- Ever wonder whether you should be tuning on the street or on the dyno?
We get asked this question by both tuners and guys who want their car tuned. There is a simple answer. However, it is important to understand the strengths and weaknesses of both methods to be able to fully explain which is better. So, we turned this great debate into a Tech Tuesday so you know what to consider and what to discuss with customers.

Dyno Tuning most of the time are only for straight line speed but Street Tuning is for the ones who are very experience and wants to achieve endurance for the engine
On the street, there is a somewhat effective way to see improvements. Virtual Dyno. But you need to be very strict and disciplined on how you do and log your runs.
Yes you do. Thanks for your comment.
And with the draggy 😁
i think dyno its the main spot you tune a car and after you test it on the street to see any detail you want to fix and thats it.. both needed ofc :) nice video guys!
The track is also a very valuable tuning method. Sort of a mix of dyno/street because you get actual numbers (MPH) to indicate hp changes but you have less chance of hitting another car, you can't get a ticket, and if you break than typically getting towed or put on a trailer is a lot easier.
Great point!
4:45 - but use the same dyno'. Using different dyno's can give quite different results due to calibration, correction and operator variations.
Very true.
I did my ve table on the street just driving around and running out my lower gear to populate the table getting on the highway. I don't have to break the speed limit and it increased my driveability. The wideband is just after my y-pipe and the cable is held to the door with some magnetic clamps I made. Laptop sits in the passenger seat with someone holding it and just updating me on unfilled spots. I so the same thing with any other vehicle. After I'm done, I have a flush mount bolt for the O2 bung that I weld in place. Any thing I can change, I'm open to.
HP tuners for data logging and Virtual Dyno, they both work good together. Then verify and/or fine tune on the Dyno.
I was just gonna comment and saw this. When data logged correctly, virtual dyno is scary accurate.
Street tuning is the most fine accurate..for me...on the dyno they can modify the dyno to show more numbers...they dont tell you that..
Perfect discussion....
A common conversation at the HQ. We just had to do it. Thanks for watching!
In desperate need of a way to drop IATs in a 6.2 hellcat living in Fl it spikes to average 145 and then sounds like it’s starving at idle just enough to sound like a intermittent mis yet no code appears. Cars stock with a catch can and mid muffler delete. Was thinking of a jlt cold air intake but not really sure it is worth it and even then it won’t help that much. I’ve changed the spark plugs and none looked bad or failed all within gap spec it makes no cents. Was thinking the catch can was causing a vacuum leak around the PCV head seal adapter for the hose looks like it’s starting to leak with a black grease ring. Any ideas?
I personally feel it's more accurate on a Dyno, although I'm currently rebuilding my engine bc I just recently had my engine blown on the dyno. Now that I'm rebuilding my car my mechanic I wanting to do a street tune over a dyno tune. I'm on the fence of what I should do and would really appreciate some feedback.
Possible to initiate boost quicker along the rpm?
Hello! On the street my car made around 440 on the street tune, if i want to put it on a dyno, would hp difference would it make ?
Another quality video! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching and for the support!
About street tuning. I need to use the gear more close to 1:1 gear ratio when wide open throttle or can use any gear?
I’d prefer street tuning. Sure, you can load up the dyno to simulate the road, but I doubt you can load it up the same way the weight of the vehicle will on the real road surface. Planning a S10 LS swap in the future and I’d just have someone else drive the truck while tuning it. Just my thoughts.
Your thoughts are welcomed :) Thanks for sharing!
One of you mentioned you were from Houston. Do you have a place here that you recommend?
Dyno can't take into consideration the vehicle inertia and weight transfer but is a good tool to get good wot fuel and base timing maps dialed in then take it to the street and yrackbfor clean up and drivability tuning.
Good point. Thanks for sharing!
Is it legal lol my answer is i don't fukn Cares.
How much is a average dyno & what do you need?
good video
Thanks for watching!
Does the same rules apply to motorcycles?
On a loaded dyno what amount of load for a n/a car /truck do you recommend ?? And supercharged and turboed ?
Load it represent the rate of acceleration the vehicle will see in the real world.
If everything was perfect ign. timing in say 5th-6th gear would be retarded compared to 1st-2nd.
Also the fueling needs to be richer in the taller gears.
Is there a course to take for tuning? To figure out all the configurations needed to street tune/Dyno correctly & effectively.
I hear there's a tuning school called thetuningschool.
I unfortunately have no choice but to get a street tune. There are no awd dynos in my area aside from 1 and they only do German cars. I am building a '06 Cherokee SRT8
same here, trying to build a ‘12 Grand cherokee 5.7
tuning spark maps )) on NA engines on the street .... convenient , precise , cost effective , professional & timewasting :))
Yes, yes, yes, yes, & YES! :D
you forgot to mention most street tuners dont crawl under the car to use wide bands. its a hack tune if no wide band is used.
Wide bands are life!
💯
Yes! Thank you.
Should I tune my car and later Dyno tune later? What step should I take
Hey Benny,
That will depend on how you are driving it. If you are using this vehicle as a daily driver, a street tune will help ensure you have awesome drivability. If you are wanting something high power that can be sent down the track and want a dyno sheet to match, then getting a dyno tune will be want you want. Just depends on the overall preference. Thanks for watching!
can someone actually tune your chip and they live another state and cant up the obd1 up and see the reading they just going by the information you gave them of what you got in your car...i would think its hard to get the chip burn correctly especially the frist time..the reason i ask you that because im having that problem now..
I tune my engine on the drag strip with a logbook.
It’s actually both!
Prices and brands for affordable dyno's
How much is a dyno tune just having long tube headers put on?
Thanks for watching! That would depend on the tuner/shop and their cost. We do not disclose any pricing structures as every shop is different.
Around $850 in ga.
wait what? A place that trains people to dyno tune suggests dynos are better than street tuning? thats about right. dont want to hurt that bank account. ive been running dynos for 20yrs you can NOT adjust driveability on a dyno. all you get at a dyno is bragging rights for big non usable power numbers. get a base tune on a dyno and datalog, adjust and repeat.
I understand your trying to let people know be safe on the streets but the way you guys were talking is like ya shouldn’t drive your car on the street at all lol
But bro .. did you know that if you drive your car on the street, there is a chance you will crash your car or break down ?? stay safe 🙏🏻
@@joshl3721 so we should just keep our cars as garage queens lol… hopefully the garage don’t cave in lol 😂
What would I look for to find a shop that has a dyno and knows how to use a tuning program. Google maps search brings me irrelevant results. Then what would I ask for? Seems these days keywords are very important. I want to increase my low end torque by a lot.
I am fearing if I bought this program I would not be able to use it correctly without a lot of trial and error, or worse brick my car. I would rather just pay someone to do it who knows what they are doing. I have spent a lot of time studying HP tuners, and still have no clue what to do if I buy one. HP tuners seems like it would be compatible with my Jeep.
#StayTuned We have a Jeep Enthusiast course with printed materials using HP Tuners coming soon. You can sign up for the interest lists here - thetuningschool.com/pages/interest-list
I would suggest searching for shops with dynos, that might narrow down the search results. Give us a call M-F 8:30AM - 5PM or shoot us an email so we can further assist you !
Channel Zero One Late Answer, but.....go to some area car meet-ups/Cars & Coffee.
Ask owners of vehicles with similarities to yours if they are tuned, who did it, are you happy
Google “
car meets near me”
Million dollar question. Video answers it.
Rich nigga
Sorry, I don't agree that street tuning is any good. If you tune your vehicle on a load cell dynamometer you can simulate any / all road conditions with accuracy and repeatability, how else are you going to populate all the cells in the V.E. tables? Using a dynamometer without a load cell is just a waste of time and money (find a better shop). Just my two cents.
That's okay! Your two cents is worth it! Thanks for joining in on the conversation.
One is a simulator for the other, so how can a simulator be better than the real thing?
I’d agree with you if you were to drive the car on the dyno after tuning it, but NO ONE does that.
You get ripped off easy if you don't do a dyno. Tuners like to slack and take off 20-25 hp, and a lot of newbies think they are getting a good deal.
Lol who cares! Street tunes are way better. I love taking the tune guy for a fun ride! 👍😂
Dyno is more hp
@@TheBb6prelude cause it shows you what your HP is 😂
Thanks for joining in on the conversation!
@@TheTuningSchool I am a believer in street tuning. Dyno tune then zip up with a street tune. As y'all said. There is only one correct way. That's part of why dragsters always tuning after ever drag... Not Dyno on the trailer... 🤣
clyde shelton what if you do only a street tune alone without involving any dyno? Wouldn’t that also be the best result for performance?
Where the hell do you guy get that because you’re tuning a car you’re all of a sudden a going to crash. Drivability tuning is done at the post speed limit. Thats the point driving around.
Of course! We're based in Florida, though, where the average driver is insane. Thanks for that reminder! We find that super important.
TheTuningSchool I live in orlando and im from New York so i know about crazy drivers.
@@mikeeagle2653 Haha! You know exactly what we're talking about!

Hooray!
safest is on Dyno because if you break something you don't need a tow???? How is that safer? Cheaper on dyno because you could crash? lol laughable. Have ever seen dyno epic fails?
Haaaa the beauty of living in a 3rd world country lol whe got no cameras no cops wooooo scary but fun lol. #zimbabwe
This was a waste of a video... no actual facts just opions.
