    Thank you so very much! Much needed information here. What a relief after so much agony and time spent, trying to figure-out how it works! Thank you, thank you!

    Thanks so much for this! I discovered this festure years ago but never thought to put rests in Layer 3! I also end up assigning the a2, 1., 2. markings in the score only by selecting the Expression assignment. Or at this point i just use JW change.

    Dear nick, that was VERY helpful! thank you. I do wonder if you have a solution for something like this: for example in my piece, in most places it would look great to write two parts on one staff, but only at a few bars where things are complicated, it makes sense to write those two parts on separate staffs, otherwise there's just too much clutter. In this situation do i have to do the whole piece in separate staffs then?

    what if there's an instrument with a grand staff like marimba or piano, it doesn't seem to allow me to do specify voicing for instruments like that

    This video gave me an idea for a collaborative video. I’ve actually been doing this differently (wrong I’m sure). Anyway, from here the signal should be sent out to Vienna Ensemble Pro to two VSL flutes, two oboes, two horns, etc.. and a VEP template setup to accommodate this. DP could also be involved via ReWire. I’ll tell you more later. This is actually something many clients would like to see.

      Interestind idea. I have seen a video or to of people doing something similar. I think one of the key distinctions between that and the way you're referring to fixes several playback issues, and the way I describe fixes engraving/part creation issues. Though I could be misinterpreting what you're saying, I'd be curious if there's a way to combine both solutions to get optimal playback and optimal sheet music.

    Hello Nick Mazuk. I used your video above to create two instrumental parts in one stave in my current finale score project. However, I want to add a ossia part to my current trumpet(s) stave. I have to first add another trumpet part in my score, but when I add another trumpet part, this additional part alters my current trumpet 1 and 2 stave. Any suggestions?

    So with horn, I did the same thing but I had 4 total parts and I split it up two ways. Is there a way to get the "Horn" to be in a piano grand staff style text (as in for in between and to the left of the staves)?

    • @nickmazuk
      @nickmazuk  4 роки тому

      The easiest way is to create two separate normal staves then use the same as shown in the video. For the second staff, just label it Horn 3/4 instead of 1/2. If you wish to compose all 4 parts in one staff (which I often also do), then check out JW Staff Polyphony. That plugin will help you split the notes into two staves on the score.
      Anyways, great question and expect a video on this coming soon!

    Excellent! Now, it would be interesting, how you would handle cue notes for each instrument (cue notes coming most likely from the other flute respectively ... :-) ...)

    • @nickmazuk
      @nickmazuk  4 роки тому +2

      Nice question! Let's take the scenario where we're cuing the flute 1 part in flute 2.
      First, I'd create create a cue in layer 2 of the flute 1/2 staff. The "Add Cue Notes" plugin doesn't allow you to create a cue in the same staff. So you can either create the cue in Layer 2 of another staff and copy it over. When you do that copy, make sure you're viewing Layer 2 and that Document > Show Active Layers Only is selected. Or, you can create it manually by using right click > Move/Copy Layers > Copy > Layer 1 into Layer 2. Then resize the notes with Plugins > Note, Beam, and Rest Editing > Resize Notes. Again, make sure you're only viewing layer 2. You can then remove anything you don't want in the cue (perhaps dynamics, articulations, etc.)
      Second, I'd create a staff style to hide the cue in the score. With the Staff Tool, go to Staff > Define Staff Styles. New. Under Alternate Notation, select Blank Notation and set it to Layer 2. Hit OK and apply that staff style only to the score (Staff > Apply Staff Style > Current Score/Part).
      Lastly, if you want to show that the cue is in the score, I'd create a simple technique text expression saying "Cued in Flute 2" or similar.
      It may look like many steps, but it only takes a minute or two after you do it a few times.

      @@nickmazuk Thank you! Just saw your latest video, where you answer the comments - nice! Appreciated a lot!
      I would say that using layer 2 is not the best layer of choice, since layer 2 is already used for the second part, right? So it would be layer 3 for cue note for the first part and layer 4 for cue notes for the second part.
      Using an intermediary staff to prepare them would allow for the usage of Finale's CueNotes plugin, which would take care at least of the whole resizing steps and some others things.
      I have found it always very cumbersome to prepare cue notes for parts that are notated on the same staff in the score.

      Glad you enjoyed the most recent video!
      As for cueing in layer 2, I guess it depends on whether you'd want the whole rest present or not (the one that's technically required to show the player that they shouldn't play). I've personally never found it to be an issue not having that whole rest even though I know it's not technically correct. If you don't mind it either, cueing in layer 2 works well as it will show up in the correct part looking like a cue.
      If you want that whole rest, I can't think of how to do it right now…

    This is very clever. But I don't see a way to create a part where Flute1 and Flute 2 are on separate staves, which is a common way to produce orchestra parts.

  • @DavidMaurand
    @DavidMaurand 3 роки тому

    Fabulous. In this case I would explode Flute 1 and 2 but keep them on the same chart. This would likely reduce the agony of creating some cue notes.

    I followed your process exactly and it didn’t work. I was attempting to have the Flute 1/2 on the score just like you did. However, when I highlighted the “2” and entered 0.15 it did not go under the 1 on the actual score like yours did. What am I doing wrong?

    • @nickmazuk
      @nickmazuk  5 років тому

      Hmm, what measurement unit are you using? On a Mac, it's in Finale > Measurement Units. This video uses inches. Perhaps you're using something different like Picas or Spaces?

    • @JoeNathan1988
      @JoeNathan1988 5 років тому

      Well, I am using inches as well. However, I figured out that my problem is that it did not work for me because I changed to font for my instrument names. When I created a new score using the default fonts, your instructions worked perfectly. Since the font that I am using is larger, I will have to play with the numbers until I get it to fit. Thanks for showing me where to go and fix this. Jonathan

    Hello sir. Your videos have been extremely helpful. Thank you for all your detailed work. I was wondering if you have an email? I'd like to ask about working on parts for an orchestral score. I'd like to know what the most efficient way to do this. I have an orchestral score with 220 measures and about 25 instruments. It's a little tedious to work on each part individually. I'm wondering if there are some tips to be more efficient. I figured if someone knows about them, it'd be you.

      I have a short video that goes over the basics of my workflow. It also has a bunch of links to most of the resources I use. I'd definitely recommend starting there if you haven't seen it already.

      I usually work on large orchestra scores and parts as well, so my workflow is optimized for that.
