- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection brings together 13 of the games made by Konami and based on the classic franchise. It is just about to release on the Nintendo Switch but is it worth getting? Well, let's find out...
Apologies for such a long review but it occurred to me that as much as these games were my childhood and I know them like the back of my hand, that was some 30 years ago now (I'm so old!) and I didn't want to assume everyone watching had the same level of experience with them. The colour changing joycon we use - save $8 with code: SUP2022
Product link: bit.ly/30tIm0N - they are very comfortable, have GYRO, Rumble (standard) and a proper D-Pad. Plus they charge normally on the Switch. Great Joycon.

Happy gaming! Glen
I don’t blame you for making a long review of this. There’s 13 games in this compilation and they’re a huge part of many people’s childhoods. I think it’s right that you would give each of them a fair amount of analysis in this video.
Great review Glen. Perfect person for the job!
Dude, don't apologize, its great.
No apologies needed. I can’t wait until my copy of the game arrives!
This definitely needed a longer review given how much is there to talk
Man. Between this and Shredder's Revenge, its a good year to be a TMNT fan.
This is amazing
Huge props to Konami for the UI/presentation here. Way better than their previous Contra and Castlevania collections. I hope it sells well so they continue to make more of these
Whats wrong with the castlevania collections? Because i plan on getting the advance collection.
@@rhovrox9291 seems pretty similar to me imo
@@rhovrox9291 The first one doesn't have good looking menus imo unlike this TMNT collection and there are some typos on the reading material. I just feels rushed
@@alexsilva28 yeah i have that. any problem on the advance collection
@@rhovrox9291 No idea
After playing through both Turtles in time games back to back, I can say I had a LOT more fun with the snes version over the arcade.
I remember a class trip to Alton Towers in the early 90's where me and 3 mates spent a lot of our time (and a good chunk of change!) just pumping money into TMNT the arcade game, and The Simpsons arcade game until we completed them. Good memories. We were probably hated by anyone else who wanted a play on it. Picking this up is a no brainer for me. Great detailed review (as always)
Arcade beat 'em ups were some of the best games around. So much fun with a few mates. Glen
Same. My cousin worked in our local arcade and gave me and my mates free credits. We were poor as dirt but she knew the struggle! Beautiful memories!
Great review. Made me realize that just nostalgia alone isn't enough to pay that price considering the overlap of the same titles for different machines. I'll definitely pick it up on a sale in the future though! I DO love the original Eastman and Laird comic panels on the game select screens.
Yeah, they look very cool. Glen
Now this is how to do a collection! Certainly sets a standard any other devs should follow when trying to do something similar. Cant wait for Tuesday!
Its juat emulation i looked at the games files and it literally has a folder called roms lol and they are actually roms just encrypted
@@matthewjuarbe5826 lol yea and i def have all those on my psvita and other devices but its nice to have an "official" collection that has some other nice aspects to it
@@Tyler-hs9eu that is true they kind of went the extra mile with the extras and I appreciate it. screenshots of all the episodes from all the series game box covers and manuals. comic book covers from tall the issues.
@@matthewjuarbe5826 Anything emulated is a rom, the point is thst they're emulated well with additional features and the additional content in the package including the hyper dynamic selection screen shows the extra care. They could have just had a boeing list to choose from and nothing else but the constantly animated screen that jumps everywhere as you select games is already in it's owneague for a compilation game.
Im actually happy that it was Digital Eclipse that worked on this compilation. This is even better than their Disney Afternoon Collection on PS4. This went the whole distance in delivering on the fanservice
This was my early Christmas/Birthday present, and I couldn't be happier with it. The ability to remove the flicker and slowdown in the original TMNT NES game actually makes it a lot more playable.
This is a dream come true for me to have a variety of TMNT games on the go...
Love this collection. Had most of these in my home growing up, and my dad would take me to complete the arcade game in cleethorpes back in the day. Cheers for the review.
Great days mate. Loved the arcades back in the day. Glen
The nostalgia is strong with this one!
got it yesterday, and was fun playing TMNT 1 and Turtles in time for a couple of hours. Look forward to getting my 7 year old son to have a crack at some games I was playing in the arcade at 7!
You had me at GBA games. If Nintendo made it possible to play GBA games on the switch, that would be an absolute dream! I'll be picking this one up for sure!
It’s a KONAMI game, not Nintendo.
4 in the morning over here in New York and I’m laying in bed watching my favorite channel
Definitely one of the best collections on the platform and some of the best games for the NES and SNES. Turtles 4 is definitely still one of the best ever Beat 'em Ups and SNES game. The Genesis Tournament fighters always felt like they were trying to make a Konomi version of Smash Bros (Before Smash was a thing even), backgrounds and characters felt just off compared to normal turtles stuff.
These games were my absolute jam back in the day! I played them all so many times with friends and just by myself as well. I was shocked to hear that Hyper Stone Heist existed for Sega Genesis! No clue how I missed that one. I was even one of the few that owned a Sega Genesis Nomad handheld back in the day on top of the regular Genesis home console so I've no excuse other than lack of awareness. Can't wait to play that title now 30 years after it's initial release! Better late than never I guess.
Great review as always. I was able to secure a preorder for the Limited Edition which should be arriving tomorrow. I can't wait to revisit these games, old and new! I never got to play TMNT III: Radical Rescue for the Game Boy, Hyperstone Heist on the Genesis, or Tournament Fighters on the Genesis and NES, so I'm excited to check those out for the first time. Cowabunga, dudes!
Nice! I’m mainly nostalgic for the 1st and 2nd NES games, played them endlessly back in the day
I played the absolute hell out of Tournament Fighter as a kid, it was the only TMNT game I had. Plan on buying this for that alone, everything else is a fantastic bonus.
Superb review! You brought everything I needed to know. Time to dig into it!
Cheers mate! Glen
Definitely gonna be picking this one up physically along with Shredder's Revenge! COWABUNGA!
Definitely picking this up for both PC and Switch.
And while the sprite flicker on the NES game can be turned off I imagine I’ll be playing with it on for the original experience.
I thought the same and then very quickly got used to not having it flicker haha. Glen
Looks fantastic, cant wait!
Great review as always, going through each game quickly was a good idea.
I'm wondering how tournament fighters holds up? I had it on the SNES and haven't played it in absolute years. From memory we didn't play too much and would always go back to SFII
Tournament Fighters for the SNES holds up quite well. It's difficult but has a good style to it. The Mega Drive version was one of the weaker entries for me and the NES one was fun to play being one of the few games on here I hadn't played before. Glen
@@SwitchUpYt Only had the Snes one but remember it being slightly above average. Had a lot of competition to be fair!
Looking forward to trying it again. Some collection though.
Update: 2/20 for online play. So lagged and bugged that it's rendered completely unplayable. And mark off 5 points for that main title screen theme. It's maddening!
They put a lot of love into that collection by the looks of it.
I think Shredder's Revenge satisfies my Turtles Itch
Love the flex at the end, showing the successful completion of the underwater level that vexed so many of us as kids…. Well done!
Haha, good spot. Cheers mate! Glen
I can recall memories with almost all of these games. Each game you brought up had my life flash before my eyes. Hopefully I'm not about to die haha. Great review!
Omg! Why did i only hear about this today? So many amazing games from my childhood here. So much nostalgia from those arcade beat em ups and the tournament fighters. Also, trauma from that underwater level. Its a definite must buy for me
This might be one of the greatest collections to ever be released. As for my personal favorite, I have always been a fan of the Arcade game but Turltles in Time is so good as well.
Nice review. You mentioned the SNES version being faster than the Megadrive but it was the other way around.
Also re audio, did you notice the audio lag in the games? It's annoying the hell out of me. Also the intro music to the first arcade game is not the original due to licensing. Some other small differences in the audio due to emulation but they're nitpicks.
When you play co op does it have to be with people online? Or can you play with next to you?
Thanks as always guys! Was out and remembered to pick up Mario Wonder. I’d thought this game was a Limited Run game, happened to see this game. So had to add to my collection of backlog, and I do swear I am going to get to it. Someday, at some point. Anyone have a stop time power? Or a slow down life button? I know a relax and little time to myself machine. Someone has to have one right?
Take care and God bless.
I’d love to see a simpsons collection!
I was on the fence about this one. Thanks for the review, now I am sure I am adding this game to my collection!
I got my own copy of radical resuc(only cartridge) and hyperstone heist the full pal box. These were my turtles games beginning as a kid and I love radical rescue even if it's hard as ballz, but what a good soundtrack man. hyperstone heist is repetitive yes but I love the mega drive soundchip more than the snes sounds from turtles in time. But turtles in time is a bit more variable in the leveldesign and the mode 7 throwing foot soldiers is kinda cool.
Awesome games overall. I remember getting turtles in time on the ps3 Sony online store and the music was ruined because they changed it. I'm glad they kept it the way it was meant to be played in this collection. The other nes and gameboy games are nice to have to the collection. I remember playing the first gameboy it was so good. Hyperstone heist for the sega genesis was awesome too. This is an awesome collection. The turtles lair in the extra content is a great touch they added to the collection.
17th January 1990, I was 3 days before my 7th Birthday. when it first aired in the UK. Everyone at school wanted to be Leonardo.
Very nice that Konami did a little more work on this collection that usual, day one purchase for sure , love being a turtle !!!
For sure! Glen
Oh nice, they cleared up the annoying sprites flickering issue in the NES games.
Awesome review, gonna be getting this.
For me, TNT 3 Manhattan Project on NES & TNT 3 Radical Rescue on Game Boy is my favourite one. Until today I'm still playing it on my Galaxy A50 🥰
Good lord, it's been roughly 30 years since most of these touched my hands. Glad I have my physical copy coming in soon!
Is there a classic green dot matrix filter for the gameboy games?
There are only 3 games in this package that really interest me. Not enough to justify it's price. I've waited 30+ years. I can wait 18 months more for a deep sale.
I only played one of them growing up...that was the 1st NES game with that very hard bomb level. Never could get pass that point.
My absolute ONLY minus is missing the intros (plus outros). TMNT's intros are...half the reason I love them. They set up the shows so outstandingly well, that having the intros in the gallery would've made me hug my Switch and go to sleep with it :D
Absolutely agree!
Will definitely be asking for this for Christmas, just hope I can complete shredder's revenge by then.
I'm getting this one for sure!
Thanks for the review.
B,A,B,A,Up,Down,B,A,L,R,B,A,Start - Title screen of NES TMNT. After all these years, still remember it off by heart! Would love to play these with the kids. Great review!
L and R? On an NES game?
@@Bauglir100 thought the same thing then I realized they probably mean left and right on the d-pad
They need to fix the super move in manhatton project. When u press a&b simultaneously it doesn't register half of the time.
Fall of Foot Clan on GB was my childhood. I can beat that game blindfolded. 🤣
Great review 👍🏻looking forward to playing this , I must have spend a fortune in Bridlington arcade playing some of these
One of the most interesting of this collection, its that it includes at least 4 genres of games, been a beet em up," metroidvania", fighting games, and platforming.
My Dad used to take my friend and myself to this comic book shop, and we would just play TMNT arcade. Good memories.
Great review, turtles in time and hyperstone heist are two of my favourite 16-bit games so I think I will buy this, looks like they have done the games justice
Radical rescue was the game i played as a kid on a multi game pack for gameboy! Glad it was included and I could find it, the nostalgia for that game alone makes me want to get it!! I could barely beat the first boss and never unlocked any of the other turltes... I think Raphael was 2nd?
So much nostalgia. Unfortunately, I ordered Shredder's Revenge through Limited Run so that is my Turtles game for this year (if I get it this year. Lol) I may pick this one up sometime next year.
My nostalgia says buy it for turtles 89 but then I remember that infuriating under water level.🤔
I remember playing the one on NES back in the day it was well difficult but my fave has to be Turtles in Time!
Fall of the Foot Clan was the first game I ever beat. Need this collection!
Nice with you and another one of my day, one purchases of when I get my switch, especially beanie ninja turtles fan and have such memory of turtles in time 4 on the super Nintendo.
I didn't even think about the PS2 TMNT games. I do hope those get a collection release as well.
It costs only 3.300¥ in the japanese eshop if you wanna save some money on the digital release.
Sadly there’s no physical release available in Japan. :/
It would have been cool if they put the ZX Spectrum port of the original TMNT NES game. It was ported by David Perry (of Earthworm Jim fame) and was pretty impressive for the system.
Thanks for the review. I've got the physical on pre order. Looking forward to this one.
I have a question anyone could answer I have this collection on my switch and I'm loving it but the one thing I'm really confused about is when I try to play split joy cons on one of the games it won't allow me don't know why buy if I had another pair of joy cons as in two it would work but it I try to play 2 player with one joy con each it won't let me do it like that does anyone know what's up with that
Yeah, this has to be graded on a curve but I loved this show as a kid
2:00 they turned the 2 extra players into levels, funniest shit I've ever seen.
The original NES turtles, that was bloody hard!!!
It really was! I do enjoy it though. Glen
I love the SNES turtles in time but I’ll enjoy the arcade for the first time too
Excellent review. Thank you!
I have TMNT for the GBA and it’s actually an extremely underrated turtles beat ‘em up. If would be nice if they came out with a second collection but i doubt that they will. The later games just weren’t anywhere near as popular as the original ones.
I would love this on physical cartridge. A great collection. I used to play Turtles in Time in the arcade. Good to know I spent my time well while Skyving school. I probably spelt skiving wrong! Yeah, maybe I should have went to school 😋
Hahaha, quality! Glen
I’ve been holding off on Shredder’s Revenge just so I can play through this first. I can’t wait for this!
Same here. ^^’
Same. And to be honest, I prefer the artstyle of the classics.
Save state and rewind for NES Turtles 1: now I can finally give this a go for completion!
“Big Apple 3am” big nostalgia,
Can’t wait to play this!!! Thank you.
Ps: Could you guys review Pac-man World Repac as well??
We will have a review of Pac-Man at some point soon. Glen
I'm going to get a physical of this on the switch but my main time with be on the PlayStation for the trophies. Ive already beaten these several times but it will nice to trophy hunt on them for something new to do.
I remember when the Turtles used to be called Hero Turtles rather than Ninja Turtles. I used to watch the Turtles when I was a child and ofc I played all the classics too then one day we just went with the name Ninja Turtles.
I think it was called Hero Turtles in some countries outside the US. And in later seasons of the original cartoon, Michelangelo's nunchucks were replaced with a grappling hook simply because nunchucks were illegal in some countries.
There is no review that has mentioned the difference in the TMNT arcade intros. It's not the original opening and I know it's better than nothing but there's something about it that just feels off. I feel like that cover could've been done so much better but as an overall package, this thing is amazing.
I know that recent versions of the game had used different vocals for that intro (such as the Arcade 1UP cabinet for example) but couldn't find confirmation of whether this one was different.
1 review does mention it.
Wait, you guys are reviewing publisher advance copies now?
Always have been - that’s how every review channel gets copies for review. Mark
You skipped the one major thing when it comes to retro collections. Is there button remapping in the collection itself and is it game by game?
And before anyone says it, please don't say "Use the switch system remapping". That method isn't great. Many of these games were made for different systems, so game by game remapping is important. Not to mention that any controller that isn't seen as an official switch pro controller or joy con, it doesn't work at all. That includes the retro Nintendo switch online controllers
Yes you can change the controls for each game.
I spent SOOOOOOOOO much of my pocket money in the late 80's on the arcade game, used to go to Stretford to watch Manchester Red Devils basketball team and they had it in the foyer by the pop machine. Many a time I'd get told off for wasting my money by my Dad 😂
Haha, they used to have it in the leisure centre where we went swimming as a kid. I played a lot of it there. Glen
Favourite? Definetly the first Arcade game. Played it during an Italy vacation in 1992 and almost spent my whole "holiday" money on it ;-).
The Switch is *the* platform for such games. Having your nostalgia-inducing games on the go is the perfect combination.
Completely agree mate! Glen

me and my brother got stuck at 2 shredders (Nes Arcade game).. it was the first time i rage at a video game as a kid haha
How long before it's delisted?
Been looking forward to your review of this
Hope you enjoyed! Glen
I think this collection is amazing. But I do wish they had the game boy color TMNT games board game boy advance. There are so many TMNT games out there
I need to know if there is widescreen 16:9 support ?
There is a wide screen option, I mention it in the visuals section. I don't know whether it is the standard aspect ratio or not though, the game doesn't specify.
I'll buy these games for my Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch. TMNT forever!
I'll cop these once they go on sale
Got it today. Jeez playing that NES one really transported me back to being 8 again. But then so did the arcade beat em up included here, begging my parents for change to play it at the local leisure centre (the main reason I wanted to go swimming). This is all awesome as hell if you're of a certain age(!)
How...? I'm on Nintendo Switch and I can't purchase it from the Nintendo eShop.
@@Phantom.Gaming64 It's a physical copy ordered online. It arrived today.
@@djhabibi04 Now I feel dumb for asking the question 😆 I've become so used to purchasing games digitally during this global pandemic of Covid, that I don't think about physical copies. Well, enjoy the game, buddy 😉
@@Phantom.Gaming64 Thanks man! I'd also say that a retro title like this is good to have digitally anyway. I also use these guys' 10% off for eshop credit when I can. You'll get a good deal on the game this way, even better if you wait for it to go on an eshop sale.
I'm only really interested in the 2 arcade games but, I already have the TMNT Arcade1up machine.
That's a thing of beauty.
Yeah, I have that too. It's great! Glen
Lucky! I couldn't grab one in time but I did recently snag the Simpsons version. Simpsons bowling turned out to be the most played game on the cabinet.
You're wizards. I just thought it'd be great to see a review of this game, and poof here it is.
I got my physical copy on Saturday!! Go Walmart! I never get games early.....actually they are usually a couple days late. Now i just have to wait for some online players!! Also, I think it's odd they put extra lives or god mode as options for many games but not Turtles on NES which is one of the harder titles IMO.
Dang.. Konami are major f*ck ups over the last 5-6 years but they really did nail it with this collection.
Gotta give credit when it is due.
Yeah, this has had a lot of time put into it. Glen
I think the first NES Game artwork was based more on the Comics. Back then they all wore Red Bandanas
The box art was for sure. The in game characters were mostly original creations. Glen
Im geting the physical copy of this game I can't way't to play. I was born in 87 so this is pure nostalgic. Mostly playd the Snes version's cus that was the consol we oned.
I knew it would be good, but I’m even more excited for my copy to arrive now 😁👍
