo needs help. Sometimes with landscape photos they can be improved. My Panasonic camera let's me process raw to jpg in-camera so I can make some basic edits on the go.
    I would be interested to know the differences between raw editing apps. Which you recommend, etc... 🙂

    Enjoyed the walk through the differences and advantages of JPEG v RAW. One thing I'd point out is that the RAW v JPG differences in processing aren't necessarily very different. On my Olympus E-M1 Mark II can shoot 60 fps at 20 MP full resolution in JPG or RAW and there is only a second or two time difference in the clearing the buffer with the apprpriate SD card. I think with current computing power it comes down to how the maker decides to employ technology in terms of CPU and memory to optimise various functions. Subscribed!

    Re getting it right in camera. When I move around and shoot handheld, I prefer RAW since the light can change in an instant, as subjects move between shadow and sunlight. I don't have the time to fiddle with white balance right then and there.

      I totally agree. Time on location sometimes is extremely precious. On the computer you have much more time. If you cannot edit today, do it tomorrow or next week. But if you can’t trigger that shutter button on location when the time is right, you lost the opportunity.

    Excelent video and very well explained! Still. I got a question - I'm using a Nikon D5300 to take pictures and I used to shot RAW (14 bt) + JPEG (fine quality), on site (what I do is landscape photography).
    But at home, when I open the RAW files in Lightroom Classic, on my computer, they looks very very similar with the JPEG files, before any editing. I toook maybe more than 400 files, and all of them (I can say all), are very very similar with the JPEG generated by the camera. Never I had the differences in your example.
    Is the camera so ggod than it produces very quality JPEG files? Or do I something missout, some Lightroom settings maybe, and what I actually see in the lightroom (even the RAW file is open, no doubht about it) is not the original RAW (flat, totally different thant the jpeg..)? Thx

    • @wolfamri
      @wolfamri  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks, Ionut. I can imagine two reasons: 1. you don’t have any picture styles or dynamic range optimizing set in camera and 2. your default lightroom import setting is already improving the raw file a lot (not very likely though).

    • @ionutvlad
      @ionutvlad 3 роки тому +1

    *I'm for RAW any day of the week!* Just dreaming cameras grow horsepower so that we could edit the RAWs right away like we do in mobile devices. As Tony Northrup fantasized, no reason not to have, say, Android\iOS right in the camera. Touchscreens are there, so it would unleash an unimaginable possibilities, including not only editing, but also sharing and even securing! While phones can not embed large sensors and lenses, real cameras can easily allow space for powerful processors and memory to operate any OS.

    • @wolfamri
      @wolfamri  3 роки тому +1

      Paul, the new Zeiss camera has ZX1 already has Lightroom built in. But I really prefer to edit on a computer. Even an iPad is way to small for me 😂. But technology has very few limits. I remember my first PC in 1992. 240MB harddrive 😂😂😂.The speed of innovation is mindblowing!

    • @PaulKretz
      @PaulKretz 3 роки тому

      @@wolfamri We'll see what comes out of it. Not sure the progress goes on if only the likes of Zeiss, Leica or Hasselblad implement it. I believe, when major selling players (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, etc.) choose this way, then we start to catch up after phones. Yeah, I remember the colourful black and orange screen with Norton Commander and the only entertainment was tetris 😃

    • @voxorox
      @voxorox 3 роки тому

      Technology will move forward, BUT whatever they can cram into a camera, we'll still be able to cram even more into a PC. It's true today and will still be true tomorrow. When it moves to AI-assisted processing, the computer's AI will be more robust than the camera's.
      In-camera editing would be handy for news photographers, though, no doubt.

    • @PaulKretz
      @PaulKretz 3 роки тому

      @@voxorox No doubts. But modern horsepowers of mobile devices are already more than enough for almost any editing (RAW photos to say the least). And considering it's much easier to share with soc.nets than from PC... I guess it's quite a rival.
