New business secretary says trade opportunities with the EU could be explored

- New business secretary Jonathan Reynolds has told Sky's Trevor Phillips, constitutional arguments - like Brexit - will not be revisited with the EU, but trade opportunities could be explored.
He said: "When it comes to trade, it's really about standards on food, we've got the same standards as the European Union.
"If we can sell more whiskey, more salmon to a market which is so significant to us of course we should explore an opportunity like that and I think moving forward to be frank, a relationship to Europe that is not determined by the internal politics of the Conservative Party is very much in the national interest."

I don't remember the media questioning whether Boris had a clear mandate in 2019 when he won the general election despite the combined vote of Labour, SNP, Greens and Lib Dem being close to 50%. Now that Labour are in government, it's suddenly not fair.

Johnson got only 29% of the electorate to vote for him and yet he got the biggest majority in 30 years.

Unfortunately, the Blair/Brown reforms of 1997-2010 are stopping a lot of necessary decisions from being made. Since then, the decision-making system is rigged towards the Left, but weirdly, the Tories did nothing to reverse those reforms. Which is what is needed.

Sure, trade opportunities could be explored... within the boundaries of the TCA. Which isn't up for negotiation, it's merely the *implementation* of the TCA that is up for *review* in 2026. European Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic explained to UK officials back in 2023 that it would only cover the implementation of the deal rather than wholesale changes. Mr Sefcovic said customs checks at the border would likely remain and stressed the TCA had not been used to its “full potential”. He said the review doesn’t constitute a commitment to reopen the TCA or to negotiate supplementary agreements. “The TCA will simply not be able to recreate any kind of notion of the single market.” The EU will welcome the return of competent adults in the UK's government. But that doesn't mean that previous agreements are subject to change.

The EU haven't moved anywhere and they aren't in the slightest bit interested in having the UK back in the club. The EU's economy has grown more than 3 times faster than the UK's since 2016 and the largest stock exchange in Europe is now based in Paris not London. Brexit has worked out very well for the EU, it's only an existential crisis for the UK. British exceptionalism convinced 17.4 million fools to vote for stupid in 2016, that same exceptionalism is now convincing some people we can return anytime we want. This is delusional thinking. If we ask really nicely we might be able to get back into the single market but that will come with a lot of conditions that the UK will find most unpalatable. Rejoining the EU is not on the cards because they won't take us back. They are sick to death of perfidious Albion and who can blame them?

Also the below mentioned rule for student and graduate visa should change.

In contrast, this charge would be applicable if they were sponsoring a Graduate visa holder."
This rule clearly encourages people coming to study here focus on not studying, but to change to a skilled worker route. In reality, the students who come here to study should actually focus on studying and then look for jobs during their graduate visa term which will allow time for them to move to a better skilled worker route employment. This step will in turn helps the government not to rely on hiring other foreign skilled workers.

In fact it is, particularly in the UKs soaring services industry. In fact, the UK has now overtaken the whole EU apart from Germany to become the worlds 4th biggest exporting nation and the worlds 8th largest manufacturer.

I like trevor philips but i think trying to eqaute avertage vote share to seats is silly. We all know the system should be ultered but to suggest reform to 800k to win a seat is trying to impose country wide popular vote onto system that does not care about it. It cares about localised popular vote. The only votes that mattered for reform were the wons that wons them seats. Is that unfair yes. But dont try and impose metrics onto a system that gives the outcome is it meant to. The system objetive is to give localised representation in a absolute manner it want over represnt parties that do well so it is easier for governemt formation. There are systems that make goventment formation a little harder and provide a element of pr and there are systems that make government formation difficult but are very represntive.

We need an effective immigration regime. Stop the boats , but don't deny asylum to people who are already in UK with lots of dreams, Allow Skilled immigrants to migrate smoothly , also more opportunities for graduates from UK universities, ( especially reducing the annual salary requirements for them) and control those low ranked universities who exploit foreigners to attract to less valued degrees, thanks

Im loving the representation of the North and women on the front bench. I dont live in the UK anymore but i am from the NW and I hope they'll be less neglected moving forwards. Angela is a huge asset.
I left for the EU after Brexit but really hope relations improve. I might come back and work for the NHS a bit if things look better in the next few years. The current deal and logistics make life difficult for EU/UK families. My partner is also in healthcare but has no right to work in the UK despite being highly qualified in rescue services and earning more than me as a nurse. The rules need to change a bit towards logic.
Starmer will have a hard time fixing a lot of the damage the Tories have inflicted on the country. Some of it will be impossible to reverse. He'll undoubtably get the blame but it won't be his fault. Outside of the single market the UK's economy is toast and there's very little he can do about that. The future is still one of managed decline but Starmer will manage that decline better than the Tories ever would. We need to manage our expectations. The damage of the last 14 years can't be solved overnight.

This is what I agreed with my girlfriend as well as a compromise.
Both ways are not practical. The EU has already said they will never go anywhere near the swiss model again as it is an unholy mess of bilateral agreements that are nigh-on impossible to manage. And the Norway model would not be accepted by the British people as it would mean paying even more than membership states and essentially being a rule taker. Norway can afford that, as they have a relatively simple structure economy - oil and fish, that's it. It wouldn't work for the diverse British economy, especially the service sector.
Norway can also afford it cause it's literally 2 times richer than UK by the GDP per capita numbers. UK nominal GDP per capita in more than 40 000 dollars and Norwegian is more than 80 000 dollars. Plus they got the biggest sovereign fund in the world, worth more than 1 trillion dollars. @@dschoene57
P. S. There's NO "just rejoining". And a LOT of Labour politicians were pro Brexit. Now they can enjoy it, together with others.

WHY NOT!? Blair left office. Brown lost an election, after the 2008 financial crisis (despite probably doing more than any other European leader to mitigate the damage). @@philthrelfall5294 may was trying to tie us to europe financially and legally to secure trade agreements, the price she was willing to pay was membership with fees but no voice. We were already sick of having to foot more than our fair share of money , for little or no return. But this opens a debate on brexit, which has been decided by popular vote. That arse cameron misjudged the people and gave the country a referendum, he said he would abide by it. He didn't ... and so he skulked off into the shadows after losing the vote. Says a lot about the type of person he is.
