For all Hollywood pushes "diversity" by swapping out existing characters, it's really just cynical tokenism. Nobody wants tokenism. We want actual representation, not some swapped out character that's portrayed as downright horrible as a human being but we're expected to swoon over how empowered it is. I want REAL wokeness: anything from the Hollywood Renaissance starring Sydney Poitier. Lynn Whitfield as Josephine Baker. Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor, Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley, Ming-Na Wen in The Joy Luck Club. What I don't want is Black Lesbian Velma Dinkley who treats everyone horribly and gets her friend railroaded on a murder charge because REASONS.
Comic book movies are glutted right now and diminishing in quality, but if we're gonna have minority superheroes, gimme Static Shock, Icon, Jon Stewart Green Lantern, a GOOD adaptation of Spawn, etc. Plenty of material to work with, but we're not getting it because Hollywood insists on swapping out existing characters.

I completely agree with him, but I don't see it working anytime soon. Even if you remove the various racisms (financial, actual, etc.) in Hollywood, you still hit another wall that is the expectations of a diverse audience. American culture doesn't expect any heritage backstory for their protagonists, but a lot of ethnicities/nationalities demand it: the culture heavily programs certain traits in their people and will experience cognitive dissociation if they don't see it.
If you have, say a young Muslim female protagonist and you see NONE of the tropes we associate with that--say her parents are liberal, no one wears a hijab, no one is seen eating specific foods, no arranged marriage is mentioned, maybe she's dating a non-Muslim and not being celibate--a lot of people from that background are going to be baffled as to why that stuff isn't in there because of its expected commonality. You might even get people upset that this character doesn't represent their life experience in ANY WAY and the character and the movie are bullshit. That will affect audience participation, and thus, the box office.
A lot of cultures make the culture/religion/etc. a defining characteristic of a person's identity and American cinema is pretty loose, even negligent with those things, and that's gonna create problems with his mission statement.

He’s spot on with his analysis. Especially the part about an ethnic character just being a character and his/her background not mentioned or involved in the story at all. I’ve been thinking the same thing for a while now. We’re making small strides towards that but still have more hurdles to go.
I even judge myself harshly when submitting for roles that say “any ethnicity” Really? And the characters name will be like Benjamin or Marcus lol. Sometimes I won’t even submit because I know the odds of them wanting a more ethnic looking actor might be slim.

His viewpoint is definitely influenced by Will Smith’s career. In his heyday, Will was playing parts that were irrelevant of race or culture. I think we’re in a slightly different landscape with different sensibilities now, so it’s a bit more difficult to find the right balance of not forcing a quota and still making sure the landscape is well represented.
My argument is that if you hate “forced diversity” in front of the camera, you should be rooting for more diverse talent acquisition behind it. We’d see less lazy, brazen race/gender/checkbox-swapping of established characters if we had more diverse, talented people creating NEW characters.

yup 100% this is exactly why people are upset about gender swaps. it changes the characters and story. And race that has a race swapped character (or gender or sexuality or whatever it is that's changed up) should be offended that instead of getting amazing, unique characters that show case what makes them awesome to the world, they get their characteristics slapped on a character that is traditionally something else. Its lazy writing from hollywood and says that they don't think is good enough to carry unique stories ... no ... they have to ride the coat tails of some other by taking on that character.
trust me ... every kind of person regardless of what box we put ourselves in is capable of carrying our own unique stories. and they should be creating unique stories and characters.
let the world fall in love with characters built from the ground up to be who they are, not what they are (unique authentic characters).

I hear what he’s saying, however the problem with what he said about alienating is that a lot of people aren’t “alienated.” They take the opportunity to engage and in a lot of cases in extreme ways to the point that it's not about the show/movie anymore. It's all over your social media app of choice (even YT). How about not watching and not talking about it? There are probably a few shows that got hate watched into more seasons. I don’t watch shows and movies I don’t find entertaining. Life is too short. I just saw someone complaining about a series that just ended and it was clear they kept up with the show for the entire run. Why? Even in this comment section somebody is complaining about a disabled black actor being used in a freaking ad and calling it “woke.”🙄. Not to mention a lot of people are selective about what kinds of “swapping” they are ok with and that makes it disingenuous.

That goes back to how they cast the actors for the movie Alien. The script or screenplay just had character names in it like Ripply. It never said male or female they gave the job to whoever was the best fit for the character. So Ripply could of just as easily been a man but they liked Sigourney Weaver for that role and the rest is how they say history. Because they just wanted the best person for those roles nothing else mattered. Not gender or race or background people just addition for those walls and got them because they were best for that role.
Same thing for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers people just additioned. For those roles and then they whore hired based on their addition. Like the one that played Zack in it the actor like the character so he wanted to addition for that character. They liked his addition so he got the job an role as Zack it had nothing. To do with the fact that the character would become the black power ranger. It was the fact that they felt that he was the best person for that role.
So back then they just basically had a character's name an nothing else. Then they looked at who additioned an went with the person that. They felt was the best person for that character same thing with the character. Trainee they never looked at race it came down to who was the best person for those roles only. They didn't even need to know any form of martial arts as long as their personality fit what the directors were looking for. Basically if someone had a personality that rubbed people the wrong way they did not get the job.

I heard that Alien was actually written with the idea that they'd all be men because subtextually it was a story about SA. That's not me reading in to it by the way, they state that is what the story was about when making it.

    • @83shadow3
      @83shadow3 Рік тому

@@Horatio787 True but just because they wrote it with the idea idea of a man. Didn't stop them from giving it to a woman they whore thinking of a man at the time. But they gave it to the best person that they thought fit that character is the point.
Unlike someone that would write for example Ripply male in the casting call. For the character they just put out a casting call for a character named Ripply. That's the difference one casting call specifically gives a gender they are looking for that character. One casting call only has the characters name. Unlike newer movies for the most part they assign a gender for the characters even before they start looking for actors. So they from the start go this is a male character and this is a female character. Then they go into even more specifics about the character. Like they look like this an are this tall an so on. But just because they wrote it thinking of a male they didn't audition. People for the role based on any specific details of the character other than the name alone.

    • @uanime1

"It never said male or female they gave the job to whoever was the best fit for the character."
The red shirt that ironically survives while everyone else dies. So the only requirement was being unknown since all the more famous actors get killed off at the start.
"Like the one that played Zack in it the actor like the character so he wanted to addition for that character. They liked his addition so he got the job an role as Zack it had nothing. To do with the fact that the character would become the black power ranger."
I suppose it's just a coincidence that the yellow ranger was also Asian and the white ranger was white.
"So back then they just basically had a character's name an nothing else."
They may not have had a detailed description of the character but the director knew what sort of person they wanted. Like in Rocky 3 they needed someone male who was intimidating for Clubber Lang. They couldn't find a boxer or actor so they looked through prisons until they found Mr T (America's toughest bouncer).
"Trainee they never looked at race it came down to who was the best person for those roles only."
Tokenism exists because people knew they needed enough people of each race to boost sales. That's why you have so many Asians and blacks in minor, reoccuring roles.
"They didn't even need to know any form of martial arts as long as their personality fit what the directors were looking for."
In Power Rangers you needed to know martial arts or gymnastics because they didn't want to hire stunt people.

I don’t mind racial diversity when it makes sense. In fact, I’m thinking about writing a book about a black detective in the 1970s. Most of the characters will be non-white. However, I don’t like it when characters are cast unrealistically or inappropriately. For example, my favorite book is Great Expectations, but in the upcoming adaptation, half the cast is black. The characters in the book were not black. It also doesn’t make any sense for British nobles and lords to be played by non-white actors, just as it doesn’t make sense to cast white actors in a film about Ancient Japan. If a casting choice takes the audience out of the story, then the filmmakers aren’t doing their job. This occurs when filmmakers discard historical accuracy and faithfulness to source material. Politics shouldn’t be placed above art.

That's not true look at independent filmmakers they put hard work an love into their movies. I have learned from many independent filmmakers audio commentaries that. There number one goal is to make a fun an enjoyable movie first. Then if it makes money they go yeay people like are movie an want to support it. But they make movies out of the love an passion for making movies so they put actual hard work an effort into those movies.
Like for example I have to use Damien Leone you may not like his movies an that's fine. But you have to at least acknowledge that he puts hard work into his movies. I have to use Damien Leone because of his character Art the Clown. Because one can literally and figuratively see the time an effort he put into creating an developing that character and world.
Because Damien Leone started it back in 2008 with a short film called The 9th Circle. Then some time later he took the nameless clown from The 9th Circle an made another short film called The Terrifier. Then made that clown the main character an gave him a name Art. Then some time later Damien Leone put both of those short films with a nother short film into one movie called All Hallows Eve in 2013. In wich Damien Leone was still trying different things out with Art the clown. So that stuff is non cannon when it comes to Art the Clown but. Damien Leone took things he liked from The 9th Circle an The Terrifier an All Hallows Eve then stat down an came. Up with a solid concept and story idea for Art the clown an wrote the official cannon start of Art the Clown. That being the script or screenplay for Terrifier 2016 then it was the matter of raising the money to make the movie an release the movie. So Damien Leone put alot of hard work an effort into the character Art the Clown an that world. Starting way back in 2008 so some people are still doing the hard work as. I have proven with all the time an effort that Damien Leone put into creating Art the clown an that world.
So the only ones that don't want to do the hard work are the people in mainstream media an mainstream Hollywood. Because they can just copy or piggyback off of someone else preexisting movie IP. Then get their movie green lit automatically from mainstream Hollywood and mainstream media.

I totally agree with him. The 2017 live action Ghost in the Shell movie disappointed many fans of the manga series and the anime movie, as well the selections of mini series, because they took the 1995 anime movie and destroyed it in replotting the story. By changing the races of the characters, they changed the plot of the story; this story takes place in Japan--not some other country where Americans are acceptable--meaning the cast should fit the origin of the characters to keep the story original. Major Kusanagi should have been a Japanese actress instead of Scarlett Johansson to keep the story in line with her character.

Someone said "it's not a real person. It's fine to change it" so I said "well what about the TV drama about Henry the 8th, and one of his wives being black in it?"... same person replied "its a testament to her acting, and being able to pull it off"... makes NO sense. So I asked if it would be OK for Goldie Hawn to play Nelson Mandelas wife. They said "no, because part of who she is, is black" 🤷‍♂️
    You just can't win.
Why do these people keep making movies, where its obvious to fans they gender or race swap for P.C reasons. The people behind the movie KNOWS we know. Yet they make it anyway, knowing it will flop. What's the insensitive to keep churning them out?

There's another video on this channel that explains why. It's because producers are more concern with keeping their jobs.
If a producer invests time, money and effort into a projects that flops but they made sure to check all the boxes (diversity, being CCP compliant, being part of an existing franchise, etc) then they can justify themselves to their bosses about how they did everything by the book, so fire them is unjustifiable. The opposite is riskier for them, if they take risks like trying a completely original story and that flops, then their bosses can justifiably fire them. So, they have more incentives to go the "safe" route and produce shitty movies

Can someone tell this guy that he is not Asian? He is mixed race part European part Asian, it's wrong to identify himself and bias towards one ethnicity if he is mix of more than one. When half Asian half European call himself just Asian and forgetting his European part it's racism against Europeans and its alienating Europeans. For example Keanu Reeves is part Asian but more European, yet he doesn't claim he is Asian, actually he doesn't tell anything about his ethnicity, despite he is mixed race, that's why everyone likes him and he appeals both to Europeans and Asians, and while he has more European look you can see some rudimentary Asian features in him, but nobody cares about that, he is just great person and actor. Why I'm I bringing Keanu? He is from Hawaii just like interviewed guy, but he doesn't claim to be Asian!!! And I clearly see that this has a litt more of Asian mixture than Keanu, but still I see him more as European, and I feel that he hates and disrespect his European majority of his genes and predecessor, when he calls himself Asian, and I feel like he hates and disrespects Europeans and respects Asians more with that behavior. And then he talks about alienating people. Dude should stop calling himself Asian and should start respecting his European part of himself and should show respect to European audience by acknowledging that he is more European than Asian, or at least by calling himself part European part Asian.
He claims to be not part of this anti-white woke Hollywood agenda, that alienates majority, yet he acts like one of those anti white racist. The only thing is better about him is that he does not do race swap and do his own thing, but still his own thing is alienating because of reason mentioned above. Instead of making movie about people who are suitable for context he pushes asians and distance himself from Europeans. That's wrong, way of thinking like that is the reason majority of people in the world (who are actually still white European or part white European) hates this woke Hollywood and its anti white propaganda.
Back in old days even Asian actors and directors who came to Hollywood did not push their ethnicity and worked with local mostly white actors, John Woo is great example, he did good Asian movies, but they wqs still somewhat alienating to non Asians, when he came to Hollywood he used his Asian style but shoot European looking actors and did great movies whole world loved. Now imagine what could happen if he comes to Hollywood and keep shooting mostly Asians in his movies? He would alienate majority!
