THIS episode, I meet the Grandson of Mark Spinks, who Skippered Tally Ho in 1927 when she famously won the Fastnet Race, and continued to run the boat while she was under the ownership of Lord Stalbridge. We take a look at the rest of Tally Ho’s history, and then I travel to Bristol to meet John R-B, who builds replica Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters in the Underfall Yard, and who first took me on as an apprentice when I first started doing wooden boat work. He tells us a little about the history of Pilot Cutters, and talks about why yacht designers return again and again to their classic lines.
Finally, I travel back to the US and take a long road-trip from Boston down to south Georgia, to visit Cross Sawmill, where a huge amount of Southern Live Oak (Quercus Virginiana) is being milled for me, to be used as framing stock on Tally Ho back in Washington State.

I cannot express how bad I want Leo to bring Tally Ho back to where that old man lives. That would be amazing!
Here I am in 2023 re-watching this episode again and wondering if that old man is still alive some 5 years later. I hope so, it would be great to see the smile on his face.
I am Steve's neighbor and good friend. I helped him rebuild his Sawmill and adapted it to where he can saw stone or wood. When I started watching your videos, I did not realize he was cutting wood for your boat. I will have to tell him I watched the project.
Leo is not only a ship builder and sailor, he is quite the filmmaker! So well done, entertaining and educational. Thoroughly enjoying this series.
Beautiful! That gentleman just relived his whole life while you were with him and he grew 2feet taller, with a smile wider than Tally Ho's beam... wonderful stuff. :)

Small world. It was our neighbour Malcolm and his father than pulled Tally Ho off the reef in the 60’s with their fishing boat.
M/V Heather George - they towed Tally Ho about 180nm to Rarotonga, where she was repaired.
When the Tally Ho is finished and sailed back to Britain, if possible you should go back and give this gentleman a ride for memories sake in response for all the historical data he's provided you!

I'm sitting here nearly in tears watching Roy, he reminds me of my grandfather. I'm amazed by his exuberance and enthusiasm and I just know you made his day by helping him relive the time spent with his grandfather. This is one of your best videos yet!
So good to come back to this origin story episode 5 whole years later. Amazing how time flies and amazing the amount and quality of work done to date. Looking forward to her eventual launch and further adventures.
I once stopped of in Warsash or near Warsash. Got into conversation with an old boy much like the gentleman on this video. At one point I asked whether he had lived in Hampshire for all of his life. He gave me a long look as though I had asked a stupid question and said "Be oi yampshire? be oi buggery oim's from Warsash". The woodwork on that cutter is gorgeous. £270.000? For all that skilled workmanship and impossibly beautiful woodwork. Cheap at twice the price
Once the restoration is done you should get that picture at 4:21 redone with you as the Skipper.
To me the race story makes her way more badass! Almost everyone else literally quit and she finished!
What an absolutely brilliant character Roy is !!
Watching thru 30+ episodes I am continually amazed at the abilities of this young man. From the initial manhandling by himself of a multi-ton chunk of beautiful wood for the keel; prior to that the building of the framework overhead to protect the job site to the recovering of the overhead frame with new plastic covering, again by himself. I have to remember that he is an accomplished sailor, boat builder, rigger.....all that contributes to that self-sufficiency. It is gratifying to see all those individuals who come to help from different parts of the planet. I especially admire his female sidekick who has been with him the whole time on and off. His latest work in the kitchen of the shop is indicative of his style.....instead of just plain shelves over the sink he crafted a set of shelves that reflect his personality in his craft, both satisfying to the eye and better with soft curves than with harsh angles. Goes with his high expectations for fabricating the new free flowing ribs of the Tally HO. Great series! Makes me want to be young again!

Watching you speak to the old gentleman about his Grandfather and the past history of Tally Ho I couldn't help but think of what you are doing..not only giving her a new life, but documenting as much as you can of her past, and the people who were a part of it, and her future...for, perhaps, your future grandson, who may someday, see and hear you as a young man speak with reverence of the boat and the people...and your contribution to her history.
What a wonderful way to link it all together.

What a great opportunity to get that history of a 108 year old vessel from someone who had been on her when she was still basically a newer boat (36 years old boat at the time). Thanks for the walk down Tally-Ho's memory lane.

This segment takes me back to 60 years ago. This village of Warsash on The Hamble river! I started my first job here rowing across to build boats for Fairey Marine on the Hamble side. The Crab & Lobster restaurant gone but what was the Royal Thames Yacht Club now Warash Sailing Club still exists. Once graced by the likes of Duke of Edinborough . Such a great yachting meca and a wonderful place to grow up! Loving this series rebuilding Tally Ho!
First UA-camr that I look forward to watching and check for updates. I'm in my mids 20s and learning every trade out there to become a contractor "the right way". Father is a Top Tier mastertech and he is the last of his breed. The fine touches and tolerances that we can create from the eye are amazingly beautiful. Working with the hands and making it beautiful is becoming a lost skill obviously. But to see you work on wood ships and using some old methods is awesome man. Awesome.

Isn't it interesting how the "originals" like Steve Cross turn up now and then with completely different people following completely different goals, connected only by a slightly weird chap sawing into slabs whatever runs abeach in his yard?
Leo, a special thanks for seeing the old man Roy (Rory...?) and sharing his joy with us: an important part of having, reviving and honoring an ol'girl like Tally Ho is learning to know about her very history, and how's that better done than via talking to contemporary witnesses?
You seem to really grow into assessing something extraordinary with Your colossal task to bring her back to life, and to the Solent (via Cape Horn, of course 😄).

Loved the video and the history of Tally Ho. Got really excited when you arrived at the sawmill and the guy said, "you must be Leo." So disappointed when the video ended. Looking forward to seeing the milling.
I think @Salt&Tar needs to consider the tip for interior wood oiling before they launch. Makes so much sense in keeping the leaks to a minimum after launch and preserving the wood. I hope they haven't painted much of the interior yet!

Leo, thanks for hunting down the history and the folks that were involved when Tally Ho was young! Please include any footage you might collect when you and She are back across the pond and can reconnect with the early players in her life. Please include footage you collect after this rebuild project as well. It will be very cool to continue to follow the continuing saga of this fine craft and those that help keep her alive and afloat.

Lovely to see the history and hear from someone who was onboard back in the day. Some amazing photos which no doubt will be helpful in the rebuild. I have been to the Underfall boatyard and saw Jonathan Livingston before she was finished. What a fine boat that is, wonderful they are still being built.
