Really loved this book, I've long been a fan of the Windup Girl and some of his short stories, so I was looking forward to it. One of those books that you find yourself thinking about long after you've finished. I heard he mentioned on bluesky that he's already part-way through writing a sequel.
You know, I am not confident that this would totally be a book for me, but it sounds so refreshing and intriguing that I want to try it anyway. Also, when I first heard about the premise of this book, I thought to myself that it sounded like an Allen book, so the fact that you compare it to KJ Parker so much here makes me feel very validated hahahah. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
The further away from it, the better it is on reflection. And I already liked it quite a bit! It IS a slow book, but he's a great writer who could handle it. Not a beautiful writer, necessarily, but certainly well written. It's a great world he's made, with enough hints at bigger things to make you curious. And I like being a ways into it and not really knowing what's going to happen. A lot of fantasies can be too routine. I really hope we get more. I read originally it was just going to be a short story in that Book of Dragons anthology, but he liked it so much that he expanded it.
Sounds interesting, I haven’t seen people talking about this book. Though I’m more interested in his other book “The Windup Girl” maybe I’ll read that one first before I check out Navola
I've been meaning to read The Windup Girl for quite a few years but never got to it. I think I'll start with Navola first now if it brings vibes akin to The Folding Knife. I'll begin February with Swan's Grave Empire (haven't read his previous trilogy) then maybe continue on to Navola. Great review.
Finally someone else talks about this book! I read it last year on release and loved it, even made a video about it back then.
Read the sample after watching this review, yeah, I'm sold
One of my favourites from last year. I really hope people follow your recommendation…

I picked this up last from a discord recommendation. I am excited to try it out! The themes sound very intriguing
