- Tails is anything but a consistent character. Sometimes he's absolutely clutch and saves Sonic's life, and other times he's completely helpless and needs Sonic to baby him.
Today, we're looking at Tails' character in every mainline Sonic game and ranking him from worthless to elite.

CORRECTION: You CAN play as Tails by himself in Sonic 2, he plays the same as Sonic and can’t fly, but he’s more independent than I initially thought. Still though, I’d keep him in sidekick tier.
clearly on Sonic 2 he always works a lot better when being with Sonic except sometimes on special stages ☠
So despite being completely independent and beating Robotnik without Sonic, he's still just a sidekick. Damn.
You forgot to include Tails's own games or how important he is in side games like Sonic Riders.
I thought Tails was just the 2 player character so the little brother can play, and it doesn't matter if he dies. That's my vague memory anyway.

Eh I feel like you kind of did adventure 2 tails dirty. That one mistake where he gets outsmarted by Eggman (who was a genuine threat in that game) doesn’t really overshadow how Tails feels more like an equal to Sonic.
Carrying over his independence arc from Adventure 1. He goes on a rescue mission to save Sonic from the military captivity and even Amy from eggman. He comes up with plans. He stroms into Eggman’s hidden base to find the entrance. After he gets tricked, he still undoes it by fulfilling Sonic’s presumed final wish to stop eggman. Sonic trusted him to take care of the rest.
Let's not forget Cannon's Core.
Yeah, without Tails the story would've been over by City Escape.
Not to mention Tails wouldn't have made the mistake if it wasn't by Amy who got kidnapped by second time in that game 💀

Actually, you don't even need to do that. A second player can control him on the player 2 controller.

Honestly, Tails not trusting Eggman is very justifiable, not cause of jealously, but cause...he's Eggman. And the fact that Eggman betrays both of them at the end only makes Tails more justified.
Okay, but at the same time, the benefit of the doubt is also a reason to somewhat trust him. He wants his stuff back and is putting aside the grudge with them to achieve that. If Sonic simply said: "It's obvious you wanna betray us, can we just skip that and come back to it another day?" Eggman probably would have!

Not gonna lie I feel Forces did Tails *DIRTY.* Tails had PTSD when base Chaos showed up. When Tails had taken on Chaos 4 & Egg mech in Adventure. It’s so bad that he even talks about it in Frontiers
He did fight Chaos 4, but he did not do it alone, Sonic and Knuckles fight alongside as well
Yeah, but in his campaign he technically fought Chaos 4 on his own since there wasn’t really a team-battle mechanic in there yet.
Sonic Forces is the culmination of everything wrong with the Pontac Era and Tails’ butchered characterisation is a prime reason since he’s prominent in the campaign. I think it’s unanimous that Forces Tails is the worst appearance of the character bar none.

I'd argue that Frontiers Tails deserves to be a little higher for the development he got. Tails didn't get an arc on par with his Adventure story, but it's great for him to learn that he's still a capable hero in his own right and acknowledge how useless he's been in the past few games, or "wildly inconsistent" as he puts it.
Which is weird in my opinion because like He helps a lot...but I will agree, Lost World and Forces were terrible!

I love the fact that Frontiers pretty much pointed out the Forces issue and fixed it.
You forgot "Sonic Battle". If you play Tails' story there is a part where he literally kicked Shadow's ass just to protect Emerl.
He beat a weakened Shadow who wasn't trying but impressive nonetheless.

Yes, but tails becoming indépendant and a capable hero is a character arc that takes time, and that scene happened at the very start of the game. That scene was used to show that tails isn’t indépendant at the start of the game
The Perfect Plan
Sonic Adventure era Tails was definitely the peak of his character. The story of him coming out of Sonic's shadow and becoming a brave, strong, independent hero in his own right was great writing and was solidified in the second game

Yeah... I think Sonic's arrogance might have influenced him in Lost World... mostly cause Sonic was as cocky as Tails was in it.
What about reprogramming a supercomputer with dishwashing detergent and a toothpick? It's like he's making his own Chuck Norris-style memes but about his intelligence.

In Forces he is fixing up longtime ally E-123 Omega since E-102 Gamma has been dead since Sonic Adventure.
In Adventure 2 Tails doesn't play identically to Sonic which is a fantastically good thing. The whole point of him using a mech like Eggman does is to simulate the intellectual battles of wits between the two. They're the tacticians and the engineers. It's what they do!
In Sonic Rush Tails is basically Sonic's Mission Control so he's more of the "barely does anything" since he establishes key information with Sonic and helps make him generally aware of what's going on and how to stop it even if he doesn't get involved himself.
Gotta be real, Tails should get some points in Rush for cheering you on during the boss fights. It’s genuinely such a cute addition.
The worst part about tails not being able to defend himself from chaos 0 in sonic forces, is that he was able to defeat chaos 4 in sonic adventure 1…
In Sonic 4 Ep 1, the rocket Sonic used to get to space was clearly made by Tails, due to it having his tails on it.
1:20 hes not useless AT ALL. As you said, he literally takes us to special stages to get the chaos emeralds, the main thing to collect in most of the games. It helps you go super so, thats not really useless. I would at least put him below sidekick

Ngl you did Tails pretty dirty with the frontiers ranking, completely glossed over his character arc. How he’s realized how useless he’s been lately and affirming he’s going to work to change that. Probably one of Tails’ biggest moments in several games. And if you include the “alternate story” update, he helps collect the chaos emerald through the first gameplay of him in a 3D mainline game in over a decade. He at least deserves elite
Let's be honest here, realizing that he has been useless in the past last games isn't a character arc. It is himself finally arriving to the start line. One that he LEFT way behind in the early games (not to mention Tails Adventure, where, depending on the version, he either saved an achipelago while he was on holydays from his adventures with Sonic... or he was already a badass before even meeting with Sonic). Sure, so long as Team Sonic actually follows through, it gets the way to his actual character arc ready... but it's not one.

Tails surprisingly has the best combat in Boom, and he's a key role in many stages where he's 100% needed to open doors or getting to out of reach buttons with his buddy bots, he's got flying vents only he can use, also only Tails & Sonic can hydrodash, and Tails was able to free the gang when they got trapped with Lyric's attack. Bad game but Tails is really helpful / most helpful and I'd say I'd give him elite for being a core member for progression and constant involvement.

since spinoffs weren't included, sonic battle wasn't included-- sonic battle being one of tails' most useful appearances. tails fixes emerl, has some incredible moves for emerl to use (one of them being the best aerial) incredibly strong projectiles, and he hosts the VT.
I genuinely think that the ranking for Sonic Adventure 2 was kinda unfair and that you should have put him in sidekick tier because I don't think that he's initially the reason how Eggman knew. I think in the game, he's just trying to make Tails feel bad. I'd give him a sidekick tier.
Lost world tails is such a wierd ass character , he has a such a big ego and is so smug, but his ego is so big and easy to fracture

You can actually play as Tails in OG Sonic 2 by going to options and choose Tails alone (yes you can play as Sonic alone aswell if you want) though he can't fly in that until the next game.

He said at the start he is doing mainline games. Tails’s own games and sonic riders aren’t main line.
So, whole thing about Frontiers, that update is specifically a story change, and since it seems like Sonic Team and Sega prefer that ending, it feels like it's safe to say that it's the canon one. If that's the case, he's easily an Elite tier, helping Sonic by collecting the emeralds with Amy and Knuckles, and even helping with the defense in the final battle. Also wanted to say that there are quite a few games I'm a little sad were left out, like Sonic Battle, which as also for the GBA, or the GameGear games, with two of his own game that would definitely let him be Elite. Still a fun video though.
Maybe when Saga makes Sonic's version of Tears Of The Kingdom. Tails will more useful like his Nintendo Counterpart Tulin.
Wait, they haven't confirmed whether or not the Final Horizon DLC is canon? I figured the whole point of them making that was because of fans complaining about how underwhelming the original final boss was, so that was their way of fixing it.
I would be surprised if it was only a "What If?" scenario, considering a bunch of the dialogue with Sage and the other characters has some pretty big lore implications for the future of the series. Why put all that in there if it amounts to nothing?
@utopian4769 It's kind of a toss up, but I will say that the implications do seem to point more towards it being canon. I'd say it's canon, and maybe Ian Flynn said something about it, but I don’t really watch his BumbleKast thing, so I'm not 100% sure. I'm with you though when it comes to it being a surprise if it's not the canon ending.

I think you're underrating Tails in Adventure 2. When Sonic gets locked up, the first thing Tails does is turn the Tornado into a flippin mech, flies to a maximum security prison and bulldozes his way through while also chasing Eggman off. Tails was a badass in that game.

Skipped over Sonic 3 and Knuckles version of Tails where he's every bit as good as Sonic 3's Tails but with the added bonus of becoming Super Tails.

6:41 did you know that: if you connect a second controller, player 2 can actually control Tails if you selected him with sonic in mania mode (Found out on a xbox one, and didnt test this with the &Knuckles option, probably doesn't work in Encore mode iirc)
Disagree with 3d blast since you go to tails to get choas emeralds to get the true ending. Also in Adventure 2, your opinion on tails gameplay has literally nothing to do with anything. Sonic wouldn't be able to anything without tails help.

To be fair, if you include narrative instead of focusing purely on gameplay, you could make an argument that sonic needed tales to defeat Eggman in sonic 2. He would’ve never gotten to the flying Fortress if tails didn’t fly them up there, and in the bad ending tails actually saves sonic’s life.

I'd say he's Elite in Chronicles just because he's your first healer and is pretty solid at the role. And textbook "brains" tier for The Murder.
There’s something he did in SA2 that you forgot that would bring him down for me. While it’s unknown which parts of hero and dark are canon in the story like who actually won the boss fights between two characters. But after the 2nd Tails Eggman fight in the final Hero cutscene Eggman is laying on the floor and Tails LITERALLY left the final Chaos Emerald laying a on the floor right next to him! Sure it didn’t matter in the end, but it doesn’t change the fact that Tails left it on the freaking floor for Eggman to just take. It’s debatable if that actually happened or if Eggman defeated Tails in that fight, since we don’t know exactly which story ending of the two is canon. But I still feel like that was worth mentioning.

was the frontiers part of this script written by an ai. tails only appears in chaos island and does nothing during that whole part and at the end when he saves sonic. so barely does anything but that’s the plot of frontiers so it makes sense. but he deserves elite of we are counting final horizon because he is vital to getting two of the chaos emeralds while sonic is mastering the cyber corruption.
I luv how nobody ever talks about how tails in the begging of wing fortress zone in sonic 2 gets SHOT DOWN and sonic is just like nope and in s&k after doomsay zone tails SAVES Sonic on the torando

Actually Jeremy Klinger You could've played as tails in Sonic CD by using a glitch so all you have to do is start a game as Tails, exit, then go to Stage Select and choose a zone. And that's how you get Tails in Sonic CD
And I believe tails is a regular playable character in CD 2011 port

In Sonic heroes tails might not be too different from the other fly types but that doesn’t take away from the fact he’s absolutely useful for the team in platforming. In terms of battle, at lvl 1 he can crowd control but at lvl 3 he obliterates enemies and wipes bosses
I know this probably wasnt intentional but i think sonic 3 builds tails's character let me explain, when we first meet tails in sonic two he cant carry sonic but he does fly back into scean if you run away from from him, next in the start of sonic 3 tails can now carry sonic showing he's gotten stronger but theres a limit for how long he can, now heres the part i like to think if intentional is amazing character development for being an old game. In the third stage Eggman boss fight given your playing sonic, Eggman destroys the grownd and tails has to carry sonic. tails carries you way beyond his limit showing his dedication to his friend sonic and how far he can truly push himself

Tails is playable in cd or at least the mobile version, but I can forgive you for how good the video is.
So... Sonic & Knuckles _on its own_ doesn't let you play as Tails. However, the game is a lock-on cartridge that lets you connect Sonic 3 on top of it, allowing you to play through both games in the way they were originally intended (they're actually two halves of one bigger game), while also unlocking new features like the Super Emeralds and hyper forms, the ability to use any of the playable characters throughout the whole game, new team-ups (Sonic + Knuckles and Knuckles + Tails) and even a super form for Tails that's unlocked alongside the hyper forms.

First off, he is playable in Sonic 2. But he basically plays just like Sonic, except he can’t go Super if you get all the Emeralds.
He considers Tails to be a liability in SA2… but that’s more of a gameplay thing. I actually like the mech stages, myself, and Tails never really felt like a liability to me in it. The only real negative here is him falling for Eggman's bluff… but keep in mind Eggman is also a genius, and while it does almost get Sonic killed, he then kicks Eggman's ass. Saving both himself and Amy. He also did a lot of the work to save Sonic from prison.
Sonic Forces… Gamma isn’t in that game. That’s Omega. A character who has been in many more games than Gamma has.
