This episode, I do some work on an old yacht in the Butler & Co shed; BANDOR, a 1938 Dallimore designed sloop. The Epoxy lamination goes well, despite the cold. The new Ferry build progresses, and I visit some friends who are rebuilding an old fishing boat to start a business with. We also meet a likely candidate for the youngest boatbuilder in Cornwall!

16. Laminating timbers into an old yacht / Cornish Projects - Rebuilding Tally Ho EP16
Lovely to come back from 5 years in the future to discover an early Tally Ho video missed. So enjoyed the simpler episode with Leo doing the work on his own.
TIL there is a whole community of people, young people, buying and restoring classic boats....As a simple midwestern boy, I never in a million years knew this was a thing that anyone other than billionaires did. It warms my heart!
Hi Leo, thanks for such fantastic videos. Great to see Bandor alive and well as she belonged to my father-in-law's father based on the east coast at and he has happy memories of cruising her with his father and racing her at Burnham week as a teenager. Now 83 and no longer able to sail, he was chuffed to bits to hear that she lives on. Thanks for sharing.
The boats look great. Although l am watching this video 5 years from now your video time to my time I can see why Tally Ho is such a great boat. You made a really good video on how to sharpen chisels and planes. I was inspired and I've been sharpening all my chisels planes knives and gouges. Thanks for the easy to follow instructions and advice. I'll see you in 5 years on your channel.
I used to be the owner/custodian of a Dallimore designed 39 foot eleven yacht named 'Worane" built here in Australia in Williamstown ( Melbourne). She was built in 1915 and was the fastest bit of wood I have ever owned and raced
I've watched these videos off and on. I'm currently watching from start to current. If I ever win the lottery (don't play it much, sadly) you'll be my third phone call. Beautiful work. Pleased to see such craftsmanship alive and well.
seeing you work on these other boats is reassuring, and proof that your not crazy. And that Tally Ho will be rebuilt and finished.
These last two videos working at the butler and co have brought a luxury of informations, your videos are educational, very good video quality
Nice to see Blue River Table still in operation in 2022.
I cant even get my kids to mow the lawn.Im very impressed with all of the people involved, beautiful videos.best thing ive watched for years
I dont know shit about boats, woodworking yes and what you do is simply AMAZING. Wow you have skills that are god like.
It must be so rewarding to see the results of your skillful and patient work.
There's just something elegantly genuine about wooden boat building. Thank you for sharing. :)
Having build my own wooden sailboat it's a real pleasure to see this skilled young man! Amazing!
lol so cute, so young shes shy yet at the same time is chiseling dowls like a shipwright!
It says a lot when a 22 minute video feels like a 2 minute video, keep up the good work! :)
Yes!
That is exactly what I want to hear as a video-maker - thanks!
You are a Enthusiasm. ..!
who has no bounds, with the hands and eyes of the builder, and the hart of the sea and bring her back to life what a beautiful place to be.
Don’t stop
How fantastic you will be at at sea ..!
What a beautiful morning Capt to be at sea .
J xx
Rock and Roll .
Sorry. Can’t see
You sir have the BEST boat building/restoration channel on UA-cam! Thx for the amazing content! And keep up the hard work
10/4 on that!!!!
I’m 52 and worked with wood most of my life and I got to say you got mad skills my friend, the fit is awesome.
When I first looked at the Tally Ho project I was thinking that there was a young man who has taken on a project that is more than he understands for complication. After this post, I can now see that I had completely misjudged your experience, ability, and shipbuilding knowledge, you are showing some serious great craftsmanship.
was a great surprise huh? was happy I was wrong...
Very happy to hear I have changed your mind :) thanks
When he scarphed that keel for Tally Ho solo it was made clear to me he had some serious boatbuilding chops.
Boy howdy, he is a very serious Shipwright.
Of course I agree with all of you! Awesomely talented young man with boundless energy. What is doubly impressive is that he's shooting and editing his own video! He must have an identical twin.
Awesome job on the replacements... Ms.Skye has no idea how valuable the education is she's getting... You all are doing fantastic work... I can do most work, EXCEPT Wood... it is my nemesis...
I know fuck all about boat building, but being from a family of home builders, i know craftmanship. You and all of your friends and coworkers are craftsman. You guys make functional art that lasts lifetimes. Glad i have a chance to see folks like you work.
Incredible craftsmanship! Love seeing younger generations keeping these old boats alive!
Somebody that has the skill not just a talker like most .very impressive work
If I won the lotto I would give you a pile of cash so you could continue rebuilding your boat with the best materials without fund constraints. Great work and a positive attitude. Thank you.
Two things Leo did, but didn't specifically point out: 1. He put an unthickened coat of epoxy on all joint surfaces before adding the filler, this prevents the wood from soaking up too much epoxy from the filler which could give you a weak joint; 2. He cleaned off the squeeze out, which were it allowed to harden, adds work later. Great vid. Love your friends' side project.
Great job. Those timbers you laminated together look beautiful, shame they got painted over :D
Only just found your channel! Excellent to see what you're doing! Im also a young shipwright from England and you give great enjoyment watching the videos. Keep it up !
Look forward to these videos. Fascinated to see the lamination come together, super skills. Love the team work both at Butler & Co with you all Sky included and with the rebuilt engine. Your films follow the BBC charter inform, entertain and educate. Just great!
Entertaining, educational, and, as always, the best background music on YT.
thanks :) glad you like the music
Your talent for working with wood and rebuilding these older wooden boats never ceases to amaze and impress me! God has blessed you with some amazing skills. It must be wonderful knowing you can make anything you want with your own hands.I just bought a wood boat built in 1970 and although she survey out okay, I'm just terrified that some day when I need work done on her nobody will be around with those talents to help me fix her again. I can't tell you how much I enjoy each and every video and how anxiously I await each one!
Thanks, much appreciated
:)
Thank you for another informative video and demonstration of repair techniques for wooden boats. It is really nice to see so many young people getting active the boating culture and following their dreams.
When I work with epoxy and acetone, I put on three of four pair of gloves. That way I just peel of the outer one's and I'm good to go. One breakthrough is too many. Your doing a beautiful job!
Lamination's are very beautiful when complete. I truly admire your wood crafting skills.
Correction mint to say that I enjoy watching you because you are a very good craftsman Butch Smith
The motor job reminded me of swinging an engine out of a yacht, then back in again all over a weekend, in the snow, on the Crinan Canal, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. We used the boom together with a wire winch, can still remember the icy hands and feet 30 plus years later!
I had to re-visit this after seeing your latest VLOG showing the progress of the Blue River Table project. Those two woman really accomplished an amazing success. Hats off to them and you for highlighting their adventure. I hope to see you make it to the end with Tally Ho.
I have no doubt that you will see it through and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Great production and very informative. The greatest joy is watching someone else do all the faffing around :-)
As a Tenn. River wooden boat owner I can't get enough of video's like this!
Fantastic work Leo, as ever a pleasure to watch a craftsman at work.
Thanks for taking the time to make these films. Can’t wait to see you back at tally ho. Take care. 😁🏴
The child held and used the hammer and chisel better than I have seen some apprentices do :D
LEEDS8 Yeahh, if you let them do stuff, they will get the hang of it!
some just are born to it bless her heart!
A right proper little boatyard rat!
LEEDS8 never mind apprentices I have seen trades men how can’t use a hammer or use a chisel. Like you I love these videos.
Because too many try and nerf the world
Hey Leo, I definitely intend to support you on Patreon but for now just wanna let you know I give all your videos a ‘like’ and I let the ads run, even if they’re the long ones! Good luck!
I love how you show all the little finicky work and how you are doing it.
Is so calming to watch the nice workmanship you are doing.
My 160+ year old house do not get that nice time consuming detail work. But someday I may be doing more nice finishing details for the charm sake.
Great content
I have to admire the English Lady boat builders, both young and old, that is why Lady Britannia ruled the waves
I've binge watched the last two days on and off up to this point, heck I even snuck in the last few minutes of episode 14 after break at work today, he he. I've always loved wooden boats and the beauty and complexity of their frame work. I never knew how much craftsmanship, wood selection and techniques went into building and sealing them up. Thanks for sharing all this with us. To bad I don't live in Oak Harbor anymore, I would have been there almost every weekend. I live in southern Louisiana now, sniff sniff. Best of Wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya
Awesome life adventure you're on mate. Enjoying every moment you're on . Looking forward to every one of your well filmed and edited episodes.
*We'll done !*
That is truly amazing work you are doing. By the time you were finished, that piece looked like a work of art.
What a titanic amount of work to restore these old yacht !
Watching your video's I have a newfound respect for boat builders and craftsmen who originally made and now restore old wooden craft. Can't wait to see you start work on Tally Ho in the near future.
I totally concur. Especially as the old guys used hand tools. Imagine them seeing the Lithium ion battery-powered equipment of today ..
I love the Tally Ho project - look forward to each new video.
I know this is crazy but the Parrot is youTube gold.
Don't forget to slip in a few more Parrot shots when you get back to Washington LOL :)
I find it totally relaxing watching people working on boats. Having spent time building a small 18 footer I understand the skill and care required to do the job correctly. Keep up the great work, hopefully we will see the keel in Tally Ho soon...
Hey Leo, why don't you sell some trips on Tallyho when she is finished to fund some work
Regards David
Love the videos! You guys under that beam for the block and tackle supporting that engine and the scaffolding supporting you guys and the engine had my pucker factor up!! Glad everyone and thing were okay!
I grew up on an AMF Sunfish, racing in the Midwest, and have been an a number of bigger boats over the years, J24s, ice boats, and whatever else... my brother in law was or is a friend of Buddy Melges who builds boats, but these old wooden yachts are beautiful pieces of art.
You have some mad skills my friend! These are the skills that made the modern world. My hats off to you and your mates for keeping these skills alive!
Leo: You are a Ship Wright yourself. You are a good carpenter and a craftsman. Keep it up.
It is very easy to appreciate that boatbuilding and restoration is a very labour, skill, expensive material, intensive activity, where money, lots of it are needed.
Easy? I think its hard. I'm sure everything is harder than it looks and it would have taken me 3 attempts at each step to get a passing result..
The craftsmanship is appreciated. Cheers to you
Really nice video, man! I live in Dana Point, California. We have a couple “tall ships” that are a permanent part of our harbor. There is a nice workshop, manned by volunteers, that does all the maintenance on both ships. Tons of hand work, li,e you’re doing. I find it fascinating. Good luck on Tally Ho!
Thanks for the show, and for keeping us update.
I could watch this channel for hours on end.
Wonderful job! I rebuilt a wrecked grand piano from 1844 back in the 1960s and glued the structural parts of the frame with epoxy. Fifty years later it is as strong and solid as it was then.
I felt like I was dining in a nice Italian restaurant with most of the music that was used. GOOD MUSIC! Just not what I expected! Wonderful video.
All this beautiful woodwork and most people will never see it.
cooking with Leo. nice to see some construction! you're a great host, looks good, we're about the same age and it makes me wish I had filmed all the wild stuff I was getting into back then, cheers
The classic intro line for the first time! It all started here
Leo - Great work and as others have mentioned love seeing all this restoration work! Keep em coming !
Started at 6pm this evening at episode 1. I can't believe I've just watched 4 straight hours of boat restoration.
you ae doing a nice job, not only on Tally ho! Respect !
Five years later and Blue River Table seems to be a success! Nice to know for sure.
yeah but it seems the boat is from 1971 instead of 1901 according to their own website
You really are a talented fellow. I enjoy watching a true craftsman at work.
My father & grandfather are Basque from Vitoria Gaestiz. My great grandad was a shipwright. My father was a carpenter & loved working on boats. I think its in my blood because I love sailboats & I love watching wood sailboats being built. I also love the Polynesian voyaging catamarans.
It's a pleasure watching you work ,thank you
I enjoy that Leo make his parts with the utmost care and precision. Well done!
thanks for taking us on your journey, it's a lovely idea to restore historic boats.
Totally enjoyable videos, I find it fascinating watching your skills being utilised and the high level of craftsmanship, I can now understand why there are people that are so passionate about building and restoring boats, especially some of the classic old vessels, Thanks Leo for bringing us along with you on your journey
Didn't know anyone still used red lead. I don't think you can even get it in nz anymore. It's also brilliant as an undercoat on steel, the steel will never rust.
Good day! I used to work in a ship yard in the Phippines my late father taught me how to caulk fishing boats, unfortunately it's a vanishing trade nowadays. Wooden boats are replaced by second hand steel boats mostly from Japan. When I saw your videos I actually waited for the caulking part. I hope I get to see it.
Oh cool that boat in the background is named Bonaventure, there is a famous aircraft carrier in Canadian Naval history of the same name! She was deployed to the Suez Crisis.
I'm very impressed by the huge level of skill you have when working wood. The laminating was really impressive and reminds me I should start learning such things. Thank you again for a great video.
Thanks for making these videos while you work, I appreciate the work and effort that goes into it. Its very educational and inspiring
That is a perfect example of modern craftmanship.
Thank's for letting me have a look-see into your many projects along with the Tally-Ho. Interesting as I'm just an observer.
Beautiful beautiful amazing work ... Brilliant Yard.
Love wood working so this show is great for me to watch.
That was so wonderful; what a nice piece of laminate you made it was a work of art in the end and then you paint it all LOL
Leo - I know you’ll most likely not even see this, but if any boat builders are reading: at 3:30 Leo talks about laminating a wooden form and mentions some of its benefits, but also that he does not like it due to its chemical nature. But does this epoxy act as a natural bug barrier? And does that make it worth the negative offset? Are there other reasons for using/not using resin-impregnated woods for boat construction?
Please forgive my ignorance, but that’s one of the reasons I like watching Leo (and others) doing their work. I love to learn stuff, and I appreciate Leo’s willingness to take his valuable time to make me a little smarter than I was yesterday. Cheers!
(Just a bloody American trying to sound British - another way to say thanks!)
4:09 Ah the good old third hand technique.
Awesome work and video editing! Who knew the English were such great ship builders! (Kidding!) I really enjoyed the vids.
Great work. Always enjoy seeing pro's do their thing.
yooo! my grandparents house is in the background of the intro to this one. thats mylor bridge playing field!
A pleasure to watch you work.....You are a true craftsman!
Excellent workmanship young men keep up the good work
Your workmanship is outstanding 👍. A joy to watch you 'in action' 😀
Please give us a tour of that shop and the work being done. So many beauties
I would strongly suggest when using microballoons or any epoxy filler, to add in some milled fiberglass fibers into the mix. It will add some strength and keep it from potentially cracking. I add them to my epoxy each and every time as an "insurance policy". :) Keep up the great videos.
Yes, fibre is helpful, as long as you are not laminating, especially cotton fibre, it thickens the epoxy as well as strengthens. I believe that is what West system adhesive fillet is. The glass fibre mix stays runny but can leave clumps in a thin join line.
I live in the west of Ireland, When you get TALLY-HO to UK I will definite pop over and check her out. You do great work. I am impressed with you skill, and you make it look easy. What do we say about wood working "MEASURE TrICE CUT ONCE'
Leo the floors are gorgeous!
Leo, I never see you take tea.
Lol.
I love your channel.
Some stunning work there guys and girls nice to see true craftsmen and women
Good show mate. Keep up the great work you do. You are an Artist. When I worked as a engineer on a 83’ tri. in the VI we put a little acetone in the epoxy to thin a first coat to flow into the wood. We actually replaced frames while in the water. Fiberglass ply construction.
