Nightwish Ghost Love Score was released on the album "Once" on 7 June 2004 which was before this song. The lead singer of Epica is called Simone and she is very good friends with Floor. They have done a couple of collaberations in the past. The founder of Epica is Mark Jansen (no relation to Floor) who founded the band after his departure from 'After Forever' which is a band that Floor was in 😊

Thank you for sharing all this info Mark. Okies so Ghost Love Score was released on the album before this song, that disproved my theory on this song inspiring GLS. Lol. But the history Simone, Floor, and Mark share, they probably influence each other quite a bit 🩷

@@BessyQ Yes. this song was sung by Nightwish's first singer Tarja. Their next singer was Anette, and then Floor joined the band in 2012 like you said
Once you get to know more bands you will come to see that in Symphonic Metal pretty much everybody knows everybody and they often collaborate together

Ghost Love Score was released after this song not before. Sensorium is from the 2003 (5 june) album named The Phantom Agony. This video was recorded on May 4, 2006 and released only in 2022 because of copyright issues.

Epica's quivalent of GLS (in terms of complexity and epicness) would be their song "Serenade of Self-Destruction", which is an absolute masterpiece. It's heavier than GLS but it has a beautiful melody, deep lyrics, great guitar-work and drumming, and of course, gorgeous soprano by Simone, especially during the epic chorus.
For those who have never heard Serenade before, go for studio version with lyrics, just to make sure you can hear all instruments and especially the choir, because the live version is not mixed very well.

As you continue your symphonic metal journey, you will find many of these singers are closely connected. Both Simone and Floor are from The Netherlands. Other great female singers from there are Diane van Giersbergen, Charlotte Wessels, and Sharon den Adel.
This was an early song for Epica. To see Simone in her full voice, you need to watch some newer videos. I recommend listening to Unleashed live at Retrospect, and for a song that will make you get goosebumps, Rivers (ft Apocolyptica) from AFAS.

New to your channel, and subscribed after seeing this fun reaction! Here's hoping that you continue delving into Epica. Their newer stuff in maybe more prog-like (see "The Skeleton Key" or "Kingdom of Heaven, part III", Omega Alive version of both preferably). Their older material is more goth rock, leaning on 90's bands like Tristania.
Remember, music is not a competition. No one is a yardstick for anyone else. These songs are compositions, and if the performance lives up to the artistic intent then the performance is a success. Making it seem like there is some sort of rivalry between two singers is doing a disservice to both.

Hi Bessy, nice reaction! When you are ready to experience some metal outside the symphonic metal sub genre, I'd recommend the japanese all female bands Lovebites and Nemophila. Because you said you are not into screaming/growling: Lovebites don't growl or scream. The singer of Nemophila doesn't growl, but does some screaming in most songs. I'm not really into screaming and growling myself, but somehow their singer makes it work for me. For Lovebites I recomend the songs "Holy War", "Set The World On Fire" or "Edge of the World", but the don't really have a bad song. Their live versions are usually better than the music videos.
For Nemophila I would go with "Adabana" (great music video) or "Life" (more mellow, no screams).

I recommend the song Seif al din live at paradiso or perhaps even more fascinating Chasing the dragon live Restrospect with live orchestra and choir... I promise you that you will be fascinated.. unlike many other bands, epica never disappoints and always surprises..

As a big fan of Epica and Simone, I suggest that you don't make comparisons, they can be very annoying! Besides, NW and Epica are not similar at all, they belong to the same subgenre but their styles are very distinctive. And both Simone and Floor are wonderful singers who possess an uncommon vocal range. (You haven't heard anything from Simone yet) Interesting facts about Epica: Mark (grumpy guitarist) and Simone were a couple in the early days of the band, which is why they always maintained an incredible chemistry on stage.
And for long and progressive masterpieces of Epica, I recommend the trilogy of "Kingdom Of Heaven". Greetings! 💙

@@BessyQ Epica is in a league of their own. This band will blow your mind! It's the best what you can hear (and see) in the symphonic metal subgenre over the last decade or so.
I second the recommendation for "Chasing the Dragon" from the Retrospect, but please find the video uploaded by Jubran, which has English subtitles in it, so you can read the song lyrics while watching/listening to it.
DO NOT stop listening to Epica after 2-3 songs! I'm serious. You would miss out on a lot of incredible music. Epica is a whole journey. They have 8 full studio albums and each of them is filled with amazing songs. I'm glad you started with Sensorium because that's from their debut album. You can either proceed to newer albums in a chronological order, or just jump randomly, it's up to you.
Also, Epica is heavy but it has many wonderful ballads that will melt your heart. Would you like to hear some of them?

    • @Divide_et_lmpera
      @Divide_et_lmpera 7 місяців тому +1

@@BessyQ Btw "Sensorium" is a beautiful but simple song. You can't compare it to Ghost Love Score in terms of complexity.
Epica's equivalent of GLS would be Serenade of Self-Destruction (it's also the same length).
Check it out, preferably some Lyric version (not live), so you can hear the choir and all other instruments properly because the live version is not mixed very well.

Now, this one is a collab with another band, and I recommend it mostly for Simone's stunning vocal performance:
Apocalyptica & Epica - Rise Again (Official video)
and here, one of their greatest ballads:
Epica - Tides of Time - for this one I would strongly suggest a fan-made lyric video by Elimeleh69. Can you search for it?
Can you please write it down somewhere, so you don't forget? I hope you're going to react to them asap!
Always nice to see new people discovering this incredible band and goddess Simone. Bear in mind, Epica is not a band with just a couple big hits.
