  • Preventing weeds before they germinate in the Spring is the most efficient way to keep your yard looking its best later in the Spring and all throughout the summer.
    In this video I explain the most common preventative products used in home lawns to stop weeds from sprouting - these products are safe for most grass types in both the warmer climates down south and the cooler climates up north.
    ♦♦♦When To Apply Weed Pre-Emergent By City♦♦♦♦
    ► turfmechanic.c...
    In my yard, I'll be using a prodiamine product at a low app rate in the very early spring followed up by an organic corn gluten meal fertilizer product in the early summer to suppress most grassy weeds throughout the season. Then I'll spot-treat problem weeds including dandelion as needed throughout the year as typical residential-grade pre-emergents like prodiamine, pendamethalin, and dithiopyr won't stop everything from coming back.
    ► If you are looking to stop weeds in your lawn this year then you can see all the products I'll be using and including a few alternatives listed and outlined over on my website right here: turfmechanic.c...
    ► You can also see this post to learn more about why you may or may not want to apply pre-emergents to your lawn this Spring: turfmechanic.c...
    ► You can price out Anderson's DG Barricade through the following Amazon affiliate link: www.amazon.com...
    ► You can price out Scott's WeedEx for a pendamethalin option through this Amazon affiliate link: www.amazon.com...
    ► If you want to go the Dithiopyr route then your best bet is to look at Dimension over on DoMyOwn.com. Here is an affiliate link direct to the product. It's a bit pricey and it's something I won't be using but many homeowners choose to use it anyway: shrsl.com/2vkcw
    ► As mentioned above, none of these weed-prevention products will prevent dandelions from growing in your lawn. To learn more about preventing and stopping dandelion infestations see this post on my website: turfmechanic.c...
    ► In early Summer I'll be applying Concern Weed Prevention Plus to my lawn for an extra 4-6 weeks of weed stop packaged with slow-release organic fertilizer. The Concern uses corn gluten meal to prevent weeds but it will only work if your watering practices are dialed in. I'll go into more detail on how to do this in another video but you can price out this organic solution through this link: www.amazon.com...
    Also, as mentioned in the video it is possible to germinate perennial ryegrass in fairly cold weather and it will grow quite fast giving you a small window of opportunity to seed in the early spring and then apply a late Spring pre-emergent to prevent summer weeds from germinating. See this video for demonstrations and commentary on getting grass to germinate at various soil temps: • Temperature & Speed of...

    I would love to see a video on how to prevent weeds on a new lawn as well as general new lawn care maintenance. There are a lot of new-build properties that often close during warmer months so curious when is it safe to use weed prevention products on a new grass.

    Hey Brian! My friend just told me that I should use fertilizer (Scotts Turf Builder) a couple of weeks after applying pre-emergent on my lawn. I live in Georgia, and I'm about to apply pre-emergent (Scotts Halts weed preventer, exact bag in your video) this Sunday (March 13). You are definitely more knowledgable than him so I trust you. In this video, you said not to apply fertilizer in the spring time after pre-emergent. So when (which month) should I use fertilizer? Should I gently water the grass after using my products?

      Scott's Turf Builder is mostly urea, ammonium sulphate, and the small bit of potassium comes from potassium sulphate - all three have burn potential if over applied to soils, especially dry soils. In the spring your lawn will green up and grow on its own naturally so the fast growth push of this type of product is not something I recommend to most people except for maybe people with thin lawns and grass types that spread like warm season grasses and kbg. If you want your turf to spread into thin spots then extra growth push of heavy N may be helpful but for most lawns I recommend putting organics or semi-organics down for slow and steady growth through the spring and maybe a touch of urea in early fall to get some good post summer recovery when temps back off their highs. Turf Builder is very low in K and has no P so make sure to get some potassium into the lawn throughout the year to keep fertilization in balance. You can cherry pick ferts to get that or just pick up a bag of straight Sulpate of Potash SOP to keep K levels in the soil. My video coming out tomorrow maybe quite helpful for you so make sure to watch it, its about taking care of a lawn for a season when it wasn't taken care of in the prior seaaon(s). Hope that's helpful!

    Would it be better to use the WeedEx in replacement of Scott’s “Step 1” in their four step program? What they have for Step 1 seems to be more of a fertilizer than a preventer. Thoughts?? Thanks.

      their step 1 product and weedex both use pendimethalin as their pre-emergent. If it was me I'd probably use the weedex before Easter and then fertilize later in April or early May separately. Their Step 2 product is a high nitrogen fert with weed killers Mecropop and 24d. This product can be overkill if you only have a few weeds in your lawn because of the pre-emergent - it's just another weed & feed product and both step 1 and step 2 are low in potassium.

    Great info. Thank you. One question - The soil temperature should be measured at what depth?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  2 роки тому +1

      Weeds are likely germinating from the top inch of soil so id measure that for PE timing but please average your temps between dawn and dusk as they will vary widely in that upper inch every 24 hours.

    Why couldn`t you do a split app of Anderson pre emerge dg instead? I have 7,500 sq ft bought a 40lb bad and applying 2.5 lb per 1 k late march then again 45 days later. I think 1 lb of product is equal to 1 month per 1k sq ft.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  Рік тому +2

      Certainly an option for split apps. IMO most people don't want to apply stuff more often than they need to. I already discuss many different things that get applied so split apps just add to complexity IMO and nothing is ever 100%. If you do a split app and have to go back and spot spray in early June then you might as well do a single app 1st of April and spot spray in early June and have less work to do. I'm also considering making a video this month on applying Mesotrione in mid-to-late winter as a short term PE followed up by a standard app of Dithiopyr in Mid Spring as a joint pre/post emergent. Lots of ways to skin a cat as they say. :)

    I seeded my lawn on April 4th with tall fescue and have my fingers crossed for germination, as it has been cold here and it is snowing right now even though it is 36 degrees out side. I am in zone 6 and the last freeze date is April 15th where I live. My plan is to spot kill with mesotrione to kill off the young crabgrass and other weeds until I can put down a preventer. That would be an application about every 2-3 weeks. I am trying to grow grass under a big oak tree in clay soil. What are your thoughts on mesotrione? This will be my first time to use it

    So if I am understanding correctly I shouldn't use a pre emergent this early in the Medford area since I planted my TTTF in late fall. The shoots are just coming up and are about an inch and shorter.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Ray, if I understand correctly, you put seed down in the fall and it germinated a while back... in the fall? Seems too early for seed to be just sprouting (January). If it all sprouted a few months back then yeah you can use a pre-emerg this Spring or late winter but if those fescue blades are less than 2.5 months old then you have to wait to use a Pendamethalin product or 4-5 months to use a prodiamine product unless you want to risk the seedlings. BTW, hope you didn't get too rained out today; I watched the weather roll over you all day today yet we got nothing over here in K-Falls. :(

      @@TurfMechanic Thanks Brian. Yeah, I planted seed in mid November before the heavy rains thinking it would be better than waiting for spring because I had to add quite a bit of topsoil and needed the rain to set everything. The shoots are about an inch and look super tender and I'm afraid to use a pre emergent. Am I thinking right? Yes, we did get a fair share of rain but everything stayed put. 🙂
