9:58 Techno IS the supervillain, and he actually embraces this role going forward, during Minecraft Mondays he was ABSOLUTELY the bad guy, and he knew it and embraced it.

If Paul thinks that Techno is insane because of the potatoes, I don't think we should tell him about the orphans and the anarchy
Exactly.
He’s not ready
He never needs to know
he’ll find out in due time
True! But Techno is just the second worst thing that ever happened to those orphans! 😂
I love how everyone's first reaction to SquidKid in this video is that he's actually like 12 years old when in reality he was in college during the time this was recorded
lmao, it keeps happening, doesn't it?
i mean he has kid in his name so although its probably just an old account it leads people to believe he is younger than he is

This. I think Paul's just maintaining a joke, but it's just poorly conceptualized, given that Techno is always using math AND history.
@@SuperiorPosterior I haven't seen his history, but I think he really might just be under a misunderstanding and actually thinks Techno doesn't like math. Could be wrong though.
@@Funnywargamesman techno always quotes Sun Tzu lol I'm guessing that's the history they mentioned

@@starcycle4308 The reference to the pillar was because an ancient Chinese emperor ( forgot his name,) escaped an assassination by running in a circle around a piller. :D sorry if you figured that out already!
I was thinking about this sort of dynamic, cause Technoblade is so chaotic, and cites Sun Tzu at a lot of opportunities.
Making an otherwise peaceful endeavor seem warlike is amusing due to the juxtaposition. It's a very common comedic trope.
@@enderoctanus i love how the vets review is genuine and serious, it just adds to the comedy

People hate math because they usually don't see it as useful or don't see the problem it's helping them solve. Competing with another man's potato output? That's fun. That's entertaining. That isn't being given homework to do for the sake of doing homework.
Yeah, a big problem with school is that the whole is system is set to make children memorize stuff for the sake of doing it. Instead of giving them more context and a reason to learn. Kids dont care about their future or professional careers. Now when I learned that you can program a pikachu's thunderbolt arch with a quadratic equation, then I got interested.
@@DenerWitt can u tell me how to calculate
the arc using the quadratic equation?
I simply hate math because I suck at it.
@@qball331 My point is that if it were enjoyable you might get a lot better than you'd expect at it. I was convinced I was bad at college algebra until I had this really old black lady teach it, and it just fucking made sense, I don't know how or why. She didn't use all that fancy technology like computers to show shit, she did it all on the whiteboard. It was great.
Now imagine using that to play an engaging video game, it doesn't feel like work.
Personally I hate math just cause of the homework, it’s a grudge that I will not drop

“I think techno is the supervillain” broski you haven’t seen the other two potato war vids, it gets worse XDDD
3:28 There is a game called Foxhole where it simulates every aspect of warfare including having players be dedicated to managing logistics and production.
Ive kept reccomending Foxhole to him before. Lets make this a reality and make him react to Moidawg's War 83 series.
It would be cool if he did. I’ve been a long time Foxhole Player, so I would enjoy a video on it.
Idk what Foxhole but it’s sound fun!
So, in a previous video, Paul mentioned something about a ""potato war", and I was asking myself "what the hell is he talking about?". But now, now I understand.
'The Art of War' was written on the tail end of a transition from ritualistic duels and small scale conflicts between feudal lords of petty regions commanding a few hundred men, to grand campaigns of conquest where armies numbered in the hundreds of thousands and the civilian casualties often numbered the same as a consequence. Reading Sun writings with this context makes it a much more logical political commentary, where he is trying to convince the ruling class to adopt a more pragmatic approach to war. Nowadays, most of the stuff in the Art seems obvious, but people often used to do the exact opposite things back then, due to how the lords of the land often approached war as a means of settling matters of honor. The teachings of Sun Tsu was NOT super welcomed at the time, and there was even a derivative work where the Generals is made out to be more honorable, pluss a lot of 'the heart of the people' bs ('Wu Tsu' as "Teachings of Wu" as opposed to Sun, there's a whole rabbithole of why the Art is named as it is).
So anyways, here's your reminder that ancient text/modern media can only be as complex and nuanced as the consumer allows. :) sorry about the wall of text :P
Thank you for the explanation! Brilliant
And of course it's helpful for when trying to win a potato war on Skyblock
It is crazy how far techos content has come..rip legend, Techonblade never dies, he will forever live on in our hearts and hopefully we will get to watch his old content for many years to come. Techonblade's dad posted his last statement to us last night..Never forgotten Potato King
Watch Potato War 2 and Potato War 3, it gets even more insane.
I'm going to be honest I wasn't thinking you were going to ever react to technoblade he is a man so legendary that when he thought he was going to lose an arm he was already planning jokes and how he would kick people's ass with one arm because he is not just a man he is a God...
hes the blood god and the voices will forever demand blood!!! preferably the blood of goverments or orphans.
9:38 He's also occupying his spare time just making pixel art of famous paintings while his automated farms do their thing. Admittedly, pretty cool seeing stuff like that in Minecraft because those kinds of builds take a lot of time to do.
35:28 Never played on the Hypixel server. All I do know is those are just named villager NPCs that serve some form of use in the server.
I have. Hypixel Skybock is a total conversion and overhaul for Minecraft that turns it into an MMORPG, including overzealous Admins. What's mildly cool about it is that it's completely Vanilla AFAICT.
The rest of the Hypixel server is mostly minigames and people that, whenever Skyblock ist taken offline for maintenance and updates, complain that it is down.
@21:52 It's worth noting, while German production did increase, the quality went down: tanks that should have been "impervious" to Shermans at anything beyond close range could be, and were, penetrated because of low steel quality, even from the front. German ammunition also had to switch to steel instead of brass, which could create issues like galling in the weapons, and potentially over-pressure related issues, reducing the lifespan of barrels and possibly causing reliability problems, along with reduced accuracy. The Germans managed to somewhat address the bullet problem with waxing, but the bullets had to be rewaxed at the front, which was a complication the soldiers really didn't need.
“Dystopian Skyscraper of Potato Farming”
The best thing I have ever heard
okay, this is not vanilla Minecraft so everything is different, in skyblock, a potato is worth 1 coin, an enchanted potato is crafted with 160 potatoes and an enchanted baked potato is 160 enchanted potatoes, its a game where you have to grind a lot and instead of just the vanilla armors like leather, iron, diamond they have emerald, dragon, necromancer armors and every single thing is custom
crafts, mobs, stats, inventories, etc. in the time of this video 50m coins were only something the richest had, nowadays top players get that in a few hours, with billions in net worth
and Jerry is multiple things in the game, Mayor, helper, and the thing everyone wants to kill for some reason
At 6:20 I agree with the argument that an 8 month return on investment is good, but in a situation where a ‘skyblock day’ is 20 minutes and techno’s talking about 8 months in real life, the ‘good investment’ idea becomes futile.
Serious real life analysis of block game conflicts are my new most favorite thing on youtube
32:13 You're actually wrong. Sun Tzu does advocate respecting your enemy. In fact, he advocates respecting your enemy while making them disrespect, and therefore underestimate, you.
Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak.
If your enemy is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is temperamental, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. If sovereign and subject are in accord, put division between them. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.
Engage people with what they expect; it is what they are able to discern and confirms their projections. It settles them into predictable patterns of response, occupying their minds while you wait for the extraordinary moment - that which they cannot anticipate.
If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.
Thus we may know that there are five essentials for victory:
1 He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.
2 He will win who knows how to handle both superior and inferior forces.
3 He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks.
4 He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared.
5 He will win who has military capacity and is not interfered with by the sovereign.
When strong, avoid them. If of high morale, depress them. Seem humble to fill them with conceit. If at ease, exhaust them. If united, separate them. Attack their weaknesses. Emerge to their surprise.
All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.
When you surround an army, leave an outlet free. Do not press a desperate foe too hard.
TL;DR he's wrong lol
wow im getting recommended this 2 years later..
The 'Jerry's are npc guides that spawn in for new players, for some reason they just keep spawning in Techno's word
And Jerry is also cinsidered the comedic character in Skyblock, due to the existence of Aspect of the Jerry

The more you get into the war, you get into more stuff like "studying the enemy" and he gets into the psychological warfare against Squid kid...it gets more intense and fascinating...
The other two parts are far more competitive, because now SquidKid knows there's a war on.
21:50 One thing worth noting is that while the german's war material production capabilities increased, the strategic bombing did seem to cause a massive decrease in quality. So even if quantity was unaffected, it at least made their weapons, vehicles, ect less reliable and thus less effective. Which given how prone to breaking down their vehicles already were, basically made them into piles of scrap in certain cases.
He didn't say he didn't like math, he just said it wouldn't be enough.
18:00 I actually do breed rabbits that compound expansion is no joke and its WAY higher than 5%. I started the first year with 3 rabbits and they had 26 babys (could of had more but had a bad winter). I kept all the females and bought some males to breed them to, so I went from 3 rabbits to 19 in a year. When spring rolled around I started breeding, by fall I had had over 100 rabbits bred. I was filling my freezer with meat and practically giving it away by that point, cant wait for spring to roll around and breed even more.
Do you sell them or just doing it for fun ?
@@HungLe-km2wo originally got into it due to pandemic supply line fears, now sell due to over supply of rabbits
I think you really underestimate how good serfdom could be for the serf. There were freemen who petitioned to have their legal status changed by a court to that of a serf because it had advantages, primarily the fact that they might be able to work much better land. If you are given a hill and told to grow barley, you're gonna have a bad time. If you are given a floodplain, you're laughing your way to a bountiful and easy harvest. You also had certain rights (at least in Britain) guaranteed by the king. If your lord whipped you he could have his land taken from him and you might get restitution from the courts. Also they weren't allowed to take your land for basically any reason. Underhanded schemes happened but weren't common. Serfs had a sort of pride to them. Serfdom was seen as VERY distinct from slavery, as slaves did exist in this period, but were largely abolished in most places (again primarily talking about Britain).
I guess what I'm saying is, serfdom sucked ass for some people but worked out super well for others, just like any system including modern work environments. If you were used to working the land all your life and would be doing so whether you were a serf or a freeman, it probably wasn't a very bad deal at all to swear fealty to your lord for added bonuses.
It's also important to note that serfdom always had complications: there were serfs who were barely better off than slaves, villiens who had a fair amount of economic freedom, English Freeman who were basically Serfs with more rights (along with Yeoman, who had enough money to actually BE free,) and so on.
Nor were the Serfs necessarily as chained to the land as one might think: serfs who escaped to the city might be considered free after a year, and lords who were considered to have failed their feudal obligations (like through excessive taxation,) might find another lord taking their serfs, or even the land itself.
Please watch the other two if you get a chance! I love the psychological warfare Techno pulls.
It gets even better in the 2nd and 3rd videos, there's a lot more tactics and logistics and it's insane.
The "Very normal behavior" spreadsheet is the best part
Hey, this was really good! I highly recommend the other two entries, because there’s significantly more logistics and psychological warfare you could break down

Well, the idea isn't knowing the enemy's identity, but how they think, act, and react. If you know that and know how to use it against them, the result is pretty much set in stone before the fight even starts. Hence, "If you know your enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the results of 100 battles"
"This is a lie, my advice isn't obvious, you're obvious" - Sun Tzu, it should be noted that historians have no idea who he was talking to since it seemed he attempted to scribble this in english to some commander, possibly to someone in the future.
The way schools teach just sucks the fun out of everything. Even my friends that genuinely enjoy high level math hate doing it for school.
Just for context, the reason people called a helper to Squid’s island, and I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong, but they thought he was using something called afk macros which to my knowledge wasn’t allowed. That is completely sunk cost fallacy. He had sunk hours into it already and knew he had the option to drop it and work on something else or keep doing what he was doing for months
Sadly he will never be able to farm potatoes again 😭
I guess a very good example for the Sunk Cost Fallacy for UA-camrs would be Markiplier, he was uploading to YT while in College for Engineering and he was just a few months away from Graduation, and he was put in a dilemma whether to go YT full time or Graduate and have a career job.
You see this right now and it hits different. Not going to say why.
There's a difference between knowing who your enemy is, and knowing their every plan, this is truly knowing your enemy.
Just wait until you can reach the third arc of the potato war. It escalates and is wonderful.
rip the king. He will be remembered forever
One comment I have is that a miniature economy will be going a lot faster than a large scale real life one. The economy in Hypixel Skyblock is clearly unstable, not to mention that potatoes in this game aren't really used for a lot of different things. This is why the return is so slow on an investment considering how fast things normally play out in video games. You ideally want be producing at a level that meets the current demands of the economy so that you can sell your product quickly. Because of the limited uses of potatoes, and because people can farm them themselves, the profit made quickly diminishes for the amount of money and effort put in over time, as you would need to craft the hot potato books, which are the consumables crafted from potatoes that is being sold here, you would need to craft them individually, so it's not as if he's taking an inactive role. The effort required isn't worth the money won, and would be a bad investment. the only reason Technoblade did this was for the title of the number one potato farmer, as making money wasn't worth the effort considering the volatile economy and excessive effort
tbh i think tsun zu was more of the deeper meaning of shit when he was saying stuff like "know your enemy to know yourself"
As someone who has played this for 2 years this amount of potatoes and coins spent is a bit ton I’d say with the gem system you can get around 6 coins for 10$
Would love to see a break down of Potato War 2 and 3 where he competes with Squid kid and they both sabatoge, hire spy’s, etc.
You should do the other two parts, this is just the tip of the potato-berg.
I am unreasonably amused at the thought of a giant potato just floating upright in the ocean...
Just want to point out that the art of war by Sun Tuz is so much more than what Paul said in the video:
-It is one of the earliest book about war and affected many books about war later on.
-The quotes potato farming dude used he was reacting are actual quotes from Sun Tzu.
•The art of war doesn’t provide exact strategies but what more like a simple formula which you can find useful even in the most complicated expressions. If you can’t even understand the surface/ basic of the formula, you can’t break down complicated expressions, the simple formula may also have varieties.
Often people missed these obvious facts(e.g. know your enemy) and leads to failure, what it says may seems like “common sense” but if you can have an in depth understanding of the art of war, you might be able to use it to the finest (which most people cannot) you would find them useful in basically all situations(even in daily social situations).
Extra fun fact: know thyself and thy enemies is not the only sentence in the quote(which is why it seems like basic fact and Paul find it not useful)
_If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred_ (not literally a hundred it’s a metaphor of “a lot”) _battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle._
^This is the best translation in my understanding.
"It's tough to know what drives people to do these things" this confused me a lot. Because it's fun, right? Obviously? There's no winnings, there's no clear profit, it's just fun! That's why a lot of people dedicate their lives to something other people might not find useful
Do potatoes wars two please. He only gets more insane
Algebra is useful - imaginary numbers is where I draw the line
But..... I like imaginary numbers :(
But for real the complex numbers are only useful for physics and electrical sciences.
The problem with the investment play is that the potatoes value won't hold up for eight months, its like buying stocks with the plan to sell them in a year, and then two weeks later the company goes bankrupt
See this battle was just a numbers game, you should have watched the other two where it all goes off the rails in psychological warfare
They were an english major they aren't GOOD AT MATH, but they are fine with it. they dont hate it.
The hours before this video went up I just finished watching all three videos, couldn’t watch your reaction video from getting caught up in school
Just got this in my recommended after what we got told in the night for me from the new vid-
A fascinating video, especially with the commentary you were able to give in spite of the curveball subject!
"This man made 8 Potato 11 minions... then he painted the Mona Lisa!"
To be fair to Sun Tzu, he was writing to teach nobles who didn't understand what war really meant and had to make Basic Sense sound like something only True Philosophers could comprehend.
He did like math, it just wasn't enough to win lol. He also taught the Pythagorean theorem mid pvp battle, and some history at times like Qin Shi Huang, Techno was a legend.
6:12 time in skyblock is 52 times faster than real life so 8 months would equivalent to a 35 year investment
i wasnt expecting this reaction but hey...
